Watching the beginnings of a Minior shower, he can't help but to recall the Litleonids and their early showing the previous year. It had preceded the Triad's meddling with the interdream zone, their attempted assassination of avatars...[break][break]

He frowns as he makes another minor adjustment.[break][break]

They do seem awfully close...[break][break]

Pulling out his phone, he sends a message to one hazel albrecht, along with the safehouse address.[break][break]

Minior shower. I think they might impact Slateport itself. Interested in having a look?

He goes inside to unlock the safehouse door.[break][break]

Despite the firmly held rule of no bringing work home, some matters simply cannot be helped. Like the exhibit opening that his husband, Hugo Albrecht , has to work on (though really he’s uncertain if it’s this or something under the table that called him away,) or the abundance of end of term papers that litter Hazel’s desk now.[break][break]

All of them at varying levels of ‘arguably questionable’ in terms of quality. And at this rate, his eyes might begin to cross from the strain of reading so many at once.[break][break]

The text from Cillian Quinn is an unexpected one, but well received all the same. Leaning back in his chair, Hazel lifts hand to rub at his sore eyes before tapping out a response.[break][break]

Absolutely interested. I’ll be there shortly.[break][break]

So wrapped up in his work, he hadn’t even noticed a difference in the evening sky outside. But the concept grabs his interest much more than the work that remains for once.[break][break]

Fortunately, it’s only a short walk to the address listed and he’s off after shooting a quick message to his partner, bundled up and bearing gifts—a bottle that’s held up by the neck once he’s let in, his espeon trotting alongside him. “I’ve brought wine,” he says in lieu of a typical greeting, though he still offers Gavin a polite smile, “when did the shower pick up more traction?” Straight to the point, as ever.

[attr="class","main"]Gavin's brows arch with undisguised appreciation as he registers the bottle of wine held in Hazel's grasp. He's not presumptuous enough to think it's meant for sharing until Hazel calls attention to it, at which point Gavin returns the polite smile with an equally polite, if characteristically distant dip of his head.[break][break]

"Much appreciated." His deep voice, though soft, fills the small safehouse with ease. "I'm afraid I can't say for certain; I was here on other business when I stepped out for a smoke and noticed the sky."[break][break]

There's an ashtray on a small side table near the telescope, where Gavin's abandoned cigarette has burned to its filter.[break][break]

"I thought it might be to your interest." He'd messaged Lulu Flint as well, given her interest in the cosmos, but his sister wasn't anywhere close. Still, he hopes she's able to indulge in the meteor shower with equal fervor. "I hope I didn't interrupt a busy night."[break][break]

Humour, from one married man to another.[break][break]

Sidling around the telescope, Gavin leans against the balcony's rail to give Hazel access to the telescope.

It’s a nice bottle of red, good stock from his personal cellar. “Of course. I couldn’t come empty handed.” It’s a matter of fact statement, and a habit instilled through years of etiquette. It also seems like a nice pairing to their observations, but that’s simply personal preference.[break][break]

At the uncertain answer, Hazel waves a hand before shrugging off his jacket. “No matter – it’s fortunate enough that you’ve caught them before impact. And yes, it certainly is, so I appreciate the invitation.” Though Hazel doesn’t speak much to it, or convey the enthusiasm blatantly, the soft glow of it is still present in they grey of his eyes.[break][break]

“Oh, no. Quite the opposite, unfortunately,” he responds with a short huff of laughter at the inflection of humor in the other’s voice, “Or fortunate, in the case that I needed the excuse to break from grading.” This is much more interesting. And relaxing, in only the way that research can be to more studious sorts.[break][break]

Setting the bottle down on the same side table, he wastes little time in situating himself in front of the offered telescope.[break][break]

While he does so, the espeon at his heels blinks up at Gavin in greeting, offering a perfunctory hello that is no more than a brief whisper of telepathy angled toward their host’s mind. Something that Nicodemus typically only does with those he has encountered previously and finds to be in good standing with Hazel.[break][break]

“Do you think this is the dome’s doing?” Hazel asks after a beat, one eye squinted closed as he follows the colorful descent of several minior through the lens. And how do they make do, if they Pokémon do indeed break through above them?

