Caleb stumbled, falling to his knees in the dirt. Sediment kicked up around him and he coughed, grasping his ribs in pain. He fumbled for a Pokeball; but it slipped from his blood-stained fingers, rolling until it stopped against a nearby Tera crystal jutting out of the ground. There was a rushing in his ears, the panic of what he had done settling in.[break][break]
Zev will be fine. His Hatterene will go for help. He's survived worse. It wasn't a killing blow.[break][break]
Were these thoughts supposed to comfort him? He grit his teeth, his own aches and pains from the fight fading as a raw, unfiltered, raging anguish filled him. An involuntary growl of frustration escaped his lips, and he slumped over on the ground: defeated.[break][break]
How had it come to this? Zev was supposed to have stayed in Kanto. Hoenn was a chance to start over, be a better person. Instead, Caleb had resorted to old ways, old skills, old violence. All because Zev couldn't stay away.[break][break]
Zev was a poison. Caleb couldn't stand his brother's arrogance: his insistence that he knew what was best for Caleb. Instead, he always forced Caleb back into someone the Ranger hated: a dangerous man from a past he wanted to forget.[break][break]
Pinkish-purple mist curled around Caleb's sagging form, though he did not notice it. The world around him began to distort unbeknownst to him. The landscape reflected back not a murky ocean floor, but a small town with a distinct lavender hue, its own spectral mist seeping out of a large, ominous tower.

Not all those who wander are lost, someone vaguely notable once said. Only Angelo was, in fact, lost.

His body aches, clothes sticking to his skin in a combination of salt water and sweat. Ocean brine making cuts sing, remnants of his battles out at sea.

He'd been dragged into the realm in a whirlwind of a battle and by the time he'd sent his opponent packing, mist had begun to descend. Whatever methods of orienteering Angelo gravitates to now useless.

There is no direction here, not in the disorientating, strange world swirling in the fog he can't place.

“See if you can find a way out,” he orders Zulu 2, sending the Dragapult away through the maze of unfamiliar buildings that begin to form like watercolours in a jar.

It's suddenly becomes unsettlingly quiet.

Walking alone, Angelo comes to stand beneath the looming shadow of a tower, leaking mist like blood oozing from an open wound.

Nothing good waits for you in there, whispers some sensible part of himself, before he ignores it and heads towards the doors, anyway.

Caleb groaned as the mist thickened. Around him, voices murmured, incomprehensible at first but then...[break][break]
"Shut UP, Caleb! Can't you be quiet for once?"[break][break]
Two children, one slightly older than the other. Black hair, blue eyes, features so similar they could be brothers.[break][break]
"Zev?" Caleb choked out, looking up. The younger Zev had a long-suffering look to his eyes. Far crueler than any child's should be. He grabbed a fistful of the other child's shirt, pulled him close.[break][break]
"You're always talking when I'm trying to read," the child Zev growled. The sound distorted, echoing the voice of the adult Zev Caleb had just fought. "You never listen to me."[break][break]
Caleb's eyes widened. The boy being yelled at was him. This was a scene out of their childhood? But had Zev ever been that threatening to him when they were kids...? He struggled to remember, the dream mist clouding his memory.[break][break]
He tried to scoot back across the dirt, but the scenery simply followed him. The tower transformed into a burning cityscape, buildings collapsing as civilians ran for their lives, stumbling over debris. Caleb knew the city instantly: Saffron. On the day the takeover had begun in earnest.[break][break]
"Why are you showing me this?" He demanded of the mist, heart hammering.[break][break]
Behind him, the sound of approaching feet.

He'd had some experience wandering within this type of mist, back when he'd attended the soiree at Mossdeep. Knew how it could shape places where footsteps had trodden, shift into dreams buried deep and cradled on the surface both - willingly or not.

But this world, crafted of ever shifting mist that Angelo walks through, is as foreign to him as the streets it displays.

There's a feeling that he's stumbled into the wrong movie as the tower drifts away and the realm transforms into a new scene, as if he's interrupting half way through.

Screaming civilians run down the street, dreamscape glowing with the imagery of fire as explosions pop like out of control fireworks within the concrete jungle heights.

Only there's no heat that accompanies the flames and the world doesn't tremor from each detonation. People phase through him like cloud drifting past his plane.

