THE BORDER IS A MOUNTAINOUS PURGATORY OF MUTED SEPIA SMOKE. By floating islands, translucent bridges soar through the realm toward the heavens. Tall stone spires jut out from the spiritual mist. In the sky, the wisps of spirits can be seen heading toward their final destination before the afterlife...[break][break]

Curiously, there are four broken seals embedded in four mountains. Though Adrian Malcolm and YVELTAL may have seen their location upon their unceremonious entry, the spirit realm has shifted since their last visit, rendering each broken seal far apart from each other.

Death had always been a strange topic for Fritz to approach. He wasn't afraid of the idea of it all because it was bound to happen to everyone at some point. It's just that he wasn't one who came face to face with such heavy topics. So to be on the literal precipice of life and death felt like some sort of awakening. Is this what those yoga freaks called enlightenment? Wild. As he furthered his stride, he caught sight of a boat with an unfamiliar pokemon guide. Given the gold that surrounded the creature, Fritz could only assume the thing wanted to be paid. Ok, work sis.

As he reached into his pocket, he managed to pull a few coins out. Would human money suffice? God, he hoped so. As he placed the money before the Gimmighoul, the creature quickly swiped it up and stepped aside so that the blonde could pass. It wasn't long until he took his seat upon the little ferry. He simply sat there and filed his nails a bit. Surely more people would show up, it'd be a boring boat ride if he had to simply vibe with a pokemon that wasn't his own.

"So like, people here are dead, right?" he inquired. "Does that mean we're dead?"

The creature eyed the ranger and gave a laugh that chilled Fritz himself to the bone. Well, he supposed it was one way to shut him up. Fritz went straight back to filing his nails. This was going to be a long trip, huh?

There are even times when it knocks on her door, even when she's put out some kind of restraining order or bugged her front lawn full of medical traps. And thus, as is tradition with becoming a resident of Hoenn, one must learn to embrace both the pain and the strange beauty that is death and that which lies beyond.[break][break]

After hearing from Rowan Wrynn about how he revived a pokemon that he had killed, she's been drawn in by that very thought. What if she could replicate something along those lines? Would she be able to rewrite her past? Would she... be able to change the very bits of life that make her waver and crumble to this day?[break][break]

Her grip tightens around that precious leatherbound journal, her eyes glued to the path ahead as she carefully clambers up a rocky slope. Reiner is there by her side, gently nudging her and giving her a lift where she needs it but at the very same time, he's listening out for voices, attempting to figure out if a detour is in order.[break][break]

When they finally catch a view of the Gimmighoul ferryman, they hesitate for a brief moment at the presence of another. And yet, is a lone traveler more invested in filing than nails than looking at their surroundings really a reason to balk away? He's most certainly a stranger and doesn't seem to have any pokemon at the ready...[break][break]

"A ride for two!" She calls out, rummaging through her pocket and pulling out two shiny coins as an offering. But when the Gimmighoul stares at her, cocking part of its row towards her backpack, she sighs and reaches further in to retrieve another piece.[break][break]

At long last appeased, the little ferryman hops to the side to allow them passage and she wobbles right on in, making sure to sweep the tail ends of her sygna suit into the boat before taking a seat. Reiner quickly follows after, finding most comfort in simply plopping down next to her and snorting as the water sloshes loudly around them.[break][break]

There's a bit of silence that settles between the adventurers, with Eris taking a deep breath and pressing her hands together as she looks to the stranger. A second passes, then another, and before it's even been a minute, she cracks.[break][break]

"So uhm... out looking for ghosts today?"[break][break]

Vanilla came into this strange little land alongside the other two people that had been waiting in front of the riverbed. LIke always, Proxii had been floating around her while curious about the state of where they were. "I don't think we're in Littleroot Town anymore." he observed. The girl cast her floating phone a look as if to burn a hole inside of his screen before returning her attention to the sight at hand. A lone ferryman guiding his ship to the river of death and decay. And when he turned to reveal his terrifying face, it was-

A Gimmieghoul?!

Vanilla looked at the small creature with confusion. This didn't exactly seem like the kind of intimidating all things considered. But the other two people were going with it. She quietly flashed two coins of her own as Proxii took a quick scan of the little guy.

Gimmighoul, the Coin Hunter Pokémon. This Pokémon was born from passion that seeped into a coin. It wanders, apparently seeking to return to the treasure chest it once inhabited. It survives by draining the life-force from humans who try to pick up its coin.

