Three knocks echo on the door of Matias' ranch.[break][break]

It's the same knock Luka uses whenenever she's entering his office: one slow rap, a pause, then two quick taps.[break][break]

She always knocks so quietly, as though she's afraid of intruding even though they'd agreed to meet today. When the door opens Luka smiles tentatively, trying not to let any judgement cloud her expression as she gives Matias a quick once-over. Her eyes graze over the ankle monitor and quickly return to his face.[break][break]

"Hey," she says, holding up an armful of groceries like a peace offering. The togepi strapped to her back via baby carrier coos a lazy greeting as well. "You holding up okay?"[break][break]

"I wasn't planning on it." She can't remember the last time she's ever yelled at someone— she hadn't even screamed at Remiel Calcifet. And he deserved it more than most.[break][break]

"Besides," Luka continues, twisting her mouth into a wry smile, "I doubt it would do any good."[break][break]

She follows him into the kitchen, but not before stopping to take off her shoes and place them neatly by the door. Toffee is released from his baby carrier but she still holds him tight against her chest, like a lifeline.[break][break]

"I came here to...well. To check up on you, and..." Teeth worry her bottom lip. "We need to talk, Matias."[break][break]

it wouldn't do either one of them any good, so he's glad she's not here to yell at him. relieved, even, that there is a possibility he might be able to hold on to at least one friend by the end of it.[break][break]

Matias gets straight to the point, as always. It's part of the reason she'd enjoyed working with him so much: he was blunt but honest, and there was no beating around the bush.[break][break]

But she's never had quite the same conviction and flounders when put on the spot.[break][break] "I—" She swallows, hard, and hugs Toffee a little closer.[break][break]

"Do you want me to quit?"[break][break] she asks, turning the tables on him instead. "I...I heard you already interviewed someone."[break][break]
