although the idea of challenging gyms for sport did not captivate him before, he had somehow taken an interest to it once he had started the challenge.

it kinda felt like a game of how many he can collect before someone from the current roster retires from their position or something. the completionist in him from his days of non-stop playing of games had him yearn to finish his collection. he decides to start with the people he knows, stormy being next on the list.

kyle enters the venue, a slight upward curve forming on his lips. he was a little bit excited, maybe. while he always told himself that battles weren't his forte, he wouldn't deny the anticipation he got from meeting stormy once again, and as a gym leader this time.

it has been a while since he last saw her, after all.

For some reason, Stormy had been agitated. Almost as if she was expecting someone, or waiting for something to happen. For the better part of the morning she had been pacing the town of Lavaridge. At her side was an equally impatient and curious puppy. On more than one occasion, he had been chased out or scolded for being too nosy.[break][break]

Now though, Stormy had returned to the gym. It looked the same as she had left it, except someone was standing next to the entrance. Now, normally this wasn't too much of a concern, seeing as the entrance to the gym was also the entrance to the hot springs. They were a co-dependent building, and 99% of the time, people were walking in and out with the glow of a day spent in hot water, not because they'd just finished battling Stormy.[break][break][break][break]

This time though, Stormy recognised the stranger at her doorstep.[break][break]

"Kyle? Long time no see, partner!"[break][break]

Growlithe would immediately launch himself up the steps to greet him, stumbling halfway up and scraping his chin on the top step. He quickly recovered, a delighted pant assuring everyone that he had probably not even felt the bump. Tail wagging furiously, he would sit at Kyle's feet, eyes begging him to give him a pat.[break][break]

his attention goes to the growlithe first. his hands immediately found themselves giving the dog a thorough patting and scratching. although his face remains neutral, kyle reciprocates the same excitement to the gym leader's growlithe.

it takes him a second or two before he finally raises his head towards stormy.

"yeah. there really wasn't any excuse for us to hang out until now, huh?"

he has an idea of how gym leaders operate, and he knows very well the responsibility that incur with their acceptance to the position. kyle did not envy them despite their status. more responsibilities usually translates to more work after all.

"ah, yeah, i'm here to challenge your gym... if you're free, of course."

Growlithe's tongue would loll uncontrollably, a happy growl and whine drawling endlessly as Kyle continued to scratch and rub and pet him behind the ears. His tail was a blur, kicking up dirt, and his left hind leg would thump loudly and rapidly in satisfaction. When the boy finally stops, he whines, nudging Kyle's hand and then his leg, begging for more.[break][break]

In the meantime, Stormy had been watching with an amused smirk, one hand on her hip as she'd take in the scene. The first time they'd met, Kyle had been deep in a cave with her and his Poochyena. She had known even then he had a particular love for dog-type Pokemon.[break][break]

Her eyes would dart up to meet his as he finally looked up to speak to her. The smile on her face was genuine and contained a wash of relief. Since their mission to rescue Dahlia, she really hadn't heard from him.[break][break]

"Do you really need an excuse to come see me? I'm hurt!"[break][break]

Though she supposes he's talking about how busy she's been now that she'd taken up a gym leader position. Perhaps it's her own fault she hadn't been in contact with her closest friends lately. She frowns briefly at the thought.[break][break]

"Challenge my gym? Well, I suppose that's alright. I guess I didn't really have anything planned for today. Have you battled anyone else, or am I top priority?"[break][break]

"cait, and alex, kinda. he scratches his chin as he answers her question. you're the third one, sorry."

while it's true that he plans to go for the ones he knows personally first, both mauville and rustburo were coincidentally the closest gyms to where he stays at. travelling all the way out was a chore, after all.

he pats the growlithe one last time before he corrects his posture. "hope you're not using this one though."

people started to coming near the stage, hopeful eyes that were simply curious about the gym leader and her challenger starts to unnerve kyle. it still wasn't what one would call a crowd, but they were there nonetheless. he wanted this though, and so he had no right to complain about it.

"y-your audience is here. should we start then?" he asks, his tone changing noticeably after realizing he was about to be the center of attention.

The third person? A younger, more angry Stormy might have gotten upset at hearing this. But this was a weathered Stormy, a matured Stormy. [break][break]

Besides, Cait and Alex were close friends of her, Alex even closer. Hearing that he had stopped to see them first wasn't as discouraging in the slightest. In fact, it was more than likely that Kyle knew them better than he knew her. [break][break]

She smiles softly at him, brushing a strand of dark brown hair behind her ear. There's warmth behind her gaze, especially after witnessing the kindness Kyle had expressed to her puppy companion.[break][break]

"He's still a bit young for formal battles. Though he's showing a lot of confidence and potential."[break][break]

Murmurs and quiet, half-lidded excitement seem to bubble up around them. People had started to gather along the edges of the field, having caught sight of their gym leader standing in the ring with another trainer. [break][break]

"Audience? Don't tell me you've got stage fright. Don't sweat it, Kyle. They're rooting for you anyways."[break][break]

