Rocket headquarters had been Zev's first stop after the attack on Littleroot, then he'd visited Isaac Merlo in the clinic before returning to Slateport to crash for the night. But barely twenty-four hours later, Zev was back in the submarine, handing in his report of what had transpired.[break][break]

He was a Rocket Beast now. His presence within the crime syndicate actually meant something, and his recollection of the events that had transpired were important — as crucial as the primal crystal shard he had brought back with him.[break][break]

Zev wasn't the only one at the submarine handing in reports, either. Shouting from down the hall suggested bryan delarosa was submitting his own report, one filled with plenty more expletives than Zev's. The hitman, however, could not bring himself to care. Once he finished with his task, he passed by the closed door without pausing to eavesdrop.[break][break]

Little did he know the conversation would soon find him.[break][break]

Zev made his way from the North Wing to the East Wing, walking familiar corridors until he arrived at the submarine's gym. Situated alongside training halls and battling arenas, the gym's treadmills and free weights almost seemed out of place. Thankfully, it was completely empty.[break][break]

Zev almost breathed a sigh of relief. Between the Littleroot operation, carefully gaslighting his own protégé, and the expectation of greater involvement in Rocket's activities, he could use a little time to himself. He changed into athletic clothes and sneakers, warmed up, then squared off against one of the boxing dummies with knuckles bare.

Several expletives were certainly dropped, enough to make even skyler dross herself blush. [break][break]

HOW was it possible the league knew what their plans were before? How could suddenly several identities in rocket's higher ups be exposed? Why the FUCK did things pan out like this? The door slams open, the submarine feeling the wrath of his rather nasty temper. [break][break]

He stormed down the hall, pissed off at the world that they had failed to take over little root. Eris Halla's stupid little comments ringing in his head tormenting him with each second that passed. [break][break]

He needed to get it out of his system, he walked over to the gym, completely blinded by his anger to not notice Zev Harcourt's appearance. He silently picks up a sand bag with one arm and hooks it up to the roof as it swayed, as if anticipating it's fate and trying to avoid it's destiny. "FUCK" he shouts as he slams his fist into it at full force, ripping the fabric of the bag tethering it to the roof and sending it flying across the room. He growls in frustration, staring at the bag.

Unlike the other Beast, Zev immediately registered Bryan's presence in the gym. It was hard not to, considering how loudly he stomped about. Zev watched as Bryan hung up a sandbag only to blow it clean off its hook with a single punch.[break][break]

"Impressive," Zev remarked loudly so that the other man could hear him even through the rage. He wasn't lying or making fun of Bryan; the feat of strength really was impressive.[break][break]

Zev tilted his head, eyebrow raised. "Was that you I heard up at the high offices a few minutes ago?" he asked, though he already knew the answer.

The comments cuts through the static filling his head right now. It was Zev Harcourt, complimenting his strength. [break][break]

He sighs, taking a second to pull his cigarette pack out of his pocket and lighting it before pulling in a big gulp of nictoine. "Thanks. Wasn't fucking enough to take littleroot though." he angrily retorts. [break][break]

The fellow newly appointed beast asks if that was bryan yelling in the room. "Yeah that was me. Those idiots allocated resources terribly, they lost track of CIAN MAHER, my plan was a fucking disaster thanks to them." he growls as he picks up the sand bang, not really sure where to place it since the fabric holding it tore off.

Zev's eyes flickered to the cigarette as Bryan lit it, sending smoke to the ceiling. Was that safe to do in the submarine? But he did not care enough to say anything about it, and instead turned back to the boxing dummy he'd been smacking around.[break][break]

"We were way more outnumbered than I expected," Zev agreed as he punctuated their conversation with the thud of his fists against vinyl. "So it was a rat, huh?"[break][break]

CIAN MAHER. Zev didn't know him, though his surname was familiar. Was there a connection to boruta maher, Zev's occasional sparring partner at their MMA gym?[break][break]

"What's the plan, then? To hunt down Cian?" Rocket did not take kindly to defectors.

