what does manifest is something sharp in their pockets. kyle sticks his hand the moment he felt something jab his thigh, and upon taking it out, finds a z-crystal.

he doesn't need it since his pokemon can already innately use one, but it would be a waste not to use it. he crushes it, and activates the sequences for the z-move.

MIGHTYENA: MIGHTY MAUL
DARK-TYPE
mightyena sends spectral fangs to drag the target underground for THREE TURNS. the target is immobilized, unable to switch out or move.

the mightyena targets the fake PENELOPE LIVY. the classic button-up she'd always donned had been ravaged and left hanging open, granting a window to the black lace that lay inside.

kyle doesn't feel remorse since it seemed like an illusion at that time. this matias, on the other hand, feels hatred at what the mightyena has done to his beloved.

"why are you such a fucking pest?"

"stay the fuck away from her."

precipice blades quickly shoot out of the ground, only to miss the mightyena because of the balloons on its crown lifting it up the ground. kyle tilts his head as the reaction bewilders him.

"this version of them is so, like, weird, right?" she comments, though she's half-convinced matias would defend penny like this in the real world, too. her fingers curl into her palm, crushing her z-crystal into glittering dust.

"yeah," kyle chuckles, amused by the situation. "they're kind of funny though."

the groudon tries to get out of the whirlpool, and in frustration, fires off a stray ancient power directed to the milotic. disoriented by the vortex, it flies towards the mightyena instead, knocking it down to the ground, and knocking it out.

"do you think he'll do a monologue when i throw this at him?"

before he gets an input from annalise, he throws the bucket of popcorn he got straight at matias, all while his groudon was left unable to react properly by the milotic's move.

"are you envious of me, lopez? do you think you're better than me?"

"just because you're a champion doesn't mean anything. i know you fear me."

"get your grudge out while you can. your hatred means you're below me."

the swirling hydro vortex spits out an ancient power that careens through the air and strikes kyle lopez 's mightyena, knocking it out. instead of calling out a new pokemon, the champion decides to instigate further with his own two hands.

annalise opens her mouth, ready to tell him that no, let's not do that, but the bucket of popcorn is spiraling through the air before the breath can even reach the top of her throat. she watches it like one watches a train wreck, popcorn raining down from the bucket in slow motion as it comes in contact with matias.

and just as kyle anticipated, the monologuing begins in earnest as the bucket hits the ground. his words are scathing, but it's hard to take the venom in his voice seriously with the dusting of popcorn in his hair and on his bright red suit.

he tries to imagine something to be thrown, but nothing appears before him. instead, he takes his pouch of supplies on his belt and looks for items to be thrown.

"how about this?" he shows a sticky glob to annalise. "you handle the groudon, and i'll handle matias."

it's a fair division of labor that kyle pretty much supports. he has the strengths of being a good thrower. his aim is pretty good too, given that he has won his fair share of carnival games.

like a celebrity getting egged, matias stands still as the sticky glob encases him, all while penny is still being ravaged by his mightyena's z-move. maybe she'll disappear if they stop thinking about her.

"is this it, lopez? is this all you can do?"

"you're a fucking weakling! hit me with the best of what you got!"

"and leaving connors' girl to do the fighting for you? pathetic."

kyle doesn't listen since he's looking for more things to throw at matias.

no more popcorn appears, but kyle lopez rummages through his bag and improvises with the sticky glob he holds up for her to see. she nods approvingly, biting her bottom lip to suppress the laugh that rises in her throat at the thought of him throwing it. [break][break]"yeah, sure! i got it."[break][break]
her role in this battle is a lot less fun (and a lot more harrowing) but she thinks she can handle it. groudon staggers from her milotic's water pulse, but it makes its advance on the water-type with an earthquake that makes annalise stumble sideways on the suddenly unstable ground.

a jagged fissure opens up in the cavern floor. a hand reaches up and out, patting the ground for purchase. penny crawls out of the earthen wound, as unsettlingly determined as a horror movie antagonist.

"leave him the fuck alone!" her blaziken launches into action with its trainer's reappearance, crossing the battlefield with a speed boost to strike at kyle lopez with its claws. [break][break]annalise commands her milotic to stop it, but a hammer arm from the encroaching groudon sends the serpent into the nearest wall.

"fuck."

he'd gotten too complacent. he releases a pokemon to defend against the blaziken, mega evolving the said pokemon on the first possible chance. with the mega venusaur between him and the councilwoman's pokemon, kyle issues a defensive move.

"sleep powder!"

with the grass-type on the way, the blaziken now finds itself in close proximity to the cloud of pollen the pokemon releases. it falls asleep, but even kyle knows that it's only temporary.

"scout a way out!"

he releases another pokemon out, leading the charge with tailwind. it doesn't last long though, as matias takes out an earth spike and has it shoot down the bird, skewering it to its death.

