his dismissal shows little pain, or much less attention, to the subject of his eye. what little offense he takes to his injury is reserved for others. a handful of scapegoats that leave every other mention or inquiry a little more than an awkward side topic.

“you think so?” he pauses for a moment, temporarily off beat as he forgets to follow her step. “i had someone else pick it out. they said this would be modest and humble.”

his hand shifts slightly, lower, as it adjusts to the crane of where shoulder blades meet spine. it’s a mild slip but one that telegraphs his intent. one further step back and he intends to give her a slight twirl, relying on her own aptitude to carry out a smooth transition.

“you should know, flattery doesn’t get you anywhere with me.”

and he’d seen right through her—but it had been no sly trick; merely, a correction of bad form as his date. a date that was here, presumably, all for appearances. given such nature of the occasion, his stroke of realness came as a surprise.[break][break]

she twirled easily, returning to stare more directly up at his mask. there was a glimmer of pride in her eyes rarely so visible during working hours. it was pride that originated in power beyond the desk outside his office, and beyond the borders of a region that rarely recognized her.[break][break]

a pride unwilling to break to such candidness from someone whose approval she ultimately did not require.[break][break]