Well-meaning though it was, the Espeon's greeting sends a shiver down Gavin's spine. Though his partnership with Lugia had necessitated the acclimation to a psychic brush against his mind, it was different when it was anyone other than her.[break][break]

Still, he registers greeting rather than threat, and he forces himself to relax.[break][break]

He gives the Espeon a friendly nod of its own, as if to reassure the creature that it was not at fault for his traumas. On the surface, to one who didn't know what he'd been through at the hands of Calem Pollet, there's no change in him at all.[break][break]

The dome... He registers Hazel's question, though it's a moment before he's gathered himself enough to reply. Blessedly, it can be blamed on a pause for thought. "Perhaps. It's certainly caused all sorts of other fluctuations in the weather."[break][break]

Lugia was most displeased by the phenomenon. She was possessed of a compulsion to quell the storms around her chosen lair in Sootopolis bay, and there have been more and more of those of late. Gavin finds he doesn't mind half as much, for he much preferred the rain to Hoenn's overbearing tropical heat.[break][break]

"I'll get us some glasses."[break][break]

He returns as promised with glasses that are certainly not meant for wine, his expression tinged with amusement.[break][break]

"I suppose it's better than plastic cups. Do you think the Minior will impact soon?" Perhaps they could collect a sample of one of their fallen cores...

Nicodemus is unperturbed by Gavin’s reaction to the simple greeting. An unflappable creature, much like his human companion. The undersized espeon accepts the short nod with a swish of his tail and a twitch of long ears before he moves to wind around Hazel’s ankles in an unspoken demand to be lifted.[break][break]

Hazel himself is oblivious to the interaction, though he often reminds Nico to be mindful of his telepathic greetings. However, he is too focused by what he watches through the lens of the scope, and so also doesn’t immediately acknowledge his pokemon’s incessant request until he cuts through the internal dialogue of Hazel making silent notes with an impatient ‘UP.’[break][break]

With a sigh, he leans away from the telescope and acquiesces– gathering the fickle creature into his arms. “I suppose I just can’t see much other reason for them to suddenly drop into descent.” It’s a clear night, after all. It doesn’t appear that there’s anything disrupting the upper layers of the night sky. Not from this vantage.[break][break]

He nods at the remark, then turns his attention upward to the sky where the minior have begun to appear more rapidly in bright flashes of color. Fingers absently stroke the espeon’s lilac fur as he rumbles approval. The glasses brought back to the balcony do earn a laugh from Hazel, because they are definitely not the proper wine stems, but he’s quick to shake his head. “It goes down all the same.”[break][break]

Posh as he appears (and by all accounts is,) Hazel will drink his wine by any way, shape, or form possible. An odd thing to not be overly picky about, but beneficial in this situation.[break][break]

“I think so. Maybe in the next twenty minutes or so? They’re falling fast.” Pale eyes drift between the sky and the other man. “If we can pinpoint where it seems they’re most likely to land, we might find some in decent shape.”

Hoenn's STAR SOIREE had been another instance of such an occurrence, where the famous Litleonid Meteor Shower had arrived two months ahead of schedule.[break][break]

That, too, was likely connected to 99943's rapid descent toward their region.[break][break]

"I imagine that's evidence enough that these things can affect the weather."[break][break]

Returning shortly with the glasses, Gavin offers to pour the wine as HAZEL KLEIN observes the night sky. Gavin can see the dim flashes of colour even without the telescope, though he's sure the professor has a much clearer picture of what's going on.[break][break]

"I'd very much like to collect a few samples for the M.A.G.M.A Division." He was one of its directors, after all.

“Only from secondhand accounts,” Hazel admitted, fingers still smoothing over the espeon’s ears. “I was away on sabbatical at the time, myself.” Unfortunate timing, truly. From what he’d gathered, it had been a whole time.[break][break]

But the connections made sense. He was no astrophysicist, but it seemed relatively easy to connect those dots.[break][break]

“Agreed. I wonder if it will worsen just before estimated impact.” Very hopeful and positive of him to wager, wasn’t it?[break][break]

Hazel nods in appreciation as Gavin offers to pour, then juggles the espeon in his arms so that he can hold the glass as well. Stepping back so that Gavin can peer through the lens again to confirm, he sips at his wine before speaking. “I thought so. From the looks of it, they look like they might make impact at the park, or near it.”[break][break]

A nightmare for the public parks division to clean up , but at least the two of might be able to take a few off their hands.

Quite literally, in fact, with the mist and the interdream zone. Gavin would've rather heard about it from secondhand accounts. The nightmares that he'd witnessed had brought up many old traumas.[break][break]

His expression pinches with the cynical take; it's exactly what he's been thinking. In Hoenn, everything got worse before it got better.[break][break]

Glass held delicately in one hand, Gavin affirms Hazel's conclusion to the best of his own ability and draws back with a nod. "If we head out in the next few minutes, we should be at the park just as it ends."