She'd wink, gesturing for Kyle to take up his position. In a couple of long strides, Stormy would cross over to the other side. As she did so, she'd give a friendly wave to the few people drawing closer, excited to watch another trainer challenge the gym.[break][break]

Growlithe would bound after her, remaining close to her heels and moving as she moved. He knew better than to interfere in an important battle such as this.[break][break]

And, while Stormy enjoyed winning, she felt that these battles weren't about her taking the victory. She had already proven herself a powerful and respected trainer, her job was to teach trainers the same discipline and strength she had discovered.[break][break]

"Are you ready? My battles are typically pretty straightforward, four Pokemon on either side, double battles. The first person to knock out all four of their opponents Pokemon wins."[break][break]

Her hands went to her side as she retrieved two pokeballs. Two elongated flashes of light materialized into a Ninetales and Flareon, both of whom swished their tails from side to side as they stared down Kyle. [break][break]

Heat and energy seemed to glow between the pair, and Stormy would smile in anticipation.[break][break]

he grabs two pokeballs from his holster, releasing one mightyena after the other. both of the canines stood with poise before their counterparts, though Delta immediately assumed a stance, lowering his head, baring his fangs and bristling his fur in an effort to intimidate their opponents. charlie remained composed however.

"i wouldn't be here if i wasn't," he scoffs, trying to lighten up after being caught getting unnerved by the crowd. "besides, i fare better on doubles instead of singles. or at least, i think so anyways."

he knows what both of the pokemon on the opposing field were capable of, having owned both of the same species. it was why he brought out this one certain mightyena over the others.

"delta, taunt. ninetales."

the dark-type released a scoff. his head tilted upwards in a smug display of features, tail wagging as he forced the fire-type's attention to him.

"charlie, snarl."

Stormy's smile was encouraging, and her eyes widened in surprise and awe at the pair of Mightyena he released.[break][break]

"They're grown so much since the last time I saw them! You must be proud."[break][break]

Her attention quickly turned to the battlefield, however, as Delta took to the stage in a firm and intimidating stance. Both Flareon and Ninetales seemed a little taken aback by the ferocity, given that they had done nothing to warrant such aggression. [break][break]

"Sounds good! I'm sure this will be a great battle, then."[break][break]

Ninetales has just begun to heat up the arena. The clouds seem to part and the sun bears down on their shoulders with force, warming Stormy's skin. Both fire-types seem to radiate energy and strength as a result of Ninetales DROUGHT. Unfortunately, the nine-tailed fox is caught off-guard with a taunt from the same canine who had bristled at her earlier.[break][break]

Lashing her tails in irritation, she falls prey to the taunt, lunging forward with flames between her teeth. Stormy would glance between her two Pokemon, calling Flareon to attention.[break][break]

"Flareon, helping hand."[break][break]

While Ninetales hounded down Delta with her FLAMETHROWER, Flareon would match pace, effectively boosting the flames intensity and nullifying the other Mightyena's snarl.[break][break]

flamethrower under the current conditions were less than favorable. taking it head on was out of the question. intercepting it was the only choice given that mightyena weren't exactly the bulkiest of pokemon out there.

"charlie, dark pulse."

a wave of dark energy would be fired from the mightyena's mouth to the flamethrower. the clash of attacks would cause a shock wave from the intensity of the moves, though the flamethrower would eventually win.

though the dark pulse stopped part of the attack, most of the flames still followed through, hitting delta and setting him ablaze. he'd brace himself as the attack hit until his trainer gets a command off.

"delta, eyes are on you now," he'd remind.

as the last of the embers subsided, delta's eyes locked onto the ninetales. there was nothing but a wink that would come from the canine as it used attract on the pokemon of the opposing gender.

Ninetales would show a small amount of surprise as a dark orb of energy smashed into the brunt of her flamethrower. However, the lasting effects of the taunt were enough to encourage her to attack harder, to push the flames even further. Eventually, her strength won out, and she scorched the fur of her opponent. Just as she would recline, however, the hound would wink at her.[break][break]

Odd feelings of disgust and mild interest seemed to swarm her thoughts, and she hesitated long enough to warrant a reminder from Stormy. [break][break]

"You can do this, Ninetales. Don't fall for their tricks."[break][break]

Meanwhile, Flareon would be wide open and willing do protect his partner. While it appeared that Ninetales was out of commission for the round, Flareon would take up his position and flash Delta his BABY-DOLL EYES in an attempt to distract him. Following this, the fluffy evolution Pokemon would literally erupt in flames.[break][break]

LAVA PLUME would spray drought-empowered flames all over the arena. Stormy would sidestep a couple of loose embers, and Ninetales would be effectively distracted from both the opponents taunt and attract by fanning out her tails to try and quell the flames licking at her fur. While she, too, had been hit with the area of effect attack, it didn't seem to bother her much at all.[break][break]

"That's it! Keep it up, you two."[break][break]

minute changes in the battle brought kyle to change the sequence of moves he had planned. though the distraction was mere seconds, every moment counts in a battle. accounting for the time lost brought by his pokemon's lack of focus, kyle submitted to the easy way out.

