[attr="class","wownewmain"]it wasn't what he had planned either. he'd wanted to take her to this anomaly of colors, and dreams; to show annalise how he saw her.

but he can't deny how his heart soars.

greyson resists the urge to kiss her, and he finds that even more difficult than the fight against matias. a thought that forces a grimace, one that widens at her question.

hesitantly, he lifts his shirt up to reveal the nearly-healed bruises; blotches of yellow, and black with fist-like indentations. small, iridescent flower petals lay atop his skin like bandaging, still actively treating the wounds.

"he.. goaded me into throwing the first punch," greyson admits, "and.. things escalated."

he allows his shirt to fall, and rolls up a sleeve - the one with his comfey. small white lines, no longer than a pinky finger, trace his skin like old scars. the same leaves present on his abdomen, are present here too.

"turns out he can create explosive rock." who woulda guessed.

her jaw drops, horrified, as the curtain of fabric is lifted and a patchwork of bruises is revealed underneath. she reaches out but stops short of touching his injuries. instead, she compares the size of each splotch to the spread of her fingers, finally finding the anger that had been absent earlier in their conversation. "he's so fucking petty."

he rolls up his sleeve. every hairline scar feels purposeful, meant to be seen by her in the end. like Greyson Connors is the victim of some proxy war between them. she gives in to what he wants, resolves to stop avoiding him in a single moment. [break][break]
"explosive rock ... ? he tried to kill you?"
[break][break]her voice raises with incredulous anger.
[break][break]
"i'm — " she forces herself to soften her voice. "i'm super glad that you're safe. and don't worry about your job."

her face hardens.

"worry about mine instead because i'm going to go fucking kill him myself right now."

her anger reaches a theatrical note. she storms past him towards the direction she assumes he came here from, towards the mist.

he reaches out with his hand, the curling of the mist like a cold breeze on his skin as he grabs her by the arm.

"anna stop!" shapes manifest themselves on the edge of his vision, and the earth rumbles lightly beneath their feet, but he focuses his attention on the one thing that matters here: anna.

"it's done and over with, okay? i gave as good as i got - i promise you that. let him posture, and taunt all he wants. he's just begging for attention."

but he focuses on something she said.

"what, wha- why are you saying he's petty? does he have something over you? is he blackmailing you or something?"

a shadow manifests behind him, a blocky, humanoid creature. to a discerning eye, it looks a lot like MATIAS SILPH would - if he and groudon had fused.

"stop, anna! just stop. i have our entire interaction recorded." greyson doesn't even have time to remove the ball from his belt to show her. "whether or not i threw the first punch doesn't matter, he was clearly trying to use his lies about you, to provocate me. he's already on house-arrest. this is not something he can fight!"

an echo, barely above a whisper, reverberates through the mist. it had the consistency of gravel; rough, coarse, and most of all, in-human.

'did she tell you about that night? about what actually happened?'

she stops, looks over her shoulder back at him. her eyes land on his face first, then flick upwards to the manifestation taking shape behind him. fuck. even in this monstrous form, she knows its him — he's been following her through the mist ever since she'd entered this rift.

Greyson Connors 's explanation falls on deaf ears. her thoughts turn to static, then her mind fills with loud, unintelligible chatter like they're in a crowded room. she thinks she can make out her own voice compounding her guilt in replayed conversations with MATIAS SILPH , Rory Faust , and Greyson Connors .[break][break]
telling matias she won't tell greyson. [break][break]begging rory not to tell greyson. [break][break]lying to greyson, to his face.
[break][break]the not-quite-matias standing behind greyson, asking if she ever told him about what happened.

it's all too much.

the confession sounds uncomfortably loud in her ears as the cacophony falls silent. she sucks in a shaky breath, but it isn't clear if she's talking to Greyson Connors or not.[break][break]

"wh- what?" the visage that silhouettes him widens into atoothy grin, a red light pulsating from within'. it laughs, carrying all the ego and arrogance of its original.

"he kissed you?" the mist around them trembles, and the apparition of MATIAS SILPH gains even more definition.

"what happened? and, the truth this time, annalise."

[break][break]"fine," she concedes, the fire extinguished from her voice.[break][break]"we were hanging out and he asked me to stay over until kyle lopez came over to keep him company and i said sure or whatever. and then out of nowhere he told me he cheated on eva — " with penny, she almost says, but instead stumbles over that and onto the next point, the truth unraveling with the occasional tremble of anxiety in her voice. " — and we argued about it. like, pretty bad. and i told him i was leaving but he wouldn't let me open the door."[break][break]
she starts to fidget, picking at her cuticles with trembling fingers. no matter where she averts her gaze, that interdream matias seems to always haunt her peripheral.

"i'm not going to say no to a fucking avatar, so i just dropped the whole thing and went to sit on his couch because he kept saying i only had to stay until, like, kyle showed up. and then he sat on the couch next to me and ... "

her lips press thinly together, just long enough for her to swallow the old anger and hurt back down.

[attr="class","wownewmain"]he listens intently, attention fixated on one of the nearby jagged rocked. greyson barely blinks; he hardly even stirs.

when her tale is finished, there's only silence that greets her. greyson's body trembles, and the shadow of the avatar behind him feeds on... whatever emotion, or far-off thoughts it could can get a hold of. it rises, towering over both of them, until it's nearly equal to groudon's own height.

the apparition gains more mass, more definition, and even the air around them begins to fill with a stifling heat.

"why..."

a small, nearly unnoticeable crack begins to split down the center of shadow!matias's chest. it spreads quickly, widening to reveal a pulsing pink-and-white light. the sensation alarms the nightmare, but greyson doesn't seem to notice.

"why didn't you tell me?"

the pink-and-white light widens to the point where it's a fissure in the ghost's skin. warmth and comfort slip from that crack, and it quickly works to overwhelm the heat, and seal the wounded cracks of to their mental fortresses. shadow!matias looks to annalise henderson in desperation, drilling its mist further, looking for anything it can to latch onto once again.

all the while, clarity begins to fill greyson. along with it was an anger; a deep, pulsating vein of untapped hatred. it clashes with the SAFEGUARD that his comfey has put in place, and only through sheet intent alone does greyson reign it in.

he's too ashamed to meet her gaze, his own violets tainted with the shadows of guilt, and worry.

"i'm sorry, anna. i should've been there for you." he approaches her again, but doesn't reach out. part of him is afraid she'd reject his touch again. "you've been keeping that to yourself this entire time. that must've been.. hard."

only then does he dare look up to face her.

"are you okay? is there anything i can do for you?"

but by the time the lie left her lips, it'd already been too late. MATIAS SILPH had administered the first blow but she realizes now, with a sinking feeling, that she had dealt the second. she looks past him and meets eyes with the figure towering over him. she watches the mending light burn through his core, sees the desperation in his face. in the end, he remains, the mist finding purchase as it bleeds across the cave floor. [break][break]
"don't be sorry, greyson," she tells him, a ghost of a smile of her face. she wants to reach out for him — hold his hand, hug him, something — but the distance between them feels so much like the kindness she had tried to afford him by lying. "you didn't know. i should've told you when it happened."

he asks her what he can do for her and the other shoe finally drops.[break][break]
"i want you to go back to ollie and penny. i have to talk to matias and — "