Somehow it makes the realm even more unsettling.

And it makes the shout crisper.

Brow pinched, Angelo jogs over and finally stumbles upon something of familiarity, haggard and hunched on the ground.

“Caleb? The hell are you doin' here?”

He half expects the hand placed on the man's shoulder to phase through like cloud...

On instinct, Caleb flinched away from the hand that touched him, heart hammering. Had Zev been healed that quickly, and was now back for more? But the voice that cut through the sounds of burning buildings and screams of panic around him was not Zev's voice. It was familiar, though. Someone he knew.[break][break]
"Angelo?" He asked, incredulous. He stared up at the pilot, the other man's usually kindly eyes now filled with an unsettled concern. How had Angelo found him? Is he here to help the League? The fact that Caleb was actually supposed to be doing something down here in the Ultra Deep Sea began to resurface. Find Seal Stones. Stop Rocket.[break][break]
The scenery began to change for a third time. Saffron's demise replaced by a dim, militaristic holding chamber. Not quite a prison cell, but the thing that came before one - the thing that determined if you'd need one. Caleb knew that room all too well.[break][break]
"Angelo, you need to get out of here," Caleb pleaded. If his friend saw any more of this - saw what was inevitably coming - Caleb was not sure he could bear the consequences. He had only just begun to win back Orion Lykos as a friend.[break][break]
Zev's voice again, this time in his mind: a recent memory. A recent reminder.[break][break]
"Friends? Mentors? And exactly how do you know you're not one wrong move away from losing them all?"[break][break]

Caleb flinches away when his palm presses against his shoulder, eyes blown out like a startled, wounded pokémon. He's not blind to the red that stains his skin and clothes. Seems the Rangers had been drafted into the territorial dispute between Team Rocket, also.

But why was Caleb out here? Did he get lost during the fighting? Licking his wounds where he couldn't be found, perhaps?

Angelo pulls his hand back slowly but doesn't create distance, feet firmly planted. What surprise had flickered across his face settles into carefully practiced composure.

“What do you think I'm trying to do, buddy?”

Around them the scenery begins to change and so does Caleb's expression, something desperate in his eyes. Darkness ripples, confining. He doesn't let the twist of claustrophobia in his gut show, even if Angelo's feet itch to move.

Come on, Caleb. Don't you dare freak out on me.

“But you've got to leave, too. This place makes the Deep Sea trenches look inviting.” With a small curl of his lips in an attempt to ease tension, Angelo then reaches his hand out again. Attempting to firmly take hold of his arm and help Caleb to stand. “Can you walk?”

Despite it all, his ears perk at the words echoing around the chamber.

Caleb registered the urgency and concern in Angelo's voice, but the words seemed to pass right through him. The other man was determined, however; though Caleb had not thought himself capable of standing, Angelo helped him do so. Shakily, he got to his feet, leaning on Angelo for support. His blue eyes were wild with fear, however: the scene from his past was still playing out in front of them, and Caleb had no idea how to stop it.[break][break]
"On your knees, Harcourt." A harsh voice, full of domineering command. A man was thrown to the ground, during which he stumbled and fell to one knee, then the other.[break][break]
Caleb froze. This was not the memory he'd feared was coming: it was a different one, an unexpected - if no less violent - one. He'd thought it would be the one where he had been forced to torture the Kanto Resistance members, his last act as a Rocket...but this was before that. This was during the takeover, after he'd fucked up a mission involving the assassination of a Celadon politician because the man's toddlers had been with him during the hit. Caleb had refused to kill him in cold blood in front of his children. Of course, someone else had finished the job later. It might even have been Zev.[break][break]
"Your weakness is a detriment to the cause, Harcourt. Rocket does not tolerate weakness." The Rocket admin slapped the younger version of Caleb - the kneeling man - so hard blood spewed from his nose. A single spotlight shown down from one central light, casting long shadows in an otherwise dim room. Around the admin and Caleb stood several other Rocket higher-ups. Zev, too, was in that crowd.[break][break]
His brother had done nothing to intervene when the real beating began.[break][break]
"Angelo, I -- " Caleb stammered, stomach sick with shame. "I was going to tell you, I swear."[break][break]
He braced himself for Angelo's disgust. He wouldn't even blame him, and certainly wouldn't stop him if he wished to leave Caleb to his misery, as the nightmarish memories of his time in Kanto played out like some horrific, twisted highlight reel.