“I’ll take your word for it, then,” he responds, a faint smile visible briefly before it is hidden away by a tilted glass.[break][break]

If they are to find the minior and make some collections, he best make quick work of the wine in his cup. Despite the advisement, Hazel is still curious about what exactly happened that night, but he’s glad he didn’t have to endure it. Oddities simply…fascinate him.[break][break]

The expression that takes over Gavin’s expression is all Hazel needs to know that the sentiment is a shared one. The sooner the whole region got through this current hurdle (hopefully) the better.[break][break]

Always darkest before the dawn, and so on.[break][break]

Not one to waste any time (or wine) he drains the remainder of his glass in a way that doesn’t fully speak to the appreciation of the wine’s body or robustness, but it doesn’t really matter in light of the task at hand. Setting the cup down on the side table, Hazel clasps his hands together. “Alright then, shall we?”

Gavin follows suit in draining his glass, the wine's various flavours blending into a singular sweetness that lingers on his tongue. Ordinarily he'd make a point to leave the safehouse as clean as (or cleaner than) he'd found it, but the pressure of time sees him leave the empty glass next to the soiled ashtray and give hazel albrecht a curt nod.[break][break]

It's not a long journey to the park, especially not for two men on a mission. Though most civilians had long since vacated, were there any there at all at this time of night, the gleam of Pokémon's firelight betrays the early presence of Rangers.[break][break]

"We'll have to be careful."[break][break]

Gavin draws a deep breath, and SHADOW MIASMA begins to swirl around him in earnest, creeping across the moonlit park like an eerie morning fog. Though imperfect as a means of concealment, it would at very least shroud their exact identities should someone get too close.[break][break]

Spotting an impacted Minior on the park's edge, he gestures silently to it.[break][break]

"I'll keep watch."

The walk to the park is quick and efficient. Something about the crisp night air makes the time feel as if it’s moving at a rapid pace. Or perhaps it’s Hazel’s own excitement at play, heightening the thrill of the experience.[break][break]

“Of course. Discretion.” Could he be discreet and sneaky, though? They would be finding out shortly.[break][break]

He watches on as Gavin creates a swirling, obscuring fog throughout the space. It’s a curious thing to observe, though Hazel doesn’t remark on it. He’s too appreciative of the extra layer of security, thin as it might be.[break][break]

At the designation, Hazel looked at his companion and points back at himself, brows lifting. “You want me-?”[break][break]

Well, he’s not going to be a disappointment. Looking down at Nico, who was trotting along beside him, he nods at sets off. Any interference would be met by a memory-scrambling from the espeon.[break][break]

Admittedly, Hazel’s not accustomed to…this aspect of work. More often than not, when it comes to his part within Rocket, he’s relegated to consultation and, well, paper pushing. Any other involvement, is usually his seeing to perfunctory technicalities within Hugo’s smuggling route.[break][break]

His constitution is frustratingly too poor for more extraneous tasks and missions. So this is all a bit thrilling, and he darts toward the minior as sneakily as he can. Though he does struggle a bit to dislodge it from the earth it's been embedded in.

Though the underboss tenses somewhat when a duo of Rangers get too close, the beam of a flashlight threatening the edge of the fog, they seem to suddenly lose interest and turn the other way. Gavin's gaze flicks to the Espeon, both grateful for and slightly terrified of its interference.[break][break]

Shame I don't have my Steelix. She was great at loosening the earth, but the shadowed Tyranitar Gavin had on hand was more likely to destroy the park than dislodge a little bit of dirt. So he keeps to his watch, instead, sitting down on a park bench so as to cut a lower profile to any potential onlookers.[break][break]

Well, at least they compliment each other in the fact that his own are far less battle fit.[break][break]

Nicodemus, at least, is well-suited for interference. As are most of his party. Work that involves acquiring intel and removing any trace of his presence— that is what Hazel’s health allows him to excel in. He’s not combat weathered (which is why he’s probably a terrible choice for digging up this minior,) but he’s good at being lowkey, at least.[break][break]

Glancing back over his shoulder, his expression slackens and sours slightly as he spies Gavin casually sitting while he himself toils. Though, really, it’s nothing truly malicious so much as the typical sort of dour look shared among friends when they poke at one another.[break][break]

His arm are definitely not strong enough to dislodge the fallen minior, so it calls for a little extra help. His reuniclus is released, cooing delightedly though Hazel quickly hushes her. “A ROLLOUT should loosen the earth, don’t you think, Gwinevere?”[break][break]

Cooing again, she uproots the earth easily, proving him right and she soon pushes the minior shell up out of the ground for Hazel to take hold of.[break][break]

“Got it!” he whisper yells back, holding the minior aloft with shaky arms.
