his three companions are not the only ones to go through an internal struggle. while theirs are battle of the minds, his is quite literal. wheezing for even the slightest hint of air, the PSYCHIC that keeps him aloft suddenly cuts as the rapidash turns her attention onto the intruder. settling with a plot against the leaf colored underbrush, he rolls onto his back, groaning.

meanwhile, on the other end of the 'fight', the enraged psychic-type sends a powerful PSYCHO CUT in the victrebell's direction. that, combined with the ICE SHARDS, and STRENGTH of her trainer's companions, is enough to have the grass-type pokemon wilting in regret.

these few moments were heaven-sent for greyson, as he pushes himself to his feet, face flushed in pain and embarrassment at being ambushed so easily. a leaf breaks nearby, and he turns to offer the 'i'm fine' speech to his presumed comrade, only to come face-to-face with a paper mache looking pokemon.

blinking slowly, it took a moment to place the strange creature. when he did, greyson's hackles rose, and stomach fell. the psychic link between he, and his rapidash, spiked with alarm, and concern. immediately, the horse rounded upon him, galloping through the guillotined forest of bamboo.

his shout was all the ultra-beast needed. ducking, greyson avoids a lethal FURY CUTTER technique, feet pounding against the cluttered floor as he raced to his rapidash. she sends another series of PSYCHO CUTs, but scarcely has time to recognize if they hit. pokemon and trainer collide, and only through training, and the small dose of psychic help, does greyson mount the mare, racing towards his teammates.

maybe this is how things will always be. the three of them seem capable on their own. they seem to care about each other far beyond anyone's capable of feeling about him. maybe they'll be fine on their own.[break][break]

but the sight of the KARTANA snaps him right out of it.[break][break]

"chad! fall back!"[break][break]

more pokeballs pop open, this time his pair of pyroar emerge, tails flicking before a combined torrent of FLAMETHROWER pours out, painting orange and red over a canvas of green.[break][break]

"get back, guys! i'll cover our retreat!"[break][break]

and when he's sure they're safe, then he'll turn and join them.[break][break]

The last thing she wants to do is turn tail and flee. That’s the weak thing to do. She feels soft and weak and pitiful as her abomasnow trails Kieran’s tyrantrum. It makes frustration twist and fester in her stomach, but she also thinks that she’ll only make things worse. That day on route 110 with Uriah and that particularly aggressive bewear comes to mind.[break][break]

And she supposes it doesn’t matter, so long as she can keep her eyes on her brother it’s fine. “Kieran! Are you alright?” For the time being, any of her little irritations have faded. Next she cranes to look back over her shoulder, only expecting the others to be following after finishing off the victreebel. Instead, Greyson is soon bolting by them on the back of his rapidash— pursued by yet another Pokémon.[break][break]

But where’s Uriah?[break][break]

Chad catches up in no time, running alongside her abomasnow as they follow the path through the foliage that the tyrantrum mows down. The FLAMETHROWER that blasts back the kartana answers her prior question just before his shout catches her attention. “Are you sure?” she yells back, reluctant to leave Uriah behind to deal with the brunt of what’s left.[break][break]

Disappointment and disapproval welled up in him, but there was no turning Grunt around as he plowed through the rest of the jungle. They emerged on the other side, careening out and into a clearing that seemed free of danger. How could he possibly tell though? He felt like he couldn't quite trust himself after leaving everyone behind. Sure, it had been Grunt's decision to run but it wasn't like he'd done anything while he was there. He felt like a failure to the slateport rangers. A coward.

There fear mounted almost immediately after. Once his heart had settled for a split second and his mind emerged from the fog of inactivity. "Calla..." He gasped. He'd left Calla. What the hell? What had he been thinking? He spun around, seated on the back of his Tyrantrum as he peered into the gaping hole left in Grunt's wake. Finally, he spotted them, running towards him. His exhale felt momentary, definitely undeserved. What an idiot.

For once, he didn't say anything as they pushed out into the opening alongside him. He didn't even know if anything was still chasing them.

sweat beads his brow and lines his lower back, but he pays it no mind, leaning against the soft but well muscled back of the mare. with a flick of his wrist, he releases his primary partner - delphox.

"sorry man," greyson yells over the chaos, hand stretched, "no heroes today." he grabs uriah's collar and, clenching his jaw, heaves the councilman's son onto the back of his horse. a bubble of psychic energy wraps itself around the man's pyroar, lifting him beyond his will too.

it's not that he didn't trust the man, or anything of the sort. it was, well, just far too dangerous to stay behind. and that wasn't even taking the ultra-beast into account. looking over his shoulder, he spots the beginnings of his pokemon's Z-MOVE. violet smoke begins to trickle out, obscuring vision as it layers the battlefield in it's CONFUSING yet damaging mist. the WITCHING HOUR was upon them.

ultra-beast or not, he didn't envy the creatures left to her wrath.

catching up to the others, they push their way for the exit. greyson sighs in both relief, and frustration, but smiles lightly as the faint echoes of autumn touches his psyche.
