Of all the bars in Slateport, Ritual's his favourite to drink at; their signature OLD-FASHIONED is to his tastes, right down to the notes of sitrus. Though he knows Martín del Mar is more of a gin drinker and might've preferred the Nimbus, he was planning to meet up with Elisabeth Fiorelli later in the night. It's early yet, and he's not so much as tipsy.[break][break]

Mars, he knows, is equally conservative with his public drinking.[break][break]

Tilting his glass in a silent toast to his friend, he takes a drink and leans back in the booth he'd selected, the better to pull them from the prying eyes and listening ears of those crowded around the main bar.[break][break]

"Feels like the first night I've had to relax since it all happened," he admits with a laugh that's weighed by the strain of such a truth. "Hoping to meet up with Temp at Moonblast later, schedules willing. Are you and Barnaby spending time together tonight?"[break][break]

He may not know the status of their relationship, but he knows that the newly-minted admin and Gavin's fellow underboss are close.

Long gone are Mars’ days of drinking excessively and partying until long past dawn. Fun as things like those had once been, these days he’s much more fond of one nice drink had in good company, with great conversation to go along with it – especially when in public. And, when it comes to good company, Cillian Quinn has definitely long since been one of his favourite drinking partners.

Being that they’re not in the comfort of either of their homes, there’s no excessive drinking for either underboss. There is, instead, two glasses of old-fashioned. It may not be Mars’ favourite, but even he has to admit that virgil roach does a great job with Ritual’s signature (the smoked sugar truly adds a delightful note).

”Ha. You and me both.” It really is one of the rare chances they get to relax, isn’t it? Especially with everything that has been happening as of late. The weight on their shoulders is heavy. Yet, even if that’s the case, Mars finds himself smiling.

”Moonblast, huh? I’ve never been. I hope you two have fun. I’m meeting Barnaby at the casino, figured we should celebrate somewhere more private.” His smile shifts to a playful smirk, and chuckling, Mars tilts his own glass as well. It’s only once he drinks that a realisation comes to him. ”Right… I never told you about me and him, did I?”

It’s not like he and BARNABY FINCH have gone around making official announcements or anything, but of all people in the world, Gavin is one of the few that matter enough to Mars for him to want to properly share something so personal and so important to him.

It feels like forever since they'd had a similar conversation with Killian Decker and Mars had seemed reluctant to divulge anything beyond an enjoyment of Barnaby's company. An apocalypse could change a lot, it seemed.

"Congrats. When's the wedding?" He grins, clearly joking. The wedding. He and Tempest Quinn could get back to planning theirs, now that the world's end had been halted. "I'm happy for you, seriously. 'Bout time you made the jump."

Not personally, but I remember her from recent reports.” There’s no need for further specification on the matter, even if this is the section of Ritual where they can speak freely about Team Rocket’s affairs. That’s not what they’re here for, anyway. Although, then again, it does have to do with the success they’re surely celebrating, doesn’t it?

The shift in their conversation is a reminder of that.

”Took a goddamn apocalypse for me to decide I actually wanted to be in a relationship again. Who knows, maybe I’ll tie the knot a second time for the next one.” Mars winks playfully, and it’s a light laugh that follows his statement. There’s a lot that must happen before he decides he’s ready to make that jump, but admittedly, the thought of spending his life with BARNABY FINCH is a pleasing one. He is, after all, the person Mars cherishes the most, to a degree he perhaps hasn’t even shared with Barnaby himself just yet…

He takes another measured sip, savouring the taste of bourbon as a smile lingers at his lips.

”Thanks, though. Really.” It means a lot, even if he may not directly say it. He had forgotten what that’s like: to have people who care enough about his happiness to also be honestly happy on his behalf. ”Never thought I’d be grateful for the whole Meteno bullshit, but here we are. Fuckin’ grateful to have made it through too, no?”

Though they were here for pleasure, not business, Gavin's work bleeds into all aspects of his life. It's impossible to divorce the man from Rocket even for a few hours.[break][break]

"Nice girl," Gavin says of Naomi Sato. "Doesn't seem our type," meaning Rocket's type, "at surface level, but she's very competent."[break][break]

Sympathizing with Mars' reluctance to enter a relationship due to past traumas, he lifts his glass in a silent toast before drinking. Moving on was no small feat. The echoes of the other's past would haunt him still, Gavin thinks, but hopefully a little less.[break][break]

"Wish I could say the same," he laughs, about being grateful for the meteor. "Damn glad we survived it, though."[break][break]

A pause. He considers whether or not he should bring this up (once again, the struggle between business and pleasure) but finally decides it's something his friend and counterpart needs to hear after prior discussions.[break][break]

"I might not have, if not for Walsh." He lets that sink in. "I was next to the Primal Point when it fired. Explosion might've killed me, but he got me out of the way. He didn't have to do that."[break][break]

Gavin's still not sure what to make of it.

Gavin is one of the people Mars is closest with. His best friend, doubtlessly. Yet, even if that's the case, the reality for them is that whenever they meet, business always seems to find its way into their conversations sooner or later. Team Rocket is a large part of their lives, after all; one they're proud of, one they care deeply for, and also a heavy responsibility on the shoulders of both men.

"Walsh?" He is surprise to hear it, and he doesn't bother with hiding it – his eyebrows raising into arches. Mars' immediate assumption would be that declan walsh simply didn't wish to lose a valuable asset like Gavin, but perhaps there is more to it.

"Damn, good thing he got to you in time. What did he say?"
[break][break]
Mars himself had been shielded from the blast by one of his Pokémon, but he had been far enough to begin with. His clone, on the other hand? The clone hadn't been so lucky, and the sight of its demise sure had distressed BARNABY FINCH when thinking it had been Mars himself. Admittedly, he still feels guilty for that one, but only for causing Barnaby pain — the clone's presence had been needed.

Mars is as surprised as Gavin had been, which he'd expected of his fellow underboss. After all, it had not been so long ago that they'd conspired in secret about what might be done about their boss should push come to shove.[break][break]

Perhaps it wouldn't, after all.[break][break]

Gavin laughs at Mars' follow-up, the sound echoing against the glass.[break][break]

"Called me reckless," he says, shaking his head with a small smile, "then said I needn't apologize for failing to secure the crystal."[break][break]

Had he failed a different boss, Gavin imagines they might've let him die.
