He's a little buzzed from the night's earlier festivities when he meets up with his sister at The Burning Maw.[break][break]

As he'd done with previous stops on the crawl, he orders the bar's signature drink: an orange number decorated with a sprig of mint that he sniffs at appreciatively before taking a sip.[break][break]

"Mm. Strong."[break][break]

He couldn't afford to get too drunk; there were several other bars on his list.[break][break]

"Been a minute since we caught up." They've both been so busy after the meteor, no doubt. "How's it been?"

at one time, being here had made her nervous. now, it was a place of comfort. a very occasional stop.[break][break]

she leaned with her elbows on the bar, idly taking in the familiar surroundings. perhaps surprisingly, she wouldn’t be doing the full crawl, so she was more than willing to splurge on a few drinks right there.[break][break]

the signature drink was ordered, in spirit of gavin’s mission for the evening. perhaps a presumptuously, then, she added, ”and two shots of tequila, thanks.”[break][break]

once they were delivered, she set one in front of him.[break][break]

”oh, you know.” her eyes flicked up at his, all the stress of the present pulled into a look of humorous resignation. ”it’s been.”[break][break]

a pause, and she picked up her shot, motioning for him to take his with her. ”i think we should probably change our word.”

"Trying to get me drunk?"[break][break]

Gavin's tone is light, humorous, and he doesn't hesitate to down the shot of tequila that's placed in front of him. So long as he paces himself, he shouldn't have any problem flirting with sobriety.[break][break]

The pull of his lips matches the resigned, dry humour of his sibling.[break][break]

"I know," he agrees, with a heavy laugh. "But hey; we lived. That's something to celebrate, eh?" While others celebrated the holidays, Christmas and YULE and everything else, he would simply celebrate survival.[break][break]

His brow furrows at her next suggestion.[break][break]

"Why's that?"

”no. i’m trying to get me drunk, and i’m enlisting you as my support because you happen to be here.” when he took the shot, she smiled a little. ”much appreciated.”[break][break]
the shots went down and she nudged the empty glass back across the bar.[break][break]
was living something to celebrate? maybe. she wasn’t entirely sure. perhaps it would have been better if they’d just died, but then, it was game over. nothing left to discover, except, presumably, the abysmal afterlife.[break][break]
somewhere along the way to meteno, she had decided that wasn’t what she wanted anymore.[break][break]
”because it’s everywhere.”[break][break]
snow.[break][break]
”i suggested the word because it wouldn’t be a common topic in hoenn. but now…” people were snowboarding. ”it almost feels like home here.”[break][break]
her face scrunched a little at the word. it wasn’t quite right. not home. never really home. too empty. yet, in her brother’s presence, there was a sense of history and belonging that brought about the word. circhester was still a part of her.

Gavin laughs, sudden and sharp, a brightness in the familial amber of his eyes.[break][break]

"Fair enough," he relents, downing the shot.[break][break]

Lulu raises a good point about the snow, Gavin's nose wrinkling at the mention of home. Galar hadn't been his home for a long time. While his memories of the city of Circhester itself were more fond than those of his childhood, it was Hoenn to which he found himself tethered. Strange, that. He's never liked the region and its hellish heat. He still doesn't.[break][break]

But Rocket is here. Temp is here. His siblings are here. This is home, regardless of its many faults.[break][break]

He sees his disdain for the thought mirrored in his sisters similar features and can't help but chuckle. Great minds think alike, or whatever.[break][break]

"Guess you've got a point, there," he concedes. A shame, really. Snow had been an excellent word. He taps his finger on the side of his glass as he thinks. "What about... Court?" An innocuous enough word that shouldn't come up often in conversation, yet the mere mention of it makes his skin crawl. Quinn Court was the name of the family's estate. "Unless you've a better idea, o'course."

court made lulu’s skin crawl for another reason. she’d been to court, a few times before being tossed into a cage for a couple of years. but it was an easy word to sneak into conversation, safely effective with the right inflection or eye contact. it would work.[break][break]

it was also a reminder of home. her eyes lingered on his briefly before she took up her drink. ”court works.” she tested a sip, set it back down.[break][break]

”have you ever thought about visiting?” home. their parents.

