he only realizes when it gets called out.

"i guess it's just kind of, uh, fits?" he shrugs. "he does kind of act like a dog though, am i wrong?"

it's probably okay to mention it since all he would get from matias is a tch if he does manage to hear it. it's not the worst reaction, given the outbursts he's seen from him before.

"i'm not sure if it works though. this is the first time i did it, i think."

he probably did it subconsciously before too, but he doesn't have any recollection of it.

he stops when annalise points out the obvious. this matias has an actual outfit. the matias he knew would never a suit and tie, and most importantly, dress shoes.

"well, no," he answers her.

as he tries to intercept him, he felt a little heartbroken when his attention shifts to the ranger instead. kyle stands dumbfounded as the matias before them goes straight to her, quickly invading her personal bubble at the first chance he gets.

"are you, like, this close?" he asks her.

"hey," he calls him only to flinch when he hears the iconic click of his tongue.

the response stops kyle in his tracks, freezing momentarily as he processes that reaction in his head. in the moment of kyle's confusion, this matias peeks over his shoulder to catch annalise's eyes.

matias finally takes notice of kyle when annalise mentions him. he takes one glance at him, still donning the puppy dog eyes he shows everyone.

"how's your dog cafe, kyle? i hope it is to your liking."

"huh?"

he hasn't had a dog cafe, nor did he say anything similar to it to matias any time before. it only serves to confuse him even more as matias turns back to annalise, eyes focusing only on hers.

kyle is quickly ignored, continuing the conversation as if the little skit did not happen.

"i'm here for you, annalise. you're special to me."

"please. we do have something to talk about."

does he even have the vibes of a cafe owner? probably. he does seem pretty docile when put beside his other colleagues within the league.

popcorn appears on kyle's hands, a gift given to him by the interdream zone, when annalise finally gives matias the time of her day.

"i've started an organization that overtook hoenn. we finally got rocket out with it."

"i want you to run it with me."

kyle takes a handful of popcorn, realizing that maybe ho-oh can just revive him in the case he does die from food poisoning. surprisingly, the popcorn tastes normal.

this matias shakes his head as if what he's been saying was common sense. he ends with a heavy sigh, and then faces annalise with a condescending look of pity.

kyle steps out of the conversation, just because he's more curious about the development of the exchange.

"team flare? we literally own hoenn?"

he gives another sigh as a sign of arrogance. kyle could tell that he's thinking lowly of annalise for not knowing of it, but he shuts his mouth and lets her react to it on her own instead.

"please don't tell me you're as dumb as those idiots that you lost common sense. i don't want to deal with another penelope or another ollie. arceus forbid you're an aaron too."

matias pulls out a pokeball, almost brandishing it in front of annalise. kyle tenses, and gets ready to pull out his own.

"you're with me or against me, annalise."

shit.

that's the trigger for matias once he already bared his fangs. the slightest rebuff against him would trigger him immediately. as soon as the next word comes out of matias' mouth, kyle readies his pokemon.

"tch."

kyle takes out his mightyena immediately, terastallization occurring right away. a crown indicating it's flying-typing is worn over its head, as it fires off its tera blast.

his groundon appears at the same time, its large hand backhanding the mightyena in the air and throwing it to the ground.

a feminine voice cuts through the violence immediately. kyle recognizes it, but her figure hasn't appeared yet amid the mists of the interdream zone.

"matias?"
