this event was, of course, to celebrate and endorse AKURA, his family's company. yet, it also served as a foundation from which lobbyists with ties to the AQUA initiative could disseminate their ideologies. they would be subtle, of course, but gabriel knew how powerful a well-articulated sentiment could be.

nevertheless, taking a moment to himself, gabriel stepped off the main floor and onto a nearby balcony. the wind carried the faintest hints of a chill, but it soothed the councilman more than it bothered him.

taking a sip of champagne, gabriel took in the splendor of the city in quiet contemplation.

Floristry had its way of maneuvering Elisabeth into unexpected galas and events.[break][break]

Ornamental vases and floral arrangements had been placed about the banquet hall with artful presentation, prepared long before the event had begun in earnest. A pleasant conversation or two later, and she had found herself welcome to stay as long as she liked for the rest of the festivities.[break][break]

Which was just as well, as she hadn't anything better to do. Nor many opportunities to wear dresses like this one.[break][break]

She flitted from one light conversation to the next, its witty banter and repartee whispering of a bygone era of the florist's life that she relished in, despite the fact she didn't long for those days in the slightest. Finally she tired herself of discourse with strangers, taking a moment to enjoy the view outside on the balcony.[break][break]

Only to find the first face she truly recognized.[break][break]

"Councilman Black."[break][break]

A tip of a champagne flute indicated her greeting as she glided over to stand beside him, the others gathered behind them in the banquet hall nothing now but a murmur of distant, far-off voices. Elisabeth tilted her head at him curiously, a faintly amused smile on her lips.[break][break]

"Bored of your adoring public already?"

"miss fiorelli." his tone offers no warmth against the evening chill, but then again, it hadn't really last time they spoke either.
[break][break]

"there is not a soul in that room that is not in this for their own interests," he says in reply to her earlier question, speaking that unspoken truth he knew she was most likely aware of.

"but, even i needed a moment away from their prattle." gabriel takes a sip in appreciation of the newfound quiet, before lowering his glass to the center of his chest once more.

"i would not have expected you to attend one of AKURA's events. is it to your liking?"

Light, airy laughter left her lips, polite in its soft cadence. She turned her attention back to the glamour that they'd both abandoned for solitude, then returned her gaze back to the taller man with a shrug of her shoulders. The sequins of her gown shimmered with the movement.[break][break]

"It is about what I expected it to be. These things all become something predictable after awhile, no?"[break][break]

She leaned forward on the balcony, the champagne flute dangling from her grip; for all its apparent thoughtlessness, however, her fingers remained firmly wrapped around the delicate glass. It sparkled dimly in the ambient starlight, its remaining golden liquid twinkling with the gentle turn of her wrist.[break][break]

"What sort of other events am I meant to be at, Councilman?"

[attr="class","gabe2"]despite his investigations into elisabeth's backgrounds, her presence was a welcomed one. his instincts were as placid as a lake's surface despite her proximity to him, and that alone was enough to warrant a measure of caution from the councilman.

in his mind gabriel had already come to two conclusions about this woman. the first was that she was simply a rather unimpressive florist with a rich family history, and an eye for the finer things in life. the other could only reason that behind the veil this woman wore on a daily basis lie something far more dangerous.

but, gabriel was a lion, and very little could harm a lion so easily.

"they do," he says rather simply. far more bothersome than the prattle was the routine of it all. on nights like tonight, all he could feel was his wheels spinning, but he himself was going no where.

"perhaps that's a question you could answer for me, miss fiorelli. is this your routine night, or is your idea of a night out something differently entirely?"

Another laugh warmed the evening air, this one brighter than the last.[break][break]

"I think you'll be disappointed by my answer, I'm afraid."[break][break]

She brought the champagne to her lips, sipping it leisurely for a moment as she stared up at the night sky. For all the finery of the event, it seemed to pale in comparison to the naked beauty of the constellations above. From these heights, the light pollution was fainter than elsewhere, though it was a far cry from the celestial wonder that she could view in the Petalburg Woods.[break][break]

"I spend most nights, if I am to be honest, trying to entertain myself. Reading, mostly. There are times I've been fortunate to have good conversation, but those are far and few between. Nights like tonight are a pleasant divergence from the norm."[break][break]

Late nights discussing potential warfare against Mossdeep technically qualified as fascinating discourse, she supposed. That implication was hidden in her sly smile, its coy deflection reflected in the impish light of her emerald eyes as she studied him.[break][break]

"I'll hazard a guess nights like these are your routine, and that you privately long for the nights alone that I find myself endlessly saddled with?"

weeks spent cooped in the hospital, and physical therapy, had driven the councilman mad. the physical pain of it all paled in comparison to the mental and emotional. the humiliation; the inaction; the ineptitude of a cripple. even now the accompanied thoughts of those memories has gabriel instinctually grinding his teeth and flexing his jaw.

he couldn't afford a simple night curled around a book. not anymore.