And so they were off. The three enjoyed a nice and semi peaceful boat ride as the younger trainer looked around the river. The man spoke up about whether or not they'd be dead. An interesting question! Vanilla had been wondering that as well, putting a finger to her chin in thought. "Well, you guys aren't falling through the boat, so I'd say no! The others around certainly are though, kekek~"

Vanilla grabbed Proxii as they were ferried away, with the other girl starting up a conversation between the three of them. Proxxi perked up his the safety of her hand, with the Rotom chiming in, "You two, huh? I thought this place would have a bunch of ghost types to catch, but we weren't expecting this."

His lips curled a bit in distaste as he looked upon the two companions that seemed to fall along on this trip. They looked rather... young to be on a trip like this. He wouldn't patronize them with a comparison to children, but they were both a far cry from adults. But as he quirked a brow at the fellow blonde who happened to speak up about ghosts, he couldn't help but give a laugh. It's not until the pinkette's Pokedex spoke up to them. For a moment, he brushed it off and addressed the first question.

"Duty calls, Slateport's branch wanted an investigation and guess who was the lucky ducky to do it," he sneered, then turned to Vanilla. "You mute or...? I'm just guessing since your little device there seems to be doing all the talking, don't take it as an insult."

Fritz not going out of his way to insult someone? That was a first. As the boat lurched forward, they seemed to come up on a waterfall, and the ferryman seemed ready to go right through it. He wasn't really in the mood to get drenched, so he sent his Dewott out to take care of the little problem. It used Water Pulse in an attempt to bend the water around them from completely soaking them and the ferry. It managed to be successful, only allowing a little mist to hit the passengers of the ferry. He had to admit, it felt refreshing.

As he looked in the river, he noticed the way some souls managed to line it. Fritz withdrew his Dewott and carefully reached a hand in. It wasn't long until slimy phalanges wrapped around his wrist and threatened to pull him in. At first, Fritz resisted, but more began to tug at his wrist in an attempt to pull him overboard. As he lurched over the side, the ranger attempted to push away, finally having enough resistance to push off the side of the boat and yank his arm out and away from the ghastly specters that floated within the rivers around them.

"Jesus Christ...," he whispered to himself as he floundered away from the edge. "Well there's definitely ghost types here, but not in the pokemon sense. And I think they're more interested in catching us."

Perhaps a sense of envy that the three of them had the opportunity to live life? Maybe they wanted that for themselves. Unfortunately ghosts always targeted the weakest willed among the group and his money was on the quiet one with the pink hair.

"I think we've got a bit on this boat ride. Let's get to know each other a little. My name's Fritz, and as I mentioned before, I'm a ranger in the Slateport branch."

She cocks her head at the Rotom, taking note of @fritz's observation as she watches him struggle against the strange forces of nature. It must be rough for them to sense something living just poking around in something she can only assume to be their guts. Still, she does wonder what would happen if the man fell right into the murky soul water. Would he get swept away? Pulled under to become one of the many?[break][break]

"I'm Eris, this Luxray here is my best buddy Reiner!" First things first, she needs to introduce herself to not seem rude, her hand resting upon Reiner's mane as she proudly announces his name. "And well, we're actually here because we're looking for something! That's hopefully not a ghost!"[break][break]

She senses the wave of excitement and worry that emanates from her backpack, keeping a rather cheery smile as she looks to Vanilla Kingsley.[break][break]

"It's just you left!"

Hm, from what it sounded like, the man with the two girls seemed to have been called for this, likely against his will by the sound of his voice and expression. Proxii shot him a pretty concerned look before Vanilla caught some of his ire. She leaned back a little with her hands out and palms facing the man. As if to try and pushed back against some invisible force to sway his bad attitude. Although he did have some kind of restraint as he said not to take it the wrong way, though it was pretty hard not to. "She's not good with new people," Proxii explained, "Kind of rough experiences, but after a bit, she'll warm up." As if to mirror the sentiment given by her companion, Vanilla nodded her head along after fumbling to push her glasses up the bridge of her nose. The group passes under the waterfall and then given a visible example of what lies beneath the water and why not to touch it. As the man tried to free himself, Vanilla leaned forward to lend some kind of support and help free him from the grasp of the tendrils below. Whether it was help or not was anybody's guess. "I guess they're not too big fans of you guys. Good thing I'm safe from them, kekekekek~" His snickering soon came to an end after Vanilla shot him a little stink eye.

