Tendrils of pinkish-purple dream mist curled around Nomi's legs as she crouched down in front of the crack in the seafloor. Around her, Tera crystals glinted in the dim light, their jagged edges jutting out of the ground like multi-colored teeth. Valerian sniffed the mist, his shining blue fur a beacon in an otherwise murky landscape.[break][break]
"The way it moves...it reminds me a little of your miasma," Nomi noted to Cillian Quinn, crimson eyes alight with wonder. She glanced up at the Underboss, a small smile on her lips. He was keeping watch for any approaching League operatives while she investigated the rift for Seal Stones.[break][break]
The dream mist crawled up her arms as she ran her hands through it. Around her, the world began to distort slightly. It was a subtle thing...at first, just a faint fuzziness to their surroundings. But then her ears caught a low whispering coming from...everywhere?[break][break]
Ask him.[break][break]
She blinked, straining to hear.[break][break]
Ask him![break][break]
All around them, the scenery melted away. No longer surrounded by the dark depths of the Ultra Deep Sea, the two of them were surrounded by a strange landscape. The inside of a laboratory, one that Nomi didn't recognize. Dream mist... Had her subconscious mind manifested this?[break][break]
"Gavin..." Was he still with her? Could he see this?

Where Naomi Sato is smiling, seemingly enthralled by the INTERDREAM MIST, Gavin's countenance is grim. Prior experiences with the mist have taught him well of its dangers, and a sense of unease grows in his gut.[break][break]

"Be careful," he starts, tearing his eyes from the landscape for a moment to settle upon her. "It's..."[break][break]

But his warning has come too late.[break][break]

Though Gavin does not hear the incessant whispering that plagues the head scientist, he does see their surroundings shift... into somewhere all too familiar to him. Perhaps to her, as well, considering.[break][break]

Is this your doing, or mine?[break][break]

He frowns, trying to focus on what the place had looked like before... but it retains its haunting likeness to the KANTO LABS.[break][break]

"I'm here," he says firmly. "Dangerous. I was going to say that the mist is dangerous."[break][break]

He reaches for her in the mist, hoping to provide an anchor.

She found his arm: solid, tangible, real. She stood, clutching onto him, staring with wide shocked eyes at their new surroundings. She reached out with her free hand to try and touch a nearby lab table, but when she did so, her hand passed right through it. An illusion?[break][break]
"Where are we?" She asked, voice soft, a mix of awed and apprehensive. The lab felt familiar, like she'd seen something similar. "It looks like...our labs, on the submarine..." But it wasn't those labs, she knew those labs like the back of her hand. This room was subtly different.[break][break]
There were ominous, dark stains on the floor. Tools hanging from a wall that looked more like implements of torture than scientific equipment. But she did see beakers, test tubes, scales, and vials of various liquids atop the table she had tried to touch. Stacks of paper, a digital tablet, a collection of Pokeballs. Someone had been working in here, running experiments.[break][break]
Ask him what happened to them.[break][break]
A sudden dread filled Nomi, the hair on the back of her neck standing up. She had never seen this lab, but she suddenly knew exactly where it was. When it was.[break][break]
"Kanto..." She breathed, whispered like an incantation.

"It's not our labs."[break][break]

Like any of the Wilds, the Deep Sea carves deep impressions on the psyche. Hard though Gavin tries to block out those memories that the mist pulls into being, the length of time he has spent here without a sygna suit has worn him down.[break][break]

As he gives in to his past, the imagery around them sharpens. Details fill in the suggestions of walls until it is no different than if they'd been standing in the labs themselves, with Raphael Pryde at their helm. What Naomi Sato registers as only a digital tablet and some notes, Gavin remembers as his own. He remembers how desperately he'd craved the approval of his betters, how hard he'd worked in spite of Rocket's cruelty toward him.[break][break]

Kanto. She whispers it, and Gavin closes his eyes.[break][break]

Nods.[break][break]

