to her, feels easier said than done. point a to point be always sounds easy to her. the inbetween though, the unknown? that's what makes her skin crawl with goosebumps. wanderlust sweeps into her chest and rushes her heartbeat.[break][break]

"I'm good," Caleb replied, double checking the straps securing their shipment to Lyra's back. The Lapras was big enough to carry all of it - rations, medical supplies, scatterbangs and other weaponry - and would be able to glide effortlessly through the Ultra Deep Sea's strange water-like environment. They just needed to get it to one of the primary League outposts that had been established just inside the rift. Should be a fairly straightforward mission.[break][break]
Assuming Rocket didn't try and interfere.[break][break]
"Is this your first time going into the Ultra Deep Sea?" Caleb asked his partner, a Ranger named francie myrtle who he'd never worked with before. She seemed competent and capable, though, and most importantly, she was cute. He'd silently praised his good luck when she'd shown up to their assigned meeting place.[break][break]
Beside him, Lyra trilled confidently, ready to get going.

truthfully she should have introduced herself. the excitement of everything made introductions slip her mind completely though. but his asking if this is her first time reminds her that introductions aren't usually necessary when you're told your assigned partner before you head out.[break][break]

a pale hand moves behind her head of blonde hair as she sheepishly cheeses when asked if this is her first time. she scratches the nape of her neck gently.[break][break]

She'd helped out MATIAS SILPH? Of the Elite Four? Seemed she was quite the prolific Ranger after all. Caleb had never met the man, but, like most of Hoenn, he knew of him. Wasn't he on house arrest right now or something, though? It was something Caleb had heard on the news, but the details of which he couldn't quite recall.[break][break]
Francie's vibrant enthusiasm was infectious, and he couldn't help but smile back at her. "To be honest, this is my first time too. I've mostly been assigned to The Border. You been there yet? Creepy place, full of ghosts."[break][break]
Caleb indicated for Lyra to get going, so the Lapras began to head up the rocky path towards the entrance to the Ultra Deep Sea rift. Dewford town was eerily quiet, the mid-afternoon sun hidden behind a haze of grey clouds. Caleb kept a trained eye on their surroundings, looking out for anything suspicious or dangerous along their path as he continued their chat.[break][break]

"oooooh, no i haven't! i'll have to look into it though. who doesn't like gettin' a good spook once in a while, right?"[break][break]

haunted houses were more of an october thing for her, but she still thought it could be fun. rock and ghost dual types weren't a thing yet to be discovered as far as she knew, so she hadn't gone out of her way to hang out with ghost types.[break][break]

shallow of her to an extent, sure. but y'know, that's francie. simple girl.[break][break]

"we'll just have to watch each other's back while we're out here." it being both of their first time didn't bother francie. didn't affect her confidence at all.[break][break]

which showed in how she released her aerodactyl, tilly, and began climbing up the beast's wings and body easily.[break][break]

"tilly and i will keep an eye on your six," she sits backwards on the aerodactyl, tilly following the lapras. "and if we have any ambushes, i'll let ya know!"

And just like that, the little ray of sunshine had hopped up onto an equally eager Aerodactyl and lifted off into the air above Lyra and Caleb. He craned his neck, watching the two grow smaller as they gained altitude. He let out a small laugh, half-bemused half-bolstered by the young woman's positive energy. He patted Lyra's side, encouraging her to get going, then began walking beside her.[break][break]
For a time, the road was quiet - nothing out of the ordinary seemed to be happening. With the lack of conversation - what with Francie being up in the air and all - Caleb's mind began to drift. He wondered if Zev Harcourt was involved in the Ultra Deep Sea conflict; Rocket had been the ones to discover the Seal Stones, after all. If Zev's around, then Isaac will be too, Caleb thought grimly, wishing the younger man would just stay at Howling (and stay safe).[break][break]
"See anything up there?" Caleb called up to Francie, beginning to feel apprehensive about their lack of obstacles. Surely it couldn't be this easy, could it? Unless Rocket was simple preoccupied with something already happening within the Ultra Deep Sea. Maybe two Rangers hauling a box of supplies wasn't worth anyone's trouble...

during the silence that came with her ascent, francie felt herself getting uneasy. it wasn't that she disliked being in the air, or watching somebody's six, or even that she didn't trust caleb. no, francie was uneasy for the very same reason that caleb was.[break][break]

"not that i can tell!" she called back down, frowning. "which honestly i don't like! mind if i send some scouts down to check the area?"[break][break]

she'd be down a few pokémon which is why she'd asked caleb if it would be alright. because it would mean she wouldn't have the luxury of a full team if they got into battle and caleb might have to do most of the heavy lifting.