"protect!"

a protective bubble would surround itself at the canine, with his partner diving straight for the cover it provided. hellfire was prevented, for now. it wasn't a move that could be used whenever though, especially with its nature as a clutch move. kyle tries not to rely on it too much, but sometimes, it can't be helped.

charlie knows what happens next, as well as the gravity of his role between the two of them. eyes would glare at the opposition, laser focus attention given to his responsibility.

"hidden power. flareon."

light would surround the mightyena before it disperses into a shock wave emanating from him towards the selected target: flareon. one would be able to infer to its typing once it lands on the fire-type, with its ground typing proving super effective.

Stormy's jaw sets in mild irritation at the quick wits on the opposite side of the field. It appeared that she was at a slight disadvantage - she didn't have the specific skills that Kyle seemed to have. He had an answer for everything she threw at him. How frustrating.[break][break]

This would give Ninetales enough time to snap out of the taunt, however. Given her lack of ability to attack the last turn, she feared the worst, and instead would open up her mind to put a SAFEGUARD in place. [break][break]

"CALM MIND, Ninetales. Focus on your emotions, keep them under control. Fight the attraction."[break][break]

Her eyes seemed to glow, and she promptly closed them and focused her energy on strengthening her mind. Stormy would snap to attention, however, as Flareon became the target of the other Mightyena's hidden power.[break][break]

"QUICK ATTACK! Light on your feet, dodge it with your speed!"[break][break]

Being a fraction too late to dodge all of the attacks, part of the laser-focused hidden power would pelt the Flareon, dealing incredible pain despite how it had clipped him. this is the shift in the battle that kyle needs.

"we're not letting them. charlie, snarl!"

incoherent noises that would come out of the mightyena, dark energy emanating as low rumbles from the canine's throat sounded. a bark would release the energy at once, going from his location to an area round him, aiming to disrupt clear thinking with its nature.

he turns to the flareon. he knows the risks of letting one reposition itself in the battle field freely, having used maneuvers similar to that before. kyle is taking precautions.

"intercept the flareon, delta."

the quick attack meant his mightyena wouldn't be able to reach the flareon even if he wanted to. the mightyena improvises, moving away from his partner for a running start.

delta stops abruptly, leaping and hitting the ground with enough force through rock smash. bits and pieces of rocks would be chipped off from the stage, flying straight onto the flareon's path.

Maybe all of that practice blocking out some of Stormy's more annoying and childish companions had worn off. Ninetales calm mind washes away most of her worries as she opens her eyes. Her senses are now suddenly flooded with the sound of snarling and barking, but that too she starts to tune out.[break][break]

In response to his incessant need for attention, Ninetales decides to give him the satisfaction. Hot embers pour from her mouth, alive in their entity as they soar across the field, seemingly having a mind of their own. The WILL-O-WISPS dance and frolic as they seek out their target, hopefully sticking to the mutt like glue.[break][break]

Following this, Stormy would call out to Ninetales, a cheer in her tone as she points at Charlie.[break][break]

"Use hex as soon as he's burning, Ninetales. Don't let him push you around. This is your battlefield!"[break][break]

With a gasp, Flareon finds himself in a predicament. Where once the Mightyena was right in front of him, ripe for the body slam of a lifetime, all of a sudden he was running up ahead. And then, with a great boost of effort, he rock smashed the terrain. The stage would crumble, throwing the debris in his face to try and slow him down. [break][break]

And, to Stormy's dismay, it had worked. Flareon would come to a halt but appeared to be boasting a limp as if he had injured his paw. As he limps off to the side to nurse his injury, the Pokemon will be warming up to use BABY-DOLL EYES, milking it for all he's worth. [break][break]

"Oh dear! Flareon, baby!"[break][break]

Stormy almost steps out onto the field, clearly worried.[break][break]

Unbeknownst to her, however, Flareon is anticipating that one of the dark-types will seize its chance to attack him, and he will be ready with a FIRE FANG to the face.[break][break]

kyle wasn't exactly trying for the flareon. no, his main goal is to keep it away from his other mightyena. his role is to keep him safe. when kyle sees charlie under attack, he quickly issues the command.

"disengage, delta."

the mightyena pulls back from the assault, intimidating the flareon in response to the act of charm it attempted. fire fang won't hit, if he does attempt to do so. he races for his teammate, though it was too late to protect him.

o-oh...

the flow of the battle changes when the ninetales opts to inflict burn to his charlie. there were no further reactions from kyle as flames caused burns on the canine's figure. the follow-up move's power was tanked due to type advantage and snarl's secondary effect. charlie laser focuses on the task.

"move in."

quick feet activates. the dark-type charges in like a blur towards the ninetales, using the brief moment after the attack as an opening.

he stops to where charlie was, positioned in between the flareon and the other mightyena. delta is aware of his role as support, howling to attract the ninetales' attention to him instead of his partner.

charlie finds himself nearby the ninetales in under a second with the sudden boost of speed. he glows white, ready to expel a wave of energy at the fire-type up close.
