Where there had once been a nice and sizable pond there is now nothing but frost; water having been perpetually frozen by Kyurem’s merciless cold. A smooth and unmovable layer of ice that lies surrounded by snow, making for the perfect setting for ice hockey, figure skating, and all activities of the sort.

That is, of course, if one is willing to ignore the dead pokémon encased in ice that are as if gruesome statues in this Silent Iceland.

Personally, in Mars’ case, he finds that he doesn’t really mind them all that much. There’s even something almost morbidly fascinating about each one…

”I don’t think most people venture this deep.” No pesky Leaguers to interrupt their conversation, thankfully. Just in case, an Unown-? levitates overheard, keeping watch over their surroundings. ”Wild to think that one pokémon managed to do all of this. The reports say it was massive. It isn't the first time Gavin had set foot in this place, yet the frigid landscape with its sculpture garden of Pokémon is no less eerie nor stunning. His breath mists in the air, the warmth of it melting snowflakes in its path.[break][break]

He is quiet and contemplative at mention of the Triad, though a laugh breaks his silence at Mars' comment.[break][break]

"Ah, yes, this reminds me of my mother's garden of frozen souls," he quips. "Right next to the paddock where she keeps the horses."[break][break]

He's joking, of course, though he wouldn't put it past Sienna Quinn.[break][break]

"It's nice to have somewhere cold to go in Hoenn that isn't Shoal Cave," is said more seriously, after a pause. "I think I've explored every inch of that place, especially when I went looking for Articuno."[break][break]

Reports say it was massive. His thoughts circle back to the giant Pokémon who'd brought about the ruin of this place.[break][break]

"Hopefully we don't have to find out."

Still, joking quips soon make way for more serious matters, even if the wild pokémon that venture into their path are far from that: a Vanilluxe, for starters, looking as silly as its evolution line usually does. Naturally, the Unown are quick to deal with the intruder when it gets a little too close to the pair.

”Looks like Ice pokémon are happy with that too. Wonder if these all came out of the cave…” A Luxury Ball is thrown towards the Vanilluxe when it falls, and it’s then that Mars returns his attention to his friend. ”Did you find it back then? Articuno?”

As Mars deals with the sentient ice cream, Gavin's gaze cuts across a Perrserker that's climbed a frozen Pokemon like a mountain, standing triumphant at the makeshift mountain's peak. He leaves it alone; he's already got one of his own.[break][break]

"It's a long way from Shoal Cave..."[break][break]

He frowns, contemplative, his silence broken again by the question.[break][break]

"I did," he affirms. His lip twitches. "I was told I'm too aggressive for its tastes, but that another may find me worthy in time. I suppose that was true enough."[break][break]

He had a lot of respect for the icy legend, but such respect had not stopped him from facing it in battle on the cliffs of Sootopolis during their takeover.

There is something fascinating about how legendary pokémon choose the avatars which serve them; they all have their ideals and traits they seem to seek. Is his own bond different from this? Had the Unown chosen to give him power because he’s the impersonation of some ideal or was it simply because he sought their knowledge and pursued them. Silently, Mars wonders about it as they walk through the iceland, but those are wonders he would never voice even in the company of someone he trusts this very deeply.

”Huh… Never thought of Articuno as some kind of pacifist.” He laughs lightly at the thought, because from what he had heard, the legendary bird is far from it. Still a majestic one, though. ”It was right in the end, though.”

"I don't know if it was a pacifist, per se." Gavin takes a deep pull of his cigarette, his lungs aching from the cold before he exhales. "Just not, ah, my kind of aggressive."[break][break]

What did legendaries see when they looked at their potential avatars? Had it known his history with Rocket, or had it merely discerned his penchant for aggression since he'd challenged it to a battle? Would Rocket have affected its desires one way or another? He would never know, now, unless by some miracle Anderson decided to turn his coat.[break][break]

The rumble of an engine distracts him from further thought, and he frowns at the creature that appears from behind a large chunk of ice.

"Is that a Pokémon?"[break][break]

His Cryogonal intercepts before it can ram the duo with its IRON HEAD, but BANEFUL BUNKER doesn't poison as he'd expect.

"Poison type, or maybe steel..."

Cryogonal seems to struggle in the fight, taking a fair few hits to bring it down. Its FREEZE-DRY hadn't seemed particularly effective, leading the underboss to lean toward steel-typing. He'd have wanted it either way, but now thinks it might suit his personal collection. A luxury ball is thrown in place of a regular pokeball, just in case.

One of the League’s legendary pokémon not being violent will always be beneficial to Team Rocket, and even if they’re willing to fight when necessary, there’s a huge difference between craving conflict and doing so out of necessity.

Such musings are interrupted by the unusual presence of the Revavroom, a pokémon Mars had never expected to see in Hoenn. Then again, a lot of Paldean pokémon have been present as of late, haven’t they?

”Steel and poison, as far as I know.” He confirms, nose wrinkling for a second there. He’s not a fan. Then again, there are worse poison pokémon in the Paldea region, such as his grandmother’s signature: Glimmora.

"It was present at Sootopolis during the takeover. Attacked me, even." Though, thinking back on the situation, Laurence Anderson's first instinct had been retreat. He'd swung around to assist another, if memory served. "But it's no Lugia, for certain."[break][break]

There's a fondness as he mentions his own notoriously temperamental patron. Few of Hoenn's legends could match the full force of her wrath, he imagined, with the corruption running rampant through her bloodstream.[break][break]

A Spheal rolls into his calf as he's pondering the newly-caught Revavroom.[break][break]

"I don't know much about Paldean species," he admits. "If you could share your knowledge with Temp and I, it'd be appreciated." Tempest Quinn was studying their potential effect on Hoenn's ecosystem due to their sudden and unexpected introduction. The Spheal at his feet GROWLS at him, and Gavin spares it a withering look.[break][break]

He clicks his tongue, and Cryogonal FREEZE-DRIES the animated ball. A much smaller sphere is lobbed at its unconscious form before it can roll too far away across the plains of ice.

Amber eyes widen at the titanic Pokémon that wanders into their midst. He covers his ears to deafen the effects of its roar, his Cryogonal setting up a BANEFUL BUNKER in case it should get too close. Thankfully, Mars' Braviary has it handled.[break][break]

A nearby hunk of ice reveals itself to be an Avalugg, disturbed by the titan's rumble. Snow cascades from its sides as the large creature gets up and lumbers elsewhere, undisturbed by the duo or their Pokemon.[break][break]

"I'd love to visit those mountains," Gavin says idly, stepping around a bank of snow. "I bet they make for wicked snowboarding."
