NIGHT DOES NOT COME EASY ON HOENN’S WARFRONT. for every lost soul that roams these desolate caves, so too does conflict arise. like the rocket pokemon that once called hit place their home, battles wade through the broken foundations of collapsed tunnels.

in the end, there are no winners. no treasures to be found. no glory to be seized. just destruction at the hands of those who think they have more to lose.

fernando slumbers quietly against a backdrop of several wooden crates. his hand clutches onto a pokeball and another object. even unconscious, he remains wary.

the lingering injuries of mint frost’s booby trap have dried into brittle scabs. dark red lines draw the trails of tears unshed. a battered body forces him to rest as his spirit remains undaunted. even the slightest noise is set to rouse him from his slumber.

a survivalist by the very definition of the word.

Nomi was tired.[break][break]
She trudged along, flanked by Valerian and Oleander, her backpack full of Tera crystals she'd dug out of the seafloor, paranoia eating at her with every step. She kept looking over her shoulder, wondering if she was being followed. This place was oppressive. She knew as well as any that it wasn't exactly healthy to remain in the Ultra Deep Sea for too long.[break][break]
But Rocket had Seal Stones to find, and so the war continued. Where were those elusive treasures? As far as she knew, nobody had found any yet. Maybe this whole thing would be for nothing. Blood and sweat and spent resources...wasted.[break][break]
No, not nothing. We have more data on the dream mist. On the Paradox Pokémon.[break][break]
That had to count for something, right?[break][break]
Valerian growled softly. Nomi stopped, shaken from her reverie. The Sylveon was staring ahead at something on the ground. Droplets of dark red liquid. Dried blood? Oleander sniffed, the Oranguru also noticing the strange stains. Nomi stiffened. Was someone nearby? If they were hurt, perhaps she could either sneak by or get the jump on them...[break][break]
Memories of the injured GIDEON GRAVES and his desperation to defend himself surfaced; she did not want to repeat such an encounter if she could help it.

THE POKEMON’S LOW SNARL IS ENOUGH TO KILL HIS REST. a wary eye narrows, reaching for a pokeball before he even recognizes his surroundings. the feeling of hard wood against his backside is reminder enough that he’s behind some cover. his mouth closes, default to holding his breath as he settles into utter silence.

only the sub-human sound of his blood dripping from reopening wounds slip through the cavern’s bemoaning murmurs.

Nomi crept forward.[break][break]
The drip...drip...drip of liquid hitting the seafloor was unnerving. Someone was definitely bleeding nearby. Were they foe or friend, however? That was the question.[break][break]
"Who's there?" Nomi called out, deciding to be bold. Her Pokémon readied themselves for a fight, a palpable tension in the air. She rounded a corner, several wooden crates in her way. Breathing. More dripping.[break][break]
Someone was definitely here. Nomi glanced down at Valerian; the Sylveon met her gaze with his own cotton-candy stare. She gently set down her bag, the Tera crystals clinking softly within. Oleander activated a PSYCHIC TERRAIN around them, and Valerian put up a LIGHT SCREEN, a shimmering barrier around Nomi. Feeling sufficiently protected, Nomi waited to see if anyone would emerge from behind the crates.

there are two choices here: strike first or diplomacy.

so far, diplomacy hasn’t done shit for him. his encounter with genesis aria fox? a one-sided victory for her on the grounds of him already being injured from a gauntlet of rocket’s finest. the same could be said here.

should whoever this is really want peace, they could just move on. disregard and mind their business. fernando has little hope that whoever is behind his cover is some bleeding heart. not when the PSYCHIC TERRAIN start to coil around him.

his pokeball activates! an AMBIPOM appears above the crate, hurling several items its PICKED UP. POISON BARBS, SCATTER BANGS, STICKY BLOBS? the pokemon cares little for what ammo it has. it just knows to empty the crate by any means necessary.

and to do so painfully.

The eerie silence was broken by a sudden explosion of sound and activity. Objects came hurtling at Nomi and her Pokémon so quickly, they barely had time to react. A SCATTERBANG hit the ground by Nomi's feet with a deafening burst of sound and smoke, throwing the young scientist violently backwards onto the seafloor. POISON BARBS flew through the air next; Valerian was able to dodge them, but one grazed Nomi's arm. She yelped in pain, the wound shallow but burning from the toxins. The STICKY GLOB hit Oleander, locking him in place, which caused the Oranguru to screech angrily. Within a matter of seconds, the tides had turned significantly, and not in Nomi's favor.[break][break]
Valerian howled with rage as he noticed Nomi's bleeding arm. "I'm allright," she assured him weakly. She was beginning to lose feeling in her arm. Attempting to remain calm, she took several deep breaths to try and steady herself.[break][break]
Valerian did not wait for orders. In defense of Nomi, he leapt at the Ambipom, sending a powerful PSYCHIC blast - super-charged by the PSYCHIC TERRAIN - right at it.

