Greyson Connors has helped her make great strides in her training progress, but it still isn't enough. she still isn't enough, she thinks, fingers unconsciously reaching up to touch the ugly scar hidden beneath her turtleneck. seeing her friends injuries after the battle at mt. pyre had renewed her desire to cast off the helplessness that she's been dragging around with her. "thanks for agreeing to this," annalise says, feeling a little bashful and starry-eyed now that she's face-to-face with one of her idols. she tries to look unaffected — she's a head ranger, now, after all — but her mind buzzes with excitement. "Of course!" She replied with a small smile and a clap of her hands. [break][break]

Her chambers were prepared for a battle, the reflective waterfalls covering the sounds of their footsteps just barely as Primarina slid forward onto the battle court. "Not many people actually ask me to spar with them for training. I don't know if it's cause they're scared or something but. I like to help where I can!" she says trying to get the new head ranger to like her.[break][break]

"First thing's first though. What do you wanna work on? Usually helps to have a goal in mind before you start just sparring and throwin hands." she tells annalise. "What do you think one of your weaknesses are?"

Melody Miro 's chamber is so pretty. annalise drinks in her surroundings as they walk, footfalls muffled by the continuous rumble of the waterfalls around them. is every elite four chamber like this, she wonders, or is each one different?[break][break]
"oh really?" [break][break]
in a way, she gets it. sparring with an elite four member is intimidating, even for someone outside the competitive scene like herself. plus, getting stomped by someone way more experienced than you can't be pretty, but she finds that it's a necessary humiliation at this point. better to be beaten by melody now than to be killed by a rocket later.

"yeeeah," she says with a casual shrug. "they're probably just intimidated!"
[break][break]

her kneejerk reaction to melody's question is to say "everything". she feels weakness in everything. but the word stays behind her teeth, buried beneath a thoughtful hum.

"mm, well, my battling style is pretty defensive, i think. it's good for ranger work, but i have a hard time against actual, like, opponents. "
[break][break]
the cut beneath her collarbone aches at the thought, as freshly as it did on mt. pyre.

"so i guess i'd say one of my weaknesses is, like ... too much defense and not enough offense."
[break][break]
being too soft is the underlying notion, but she settles for something more fixable than a personality flaw.[break][break]

Ahhhh. So that's what she thought her weakness was. "Ok ok I see.." she replies before she seemingly dove deep into thought. "But I mean...an amazing defense isnt so bad." she answers "Steel types are an amazing example of that, tons of natural resistances and the like!" she says [break][break]

"Maybe you just need to find a pokemon who can turn that amazing defense into offense? Some specific ones come to mind, Aegislash for example." she says "It can swap to defensive and offensive stances. I'm all for that being a valid strategy. Hold out against your opponent's offense and tire themselves out and then strike while they're tired!" she says offering her opinion freely to Annalise as Melody approaches a section of the wall near her door. She presses in and a title flips over with some pokeballs available as she sifts through them before she eventually settles on sending out her MEOWSCARDA.[break][break]

Her Primarina also slides into the room from the door and meowscarda instantly bows on one knee to the primadonna. "Aye meowscarda eyes up! We're helping annalise here!" she comments as melody turns over to annalise. "Who do you like battling with?"

"not gonna lie," she says with a giggle. "you're really selling me on getting an aegislash!"

maybe that's what she needs — a pokemon that can flow from steely defense to swift offense.

"i'll have to look into getting one!"

annalise watches melody rummage through her collection of poke balls, marveling at how they're being kept behind some hidden tile in the wall. the pokemon she settles on makes annalise's eyes widen in wonder.

"sooo cute," she coos, distracted from their objective by the meowscarada and the primarina that slides into the room. "is that pokemon from paldea?"

annalise finds her focus again when melody turns towards her, blinking thoughtfully at the question.

"ummm, well, i'm most comfortable battling with my altaria but i'm flexible if you want me to try using something else! like, um, something more defensive?"

her hand moves towards the pokeballs clipped to her belt, fingers hovering over one in particular.

Melody eyes light up when she hears about Alteria "No! It's perfect! she smiles as melody claps her hands together "It can learn cotton guard to buff it's defense and with a mega evolution u can pivot away from that stark ice weakness! Plus it's cute." she says nodding her head. [break][break]

Her meowscarada rushes up to annalise and gets on one knee and grabbing anna's hand and kisses it. "GET OFF OF HER!!" she shouts at the damn cat. fuckin attention whore. [break][break]

The cat Pokémon comes back to her side of the field and melody frowns "It's a meowscarada! They're from Paldea and as you can tell they love the spotlight and charming people."

she thinks back to a time when she faced a rampaging snorlax with Guillermo Marceliño . without her altaria's cotton guard, their rough landing would have been a hundred times worse. her cadet days seem so easy and far away now that she's viewing them through a lens of much more harrowing experiences.

annalise giggles, charmed, as meowscarada presses a kiss to the back of her hand. what a little gentleman, she thinks, getting only a heartbeat of entertainment before melody shouts him back to her side.

"oh yeah, i totally see that," she says, voice thick with laughter. meowscarada. the name stirs the vaguest sense of familiarity. she must've heard it during school or more recently during ranger meetings about invasive species of paldean pokemon. "a charming pokemon like him really suits you."
[break][break]annalise would love to talk more about paldean pokemon, but that would have to be set aside for later. she wants to utilize melody's time with her as efficiently as possible. [break][break]
a light toss of her poke ball reveals her altaria in a flash of light. she materializes on the floor, unfurling her wings out with a stretch before settling them at her sides again. the dragon-type observes the room, acknowledging melody and her meowscarada with a tiny peep!
