Unown have power beyond comprehension. To Mars, that is no understatement. He had been chosen by them, or so many claim, but no matter how deep his own connection with the Symbol Pokémon may be, it’s not like he has every answer. They can move through dimensions, they can create barriers between them, they have knowledge of what’s to come, and are the coding behind entire realities. Even beyond that, when accompanying the DRK TRIAD, they can avatars and their patrons in one blow, bind the will of legendary pokémon, and do so much more…

And yet, despite the fact that he has witnessed all of these things Unown can do, right here and now, as he stared at the Unown-D that had wielded so much power until recently, it does no more than stare back at him.

This really would be much easier if Unown could speak, but alas, they seem determined in communicating solely through terminology that is somehow both complex and vague all at once.

”I understand why you’d join me, but why aren’t you using your power?” Mars muses out loud. He stands at one of the quieter spots of Mount Pyre’s forest, far from the rift that has become as if a tourist attraction despite the League’s warnings (typical Hoenn). Of course not.

It’s silly. Back at the peak of the mountain, back when it was a battlefield, this Unown had betrayed Father Winter and chosen to come with him. Mars can feel it: the connection that now exists between, and yet, he can’t help but wonder… Why had it agreed to come with him? For what purpose? Had it been against the DRK Triad all along? Had it been forced to serve them? Was it only capable of all the things Mars has seen it do because of the Triad?

The Unown could give him all the answers he seeks, but instead, it stays as silent as can be.

With a sigh, the banker materialises a golden coin almost without a thought, rolling it across his knuckles. To the left. Then to the right.

In the distance, a Claydol watches them, but even though Mars is well aware of its presence, he chooses to pay it no mind at all. It’s of no consequence.

Mars’ pokémon are trained for discipline: to be fierce and fearless tools that answer to his every command without hesitation. The Unown, however, are the exception, because the reality of the matter is that the Unown aren’t really his pokémon at all.

He may put them in pokéballs, they may teleport to his side when he calls them, and they may aid him when he asks it of them, but in the end, they follow their own will: these are choices they make.

Just like this Unown-D had chosen to betray Father Winter to come to his side.

Mars still wonders exactly why, but undeniably so, it is a point of pride.

In the end, the Unown only acts when Mars makes the wise (not) decision to lean against a rock. Since, as it turns out, it’s actually no rock at all, and with some rumbling and some turning, a Runerigus appears, revealing the painted pattern that characterises it.

HIDDEN POWER strikes before the pokémon can try anything, and Mars too teleports out of harm’s way.

As it turns out, the Unown-D may be unwilling or incapable to use the power it once had, but as it turns out, a super effective attack at just the right time can still do much.

Brushing non-existent dust off his clothes, Mars chucks a Luxury Ball at the haunted stones.