Fingers still from where they'd been idly drumming against the side of his glass.[break][break]

"I think if I see him again, I'll fucking kill him." He dreams about it sometimes. Mounting the steps of Quinn Court and opening the door to his father's shocked face. Wrapping scarred hands around the throat of the man who'd doomed him.[break][break]

Fingers resume their rhythm. He looks at his sister.[break][break]

"Would it bother you?" he wonders. "If I did?"[break][break]

In a way, he's almost asking permission.

the way his fingers stilled, she could sense the shift. the prickling she’d caused, instantly regretting the suggestion. their experiences at quinn court had been different. she’d watched from the shadows, not damaged in quite the same way he’d been.[break][break]

however, no one had seemed to care how perceptive she was. how she’d known what was happening, and the cruelty her brother had faced. that helplessness had created something dark and powerful within her, not unleashed until much later.[break][break]

she was quiet at his initial words, eyes returning to her drink. it was his question that made her heart sink into her stomach. she looked back over, searching his gaze for intention.[break][break]

”what?” her voice was soft. she’d heard him, of course.[break][break]

if there was one thing saiorse knew, it was the need for revenge. cillian had yet to get his, so who was she to step in his way? besides, their parents had ever noticed her to begin with. there was no relationship to lose. they thought she was dead, anyways.[break][break]

her eyes drifted away again as she thought, doing her best not to take too long with an answer.[break][break]

”no,” she finally said simply, face like a steel fortress as she took a deep sip of her drink.[break][break]

and something in her gut told her he would do just that. why would he ask such a sick question, otherwise?

The word is so soft as to be swallowed by the hum of activity and life around them, but Gavin sees the movement of her lips and identifies the question upon them. He doesn't repeat it; he knows she'd heard him.[break][break]

He's willing to afford her as much time as she needs to process, but her answer comes quicker than he expects.[break][break]

No.[break][break]

There's a strange thrill of adrenaline that spreads through his bloodstream, heart jumping into his throat and lodging there. He should not feel so excited at the thought of taking a life, but...[break][break]

She wouldn't stop me. Couldn't have, if he'd gone ahead in secret, but he could never do such a thing to her. After all the lies he'd told in their past, he focuses now on mending bridges with truths.[break][break]

"Thank you," he says, after a weighted pause. "I don't know if I'll ever go back, but..."[break][break]

He trails off.[break][break]

"Did you love them?"[break][break]

His own use of past-tense is telling.

Unshakeable though he often was, this manages to shock Gavin.[break][break]

They had been kinder to her, he'd thought, if incredibly neglectful. He had always expected she'd cared more for them than Gavin himself, because...[break][break]

The thickness of grief is edged with a bitterness. Though he'd gone into this night with the intention of pacing himself, he orders his favourite Scotch, neat, and drinks it in full to lend himself the courage to open up to a sister who'd previously rejected his attempts.[break][break]

"Would've done anything for them. Their loss, really." He laughs, but there's no humor in it. "Guess that's why I hate him so fucking much."[break][break]

Hate was so much stronger when born of love.

it was surprising—at first. then, it seemed obvious. gavin had tried so hard to live up to expectations. the idea that their parents had believed in him in some way, presumably, had been enough for a time. cruelty could feel like love. she knew that much.[break][break]

emptiness pooled like a shadow in her eyes. vague, solemn. after taking another sip, she began quiet as she’d used to be, ”i wasn’t blind, you know.”[break][break]

it was followed up with only silence for a long moment, almost as though she was hesitating to continue. regretting it already.[break][break]

”how could i have ever loved them with the way they treated you?”

Gavin's eyes burn with bottled grief, fingers tightening around his empty glass. Yet tears never form beyond a brief shine in the light, blinked rapidly away before they could threaten to fall. That, too, was a product of their upbringing.[break][break]

You're not weak, are you?[break][break]

No. He was strong, but not because of them.[break][break]

His throat is tight around whatever reply he might've reflexively given her, and Gavin finds himself more carefully parsing his words.[break][break]

In the end, what he manages is: "I love you."[break][break]

Where disillusionment with their parents had shattered his misplaced affections, those held for his little sister have only strengthened with time. Regret threads through them, all the things he could and should have done for her, but it fails to weaken the sincerity of his statement.[break][break]

"I don't care who you tell." About who they were. Who he was, to her. "Not any more."[break][break]

Walsh already knew. That danger was long in the past.[break][break]

"I'm proud of you."

it was rattling to hear those words, i love you. it would be the second time ever. her face fell, unable to hide discomfort and uncertainty. last time, there’d been privacy. she’d been almost too drunk to remember the conversation anyways.[break][break]
but she did remember that part. how could she have forgotten?[break][break]
the more he said, the more she felt old pain ball up in a lump in her throat and in her chest.[break][break]
