Maybe he shouldn't have been so nervous, but this was his first gym battle. To be quite honest, Rook felt like he was the last person in the world qualified to take on the role of trainer, but his boyfriend was very... encouraging. In a good sorta way though. He scanned the small crowd formed around the arena and spied lam logan lingering out there before giving a little wave. The other gave him an enthusiastic wave with a beaming grin, looking like a total dork. Rook, instead, could feel the nerves in his smile quiver just a little bit as his hands returned to grip anxiously at his pokeballs.

He should be confident, yeah? Sure, he could totally do that. Or, at least, he could pretend to be confident about it. He'd spent enough of his life pretending, but right then he wanted more than anything to feel it for himself. Maybe that was the point of the gym battle. He'd soon find out.

Luckily for the nervous young man. He had wisely chosen to battle outside the show hours. And so he was spared the announcer’s jabs and the humongous audience that it so often attracted. Instead, those who watched were trainers from far and wide scouting the Gym for every edge they could find in hopes of improving their own chances.

It also meant that he got Johanna dressed in a more casual laid back attire. Even so, with her long blue hair, she fit right into the Jester’s theme with or without costume. But this wasn’t about her. No, a challenger stood in front of her. Small quiver in his smile, anxious grip on his Pokéball. He might’ve tried to hide it, but Johanna was all too familiar with what he experienced to not notice.

“First time?” She asked.

“Don’t worry I am sure you’ll do fine. Just focus on having fun, okay?” Johanna urged the trainer on as she summoned her two fighters, a Snorlax and a Tinkaton, both ready and eager to fight.

"That obvious?" He laughed nervously, as if that were obvious. Any attempt to steel those nerves felt pointless, but admittedly, he was happy to see that at least she was nice. "Okay yeah." He could have fun, that was why he was doing thing. Okay, there were plenty of reasons he was here beyond just having fun, but that was an important one. What would be the point otherwise?

A Tinkaton and a Snorlax, a tough pairing for his own. Both his Nidoqueen and Zoroark looked up at him eagerly, showing a willingness that had been hesitant at first. They were counting on him to be confident, so really he didn't have any other choice.

His Zoroark would be wasted on the Tinkaton, so he quickly directed her at the Snorlax instead. "Night Slash." Then to Queenie, he directed her and she lashed out at the Tinkaton with EARTH POWER.

It brought Johanna a small bit of comfort to hear him agree. Though she knew all too well that words meant little when it came to nervousness.

But all that could wait, for the battle began.

Wisely Ikarus tried to have his Pokémon aim for Pokémon they wouldn’t be useless against. But alas Johanna would not make it so easy.

“Ruby Focus on Zoroark, Kevin, Nidoqueen.”

Her Pokémon had gotten their targets.

Snorlax reacted quickly, grabbing the Tinkaton and chugging it toward the Zoroark. Though it saved her from the Earth Power, it did make her hit the Night Slash, which did hurt her a little bit. Luckily it was not the first time she’d been thrown by a Snorlax, and so she managed to fire off a DRAINING KISS toward the Zoroark.

Meanwhile Kevin felt the full force of EARTH POWER and he was none too pleased about it. It hurt, and hurt a lot. And so he charged toward the Nidoqueen. His fur took on a steel shine as he came charging with a HEAVY SLAM.

Most of his experience with pokemon had been befriending the unwanted ones in dumpsters. Most of his passion for them had been odd adoptions, dumpster diving with poison types or sneaking into places he wasn't supposed to be with ghosts. It wasn't exactly the right setup for battling, maybe. His boyfriend had been the one to talk him into it and he still wasn't sure if he was quite as good as the other said he was, but alas... he would try. Not just for Lam but for himself.

Whoever controls the battle, controls the conclusion — that much he did know. He liked games, maybe he would have been better suited for her carnival aesthetic (because he was a clown). Johana was good though, he had to give her that. She was splitting up the team, forcing them into a fight they weren't designed to win.

He gritted his teeth as Queenie was hit with the brunt of the heavy slam, knocking her back. Yet she braved the most of it, albeit pretty stubbed by the looks of it. She righted herself, retaliating with SUPER POWER. Meanwhile, Jinx was not in a position to win against the Tinkaton. Taking the hit from the draining kiss, clearly was enough of a first hit to make him worried. So, instead he redirected her back to the Snorlax, handle one before the other. She attacked him simultaneously with DARK PULSE.

