[attr="class","skullbody"]Maybe Isaac's general hesitance to go to Sootopolis should've been an early sign that he wasn't a great fit for the Rocket regime.[break][break]

It was a strange city, to say the least. It was equal parts more lawless and more strict than most parts of Hoenn, a living contradiction. It was more isolated from the Hoenn region than any other, accessible only by a single entry point at the top of its basin and a high-pressure undersea tunnel down below. Those who lived there were an eclectic blend of people who welcomed Rocket's rule, people hoping to take advantage of it for their own anarchic ends, and people who couldn't make it out before the doors slammed shut.[break][break]

It wasn't an atmosphere that Isaac much cared for. But it seemed he wasn't alone.[break][break]

As he passed Rowan's house, he wondered if it was always so . . . sparsely decorated. The last time he'd visited the Beast, his home had been surprisingly lively. The sounds of free-roaming Pokemon always made the place seem so warm, and it had that lived-in appeal that set it apart from Sootopolis' more historic architectural styles.[break][break]

Now it seemed quiet. Too quiet. Was something wrong on Rowan's end? Maybe it wouldn't be the end of the world if Isaac lingered around to check. He ducked into the shadows of a nearby alley, keeping his eyes and ears open for some good old fashioned eavesdropping.

[attr="class","rowwtw"]A sigh escaped Rowan's lips as he closed up another box, dragging the tape dispenser across the top to seal it closed and push it aside. "You know this would go a lot faster if you'd help, instead of playing." Mistral responded in a series of trills that sounded as though they were mocking Rowan's cadence before they leapt face first into the box of packing peanuts, splashing around in the styrofoam and spilling more than a few on the floor.[break][break]

"We need to be out of here by tomorrow if we want to make this work, Mistral." Rowan spoke to the wind, realizing his words were going over the Pokémon's head, but not aware of who might pick up on them. Until the eavesdropper made themselves present, there would only be the soft sounds of more boxes being filled and a playful Prinplup.

[attr="class","skullbody"]So that's why Rowan's house was so quiet. It was nearly packed up. Only him and his ever loyal Prinplup remained, packing diligently for some sort of upcoming move. Or, rather, Rowan was packing diligently. Mistral was playing around and making an adorable mess of everything.[break][break]

They needed to move fast. Their deadline was apparently tomorrow. A deadline for what? For making "this" work, apparently. Isaac had no clue what a this was, but apparently it entailed some sort of move.[break][break]

Was it a vacation deadline? No, most people didn't take cardboard boxes filled to the brim with stuff on a trip. It didn't make sense to be a move, either. Isaac was no real estate mogul, but he was pretty sure that there wasn't a time limit on actually moving into a piece of property. So why so much rush to pack up the place?[break][break]

Part of him wondered if he'd learn more by lingering around. Another part of him feared that Rowan would pop into his house and never come back out, leaving this mystery forever unsolved.[break][break]

Maybe he could orchestrate a little chat.[break][break]

Isaac pulled back, avoiding earshot just in case, and slow-pressed the release on two Pokebalks. Watson the Totodile came out, along with new catch Delirium the Ditto. Delirium, reading the tension in the room, clamped an exaggeratedly large hand over Watson's mouth before he could start making Watson noises.[break][break]

"Del, morph into a soccer ball and roll down the block. Watson, run after him and try to keep up. And look really sad while doing it, okay?" The two Pokemon shot Isaac baffled looks, but ultimately nodded. Delirium shifted into a soccer ball and bounced around the corner with a thud, Watson looking quite distressed as he scrambled up to it.[break][break]

Isaac himself would remain hidden for now. After all, timing was everything.