[break]

from the lip of his sleeve, noticeable only because he shifts the glass from one hand to another, does the matte black sheen of his metallic arm catch the light. the digits are more slender than his own natural flesh, but carry easily enough force to bend steel. yet, here they were delicately pinching the neck of a far too expensive glass of champagne.

[break]

"perhaps once i wished for nothing more," he admits at last, sipping the alcohol, "but responsibility keeps me trudging onwards. the path i'm on is long, and winding, and with no end in sight."

for the first time gabriel turns to look at elisabeth. his expression, as usual, carries no mirth.

[break]

"i'd have been more disappointed if you said you actually enjoyed these things on a regular basis. i would have been made to reassess my measure of you."

The severity of his stare as it met hers sent a shiver through her skin, one that she couldn't entirely blame on the cool night air. His very presence embodied the sensation of power, and to have his full focus upon her was oddly illuminating in the ways in which she lacked power of her own.[break][break]

No, the florist of Petalburg was not the same as Underboss Fiorelli of Sootopolis. She held no great standing here.[break][break]

"I'll confess something to you, Councilman Black."[break][break]

She balanced her champagne on the balcony railing, the empty glass perched just-so.[break][break]

"There was a time where events like this were my constant dread. I became a little too well-acquainted, I think, with how to say pleasant niceties without saying anything of substance at all. It was a tiresome routine."[break][break]

She offered him a brief, fleeting smile as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.[break][break]

"I do not miss that life in the least. But I don't mind reminders of it, from time to time, as a novelty of sorts."[break][break]

Her hands fell to clasp in front of her, her posture immaculate and statuesque as she regarded him.[break][break]

"Does that affect your measure of me, I wonder?"

His appraisal would find an unshaken dignity in her bearing, the dim starlight setting faint, intermittent twinkling across the sequins of her blood-red gown. A single red rose framed her face, tastefully placed within silken curls of coiffed blonde hair, vibrant with its own ephemeral beauty.[break][break]

Should he linger close enough, he could inhale the scent of her perfume, breathing in tantalizing notes of lily-of-the-valley and honeysuckle.[break][break]

A slow, cat-like smile crept across her lips with silent amusement as he sipped his champagne.[break][break]

"Very little truly matters in this world. But I find you interesting, and it would disappoint me to learn the feeling wasn't mutual."

Something she rarely enjoyed, in gatherings like this one. The woman stepped closer, red skirts swirling about her as the stiletto of her heels clacked across the stony balcony. A ray of moonlight fell over her as she breached the distance between them, illuminating the jewellery that sparkled ruby-and-gold against her pale skin.[break][break]

At his unexpected question, however, her footsteps arrested in place.[break][break]

"They are an ambitious terrorist organization," she replied evenly. "Their hold over Sootopolis is both an impressive and concerning thing."[break][break]

All the while, her gaze held his. Searching for a reaction.

"You're a businessman," she continued, this time walking towards him only to pass him by. A hand lightly grazed his shoulder, drawing his attention to the interior of the gala. "You know better than most how easy it is for the appetite of ambition to ruin men."[break][break]

Her eyes meaningfully lingered on a few of the attendees that such biting commentary might relate to -- a few Devon employees, for example, that had made the rounds -- before returning her attention to the taller man. At this proximity, there was previous little space left between them.[break][break]

"So yes," came her unbothered admission. "It is impressive when such lofty ambitions are met, and then maintained, in the face of opposition. I do not believe in underestimating my enemies, Councilman Black."[break][break]

When she faced him now, she could see every shift in his expression, every minute dilation of his pupil.[break][break]

"Do you?"[break][break]

He could observe her as intimately, too.

even as elisabeth performs for him here, directing his gaze where she wills, he's the picture of unbothered. but, the mention of enemies stirs something in him. something left buried deep. something unresolved.

unconscious thoughts of the day his arm was quite literally ripped from him, muddles the self-control he normally exerts. the grip of his artificial limb tightens around the neck of the glass, and in the blink of an eye, shatters it.

glass tinkers to the floor, but gabriel's gaze remains fixed on elisabeth's.

"no, elisabeth. i do not."
