[attr="class","skullbody"]It was funny how life worked sometimes. Four years ago, when Isaac had fled from a home that no longer fit him, he would've done anything to have a proper roof over his head. Now he found himself seeking the comfort of the open skies on his own initiative.[break][break]

Maybe it was because the closest thing he had to a home right now was the Rocket sub; utilitarian, below the waves, and a reminder of the direction his life was going in. Maybe it was because he'd spent too damn long cooped up in a hospital, and wanted any excuse he could get to stretch his legs. Or maybe it was because while Isaac was away, Hoenn had been hit by the most inexplicably cold winter it had ever seen on record. Did Isaac like camping? Yes. Did Isaac like freezing his cheeks off? No![break][break]

That was why, in a mix of old habits and making up for lost time, Isaac found himself nestled among the treeline of one of his favorite routes. Back when he started out, his tent was basically a shabby hand-me-down he was able to sneak out from under his father's nose. Comparing that to the robust, good-quality tent he had now was night and day. Even with his continued preference for roughing it, he was thankful for how his fortunes had changed.[break][break]

It was just like the good old days. Or, was it? Typically, Isaac had knack for picking out rather isolated spots. Yet as he scanned the horizon for wild Pokemon, he noticed what seemed to be another tent in the distance. Another camper? At this time of year? This far from an official campsite? Strange. It was such an unlikely circumstance that Isaac couldn't resist the temptation to check it out.[break][break]

Maybe he should've done a better job checking for wild Pokemon before heading out. Maybe then he would've noticed the large, lazy Ursaluna strolling out from the treeline. Seeing that nobody was around to stop it, it began nosing around in Isaac's bags. No manmade container would stop this bear from getting its hands on the goods!

The Teddiursa that woke up them that night had been cute, and had also sent Locke scrambling up the nearest tree and out of sight.

It stared up at him and De-De in blissful confusion for a few moments, before returning to the more interesting items scattered around their camp, while the pair watched with resignation and practiced patience as it casually rifled through their things.

The cub itself was harmless-just a baby really-but it wasn't the cub he was afraid of. So when Locke heard the sound of approaching footsteps from the tree line, he naturally assumed it was the true threat revealing itself.

Instead of the mother, however, it was another, somewhat familiar person.

[break][break]

Locke froze, and not just from the cold. He wanted to shout for the other person not to move closer, but couldn't for fear of revealing himself to the danger that still lurked somewhere unseen.

Instead, he snapped the nearest twig he could reach, and dropped it down at the blonde head below him-waving for him to join him upwards.

[attr="class","skullbody"]It's raining twigs? Hallelujah? Isaac blinked a few times, beating little pieces of stick out of his hair. Had Hoenn's winteriest winter come early? Were the leaves and twigs already on the outs? Was he going to wake up blanketed in freshly-fallen snow?[break][break]

Or maybe it was just that nice courier he'd met before the apocalypse, trying to get his attention.[break][break]

Isaac tilted his head curiously. Stick? Stick, wave? Wave. Up. He was in a tree! Up tree! Yes! But why? Nothing to his left. To his right . . . a Teddiursa? Bear? Baby bear! Isaac shot a look at the cute little cub stomping around the campsite like it owned the place. He then shot a deadpan look towards Locke. It was written all over his face; "Really?"[break][break]

Then he thought about it for a few more moments. If there was a baby bear, papa bear wasn't far behind. And a papa bear trying to get ready to hibernate wasn't something to fuck around with. He looked back towards Locke, frantically nodding in agreement. "Really?" had become "Really!" It was time to get his ass up that tree![break][break]

Wait a minute. That took hand eye coordination. And he only had the hand half of that equation now. He pointed to his eyepatch. He pointed to the tree. He mimed a scrambling, clumsy crime, whereupon he missed a branch. And then he mimed himself falling, making a little "boom" motion with his hands at the end.[break][break]

Okay. Maybe that was a little high concept for a game of charades. He pointed to his eyepatch, pointed to the tree, and shook his head no. There. That would be a bit clearer.[break][break]

Only one problem with that. What's next?

The other man pointed at his eye, but it was hard to see it clearly from this height-especially with all the moving around. So for a few moments all Locke could do was watch him dance below him in utter confusion.

The second time he pointed at his eye, the message finally clicked.

He didn't have an eye.

[break][break]

He frantically looked around for something to help the blonde get up to safety. There was rope in his bag, but it was currently tucked away in his tent. Along with all of his Pokéballs.

This guy was gonna think he just left his Pokémon lying around anywhere at this rate.

[break][break]

Leaving De-De to keep watch at the top, Locke carefully picked their way down the seven or so branches between them, casting nervous glances at the Teddiursa as they steadied themselves on each one. It was painfully slow, but eventually they balanced themselves on a thick branch just a few blonde hairs above the other man.