Then came introductions! The man's name was Fritz, a Pokémon ranger. She appeared fairly more interested in him, having found herself somewhat curious about their duties and if he may have some kind of help he could offer them. The other younger girl on the boat with them would introduce herself as Eris and her Luxray, Reiner. The Rotom would quietly scan the Luxray as his speaker would be turned down at a safe 10% volume while he and Vanilla listened.

Luxray, The Gleam Eyes Pokémon. Luxray can see through solid objects. It will instantly spot prey trying to hide behind walls, even if the walls are thick. Seeing through solid objects uses up a lot of Luxray's electricity, so the Pokémon sleeps for long periods of time to store up energy.

It came time for the two of them to introduce herself, as Vanilla fidgeted a little out of discomfort. A beat of silence came as Proxii looked towards before before picking up her slack. "I'm Proxii, a RotomDex and RotomPhone combo. Her name is Vanilla, and we came here from Galar to train for that gym challenge and work on her culinary skills." Vanilla kicked her feet out on the boat, smiling timidly while giving a small wave of her hand. Curse her social anxiety!

"Anyway, you said you were a Pokémon ranger, right?" Proxii asked, turning to Fritz. "We've been looking for somebody as well. Would you or the other Rangers have some sort of database for people they find in the wild?" Vanilla would appear more invested in the topic, her soft expression hardening to one of focus while she'd await an answer to their question.

It definitely felt odd to talk to a rotomdex but he supposed he could vibe with it. But thankfully it seemed that the pink haired girl could understand them at least. Fritz had no qualms as he offered a hand out for the Luxray that Eris had introduced as Reiner. It was a show of trust as if to gesture that he meant no harm. If the Luxray chose to sniff his palm, then by all means. Fritz soon retracted his hand and cocked a brow at the rotomdex.

"Sorry buddy, you're barking up the wrong tree in that aspect. I'm second from the bottom rung, so I guess I don't have access to that sort of stuff," he admitted, then turned to Eris. "And you'd think, but it seems we're a bit spread out at the moment, but it's fine. We're fine."

He offered a pained smile, but one could definitely see the exhaustion in his expression. Fritz made it quite apparent he was here out of obligation rather than self-interest. For a moment, he looked away an towards the hull of the boat. While he sat still, it seemed his shadow had opted to animate itself. He blinked in surprise, but quickly brushed it off. This was just exhaustion getting the better of him, he was certain of that. His Dewott spat a water gun in his face to get his attention, but it seemed to help. He shook off some of the water and narrowed his eyes at his Dewott.

"You little shit." The Dewott couldn't help but offer a smug smirk.

But it didn't stop the way he was almost certain that his shadow had moved independently of himself. It wasn't long until he took note that other shadows seemed to be doing that.

"Uhh, guys?" he questioned as he pointed out their shadows.

Before the scene could go on any farther, the ferryman docked their boat. It seemed they'd reached their destination, wherever that may be. They probably should have worried more about their shadow situation, but it seemed like the ferryman wished to usher them off the boat instead. He supposed he could respect that. But still, he couldn't help but watch his shadow as if it were another person along with him. Fritz's Dewott pushed him foward. The creature seemed to sense this was just a distraction.

[attr="class","inner-finally"]There had been a time where she'd been mute like that and it wasn't all that uncomfortable for her, really. It had been as if something simply blocked her mind off from being able to think of anything and she had found the world to be much nicer when she wasn't forced to speak to those she didn't know. And it seems as if the two are hitting it off without her, so she hums to herself, kicking the air and wondering whether her boot straps are tied tight enough as she listens in.[break][break]

On the other hand, Reiner seems rather hesitant in his approach, cautiously sniffing the hand that Fritz offers (with the memory that he'd stuck them into the river just moments prior) and attempting to decide whether it's the smell of man or ghost he's getting. Still, when met with the sight of their shadows moving, the Luxray immediately turns his attention to his own ward. And no matter how much he may squint, he can't quite seem to spot her shadow moving. In fact, he can't quite find it at all.[break][break]

The realisation is conveyed through a growl, to which Eris merely cocks her head and watches the ground as she moves her legs around. He's right, it's gone missing and despite her past experiences her, she doesn't quite have an answer.[break][break]