THE MOMENT THE SCATTER BANG ACTIVATES, fernando makes a clear run for it. one leg gives under another while driblets of blood mark his escape path. he can barely hear himself breath due to his ears still ringing from the blast.

his AMBIPOM is not as lucky. the pokemon has no qualms with acting out, relishing in its NASTY PLOT. the only issue is that there are too many opponents. these random weapons worked will on nomi and her ORANGURU but that doesn’t quite deem true for her SYLVEON.

the PSYCHIC blast knocks him clear off the crate and onto the floor where fernando once was. it steadies itself with its split tail before sneaking behind the crates in an attempt to get closer.

behind it, fernando unleashes another pokemon. one that causes the whole cavern the tremble as it burrows underground.

Nomi thought she saw a...person running away from the crates? The figure collapsed, however, mere feet from where they had originally manifested. The young scientist's head and arm throbbed, the effects of the POISON BARB making it harder and harder for her to think straight. Perhaps she had not seen anyone, after all. Perhaps her mind was just playing tricks on her. Perhaps the dream mist was back with a vengeance, ready to drag her through some fresh new cognitive hell...[break][break]
Valerian did not relent. He chased after the Ambipom with vicious resolve: injuring Nomi was the gravest sin a person or Pokémon could commit. With a shimmer of power - the Tera Orb attached to Nomi's waist beginning to glow - the Sylveon's body transformed into an obsidian and onyx crystallization. With a snarl, he unleashed a SPRINGTIDE STORM with all of the combined Fairy and Dark energy he could muster. The crates exploded, the swirling pink wind coalescing around the Ambipom with a violent force.[break][break]
"Need to get out of here," Nomi muttered, to nobody in particular.

SPRINGTIDE STORM USHERS IN A SEASON OF PAIN. the AMBIPOM relents under the constant barrage of fae energies. the TERASTALIZATION only furthers the attack’s amplification, knocking the pokemon out with a clean blow.

in the distance, fernando does not know how the battle fare. nor does he care to wager on an untrained pokemon such as his AMBIPOM. the pokemon he had unleashed is none other than his STEELIX. far from his most accustomed roster but familiar enough that he’s experimented on it for situations like this.

“MEGA,” he wheezes, “EVO!”

the STEELIXITE activates at his command. the pokemon starts to expand, swelling with PRIMAL ENERGY. this portion of GRANITE CAVE writhes under its impressive weight.

“clear it.”

given permission, the MEGA STEELIX starts to charge its LIGHT OF RUIN. what comes out though is sure to grant him his escape. whether or not the Z-MOVE hits, the way it destroys the foundation behind him means that nomi can proceed no further. for the cave collapses where she does not.

LIGHT OF RUIN: RUINOUS BLOOMS IN MOONLIGHT
a devastating beam of light is unleashed on the battlefield before leaving lingering energy. the user is empowered immensely, but becomes confused.

whatever is left of his AIBIPOM is buried in the rubble, never to see the light of day.

When the Mega-Steelix burst from the ground, showering Nomi and her Pokemom with gravel and Tera crystal shards, Valerian immediately leapt back to Nomi and put up a LIGHT SCREEN around her. Then he prepared to ENDURE whatever came next.[break][break]
The beam of bright light was beautiful and devastating. The woozy Nomi had never seen something quite like it before, her eyes widening in awe. A Z-move, her tired mind barely registered. She sighed softly and waited for the pain to come. Huge chunks of rock began to fall from the ceiling, the entire cavern collapsing around them. The LIGHT SCREEN deflected the incoming danger, however, and Valerian urgently nudged Nomi with his nose. We have to get out of here, he communicated, expression deeply concerned.[break][break]
Nomi tried to find Oleander amidst the debris but the STICKY GLOB had fixed him in place; tragically, he had not been able to escape the boulders in time. Crushed beneath their destructive weight, he fell silent and motionless. Nomi hung her head in defeat. She would have to leave him: there was nothing more she could do. Shakily, she grabbed another Pokeball, released Shade.[break][break]
"Get us out," she coughed out. The Marshadow swept her up in shadow, PHANTOM FORCE blinking them both away. Valerian used his Terastallized speed to hurry after them.[break][break]
Nomi had not seen the face of the person who had attacked her, but it hardly mattered. The Ultra Deep Sea was full of monsters. She'd known that going in.