"Uh, sure," Caleb replied. Scouts could be good, right?[break][break]
The Ranger continued to survey the landscape from ground-level. Wait...what was that? Some kind of buzzing sound...no, more like...whizzing...?[break][break]
An explosion of sound, smoke and debris threw Caleb backwards, and he fell onto the ground with an ungraceful thump. Lyra bellowed in pain and confusion, her forward progress momentarily halted. Caleb rubbed his eyes, ears ringing. Someone had thrown a scatterbang at them. Shit, the Rockets are here, he thought. Their uneventful jaunt had been too good to be true. And unfortunately, Francie's scouts had been sent out a little too late...[break][break]
"Francie!" He called to her, unable to see her or her Aerodactyl due to the haze. "How many can you see from above?"[break][break]
Caleb scrambled to his feet, then pulled out a Pokeball, releasing Umi. "Help defend Lyra and the shipment," he commanded. The Umbreon nodded, then leapt over to the dazed Lapras. Not knowing exactly where their assailants were, she simply gathered up the nearvy shadows and released a DARK PULSE out onto the road ahead.

lyonel and norman had been the two she sent off to scout. just as the scatterbang went off, francie was covering her ears with wide eyes searching the ground, trying to find anybody and anything that she could single out.[break][break]

as she heard caleb call out, she gritted her teeth. she couldn't see a fucking thing and tilly didn't have a move to get the smoke to go away. so naturally, she did the first thing that came to mind.[break][break]

tossing out nicky's ball, the onix came to life within the scatterbang, avoiding the umbreon and the dark pulse that had been sent out. francie let out her azumarill, mary, as well but atop the onix.[break][break]

"nicky keep the cargo safe!" as she spoke, the giant's tail started to glow, an iron tail sweeping at the scatterbang's smoke and anything that was beyond he and the umbreon beside him. "mary, set up!"[break][break]

her trump card, mary, hopped along nicky's rocks until she was safely on the ground. her body started to glow, an aqua ring surrounding her body.[break][break]

nicky's iron tail had cleared a lot of the smoke and francie was finally able to see.[break][break]

"they're grunts! about four of them!"[break][break]

which meant potentially twenty-four pokémon between them; if they had full parties. lifting her fingers up, she pulled her mouth enough to create a loud whistle, which she knew lyonel and norman would hear and come in for back up soon.

Four. That wasn't awful. Sure, they were outnumbered, but they had a chance. In any case, Caleb wasn't willing to give up on their mission just yet.[break][break]
Determined to equalize the fight, he hastily checked his coat pockets - didn't he have something he'd picked up during his last expedition into one of the rifts? ...Yes! He pulled out the Mysterious Ore with a triumphant grin, one of the few tokens he and his companions had been able to recover from the Border.[break][break]
"Umi!" He called to his Umbreon. "Shatter this all over the ground!" He tossed the ore in her direction. The Umbreon swiftly generated another DARK PULSE, aiming it directly at the strange, reddish rock. As the dark energy slammed into it, the ore shattered into thousands of deadly spikes. They littered the pathway, creating DIFFICULT TERRAIN. Now the Rockets and their Pokémon would not be able to close in on them. He heard several angry voices cruse as they realized what had happened.[break][break]
Caleb didn't stop there. Next, he pulled out the Tera crystal attuned to Umi. "And while you're at it, go ahead and give them hell," he grinned at her. She began to glow a bright purple, her fur crystallizing, a crown of amethyst roses forming on her head. She growled, eyes flashing red with GHOST TYPE power, then sent her own powerful CURSE at the Rocket closest to her. Barely able to grab a Pokeball in time, he was thrown violently off his feet into the dirt.[break][break]
"One down!" Caleb called up to Francie.

francie gave a beaming smile, landing with tilly to help catch caleb after the bang. tilly never touches the ground and francie holds up her mega-bracelet. energy surrounds the bracelet as the aerodactyl mega evolves, screeching in triumph and lashing out toward the battle field.[break][break]

"nice one caleb!" francie encourages as her aerodactyl mega evolves and dives towards the rockets with a giga impact from the sky.[break][break]

mary let's out a triumphant yell as she swept her own tail smack into the head of one of the rocket pokémon, sending it tumbling away with her aqua tail. nicky backed her up by burrowing into the ground, the attacks from the pokémon that were trying to take him out missing thanks to his dig.[break][break]

"we'll knock 'em dead." like tilly had a one of the opposing rocket's pokémon.

As it turned out, being outnumbered hardly mattered when you had quick thinking and years of Ranger experience on your side. It also helped that Caleb was well aware of what sorts of tactics Rocket liked to use: after all, he'd been one. Together, the two Rangers were able to defend the shipment strapped the Lyra's back without taking too much damage on their end, pushing the Rockets back into the jungle that surrounded the path.[break][break]
With a final DARK PULSE, which knocked out an opposing Persian, the Terastallized Umi sent the last of the Rockets running. Deftly avoiding the shattered ore he'd scattered across the ground, Caleb made his way to Lyra's side. "Allright, girl?" He asked with a grin. He was breathing heavily, heart pounding from the encounter, but otherwise unharmed. His Lapras trilled confidently: everything was fine.[break][break]
"Great work, Francie!" He called up to her. "Not sure how long it will take them to regroup, so let's get going. I think we're almost there."[break][break]
Sure enough, now that the dust had cleared from the scatterbang, Caleb could see the looming, grey form of Granite Cave in the distance - the entrance to the Ultra Deep Sea rift.