"Yes."[break][break]

It is not only the space he remembers, but the people.[break][break]

Her parents as he'd seen them before the incident. As Nomi wonders what had happened to them, the DREAM MIST twists Gavin's knowledge to provide an answer. The lab in chaos, blood fresh upon the floor.[break][break]

"Merlino." One of the Head Scientists, their voice echoing as the whispers had. Only unlike then, Nomi would hear it, too. "Get over here and help clean up this mess."[break][break]

"You don't want to see this," he assures Nomi, voice tight with concern for her. His eyes are closed, but that doesn't stop the mists of memory from weaving a tapestry of violence. I don't want to see it, either.

Despite the warning - and though every fiber of her being was screaming at her to look away - Nomi's crimson eyes remained wide open, staring at the gruesome scene unfolding before her. She was frozen in place, unable to move, unable to act. A different voice - not Gavin's, but Raphael Pryde's - echoed in her mind. Words that had been gouging holes in her heart for nearly a year.[break][break]
"They had an interesting concept but couldn't deliver, and in Rocket when you can't deliver bad things can happen Ms Sato."[break][break]
"What happened?" The younger version of Gavin muttered, reluctantly walking away from the lab table where he had been working. He approached the head scientist - a younger version of Dr. Pryde, Nomi realized with a jolt - who had summoned him. As he moved, the perspective shifted with him, as if Nomi and Gavin were watching some kind of extremely realistic movie.[break][break]
On the ground, two disfigured bodies lay sprawled in a pool of thick blood. They were missing limbs...eyes...ears...Nomi's stomach turned over, sick, as she realized that, even though they were severely mutilated, she could still recognize them. She might not have, if not for the fact that she'd "met" them recently, in The Border, as well as seen pictures of them as a child.[break][break]
"Murdered by their own test subjects," a different voice, another scientist Nomi did not recognize, sighed. Her tone was loathsome, dripping with disappointment. "Careless. And without conclusive findings. Pathetic."[break][break]
Nomi held Gavin's arm in a vice grip, her knuckles turning white. A small, anguished cry escaped her lips.[break][break]
And still, she could not look away.[break][break]

With eyes closed, Gavin can still hear the echoes of his past.[break][break]

Arceus, but how meek he sounded to even his own ears. Though Nomi could not see his younger self, perhaps she'd notice the way he hadn't looked Dr. Pryde — or any of them, for that matter — in the eye. How he'd recoiled at the sight of the death and dismemberment but not dared to look away. She wouldn't know why, however. Gavin knew why.[break][break]

Don't show your fear.[break][break]

Fear was a weakness. In Kanto, weaknesses were exploited by those who held power over you.[break][break]

He knows that Naomi Sato has disregarded his warning when he feels her fingers tighten around his arm, her grip painful in its desperation. He doesn't pull away. Her cry is gut-wrenching, because he remembers all too well what she's seen.[break][break]

He opens his eyes, realising that his attempts to fight the mist have been in vain. Nausea and dizziness that have nothing to do with the gruesome scene before them churn his stomach. He swallows back bile, surrendering.[break][break]

"I'm sorry." She has mostly known Gavin to be stoic and unyielding. Now, the softness of genuine regret colours his deep voice. "I'm guessing you didn't know."[break][break]

From the sounds of it, Pryde had only been so forthcoming.