"Huh... weird!" Her cheerful disposition gives nothing away about her thoughts, her smile as bright as ever as she jumps to her feet and hops off the boat. "Well, you know what they say about adventures! If it's not an imminent threat, keep it at the back of your mind but don't let it scare ya!"[break][break]

As she talks, she seems to be busy observing the area, ducking every so often as a stray droplet falls from the ceiling. Her feet wander slowly but surely, never quite slipping on the slick rocky ground or stumbling over whatever protruding surfaces exist.[break][break]

"If I'm right, places like these tend to hide something important. Liiiike... that!"[break][break]

Up ahead, something strange awaits them - A seal seemingly broken by unknown forces. Pulling out her journal, Eris begins scribbling something, looking up every so often before resuming the scratching of her pencil.[break][break]

"I remember seeing one of those before. Dunno what they mean though."

The sad news that the Ranger in front of them was only a lowly ranking one and unable to access that kind of information was a bit disheartening. Both Vanilla and Proxii appeared distraught and let down from the news, the girl especially having her mood sour. "Well that sucks..." Proxii said, his screen's expression one of melancholy. "Not about your rank. We've been searching around for somebody is all." The two watched as Fritz went to go and raise his hand to the other younger girl's Luxray in an effort to presumably pet him. Yet the discovery of their shadows moving independently was a bit of an upset from what they had been expecting the ride to be like. "Uh, either of you know what's going on?" Proxii asked the others, their shadows dancing across the boat. Vanilla watched in awe while they reach the end of their boat ride. Vanilla hopped out after Eris as they wandered ever so closer inshore.

The sound of water droplets hitting the ground as the group wandered about. The cold, slippery stone ground made it a bit hard to keep one's footing in, but Vanilla was managing. The silent trainer followed the trail of Eris while her head kept twisting and turning each way to make sense of it all. This entire area was kind of willy wonky, and she often found herself confused more than anything. EVentually, they'd stumble upon a large seal which emit a faint light within. "Whoa...You've found one of these before? Is it some kind of door or something?" His answer came in the form of Eris not knowing what use they served either. He shot her a look before his phone body hovered about. The other of the two would walk closer, wishing to get a closer look as she adjusted her glasses. The reflection of the seal in her eyes could only capture a fragment of the fascination she had with a new discovery. Vanilla basked in its greatness, her mind racing with possibilities for what this could be. Maybe some kind of new puz-

Something and run into the girl and phase inside of her, causing her to stumble forward off balance as Proxii would be on alert and hover closer. "Vanilla!" Her head went limp, remaining motionless for a moment or so before it picked itself back up. But as she turned to face the other three, her eyes now shined a brilliant golden color.

"Finally!" Vanilla spoke, her soft voice put on display for Eris and Fritz as she'd take a prideful stance before them. "I, Kraven Darkshadow, shall have his vengeance against those Rocket lapdogs for their treachery! Nobody seals Kraven in the freezer and gets away with it!" She snarled, looking back up at the two before blinking in confusion. She looked her body over, with Proxii giving her an honest look of confusion. "What...Does you seal make you crazy or something?" he asked, looking towards Eris as Vanilla would come to terms with her new height. She'd look at her glasses and then stammered out an astonished, "How'd I end up in the brat with the glasses! I was aiming for the pretty boy! Hm, no matter! Kraven Darkshadow shall bide his time, awaiting the day when"

"Hey, wait a minute! You're a ghost!" Proxii said, his screen showing an angry glare as he pushed himself in front of his possessed owner. "And a bad one at that! Who dies in a freezer anyway! Go enjoy your death somewhere else!"

"FOOL! YOU DARE TALK THAT WAY TO THE DYNAMO OF THE DUSK? THE EMPORER OF EVERYTHING EVIL?"
"WHY DON'T YOU PRETEND TO BE A NORMAL PERSON AND GIVE MY OWNER BACK"

The two went back and forth arguing with one another for a while, with Kraven remaining boisterous about his many accomplishments in life and Proxii having some colorful prose about what exact he thought of the other ghost.

This was bad, this was really bad. It seemed a spirit had possessed Vanilla. As Fritz contemplated, he focused on his training. Wait, why was he so keen on his training right now?! Fritz breathed in and allowed himself a moment to concentrate. As he searched around their allotted items, he stumbled across a Sootfoot Root. There was something important about them, but what?! He breathed in and attempted to keep on track again. Right, Ranger training told him that these were good to placate spirits. Fritz took the root and a bottled water he'd brought along and began to grind the root down, carefully mixing it in with the water.