Zev made a noise that was halfway between a chuckle and a scoff. "The enforcers can keep the grunts in line. I have my own work to do."[break][break]

By that point, he had gone through his boxing movements and worked up a sweat. Panting, he stepped away from the dummy for a swig from his water bottle.[break][break]

"Merlino says there are more agents missing in action than just Cian. Some disappeared before our operations, some during, some after." Zev wiped the sweat from his brow with a towel. "oscar clayton and I are going to hunt some down, but we'll leave Cian to you."[break][break]

Then Zev gestured at the boxing dummy.[break][break]

"You want a go?" he asked Bryan, recognizing the pent-up frustrations within the other man. Bryan looked like he needed an outlet or his head would explode.

He looks at the training dummy. He pauses for a moment before pulling his cigarette out of his mouth. "Only if you're done with it. I imagine after im done it wont be in one piece." he answers [break][break]

"I'll need to talk to Raphael Pryde and Lulu Flint about making one that can handle my strength." [break][break]

He takes a big pull of. letting it burn out completely. He flicks it into the garbage as a loud 'tink' resounded against the can. "Anyone else I should know about. Any important names for traitors?" he asks tapping his foot against the floor. "This whole fuckin operation was a cluster fuck of CRAP cause of this. Cian's little leak, higher ups not properly allocating resources." he growls to Zev Harcourt. [break][break]

"We could have made a huge leap in progress taking that place."

"Yeah, go ahead," Zev said of the boxing dummy. He had other exercises he could do afterward, anyway. Trusting that Bryan would absolutely obliterate the dummy, Zev took several steps away, hoping to avoid any flying debris.[break][break]

At the question about other names, the hitman shook his head.[break][break]

"No names yet. The admins have to do some preliminary investigations. They think there are a lot of grunts who simply hid instead of showing up to the operations. Those will likely be punished but kept in the ranks."[break][break]

Fear was something Zev struggled to grasp. He understood self-preservation quite intimately, considering his chosen profession. But to be afraid for one's life was something he'd only ever felt once, and the more that time passed since then, the more the memory had taken on a hazy, dreamlike quality.[break][break]

Bryan's venting brought Zev out of his brooding. "Littleroot may have failed, but there will be other opportunities. Hopefully they won't be such a clusterfuck."[break][break]

His thoughts turned to the meeting with declan walsh back in September. The idea to take Mossdeep had been discussed at considerable length; moreover the Rocket Boss had not immediately shut it down.

As soon as Zev Harcourt gave the all clear, Bryan swung on the training dummy. [break][break]

The one swing was all it took to make the wood splinter. It splintered off into several pieces as Bryan punched it directly at the torso. He shakes his hand as he felt that one rather closely as Zev spoke at length in response to his tangent. [break][break]

"It didn't have to be one is why I'm angry. That clusterfuck wouldn't have happened if we did it properly. Not a half assed attempt at three different areas. One full assault could have worked." he answers "But I'm just a dumb beast, so what do I know?" [break][break]

He taps his foot, he wonders when the next chance to take littleroot would be. It was a big open area they could have used for many things.

Zev flinched away from the shattering wood, raising his arms to shield his eyes from any flying splinters. They clattered all over the floor. He stared, eyebrows raised with some incredulity, at what remained of the training dummy. "Arceus, you weren't kidding," he muttered.[break][break]

While Bryan continued his rant, Zev retrieved a broom and dustpan that leaned against the wall. He listened to the other Beast vent his rage while he started sweeping up the debris.[break][break]

"It sounded to me like you had pitched the Littleroot plan before the summit meeting," Zev commented, "but the Boss saw it as an opportunity to distract League forces since his goal was mining the meteoroid."[break][break]

The hitman paused his sweeping, contemplative.[break][break]

"Your desires for the organization were ignored and your plans manipulated out of your control," he concluded quietly. "And we don't even know what those strange crystals from the meteoroid are, or how they will benefit us. Not yet, anyway."[break][break]

Though he avoided criticizing the Rocket Boss or other administration, Zev still walked a fine line by speaking his observations out loud. But those were the facts.

