Nikolaj didn't go to Petalburg City often; in fact, if he had any choice in the matter, he would never leave the comfortable solitude of Oldale and its countryside. But upon hearing about the arrival of a traveling funfair, he'd promised his wife they could check it out. Knowing Camila, she'd make a date of it, too.[break][break]

So that was how Nikolaj found himself surrounded by loud music, screaming children, and the aroma of exceedingly sugary snacks being hawked by numerous vendors. He'd tried to dress in unassuming clothing, but one of the ticket girls had handed them a pair of free shirts and mascot ears at the gate.[break][break]

"Cami, I don't think this is a good look on me," Nikolaj protested as he adjusted the ridiculous accessory on his head.[break][break]

His wife, however, looked way cuter in the same getup than she had any right to be. They had already taken a picture together and sent it to their daughter saskia volosenkova, Camila beaming and Nikolaj squinting into the sunlight.

When was the last time they went out on a proper date? With everything going on in Hoenn lately they didn't have much time to really considering going out. Rather they were more focused on spending time with each other where they were comfortable, which was their home. Don't misunderstand, Camila loved their home, hell they'd lived there for the last 20 years, but now that they had the freedom to do so, she was glad they could spend some quality time on an actual date.[break][break]

This funfair was already hitting notes that were both expected and unexpected. Expected that children would be running around and screaming at the top of their lungs. It reminded her of when saskia volosenkova was younger and they would take her on trips like these. Kids will be kids after all. Unexpected was how cute and adorable Kolya looked in their matching outfits. They'd even taken a selfie together and sent it to their daughter to commemorate the moment.[break][break]

"Cami, I don't think this is a good look on me," Nikolaj complained as he adjusted the mascot ears on his head. Meanwhile his wife, who looked fitting in the ensemble, stifled a laugh as she looked at Kolya. "Aww my poor Papa bear," Cami's voice trembled as she continued to resist the urge to laugh, her lips twitching as she did so. "But you look so cute! Here let me help." Camila said as she stepped in close, reaching up to adjust the ears. [break][break]

Once she was finished her hands slid down to his face as she gently caressed his cheeks before giving him a playful boop on the nose. "There, perfect. Just as handsome as when I first met ya." she said with a giggle she could no longer hide. Wrapping her arm around his she leaned against his shoulder, "Thank you for humoring me." she said as her steel blue orbs peered up at him.

"Now, where should we begin, hmm?"

By Arceus, she was cute. Nikolaj couldn't help the amused smile that split his face as she booped his nose with a finger. Maybe the mascot ears and matching shirts were embarrassing, but damn it, his wife was having a good time already.[break][break]

"Anywhere you want," he said as they began to meander deeper into the funfair. "The Ferris wheel's pretty and we might get good views. You want to head up there?"[break][break]

Of course, it was on the other side of the fair, so they'd pass by all manner of booths and games before reaching it. Nikolaj was content enough to walk and observe the other guests, but surely Camila would want to play something and win a prize. Maybe he could get something for her and also for Saskia. Women love plush animals, after all.

"The Ferris wheel's pretty and we might get good views. You want to head up there?" He asked as the continued to make their way through the funfair. "Hmm" Camila said as she stared off at the Ferris Wheel in the distance. She sort of wanted that to be the last stop they make for the evening. To wrap up a fun date with a romantic ride on the Ferris Wheel. [break][break]

"Maybe we can take a look at some of these game stalls first along the way." She said just as they passed by one. It was a dart throwing game. You needed to hit the target and pop the balloon. Hit enough of them again you could win a cute prize. "How about we try this one?" Camila asked as she pointed towards the stall. A cheeky grin formed on her lips as she looked back at him. "How about we make it a competition?"[break][break]

If there was one thing to know about Cami it was that she was extremely competitive. Family board game night was not to be taken lightly as long as Camila was participating. She'd been like this for as long as she could remember. A friendly competition was good for the soul after all.