"Sorry, Vanilla, but this is gonna be necessary!"

As he raised the bottle, he poured it onto the younger trainer in an attempt to get it into her mouth. If he could manage, that meant they could get the spirit from her and focus on getting it to pass on. But it was ultimately up to Vanilla herself to fight the possession. Once the bottle emptied, Fritz crumpled it up and threw it back into his bag. He felt bad absolutely attempting to drench the poor trainer.

For now, he hopped out of the boat and offered his hand out to Vanilla. They needed to storm ahead and search this seal. But he wanted to make sure the possessed was better. Perhaps in the meantime, Eris could search up ahead. However she was in perfect health it seemed. Vanilla was likely exhausted. He'd probably have to carry her.

When it comes to the unknown, it's probably the best to approach things with caution and discretion. But when another person somehow is drawn in by curiosity and ends up paying the price, she really has to put down every bit of wariness and address the issue at hand.[break][break]

Once her hands go into her pockets, they come out with an ocean blue orb - Crystalline in nature as power begins to swirl.[break][break]

"You know, for all the rumours I hear around headquarters, I've never heard of a Raven Markshadow." Even as she taunts, she watches as Fritz douses Vanilla with water and can't quite help but squint. "Just give it up before I send you back to the freezer on their behalf."

"Get outta her!" Proxii bumped into his owner as Kraven bounced back some, grabbing a hold of the possessed phone with a grunt. The two continued to wrestle around with one another as Fritz would jump into action with the his root and water combination. Kraven would finally push Proxii off of him as he stood before the defeated Rotom. "FOOL! NOBODY CAN STOP KRAVEN, THE UNSTOP-" A stream of water would pour onto Kraven's head, causing him to scramble and brush it off his hair. "What the-" Proxii used this moment to rise up and force his head up and swallow the water being poured into his mouth. The Rotom Phone held him there as his limbs flailed.

"WHARRGARBL!"

After all of the water had passed, Vanilla's body would fall to her knees, finally able to control herself again as the spirit's presence would diminish. She groaned to herself as Proxii would quickly jump into action and hover back to collect the spell tag near the group. "Hang on, Vanilla! This'll draw out that ghost!" His wings plucked the tag into the air above him, crackling as a a faint shadow would come down behind him. He arched an eyebrow at the sudden shadow and turned around just in time to-

A sickening thud could be heard, Vanilla's phone skittering away as it was broken in pieces by the force. But that's not what made her so panicked. It was the sight of her Rotom lying still on the ground nearby. "PROXY!" she cried out, tears forming in her eyes as she pushed the spirit out of her body. The wiggling remnant of a person squiggled around before fading away entirely. She rushed forward into certain danger, trying to grip the lifeless body of Proxii as she'd gently shake him. Her voice quaked as he never responded back.

"Wa-Wake up...Wake up, Proxii! This isn't funny..."

Unfortunately it seemed the Rotom didn't survive a harsh attack made by an ominous presence. Though it wasn't long until he caught sight of a glowing orb that seemed to float around them, as though it wasn't ready to pass on quite yet. Not large enough to be the soul of a person, but perhaps... Well, this was the border between life and death, was it not? He looked to Vanilla with a flash of concern.

"Hey, hey, it's ok. Proxii is gonna be alright, but... I think he wants to lead us somewhere. I promise we'll get the little guy back in one piece. Ranger's honor."

Fritz gave a salute as he offered a hand out to her. He didn't wish to touch Proxii given Vanilla would likely wish to take the creature with. Once they were properly out of the ferry, Fritz took the lead and jerked his head to the side as if to request that Eris and Reiner follow them along. As he followed the mysterious orb, it wasn't long until he came across a broken seal. It seemed something within had either broken free of its own accord, or someone or something else had disturbed the seal.

"Is this what Proxii wanted us to see...?"

Before he could get a proper answer, it seemed the spirit lured out by the spell tag came back for more, as though it had followed them. Was this whatever had been beyond the seal? It was possible. But he didn't have time to think. His best bet was to send his Annihilape out, given its partial ghost typing.

"Prepare yourselves, this might be dangerous!"
