He wasn't wrong, in that sense. She'd learned how to mask herself a little too well. Shifting personas came naturally to her, whether it be the aloofness she wore in Rocket, or the polite, demure personality she embodied in her flower shop.[break][break]

Adapting was necessary, when you lived with a man whose tempers were dictated by the slightest misstep.[break][break]

Even so, beneath all the layers of artifice, part of her remained sincere yet.[break][break]

The faintest hesitation preceded the move of her hand over his own, alighting to squeeze it gently with quiet reassurance. It was a timid, stilted gesture, but somehow more honest for it.[break][break]

"Time is a precious thing," she agreed softly. "I am grateful you spend some of that finite gift with me."

Yet Elisabeth's slow, timid movement lends well to them both — he is well prepared by the time her fingers brush his own, and does not jerk away from the contact. His skin tingles with it, the very sensation still on occasion overstimulating to someone who had felt so little positive touch.[break][break]

Tempest Quinn has helped him immensely to feel normal, to understand that not all hands reached out to harm.[break][break]

He shifts his hand slightly to return the gentle pressure, solidarity without words. They understood one another in ways others struggled to.[break][break]

"Yours is a wonderful friendship." There is a certain awkwardness to the words, as if he's thinking hard before they leave his lips, but they are drenched in sincerity. "It would be foolish of me to squander it."

A rosy blush suffused her at his sincerity, and her eyes turned downcast as if to shy away from the reaction, a smile blossoming unbidden in answer.[break][break]

Could she blame the alcohol for evoking such a visceral response in her? Partially, perhaps. Moments of happiness and contentment felt so precious and fleeting. It made her want to hold onto them longer -- covetously, selfishly, miserly even.[break][break]

Her free hand tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, and she fought to suppress a smile that still refused to abate.[break][break]

She wanted to reply in kind, but her tongue was clumsy and couldn't find the words. So her bright red face reflected her gratitude, instead.[break][break]

"I think we're drunk," she blurted out suddenly, and collapsed into a fit of embarrassed giggles that made her all the redder. Whether or not her impulse was born of embarrassment, awkwardness, or the drink itself was up to Gavin's interpretation.[break][break]

Perhaps all three, truthfully, were accurate.

There is a sweetness to her blush, an innocence not often witnessed. In their work for Team Rocket, she carried herself with dignity and composure.[break][break]

He is glad to see her laughing, this time. Happy, rather than sad.

She tried and failed to compose herself, hands flying to her mouth to attempt to silence the fit of giggles that had taken control of her.[break][break]

"That doesn't seem fair, does it?" she managed to say through breathless laughter, playfully shoving him with her shoulder. "You're always so serious. How do you stay so serious, hm?"[break][break]

Sometimes she wished she could do that. Maintain the aloof persona she wore in Rocket, that is, instead of watching it shatter at the slightest push.

Though he remains as serious as her accusation would suggest, Gavin does crack a small smile at the sight of his friend's uncontrolled giggles.[break][break]

"I fear for what I might be driven to do, otherwise," he confesses to her. He wouldn't admit that truth to just anyone. "I do not have a track record of wise decisions when I'm... under the influence."[break][break]

Subconsciously, he traces the scars that mark his left arm, covered only somewhat by faded tattoo ink.

She rolled her eyes at this, though not at him, lifting her drink to wet her lips. It was enough to distract her away from the way that his hands had touched his scars, leaving her unaware of the darker implications of his statement.[break][break]

"I don't know that I'm wise. I've been told when I'm drunk I'm more honest. I don't think it's a compliment, though."[break][break]

The drink was returned to the countertop, a furrow working its way into her forehead. This time, all playfulness had faded out, replaced by a sternness of manner that seemed at odds with the flush in her cheeks.[break][break]

"Honesty is rarely wise."

Gavin liked to believe he was wise, at least when sober. He was certainly not a foolish man. But did such arrogance cancel out any merits of his intelligence? Should he think too hard on it, he'll give himself a headache.

He focuses on Elisa, instead, carefully monitoring her disposition in case it took a sudden turn.
[break][break]

"Rarely, perhaps," he agrees. He'd built an empire on lies. "But I believe it to be freeing, in the right company. One can only lie to themselves for so long before the truth starts to show through the cracks."

There's a grim, regretful note to his tone. He's not thinking of Elisa, but of Rocket's turncoats both current and future.

She blinked at him owlishly, her hand propping her up on the bar counter by the elbow. The faintest signs of exhaustion were beginning to make themselves known on her; the woman's tolerance had not improved between their last attempt at bar outings and now.[break][break]

"People are rarely who they say they are, I was told once. I think it's true, but I can't figure out why it's true. Is it because so many people manipulate so well? Or do you think..."[break][break]

The blonde scrunched up her face, shaking her head.[break][break]

"I don't know. Maybe people just don't know themselves very well."

It's a very deep question. She may not remember his answer in the morning, but Gavin weighs it with the same gravity as if his friend had been stone cold sober.[break][break]

"I'm sure we all lie to ourselves at times." It's a vulnerable admission, but he resists the urge to reach for a drink as he makes it. "Some more than others. I find the truth is... sobering, however."[break][break]

He smirks a bit at his choice of words.[break][break]

"I think it's more that people are nuanced, and that they can be more than one thing at once."[break][break]

Gavin is a happily married man in a committed relationship. He cares deeply for his siblings. He is a scholar, a scientist. He is also a terrorist, a murderer, a monster.

"You have to know which mask you're wearing," she replied, waving a hand in front of her eyes to illustrate. The gesture brought to mind memories of the Winter Masquerade, with the butterfly mask that adorned in her golden filigree. It had done little to shroud her, but it had felt freeing.[break][break]

Not being herself was always so, so freeing. She loved it most of all.[break][break]

"I have a few masks I'm better at than most." She laughed again, but out of discomfort and awkwardness. It was a laugh that inserted itself for lack of knowing what the appropriate emotional response should be, and impulsively filling in that gap with startlement. "The masks where you don't care, where you don't feel, those are useful. You can't let some people know how deeply you feel."[break][break]

She fixed him with a most bafflingly serious look, the kind she offered him when drunkenness had claimed her once and for all.[break][break]

"If you do that, then they know they can hurt you," she explained.[break][break]

Which made his exposing of his own pain, and his own loss, all the more meaningful to her.[break][break]

"Not me, though," she confided. A hand patted his reassuringly, with a childlike sincerity. "Your dreams are safe with me."

Losing herself to drowsiness of drink was a rare pleasure she afforded herself, and to the misfortune of Cillian Quinn, it was a pleasure she preferred to indulge in his company.[break][break]

She leaned against him for support, her golden crown of hair finding a headrest on his shoulder. A soft laugh shivered through her body, and she shut her eyes, smiling a sad, small smile.[break][break]