"we're just starting. don't go too soon."

"i'm sorry that we got off on the wrong foot."

"i promise i'll do better and make it worth your while. both of you are important to me. please."

a gasp catches in her throat as a venusaur mega-evolves in the space between kyle lopez and the oncoming blaziken, stopping the fighting-type in its tracks with a haze of sleep powder. her own milotic shifts out from under rock and dust with a lash of her tail, materializing an aqua ring around herself to mend the parts of her body where her scales have been shorn away to reveal oozing wounds beneath. "let's go!" annalise calls out to her pokemon, happily standing behind the champion's decision to get the fuck out of here. she goes towards kyle, but skitters to a stop as his pidgey is skewered. her hand claps over her mouth to stifle her horror, but it still comes out muffled between her fingers.

her milotic uses another surf to sweep their interdream enemies away, ignoring both of team flare's attempts to get them to stay. the sound of water surging prompts annalise to move her feet again. she reaches for kyle's arm, urging him away with one hand and reaching for a poke ball with another.

he recalls his venusaur, who won't be able to catch up with them anyways, and follows annalise and her meowstic out of the realm.

"hah! run away cowards! i knew you can't handle me."

they did not get chased. instead, kyle hears something else distract matias. a new character for the story, it takes him a while to recognize the voice of the other person until matias drops her name.

oh, who do we have here? florist, you know you're the only one for me.

"i'll prove it right here, right now."

he can hear a few aggressive advances from the elite four, and then a cracking sound of a crisp slap, followed by affirming sounds from matias. it makes kyle wonder if the interdream penelope was watching all of these or if she got replaced entirely.

"i wanna watch it, but i feel like this is the best chance to get out."

behind them, her milotic screams as precipice blades thrust up through the ground, a parting gift from matias and his patron. a second glance over her shoulder shows the serpent going limp on the stones, making her heart leap into her throat. she reaches for her pokeball and feels an overwhelming wave of relief wash over her as the light withdraws her pokemon.

annalise can hear matias talking to another unfamiliar voice as they move through the mist, but she doesn't share kyle lopez 's curiosity — not even the ring of a distant slap is enough to slow her pace.

"yeaaah," she sighs out, trying to sound sympathetic to the champion's desire to watch whatever beatdown the interdream mist is formulating behind them. "we should just keep moving."

her meowstic finds the perimeter and pops out of it, ridding herself of the interdream mist clinging to her fur with a head-to-tail shake. annalise follows after, thankful to be back in the regular ultra sea, as ironic as it feels.

"thank god," is all she can think to say. she turns to regard kyle, giving him a concerned once-over. "are you okay? that battle was super chaotic."

it was a lot to unpack, whether it's a work of fiction or not.

the ultra deep sea was much more welcome compared to what they experienced. the breath of murky, dank cave air was more appreciated than the fluffy, comfy dream mist atmosphere if they had to experience that.

as he catches his breath, he looks back. "do you think they'll get out of the interdream zone eventually?"

he smashes a mysterious ore, allowing the cave walls to grow and creating a barricade between where they stand and where the interdream zone stays. regardless of the truth, at least they have the security that they won't get chased for a while.

kyle turns back to annalise as she asks him.

"only if i happen on him by chance," he answers her, but he follows it up with a question of his own. "does he actually talk like that, or was that just a dream mist thing?"

kyle lopez breaks a mysterious ore, creating a wall between themselves and the mist they'd escaped from. it's her first time seeing one in action and surprise lingers on her face even as he turns back to answer her question.

"oh," she says with a lilt in her voice that almost seems questioning. she honestly expected more urgency in his answer considering they ended up in that situation because he insisted on following matias' voice, so she's a little taken aback by how nonchalant he sounds now.[break][break]
"it was the dream mist for sure."

some of the stuff he said when he first appeared sounded like him, but she genuinely believes everything else was interdream weirdness since she's never heard of team flare or seen him wear a stupid red suit. [break][break]
static comes to life in her earpiece and a voice speaks loud enough to be heard at an indistinct mumble from where kyle is standing.

"oh — i'm being requested to help move some supplies around."

chased away from their objective and forced to backtrack, he's not even sure if he could find him at this point.

"yeah, i hope so too."

a lawless land such as ultra space was no place for his charge to be wandering around without their parole officer, especially when the ankle monitor doesn't work. unfortunately, priorities exist.

matias wasn't the only thing he should be worrying about. beyond that and the hunt, there were other places that needed to be attended to. if someone with the experience of being a head ranger was told to do supplies, kyle is certain it'll only be a matter of time before people are asked to switch up their responsibilities to other areas.

he waves goodbye to annalise as they part ways. he's not sure if it's an excuse not to get near matias or not, but he's not going to question it. "have a nice, uh, rest of the day!"