He raises an eyebrow. [break][break]

"Don't clean it up." he answers before he releases a mr mime and looks over to the pile of broken wood. [break][break]

The Mr. mime shouts his name at him ecstatically before rushing over to remove the tools from the fellow beast's hands and began to work on the mess himself. "Yes. I had, this had been planned for quite some time before the meeting." He taps his foot against the floor. [break][break]

"You know who probably does understand entirely what those crystals are? Hell, he seems to always know everything before we discover it." he asks before realizing how much sense Zev was making. Littleroot was never declan walsh 's goal was it? It sounded plausible that this was just a nice excuse to keep Bryan in line and under Walsh's thumb.[break][break]

"I wouldn't even be surprised if the higher ups who didn't like the littleroot plan sabotaged us by allocating resources to their fights that were more successful."

"But how could Walsh already know what's hidden inside a space rock hurtling several miles per second at us?" the hitman wondered aloud. "We've accessed Mossdeep Space Center a few times ourselves to steal their data. If that's his source, we should already know what he knows."[break][break]

Zev also had his suspicions that declan walsh knew much more than anyone else in the organization — perhaps even his own underbosses, as evidenced by Cillian Quinn's expressed disagreement until Walsh had assuaged concerns.[break][break]

Bryan seemed intent on the notion of sabotage, but Zev had been an officer in Kanto's army. Soldiers on the frontlines often only saw the narrowest view in front of them and believed that was the end-all, be-all; in a similar way, Bryan fixated on conquering Littleroot in a single-minded manner. On the other hand, officers had to examine the bigger picture and prioritize the greater advantages while sacrificing the smaller ones.[break][break]

The question was whether the advantages Walsh desired were going to benefit Team Rocket more than farmland and homes for the syndicate's members. At least with the dome gone, they wouldn't need to worry so much about hoarding and rationing resources.[break][break]

All Zev said to Bryan, however, was, "Walsh made it clear that the attack on Littleroot the other day was only meant to be a distraction. He may still approve of a more permanent conquest in the future."

He didn't think it was becoming of Zev to clean the floor, he was a beast now, he needed to act like one in his mind. [break][break]

On top of that it was Bryan's mess to clean up, not his. [break][break]

he grumbles while Zev points out what he didn't want to admit, littleroot was the side goal. Not the main objective, he knew that but he still wanted victory none the less. [break][break]

"Maybe he'd know if it happened elsewhere? Else when? I don't know. I'm just angry and rambling, nothing im saying is gonna make sense." he admits as he crosses his arms, he knew how he got when he was mad. He knew nothing Zev Harcourt would or could say would placate him. Only time would, and fortunately for Bryan. He had plenty of it.[break][break]

"It just seems weird he was so interested in the crystals and excited to secure them for himself before he even knew what they were. What if it was another necrozma, what if it emitted radiation?" he asks, plenty of things killed people just by being in their presence.

Zev sensed there was no more attempting to talk logic with the other Beast. Bryan would stew over the decisions surrounding the Littleroot operation for days to come; the wound was still fresh now, not even twenty-four hours after its execution.[break][break]

"Let's not forget the energy source, too," Zev added. "We don't know what it will do yet, or even how to extract it."[break][break]

The vivid memory of the soulless, pipework-like Pokémon and the clockwork city they inhabited resurfaced in his mind. While Zev himself did not care for the energy source, he had a hunch he'd be involved in any future projects related to it.[break][break]

"I've handed over the crystal to Cillian Quinn, so I'm sure our scientists will be examining it soon and planning trips to that city. Radiation, other hostile Pokémon — we'll have to be prepared for anything."