Uncertain whether Caleb is trembling from fatigue, fear or both, Angelo finds his penchant for mischief and trouble worn thin in the mist.

“Caleb?”

Silence is met by the pilot taking matters into his own hands. Looping the ranger's arm over his broad shoulders to steady his already leaning frame, Angelo gives him an encouraging push on the back to move.

Only to be met with a frozen man. Dead weight.

His curse is swallowed only by the unfamiliar bite of another voice, emerging from the mist. Two pairs of blue eyes now pulled into the scene that begins to unfold, only one watching for the second time.

There's little context to what Angelo sees but what he is shown, is enough for him to slot the pieces together. That Caleb Harcourt had been a member of rocket.

His brow creases in confusion, as if trying to figure out a complex math formula. Because honestly? Angelo wouldn't have ever put money down on this reveal of the cards.

But then his memory flickers to Rowan Wrynn and his torn confessions in the burned tower. On the shame that had followed this kid from Hoenn all the way to Johto, for the things that he had done under Rocket's symbol. The resolve...

It's the now that matters.

His patience snaps when the gathering of other rocket members watch unflinching, as their own's blood is spilled...

“Caleb.” His voice barks, shrugging said ranger's arm back firmly into place. It may as well have been a snap of the fingers in front of his nose. “You don't need to tell me any shit you don't want to.”

Instead he brings them to his mouth to let out a sharp whistle, blast sharp enough for Zulu to cry back through the dreamscape in response.

“I'll listen later if you want but what you do need to do for me right now, is start walking.”

Blue eyes look at Caleb, firm. There's little space in Angelo to give right now, not when the dangers of the interdream zone lurk. Not when he's needed back out there.

“It's fine, man,” is the least he could reassure him.

It's fine, man.[break][break]
Caleb blinked. Angelo's voice was firm, edged with frustration and a complete breakdown of patience, but it was also kind. Reassuring. And most of all: it lacked the disgust Caleb had feared.[break][break]
It was Angelo's acceptance that finally jolted Caleb out of the waking nightmare he had been trapped in, the Rocket interrogation room and his younger, bloodied self scattering back into particles of pink and purple mist. The Ultra Deep Sea loomed around them, the same as it had been before the dream mist had begun to warp Caleb's memories into something solid and dangerous.[break][break]
"Thank you," he croaked, throat dry. His chest ached with bruises, but also with gratitude for his friend. He straightened his body and finally allowed Angelo to begin leading them both away from the source of the dream mist. "I got stuck in the dream mist after..."[break][break]
Somehow the recent fight with his brother seemed like both a distant and a fresh memory all at once. You don't need to tell me any shit you don't want to, Angelo had insisted. Caleb let out a long, shaky breath. He didn't need to explain what had happened with Zev, didn't need to reveal his brother's identity as a member of Hoenn Rocket. Maybe in time, he'd be able to tell Angelo everything, but not now. Now, they had to get out.[break][break]
"...after I fought one of the Rockets down here. He did a number on me, but I also gave him hell." A small, wry smile. A little bit of the Caleb Angelo was used to.

Finally, steps are taken.

Awkward, unsure ones but they begin to leave the memories of Caleb Harcourt's past behind in the mist. Fog thinning, becoming less heavy, with each footfall.

It's gone near completely by the time the ranger has composed himself, and Angelo finds himself internally relieved for it. Both that they're finally getting out of the problematic fog and that he didn't have to switch Caleb's lights out to do so.

For a moment, Angelo had considered it. The interdream mist had had a feast with his trauma, no wonder it had resisted letting go.

That he was leading Caleb right back into the fray, to bloody his hands further for a different cause, doesn't bring the pilot hesitation.

Be it may that those he knew had flown the banner of rocket in the past didn't deter his friendship, but he wouldn't see them win now.

Hoenn was theirs.

“Think you've got enough in you to raise some more hell?” His lips split and a throaty chuckle emerges, like the fog had lingered there too long. “They're gonna need that, out there.”

Swooping through the last wisps of dream, Zulu returns back to him. An arrow that would lead them right back into the clash of forces, of which he'd cast his bets.