"Isaac, right?" they whispered, reaching a hand down for him to take.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac couldn't say he expected the courier to spiderman down the tree to offer Isaac a hand. Yet with no other options, and Locke confident enough in this plan's ability to work, who was Isaac to say no? He reached for the courier's hand, missing once, twice, and then finally making solid contact. Fucking depth perception. Fucking darkness. Fucking eyeballs.[break][break]

"More like Zack, these days," Isaac whispered back, stifling a dry chuckle. "Nah. It's Isaac. But, c'mon. You don't know how long I've been stewing on that one." The smile on his face was proud, though perhaps the pain that bubbled beneath it could be picked out.[break][break]

"And you're Locke, yeah? Good to see you again."[break][break]

Any other chit-chat could be saved for the canopy. Isaac still wasn't looking forward to trying to make this climb, but having a guide would make it easier. One hand shakily felt along the length of the tree, looking for handholds that could help him follow in Locke's footsteps. The other remained clinging to theirs for dear life, because if he let go the only place he was going was the cold, hard ground. Between those, and his feet keeping close to the tree bark, maybe everything was going to be okay.[break][break]

Yet the real question remained; could this dynamic duo whip themselves into proper tandem shape before Mama Bear came knocking?

It took a moment for Locke to register the joke, before dramatically rolling their eyes at the other man as he joined them on the branch, taking the time while they were looking up to plot out their path. The two of them certainly weren't going to make it as high as the courier had been before, but they could at least get just of eyesight until this whole mess blew over.

With that goal in mind, they heaved themselves onto the next branch up, testing its weight compared to the last, before reaching down to pull Isaac up again.

Locke froze, fearing the worst, but when the limb held strong he glanced around for a different source for the sound. The answer came from another snapping sound below, followed by the rustling of something moving out of sight within the underbrush.

He flashed Isaac a panicked look, putting a finger to his lips with one hand while trying to help keep his companion steady with the other.

[attr="class","skullbody"]With Locke on survivalist duty, the least Isaac could do was play lookout. He was still perfectly capable of seeing, after all! He just had trouble with distances, and that wouldn't be a problem unless this Teddiursa had hops like Michael Jordan.[break][break]

Right now, it was still just prowling around Locke's campsite in a fashion equal parts adorable and concerning. Isaac had expected a little bit of poking around before disappearing back into the woods. Instead, despite just being a baby, the Teddiursa was frolicking like it owned the place. It was confident. It felt safe. And that could only mean one thing.[break][break]

Snap.[break][break]

Isaac clung to the tree branch for dear life, as if hoping he could hold it up like a Looney Tune instead of falling. He considered bracing himself agsinst Locke, but with his depth perception in its current state, the last thing he wanted to do was accidentally shoulder bump his savior out of the tree.[break][break]

Instead, he waited with bated breath, abiding by Locke's finger of silence. He had so many questions, but he could only trust his right eye to pick up the slack and help them scout out the area. Just what was waiting for them down in the underbrush?

He couldn't bear waiting any longer.

What appeared to Locke to be a massive Ursaring lumbered through the bushes on all fours, dragging what appeared to be the remains of another tent behind it, loaded with goodies. It paused to sniff at the base of the tree, and for a heart pounding moment Locke was certain it would suss the boys out, only a few feet above it.

A small cry came from Locke's campsite, and the strange-looking Ursaring stopped its investigation to meet its cub halfway. The reunion might've been sweet, if the courier wasn't scared out of their mind.

He carried on with his and Isaac's climb while the two bears were distracted with each other, guiding the other man up another two branches to where Locke finally decided was the middle ground between death-avoiding and death-defying.

"G-Guess I wasn't the only one with bad luck tonight…" he mumbled as De-De hopped down to join the pair of boys.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Isaac had expected an Ursaring. He hadn't expected this massive, mud covered hulk, so large that it had to fall onto all fours. He also didn't expect it to have such strength that it could drag an entire campsite around by the heel, the remains of some poor shmuck's tent caught around its ankle like a ball and chain.[break][break]

Wait a minute.[break][break]

He was the poor shmuck![break][break]

"Motherfucker, that's my tent," Isaac whispered, doing everything in his power to avoid shouting those words in a rage. His body tensed up, making it that little bit harder for him to keep climbing. What in the world did he do to deserve this? Besides forgetting to draw an anti bear circle before leaving camp, of course.[break][break]

"Give me one good reason to not jump down there and kick its ass," Isaac whispered, feeling the rage pound through his veins. Then he saw the bear rise on its hind legs for a brief moment to stretch itself out and realized how enormous it was. The hell were they feeding that thing?[break][break]

"I'll take 'because it'll maul me to bits' as an answer. But I'm not gonna like it.

Locke winced in sympathy at Isaac's realization. From the way mama bear was starting to poke at his own tent though, he could understand the urge to confront it.

"Forget 'bits,' I'm pretty sure that thing could eat either one of us whole," he whined. Indeed, the yeti-sized creature was making short work of his remaining rations as they spoke.

"I just knew it was still too early crash around here…Another week from now and they'd have been sleepin' like Snorlax..."