The Snorlax was by no means quick on its feet. That weight required time once it had begun to move. This weakness allowed Nidoqueen to deliver a powerful counter attack.

Snorlax gasped as it felt like its insides were pummeled. And not long after it felt a powerful blast of dark energy hitting him in the back. It groaned and growled at nobody in particular, nobody but itself.

A purple aura with yellow streaks began to envelop it as it jumped forward aiming to crush the Nidoqueen beneath a GIGA IMPACT.

Meanwhile the Tinkaton was wasting no time in pursuing the Zoroark. This time channeling her DRAINING KISS into her hammer, a personal favorite stylistic choice of hers. A puckered kissy-mark appeared upon the blunt side of the hammer just before she would try to smash the whole thing onto the head of Zoroark.

Rook felt a little guilty for teaming up on the poor snorlax, it felt like a dirty tactic. However, wasn't that the name of the game? Maybe he didn't have the spirit to be a trainer, like his boyfriend. It wasn't in his nature to want to hurt pokemon, but he wanted to be better still. Maybe it got easier with more experience.

He grimaced though as Queenie was pulverized by a giga impact, a nasty hit that had her reeling. Though it was the massive attack from the Tinkaton that drew his immediate attention. Jinx wasn't gonna go another hit at this rate. She was barely clinging on as it was. "Queenie," He drew her attention to the Tinkaton, she last out with Earth Power. Meanwhile Jinx last ditch effort as a DARK PULSE on the snorlax. This was entirely too close for his liking.

Summoning great power required a lot of effort, especially so for Snorlax. It felt his body aching for a moment's respite. But Ikarus rightfully didn’t grant it.

A Dark Pulse hit the Snorlax right in his blubbering stomach, the fat jiggling for an almost comical amount of time as the Snorlax tried to stay standing.

But Snorlax fell. Knocked out. Johanna was quick to recall the Snorlax, she wasn’t surprised that it was over so quickly for Snorlax. It was the crux of battles after all, that though time felt eternal, it could be over quickly, especially.

But this battle hadn’t been lost yet. Tinkaton was still there.

Speaking off.

The Earth Power washed over the battlefield. Certain to hit the charging Pokémon if it didn’t do something. Luckily Tinkaton was better at dodging than her teammate. She slammed her heavy hammer into the ground using its force to send itself and its hammer flying into the air at her intended target. Another DRAINING KISS smack at the ready for when she’d get close enough..

Yes for this battle, she truly was a one-hit wonder.

Rook felt guilty, watching Snorlax faint. It felt almost somewhat even more shocking considering how big it was. It probably should have been exhilarating, and it was, but it was also the unfortunate part of battling. If anything, he shouldn't have been distracted by it because before he knew what was happening, the tinkaton was crashing down on Jinx and she was fainting quickly after. He winced, recalling her back. "You did a good job." Sometimes it was just a bad pairing and, in this case, that was true.

After that it was 1v1 again, just his nidoqueen and her tinkaton. The buzz of his nerves felt like they tripled in that time and yet also evolved into something more defined. It felt more like adrenaline. He probably wouldn't win, but he would try his best. He redirects queenie then and she lashes out at the Tinkaton with SUPER POWER.

One opponent down. Crushed beneath the smack of a hammer. But it fought bravely.

Johanna gazed at the trainer for a moment, taking in his reaction to the knock-out. She gave him a silent approving nod, one that he might not have noticed.

Back to the battle. Nidqueen came charging with SUPERPOWER enhancing its body. Closing the distance quickly as it lashed out. And this was where Tinkaton found the hammer to be unwieldy. It was not as much of a close range weapon as one might think.

And so with one lucky strike the Nidoqueen managed to slam down upon its foe, knocking out the Tinkaton and winning the match.

To this even Johanna found herself baffled. Pondering if perhaps for a moment the Nidoqueen had found some hidden power within itself at the sight of the Zoroark’s defeat.

Whether that was the case or not, mattered little as the Tinkaton was pulled into its Pokéball. She gave the trainer a round of applause, and so did those few souls that had been watching. She then proceeded to walk over to him, badge in the palm of her hand. She extended it to him alongside a few words.

“Congratulations, here, for a well deserved victory. But most important of all. I hope you had fun!”
