[attr="class","annalpostbody"]annalise loves the snow. she didn't really get to experience cold weather growing up, so the anomalous storms that have been cropping up in recent winters fill her with childlike wonder. [break][break]
a lot of hoenn's native species, on the other hand, don't share her love for winter wonderland-esque scenery. now that she's head ranger, she's privy to countless incoming reports of agitated or aggressive pokemon. she's no statistician, but the cases are coming in more frequently now that hoenn has had its first snow.

idling outside slateport hq in a ranger-branded vehicle, annalise enjoys the warmth blasting from the heater as she waits for Genevieve Cromwell to come out. she sends out a quick here! message through her xtransceiver before going back to scrolling through social media.

Today was the day.

How easy it was to be so starry-eyed today. It was like meeting a celebrity, only this time a hero. Annalise Henderson, one of the best of the region. A Ranger, on a mission with her! Genevieve was on edge almost all day. She did her make-up to present herself, she made sure her hair was done, her nails, her eyelashes, her lips, her eyes, every folicle of hair. To say she had looked herself over the mirror to a near neurotic degree was an understatement.

She's looks at her phone, her heart beating through her chest. She was nervous. But, with Serenity on her shoulder, her Eevee mewing out happily, it only calmed her nerves.

Then she exits the Slateport HQ, her outfit at the ready for winter. She straightens her posture, she places one hand over her head, and speaks. "Cadet Cromwell, ready for action! It... It's a pleasure to be working with you, Miss Henderson!" She's so nervous. But can anyone blame Genny? Annalise was an inspiration not only to women Rangers, but to make it so high two years younger than her! Genny was starstruck!

she rolls her window down as the cadet gets within earshot, an amused smile on her face at how formal she sounded. it reminds her fondly of her early days as a cadet.

It's absolutely starstruck, as Genny is told she can call her Annalise. She didn't mind being casual, and the redhead was bouncing on her heels. How in the heck could she not be?!

"Yes Miss- I mean, yes Annalise! Thank you!" She hops right in, hazel eyes showing pride now. Now she can talk casually to her hero, and the way she talks is cute too! Perhaps Genny should try adopting that? Hm... would @elio like it? She wonders. She shakes her head quickly.

"Where are we going today, Annalise?"

Her Eevee hopping onto her lap, and laying down, a quick nap. Genny is tickled, heat on her cheeks, as she still can't believe this day is happening!

Genevieve Cromwell reminds her so much of herself as a new cadet — energetic, nervous, eager to work. some days, when work is especially rough, she feels nostalgic for that time in her life. no paperwork, no one underneath her, no starry-eyed cadets that look at her as a role model.

seeing how excited genny is makes being head ranger well-worth all the hard parts, though.

the passenger door opens and her mission partner joins her in the car, her eevee tucking in for a nap in her lap. how cute! annalise shifts out of park and the car begins to move.

"weeell, first we're gonna make a pit stop on 110 to pick up some grass-types, then deliver them to lavaridge."

absentmindedly, she reaches for the cable resting in one of the cupholders and holds it up for her passenger. "here's the aux if you want it!"

you can learn a lot about another person by what they play in the car. [break][break]
after some time driving, she steals a glance at genny before looking ahead again. "so! how are you liking all this ranger stuff?"

So many stories about meeting people's heroes were just letdowns, but Annalise? Not even remotely. She was so sweet, and so personable too! Every bit the kind of woman she aimed to be in the Rangers.

Her tiny four foot eleven frame sits in the seat, the Eevee enjoying the snooze below, as Genny listens intently to their mission. With a finger on her bottom lip, she thinks a moment. So they were doing a delivery mission? That sounded simple enough. To Lavaridge though? She chimes in. "Oh, is it because of the snow?" It made sense. Lavaridge was by a volcano. It reminded her of the documentary she saw with the Mankey over in a foreign region, sitting in hot springs in the heavy winter.

The aux cable is in Genny's hands, and she nods, pulling her phone, and attaching it in. She immediately sets to play her driving mix, a smile on her lips when the question comes up.

"Oh, it's wonderful! Helped out in Lilycove in the aftermath of the meteor, and helped a lot of people in the local clinic in Slateport too. I wish I was in Littleroot with my team during the attack, but I'd have slowed them down or worse. But that's okay, sometimes being support has its own rewards! I actually feel like I'm helping people, like my parents did!" She felt so bubbly and full of sunshine at the thought. Yeah, some of it wasn't so fun, but overall she loved meeting people, helping them, and doing everything in her power to make their lives easier!