Aquatic Pokémon were Rowan's weakness, he couldn't resist getting to meet one of them. "Mistral, I'll be right back." He stood up, dusted himself off and stepped out the door. The Prinplup shrugged and leaped head first into the box of packing peanuts, swimming through the debris as though it was water itself. "DON'T EAT THOSE EITHER!" He called out as he passed the window.[break][break]

"Hey, little fella!" Rowan tried to chase after the Totodile, attempting to keep up with their frantic scurry towards the 'soccer ball'.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Bounce, bounce, bounce! Down the road, the ball went. Every time Watson got close enough, Delirium snapped his wibbly-wobbly body, making the ball just too fast to reach. Watson's genuine shock only made the bit more convincing as he desperately hustled down the road.[break][break]

Before long, Rowan was following. Watson turned over his shoulder to greet the familiar Beast, firing off a wave and a cheerful rasp. In that time, the ball bounced even further away. Distressed, the Totodile flailed a little, breaking into a speedy shuffle to try and make up for lost time.[break][break]

Luckily, with his longer legs, and with Delirium subtly steering the "ball", Rowan would be able to make all the difference in this chase. Soon, Rowan would be well within catching difference, a tired Watson huffing and puffing as he started to lag behind.

"Almost like this thing had a mind of it's own, huh?" Kneeling down, he offered the soccer ball towards the Totodile with a friendly smile, making sure not to let go of it before the Pokémon had a firm grip. The last thing they needed was for it to get away again, right?[break][break]

While Isaac watched from the shadows, the man couldn't help but feel as though there were eyes on them as well. A glance over their shoulder would reveal a familiar Prinplup standing in the alleyway behind them, eyes fixed on the Rocket with a METAL CLAW already prepared, assuming them to be someone who was out to hurt their trainer. An attack wouldn't come just yet, but it was clear Mistral was watching them for any sudden movements.

[attr="class","skullbody"]Excellent! Rowan had taken the bait, and Watson was now happily dancing aroudn him with a ball in hand. Now he could oh-so-inconspicuously come running after Watson, huffing and puffing up a storm from the exhausting chase through Sootopolis' streets. From there, he could thank the Beast for taking time out of his busy day to help Watson out, strike up some small talk, and maybe see what was going on with the whole moving thing.[break][break]

Before he could stride out from the shadows, he felt a pressure burning holes on his back.[break][break]

He tried to ignore it. He tried to come strutting out. He'd come up with a perfect little plan, and he wasn't about to just ruin it. Unfortunately, it was easier said than done. The more he tried to move, the more the pressure bore down on him. Finally, setting his feet, he compromised with the bad feeling in his guts; a peek over his shoulder. Just a quick one. How bad could it be?[break][break]

Like a mugger in an alley, Mistral loomed behind him, steel glinting off of his barely-concealed blade.[break][break]

"O-oh! Hey, Mistral," Isaac said, flashing a more nervous and shaky version of his trademark winning smile. "Didn't see ya there! Beautiful weather for some urban exploration, huh?"[break][break]

Yeah, no. He wasn't buying that. Sighing, Isaac dropped the act. "Okay, realtalk," he said, letting his voice drop to a whisper so they wouldn't be overheard. "I saw you and Rowan packing stuff up earlier. I wanted to chat with you guys, but I didn't want to just interrupt. Especially 'cause you guys were being all hush-hush and stuff."[break][break]

"It's been . . . hard, lately. Real hard. So I wanted to make sure you guys were doing okay."[break][break]

It was hard not to think of the pain that Eris Halla had just been put through, the only reason why Isaac even dared set foot in Sootopolis. It was hard not to think of the scars of war, still lingering on the people Isaac loved months later. It was hard not to think of the recent string of defections, Rocket after Rocket deciding the organization no longer worked for them.[break][break]

It was hard not to think of how his own struggles mirrored theirs.

[attr="class","rowwtw"]Narrowed eyes remained locked on Isaac for a long moment after the man finished speaking, as though deciding whether or not to believe the man. Finally, Mistral lowered their readied Metal Claw, determining there was no threat intended from them. [break][break]

"Isaac." A voice from the other side of him, Rowan having returned with their Pokémon following closely behind. [break][break]

"Good work, Mistral." [break][break]

The Prinplup trilled happily, waddling over across the alleyway until he was standing at Rowan's side.[break][break]

"What brings you to my place?" He decided to ignore the attempted ruse, assuming the other had good intentions in mind.

