beneath nagi’s feet, past the misty reaches beyond the shimmering surface of translucent bridge, the ground is a long, long way down. he wonders how sturdy the bridge is; if it will shatter if he stomps hard enough. it’s a tempting theory to test. or he’s just delirious with exhaustion. it’s a long way up to the northern mountain. [break][break]

there’s a chill to this place. frost, clinging to the sepia mist. it settles on his skin, cooling the gathering layer of exertion-sweat. should he have brought a thermometer? a barometer? what kind of atmospheric pressure would purgatory have? he tucks his hands into his elbows and pretends that he isn’t shivering, even though ryuji katahara seems like the kind of nice young man who wouldn’t fault him for it. camping equipment jangles in his field pack as he leans forward.[break][break]

“if i keel over here,” he says, sotto voce to his travelling companion (assigned chaperone, more like. glorified babysitter, even.), “at least i won’t have far to go.”

nagi has barely unbuckled his field pack when his eyes are drawn to movement, a glint of colour amidst the neutral greys and misty browns of the landscape around them. he looks up to the flash of bared canines, bright-gold eyes — and a child. [break][break]

he blinks. looks at ryuji katahara and then back at Eris Halla , for confirmation that he isn't the only one seeing things. [break][break]

(and a luxray. and a pokemon he remembers seeing in an illustrated compendium of sinnohian legends — which is a realisation he’s tabling for later, before it overloads the rest of his cognitive systems.) [break][break]

he slips ryuji’s coat off his shoulders, squats and holds it out to the child like how he’d hold an oran berry out to a wild pokemon. see, not gonna hurt you.[break][break] “... are you lost?”[break][break]

okay. okay, cool. a prodigious, prodigal wild-child with deeper pockets and a better head on her shoulders than him, and a tongue to match. (not that either of the first two are particularly difficult bars to clear — but, still. a child.)[break][break]

the coat flaps in the breeze, a white flag as nagi raises his arms slowly in a universal gesture of surrender. he doesn't like the idea of losing an argument with a child, but he likes the idea of leaving the girl alone even less. with a sideways glance at ryuji katahara , he steps backwards and away from the man's hand on his shoulder, tipping his head at the girl in a wordless question: now, what? from the corner of his vision, he can see the luxray shift, sinew and muscle rippling under its fur as it tenses. a chill runs down his spine — a foreboding shiver, unrelated to the mountain cold. he inhales. hot air catches in the back of his throat like a hiccup. his hand snaps out to catch ryuji's by the wrist in warning.[break][break]

and like the celesteela ride with Yui Fujin Silph at the crater, everything happens all at once. fire erupts, bathing the plateau in incandescent light. someone yells, grabs for the girl. something crows from above them.[break][break]

it's the high, guttural screech of a bird of prey.[break][break]

"mime!" his galarian mr. mime drops into position in front of the group, firelight glinting of the icicle at its torso. "protect!"