She pets Serenity, turning her head with a big smile. "Met a guy during it too at the clinic-" She is twirling orange hair in her fingers, as she tries not to focus on it too much. "-so I guess it's like, really working out so far." She tried to be casual like Annalise. She respected her so much, she had to try.

"What about you? How is being the top Ranger in Hoenn? A dream come true?" Starry-eyes. Yup, she was in the Rangers for a long haul.

"yep!" annalise chirps. "hoenn's not supposed to get cold in the winter, so the wild pokemon who live here have been super struggling with these weird winters we've been having the past couple of years."

balanced on her thigh, her phone interrupts the flow of conversation with gps directions. she takes the next left onto another street, then breaks her consuming focus on the road to say: "that's why the rangers do these little pokemon deliveries every year!"[break][break]
Genevieve Cromwell puts her music on, letting it fill the gaps between her words as she gushes about ranger work. it makes annalise feel warm inside to hear her enthusiasm, to hear her optimism even as she talks about littleroot.
[break][break]
it reminds her of herself, clinging to those bright spots wherever she finds them.
[break][break]
"you are helping people," she agrees. slateport thins out around them as they get closer to the outskirts and further from the concrete sprawl. "not everyone needs to be fighting out there on the front lines — we need good people like you to help pick us back up when everything's said and done!"
[break][break]
"so, on behalf of me and head ranger lars and hoenn itself," she flashes genny a smile. "i'm really thankful for all the work you did at those clinics."
[break][break]
like the sun moving out from behind a veil of clouds, the conversation takes a bright turn. [break][break]"a guy?" annalise echoes, a lilt in her voice. the head ranger mask comes off, revealing the young girl beneath. "you met a guuuy? is he cute? is he nice? has he fallen head over heels yet? oh my gosh, meeting at a clinic sounds like such a movie moment!"[break][break]
the truck rolls out onto an uneven gravel path as they enter the route north of the city. she spends a moment contemplating the answer to genny's question.
[break][break]
"it is," she admits, voice soft. "like, it's a ton of paperwork and meetings, but it's been so rewarding so far. i love working with cadets and helping them discover their passions and, like, helping the league make hoenn a better place."

With the explanation of the mission, as well as her thanks on behalf of Hoenn and the Rangers, it only made more sense why. This was why Genny was a Ranger. To help people! To do everything she could to assist every last person on this planet. Her role model saying it, she believes it. This is why sometimes, meeting your heroes works out.

Petting Serenity just a bit more on her lap, it's Annalise's prying words that have Genny's cheeks heat up, because her mind goes to @elio .

"Oh, so cute. He's... nothing like Alolan guys. He's cute, a huge dork, could grind meat on his chest-" Aaaaand she's revealing too much, but she's still talking, she can't stop herself. Her cheeks continue to heat up. "-I hope he falls for me. Our date is in a couple days, and I'm really into him." It's so simple. She realizes how that sounds, and quickly throws her hands to her face to hide her embarrassment.

Thankfully, when they hit the route, now north of their city, Genevieve would hear how being a head ranger is, and how worth it this profession was, and Genevieve was only vibrating. "That's, like, amazing! I'll be sure to meet every expectation you have!" Annalise is infectious! It's like she knows, and it only fuels Genevieve more and more! This was her calling in life.

Then came the oppressing need to impress. But to Genny? That was a challenge, not oppression. She'd take every box, and check it, make every motion to succeed. She would!

"So! Where is it? I'm already itching to go!"

Genevieve Cromwell 's description of her crush elicits a huff of laughter out of annalise. it rises in her throat before she can choke it back down, one hand lifting off the steering wheel to muffle the sound. she's never heard anyone say it like that before, but, in a way, it gives her mental image of this guy more clarity. [break][break] cute, dorky, fit.[break][break]
she gives an approving nod, unaware of how red the cadet has turned. "i don't think you have anything to worry about, genevieve! you're pretty, you're smart, you're super selfless — only an idiot would pass you up."

a smile, gentler. "your date is gonna be amazing. trust me."
[break][break]
genevieve's enthusiasm draws out another giggle. "i'm sure you will! i'm super happy to have someone like you to work with."
[break][break] the cadet's anticipation is brought to an end as the car rumbles to a stop in front of a snow-covered ranger outpost. as annalise puts it in park, she turns to look at her, smiling brightly. [break][break] "we're here! let's load 'em up!" [break][break]
in one fluid motion, annalise opens the door and slips out into the shock of cold outside. the cadet assigned to this place pokes their head out of the building's entryway, a wilty oddish in hand. the head ranger heads up the slick steps, takes the grass-type, and bounds back to deposit it in the car's back seat. then back up to the outpost.