A grin spread across Nikolaj's face when he looked upon the game. He used to play darts when he was younger and had gotten decent at it before his life had taken a dramatic turn. That had been over twenty years ago, but perhaps he still had some skill.[break][break]

Of course, Camila had the advantage since she possessed two eyes compared to his one. But the loss of his other eye had also happened over twenty years ago; he'd grown accustomed to the handicap a lack of depth perception brought with it. And he'd gotten good at working around it.[break][break]

"You're on," Nikolaj said to his wife, stepping up to the stall. After paying 2 PD so each of them could play, he picked up the first dart, aimed, and let it fly.[break][break]

Camila smiled as she reached to pick up a dart of her own. “Excellent.” She hummed. Camila had played darts when she was younger. It was part of what helped her pocket a little extra cash when she couldn’t trust her mother to provide for her. Back then, Camila knew all different types of games. She was fairly good at them too. Of course, what made her better was how she could cheat without being detected, but naturally she considered herself lucky. [break][break]

But that was back then, almost 20-30 years ago. She’d long sense hung up her gambling hat years ago. Once she’d made it into medical school there was no reason to continue doing such devious deeds. Instead she’d promised to live honestly from that point forward. Nikolai went first and did pretty well, she hated to admit. Honestly he did so well she started to get nervous. What if she choked when it was her turn? (And not the good kind either!) [break][break]

Camila kept a poker face on her features as she stepped up to the stall to take her own shot. Her face faltered as she watched her dart miss the target embarrassingly. “Ahaha.” She said as her smile twitched. “Unlucky warm-up is all.” She said as a slight flush colored her cheeks.[break][break]

After Nikolaj and Camila had thrown five darts each, more of his balloons were popped compared to hers. The gangly teenager running the game congratulated Nikolaj and handed him a plush toy of a Wigglytuff.[break][break]

"I think Sasky would love this," the man said as he and his wife walked away from the stall. Tucking the stuffie under one arm, he wrapped his other arm around Camila's shoulders. "And I'll give you your consolation prize when we get home," he added, murmuring into her ear.[break][break]

The couple spent the next hour wandering through the funfair, playing more games and snacking on cheap, sugary food. Eventually, they reached the other end of the park where the Ferris wheel turned. Night had fallen, and the ride's colorful lights made a beautiful, pulsating display against the dark backdrop of the sky.[break][break]

Nikolaj and Camila climbed into the next oncoming carriage and took the seat beside each other, the former automatically resting his arm along the back of the seat to encircle the latter's shoulders.[break][break]

"Did you have fun tonight?" the man asked before placing a soft kiss on his wife's head.

What she might have deemed warm-up luck quickly turned out to not work in her favor as she swiftly suffered defeat at the hands of her husband. Camila barely even tried to hide her displeasure, her cheeks puffed out and rounded as she pouted and sulked while glaring at the popped balloons.[break][break]

"I think Sasky would love this," Nikolaj replied, and she was sure their daughter would love whatever her darling father decided to gift her. Camila's mind was still on her loss. She never did handle losing well, this her husband was well aware of at this point. Perhaps that's why she could practically feel his amusement radiating off of him as they walked side by side. [break][break]

Nikolaj wrapped his arm around her and pulled her close before leaning close to whisper in her ear. "And I'll give you your consolation prize when we get home," Camila quickly felt her cheeks redden as she pushed Nikolaj away in an embarrassed huff. "Y-you think that's enough to distract me?" It clearly was. Because at the end of the day, no one could ever wind Cami up so tightly the way her husband could.[break][break]

Their date continued in relative ease. They played plenty more games and even got to try some of the festival's unhealthy food. Cami might've been a doctor but she wasn't a tyrant all the time. Even she allowed them to have their share of cheat days. Before she knew it they made it to the main attraction for the night, the Ferris Wheel. [break][break]

Camila always felt nervous with these pop up festivals. Overnight they would set up so how safe could this Ferris Wheel really be? She tried to push the thought from her mind as she and Nikolaj climbed into the oncoming carriage and took a seat beside one another. Kolya put his arm around her before planting a warm kiss atop her head. [break][break]

"Did you have fun tonight?" he asked and she smiled as she leaned her head against him. "I did." she said softly as she gently took hold of his hand. "As scary as things were for a moment it's nice to finally have a break like this." she admitted. "What about you? I know this probably wasn't your ideal date but..." she said as she turned azure orbs towards him. "I hope you enjoyed yourself nonetheless."

At the mention of recent terrifying events, Nikolaj made a soft noise of agreement, his mood growing solemn as the memory of the meteoroid, so close to impact, filled his mind as it had filled the sky.[break][break]

He did find his smile again, however, when Camila looked up at him and asked if he'd had fun that night. "I did, but I always have fun with you," he said, meaning it. Then, leaning in, he stole a kiss from his wife, his lips pressing against hers with a gentle intimacy.[break][break]

Their carriage climbed higher into the night, the funfair a sea of color and light spread out beneath them.