Isaac had always been on the more innocuous end of Team Rocket members, so he decided to take the man at his word. [break][break]

"Come in, then." A hand ushered Isaac through the door, Mistral quickly following him inside to continue their play among the packing peanuts.[break][break]

Once inside and behind locked door, Isaac would get his explanation.[break][break]

"I'm leaving, and not just Sootopolis City." [break][break]

Not foolish enough to speak treason in the daylight, he let the other Rocket discern meaning between the words.[break][break]

Why did he trust Isaac with this information? Perhaps it was their jovial demeanor or harmless nature, but Rowan saw a kindred spirit among the other man, someone else who was in far too deep over their head with no escape.

Rowan's revelation was as sudden as it was huge, and yet Isaac's assurance was near instantaneous. Why? Perhaps he remembered the struggle Remiel Calcifet had been going through mere months ago. Perhaps he was considering his own second thoughts and seeing kinship in Rowan's struggle. Perhaps he knew the role of a Beast wasn't one Rowan wore well.[break][break]

Or perhaps the only reason he was still here was because he loved his fellow Rockets. He wanted what was best for them, even if it meant cutting ties from the organization.[break][break]

He took his phone from his pocket, looked it over, and then flung it as far out the window as he could. It was a show of respect from him to Rowan, a sign that his words were backed up by actions however minor.[break][break]

"That means we're all alone," he said, willingly putting his life into the former Beast turned former Rocket's hands. "You can tell me as much of your story as you need. Isn't fair for you to have to carry this burden alone."[break][break]

Isaac wanted his story, so Rowan would indulge them of their empathetic curiosity.[break][break]

"It's been an ongoing struggle, since we took this city. It was an accident, but I killed the Fallarbor Town Gym Leader's ace Pokémon during the invasion. That was how I became a Beast, because of a mistake I made and regretted." Rowan opened his fridge, grabbing two of the solitary beers remaining on the shelf, one for himself and one for Isaac.[break][break]

"Gavin tried to assure me it was necessary, that killing would get easier the more I did it." A grimace crossed his face, popping the top of the bottle and taking a small drink.[break][break]

"I don't want to kill, I don't want to hurt Pokémon, and yet that's what Team Rocket expects of us. It's how they control us." So begins the treason, but there was nothing else to lose at this point, the decision had already been made.[break][break]

"They want us to feel trapped, like we have nowhere else to go, that we belong here and deserve to be monsters like the rest of them. It's not true, though."

Maybe that was more reason not to sleep in the sub. If Rocket could plant a bug on him while he slept, who knew how many traitors they'd be able to round up?[break][break]

Still, he made good on that promise. He listened, trying to imagine the agony that poor Rowan was put through. It was one thing to be a gentle soul forced to take a life, by accident or by necessity. It was another to be crowned for it, forced to ride atop a throne of guilt and lies while presiding over a domain he never wanted.[break][break]

"I hear that one all the time," he added. That refrain "it only gets easier." Was it supposed to be encouraging? Or was it supposed to be a shift in blame? "I don't know if I'll ever believe it. The more death I see, the more it disgusts me."[break][break]

It was something they had in common. Neither of them asked for this fate. Neither of them had that instinct. The more it was forced on them, the more it made them want to run away from it all. It was ironic. Had they been sheltered from the consequences in ivory towers, perhaps they would still be diehard loyalists.[break][break]

Rowan was getting into high treason now, and Isaac couldn't help but nod along. "I never wanted this," he admitted. "I just wanted to fight for a better world. A world that wouldn't let so many people - talented people, brilliant people, good people - slip through the cracks. But, fuck, man. What's better about what we did to Littleroot? How are we any different from Kanto these days?"[break][break]

Trapped. That was exactly how he felt. That was exactly what they were. "They tell us we're gonna be free, and strong, and together. But those are all just a bunch of chains they trick us into putting on, aren't they?"
