War was hell. Always was. Ashley knew the repercussions would serve hurt him years from now, waking up in a cold sweat. He knows this, because he already had that problem when it came to Kanto Rocket. They kept him up at night, staring at a blank ceiling, a ceiling fan that looked back at him in constant motion. He'd recall staring into it as it spun, when eventually his eyes would mistake it for going backwards. How many times that must have happened.

It got darker, but that part of him was gone now.

Jayden wouldn't shut up. And the worst part is, he found himself not frowning at him. Hell, at the fact that Jayden said he was glad Ash was back, he wanted to bark back, to bite at Jayden with that cold, ruthless hatred in his stomach. To fire back with every bit the bile he wanted to. But he found that pool of hatred having emptied. No, something else had taken its place. Regret. In one way, it was Ashley's fault. Not in a bullshit way either. He stabbed Jayden, and in turn, he lost Sushi. It was that simple.

His expression is mournful. "Yeah." He finds himself wanting to snatch another cookie. Anything to get away from the hospital food. "I'm back." Whatever he meant by that, whatever Jayden meant, regardless... all of them were true.

"Look. Jay. I'm not ready to be friends again. Not yet." He finally just says it. Finally. "I'm okay with talking to you. I'm okay being near you. But that's about it." He lets that sit in the air.

[attr="class","skullbody"]In the midst of his feigned sleep, Isaac kept an ear on the cold war between Ashley and Jayden. He was fond of both of them, to the point where he almost couldn't believe that the caring, thoughtful Jayden he knew was the same one that did such unforgiveable acts to Ashley. If things resolved, he'd yawn, stretch out, and wake back up. If things escalated . . . well, he'd cross that bridge when he came to it. But for the time being, he did his best to "slumber" through this discomforting tension.[break][break]

Finally, resolution seemed on the horizon. Ashley didn't mind being around Jayden, but he wasn't ready to accept him back into his life as a friend yet. Frankly, it was understandable! Ashley would've likely shown Isaac the same respect if Isaac aired those feelings after literally having his eye removed.[break][break]

It was a personal discussion. It wouldn't be right to just wake up and interrupt it. Even eavesdropping like this felt a little wrong, but it was too late for that. Maybe it wouldn't be a problem if he feigned sleep for just a little longer . . .[break][break]

A shame those cookies smelled so good. And Ashley and Jayden were super focused on each other at the moment. Maybe it wouldn't be an issue if he just . . . rolled over . . . and borrowed a cookie while they weren't looking . . .

whatever he meant, it seemed as though Ashley Shepard had understood.

[break][break] it was as if, even in despite of all the betrayals and bloodshed, years of friendship could not be erased between them.

[break][break] (as if, despite not letting anyone besides Cillian Quinn call him by that nickname, he would still let ashley.)

[break][break] however, when the other spoke up again, he couldn't help the way his brows raised. confusion lit his violet gaze, unsure as to what the other could possibly mean. now that ashley was in rocket again, all was fine. all could be forgiven.

[break][break] jayden wouldn't have to kill him.

[break][break] yet, before he could open his mouth and ask more, there was a shift of moment. his gaze snaps to one Isaac Merlo... or rather a hand that was sneaking from outside of a blanket.

[break][break] he pauses, thinking, before deciding to finalize the conversation with a quick nod.

[break][break] "well then," he says, stepping back. "it's about time i leave. would you give issac my regards once he awakens?"

Huh.

Just like that.

Ashley turns his gaze downwards once Jayden is out the door. Silver eyes straight ahead. They are burning a hole in the wall ahead of him. He leans backwards into the bed. Looking at his arm. He looks towards Isaac, who had been sneaking to get a cookie; like a mouse that was caught in a trap.

A scowl marks its way on his mouth, branding him. He wasn't the bad guy here. He shouldn't feel guilty. A Pokemon died. Jayden got to live with a scar. Ashley got to live with scars beyond scars. But through the self-justification and all of the irritation he felt, none more could he feel than himself. To say he isn't at fault is a misunderstanding. They are both products of the well-oiled Rocket machine. They are victims.

... no. That's not quite it.

Ashley scowls down at himself. Self-centered. Through his own fingers clawing at the terrible blankets here at this Arceus-forsaken hospital, it's only made worse when the epiphany of how Jayden feels enters his mind. Stabbed by his best friend, Ashley knows he is a reason Jayden became this. He could have been there, stopped him, or tried something. Anything.

With another cookie swiped from the plate, Ash takes a bite in. Though it is sweet, that bitterness makes every bite burn just a little more. "..." Not a peep more from Ashley.