Hang on.

"Hang on." They turned to Isaac. "I know what I'm doin' out in the cold-what're you doin' out here?"

[attr="class","skullbody"]Locke was right and Isaac hated it. "The perils of being fun-sized," he groaned. Even if he did try to fight the bear, what could he even do to it? It was built like a tank, and he was built like a twink.[break][break]

Wait. What did Locke mean by what they said? Isaac figured they were out on a delivery or something like that, but some of their woed choices put that into question. Crashing around? Too early? Isaac quirked an eyebrow, curious. "Getting some shut-eye. At least, until bearzilla came stomping around," Isaac said.[break][break]

"Why? What're you doing here?"[break][break]

Wait. Out in the cold. Too early. Week later, sleeping like Snorlax. The connections between words flowed like water in Isaac's mind. Yes. Yes! He had a plan now![break][break]

"Hold on, maybe it doesn't have to be too late for us. Or too early. Any chance your bird's got some ice type moves? If we can convince the big lug that winter's come a little early . . ." It was a long shot. But so was, potentially, meeting another wanderer of the wilds. Maybe lightning would strike twice today.

He was just as soon saved from awkwardly explaining himself by the other man's galaxy brain idea. De-De seemed taken in by the plan, but Locke was less sure.

"Um, just between you n' me" he whispered, leaning in close so that even De-De couldn't hear. "Delibird are actually pretty weak…"

[break][break]

The courier's attempt to hide his doubts only earned him a solid peck on the head.

"Yowch-it's true!"

[break][break]

The bump did jog their brain a little though.

[break][break]

"Winter coming early though…Wait here."

[break][break]

Making sure Isaac was in a position where he wouldn't fall while left own, Locke scooped De-De into their coat and began ascending the tree on their own, only stopping once they were a decent ways up and out of sight. Poking their head of the leaves they could see their own tent thoroughly massacred in the time it took to get there, but the bears still blissfully distracted by their ill-gotten spoils.

"Alright, let's do it up here."

De-De chirped with affirmation and unleashed a burst of icy energy from her beak, Freeze-Drying the open air and letting the ice fall onto the camp below in small, harmless crystals.

The mama bear lifted her head, sniffing at the snowflakes that had suddenly appeared in the air. For a moment, Locke worried she spot them, but to their relief she instead scooped the Teddiursa up by its scruff and lumbered off into the woods opposite where it came.

Locke waited for a few more moments before releasing the breath they didn't know they were holding. They scaled back down the tree, arms now tired and protesting, and rejoined Isaac on their shared branch.

"I think it worked?" they said uncertainly.

[attr="class","skullbody"]"That's okay. Not everyone's gotta be a powerhouse," Isaac pointed out. "Sometimes, it's all about being that little bit smarter than the average bear. Not that this bear's very average. It's fucking enormous."[break][break]

Luckily, its brain lacked growth proportional to its body. The freeze dried crystals tinkled down to earth, and while not as demonstrative as a Blizzard may have been, the smaller, subtler shower still got the bear's attention. Not wanting to stick around and chance the "snowstorm" getting worse, the bear grabbed its cub and began to stalk off.[break][break]

Isaac watched, nerves catching in his throat. Yet in the end he found relief; Isaac's campsite sloughed off of the bear's ankles as it lumbered away. He let out a massive sigh, because like hell was he going to charge into the woods and fight a bear to get his tent back.[break][break]

"See? What did I just tell you?" Isaac said, shooting Locke a confident grin. "Knew it'd work." Okay, so he didn't. But when getting a lucky break, it was of the utmost importance to act like it was all according to plan. Happenstance was part of all life's biggest successes, so why not lean into it?[break][break]

"Guess if we don't see the big lug in the next few minutes, that's our cue to hop down and start cleaning up. Oh, and, y'know. Probably bounce, before any other Pokemon decide our camps are free real estate."

Locke nodded along quietly, casting nervous glances at the devastation below. The reality of the aftermath was starting to sink in, and the courier wanted nothing more than to immediately leap down and inspect the remains of their campsite.

Isaac was right, however, so they waited-counting seconds as the wind blew snack wrappers and scraps of their shabby, discount-store tent into the underbrush. Even when enough time had passed that the two men could be reasonably sure they were alone, they restrained themselves enough to help their companion down before rushing to see what could be salvaged.

But the damage was well and truly done.

"Ya know, I don't think we'll have to worry about other Pokémon settlin' in anytime soon," he griped, carelessly tossing the snapped halves of his tent pole into a bush. "Pretty sure this is a little more than a 'fixer-upper.'"

He'd meant it as a joke, but he couldn't keep the emotion from trickling into his voice. It wasn't the first time he'd lost his only means of shelter, but with winter settling in and how little he made while the barrier had been up and he was just so sick of being kicked while he was down-

He rubbed a frayed sleeve against his eyes, trying to hide his sniffles from the stranger nearby.