Distantly, she registered the sadness in Gavin's voice. A much gentler tone than was typical for the Underboss. Distantly, she registered the feeling of wetness on her cheeks, the salty taste of tears as they fell past the corners of her mouth. Distantly, she registered that her eyes were still staring ahead, watching as the younger Gavin began to clean up the mess her parents' murderers had made. Their own test subjects...[break][break]
Memories churned, and Nomi heard the screeching voices of the spirits she had encountered in the Border: They tortured us! And: I died on their operating table, Sato! Answer for their sins! Her body trembled as the weight of what her parents had done settled onto already weary shoulders. She, too, had killed people with her experiments...but they'd been traitors. Criminals who would have been executed regardless. They had given their bodies to science rather than allowing their deaths to be a waste. It had been a mercy.[break][break]
To use innocents...civilians...[break][break]
She could ask Gavin for more information on their experiments; she could find out exactly what their failed hypothesis had been, why they had needed human test subjects...and where those people had come from. She could find out every scrap of knowledge Gavin knew about the horrible series of events that had befallen her parents, find out if they truly deserved their fate. She could have all her questions answered, and more.[break][break]
She shook her head as if to banish those thoughts, lest the dream mist latch onto them.[break][break]
"I'm sorry too," she whispered. "For what Kanto did to you."[break][break]
She turned her back on the mist, on the younger Gavin, on her dead parents. She threw herself at the older, living, breathing, present-day Gavin and buried her face in his chest. She clung to him, wrapping her arms around his torso, not caring what sort of etiquette she might be violating by hugging a superior.[break][break]

It is a rare moment when Gavin allows anyone other than Tempest Quinn to touch him, yet he shifts to pull Naomi Sato against his chest as she cries. Arms bearing the scars of Kanto wrap her into a comforting embrace.[break][break]

Perhaps he needs this, too.[break][break]

"It was necessary," he assures her softly, in a tone that suggests genuine belief. "I wouldn't have made it otherwise."[break][break]

She understood Kanto now in a way that outsiders rarely did. Her parents had been slaughtered in their line of work, an act of revenge, and heads had turned in disgust rather than sympathy.[break][break]

She finds her sympathy in him, instead.

So many emotions competed for her attention: shame, grief, anger, sorrow. Gavin did not seem to judge her for it, however. His embrace was reassuring rather than contemptuous; he did not push her away. It reminded her of Isaac Merlo's kindness, but he was the sort of person who gave away pieces of his heart as easily as breathing. She strongly suspected that Gavin did not offer this sort of comfort very often, if ever. Tempest Quinn was the only other person Nomi could think of who likely shared the privilege.[break][break]
After a time, Nomi pulled away. She wiped her eyes on her sleeve, then let out a long, slow breath. Valerian padded over and nosed her affectionately. Idly, she reached down to scratch behind the Sylveon's ears. The landscape around the two Rockets had returned to "normal" (if one could even call the Ultra Deep Sea's unnerving environment "normal"), the dream mist retreating back into the seafloor crack it had originally begun pouring out of as if satiated. Scattered about, Tera crystals winked at them with sharp, glittering edges.[break][break]
"All my life, I searched for answers. Perhaps it is true what they say about ignorance: that it's bliss. But I am too curious a person to shy away from harsh truths. All the same, I should have asked you much sooner what happened to them. It is my fault that we both had to...see that."[break][break]

"Had it not been this, it would have pulled from another memory." Though he keeps his composure, there is a certain tightness to his voice that suggests he's speaking from prior experience. "It would find no shortage."[break][break]

What mattered was that he trusted her - with knowledge, with his experiences, with his demons.[break][break]
A sudden determination came over her, momentarily pushing aside the grief that had continued to threaten her resolve. She straightened and wiped the tears from her cheeks.[break][break]
"I won't disappoint you," she declared. "Perhaps your Kanto counterparts judged my parents too harshly. But I'm not them, and I won't make their same mistakes."[break][break]
Her crimson eyes were hard now. Surely we can do better than Kanto. She was no fool - no longer the naive, lonely little girl from Johto. She knew that lives would inevitably be sacrificed for Rocket's agenda in Hoenn. But the difference between Nomi and her parents, between Gavin and the Kanto Underbosses, was that they would make sure it meant something. Scientific discovery ... stopping the DRK Triad ... improving upon a society the League was far too slow to advance ... if there was going to be blood on their hands, then she wanted it to matter.[break][break]
And, deeper down, she wanted Gavin to be proud of her.
