he's always thought about quitting, but every time he did, something either came up that stopped him, or a sense of responsibility convinces him back to his place.

"maybe in four years," he teases. "they had me sign a contract so i'm chained until then."

it's a technicality he can always go back to that doesn't completely implicate his morals.

"also, i'm petty enough to hold the position just to not let the other members of the elite four take the title."

he doesn't really mind if any of them get it, but it's his way of getting back on them for the minor things they've done that added up over the years.

He didn’t hold any positions, but he did like keeping what was his, his.

everyone was a strong personality. kyle gets overshadowed by them in every social setting. besides, even if he does outrank them, they all still technically answer to the same person.

"maybe i just secretly don't like them. who knows?"

he shrugs. he doesn't actually mean it, but saying so just saves him time trying to explain the conflicting opinions he has with each of them.

leaving his job was technically an option, but since he'd still be living on hoenn, he's going to experience the consequences of his actions regardless, indirectly or not.

"you already met one. do you want me to introduce you to the others?" he offers.

Jett continued their “leisurely” stroll through the caves, he thought about it; but doubted that Kyle actually disliked them. Growing up, this was the kind of man who made friends with everyone, but all the same. ”I’m guessing you ain’t got no strong feelings on any of them huh?” He didn’t have anyone that he could consider a best friend, what an interesting dichotomy.

But all the same, there was a question to be asked of him, and Jett didn’t know the answer. Did he want to meet them? ”Well…I’m not sure. You guys are the faces of this side of the war, so I’d like to see what all of you think.” That wasn’t a real answer, but all the same he was satisfied with it.

he gets along with a lot of the people in the league, though whether or not it's because he doesn't have any other option was yet to be decided by kyle. he doesn't really mind them, as jett pointed out, but opinions about them differ a lot.

he already knows how jett will take them.

"yeah, you probably won't," he answers. "they're more of the 'for the greater good' kinda people. i don't blame them, but definitely not your type."

the pressure of war erodes their conscience. kyle's certain he would too in the future, unless he already is and he just wasn't aware of it.

not really, but it does bring a smile on his face. there's a certain innocence from that honesty that appears cringe, but it was too shounen that it wasn't circles back to bearable.

"does that mean you'd be one of those people who go around fixing problems for the region?"

those with near perfect attendance to weird happenings such as the sudden race to find the seal stone can be considered such.

on one hand, it makes things much more unpredictable for the league. on the other hand, it means he'd have less work to do if there would be more people volunteering their efforts for the region.

Jett laughed. ”Have you seen me at any of these things before?” That was his simple answer. ”I’d rather be having a smoke underneath the bicycle bridge.” He said as he took another pocky to his lips, forgetting about the craving that was eating away at him. He wanted that touch of that smoke, that nicotine so badly, and yet he would have to keep away from it.

”I’m just doing a little bit here, maybe I’ll earn some money, maybe I’ll look good, and I’ll be able to convince myself of a few things.” That was really it for him, his simple reply, his simple answer to all of the above. Jett took and ate his confectionary as fast as he had put it to his mouth, the sweetness was enough to stop him from drawing himself into other thoughts.

it would be nice to see him around though. as much as these were places of death, he doesn't seem like the type to die easily.

for someone who doesn't have much motivation to do anything, his tenacity must've come from someone and rubbed off on him. he's just not sure if it was jett or not.

"the surprise factor did do you good, i'll give you that."

their steps echo in the walls of the cave as they get nearer to the heart of it, where the rift was. wild pokemon have scurried away, taking refuge from the incessant fighting from both sides.

"just make sure you only do a little bit though, or else you could get scouted and conscripted," he teases.

a little jab about himself how the simple action of protecting his hometown turns to the spiral of events that led him to the deep of the league's ranks.

he's not sure if he'd take it as a compliment or not. he smiles and shrugs, deciding for the former. it's one of the skills you learn when all your colleagues are politicians, or at least people who try to be one.

"i wouldn't worry much about it. as long as you ask, i can get you out of any pickle concerning the league."

it's not that he's good at pulling strings, but it's someone with his title has a lot of pull to make requests with the commissioner. that, and he's always been practiced in the art of making excuses.

he pauses, until he recognizes all the things jett has listed a little too late.

"wait, that was a jab at me, wasn't it?"

Jett managed to let out a loud laugh and slapped Kyle on the back, it couldn’t really be called a pat with the force behind it. ”Don’t overthink it, that’s one of your bigger skills.” He said, the smile on his face didn’t really fade out too much, this was a person he found far too easy to slip into old habits with. It was like being a teenager again, and that was warm for a number of reasons. He wanted to see just how things would go in the future, with this person.

”I’ll leave my lack of prison time in your capable hands once again, bud.” He said with another laugh as he put another stick of pocky in his mouth; Jett offered another to Kyle. ”Sure beats smoking. Do it like the old days, back to back, against an enemy.” This time, it wasn’t because he himself had started it.

he takes the pocky and puts it in his mouth without second thought. he doesn't smoke, but he does chew it in a way that simulates one.

"it might come as a shock, but yeah, it's basically the same as anyone else."

it's not like there's order in this chaos.

whether it's hypothetical or not, kyle beams at the thought of the old times. if there was one thing he liked about his job (besides the benefits and the paycheck), it was the adrenaline that comes with action.

"wait, i'm actually down. you should get to see the people they send to me. a lot of them are people who'd straight up ignore the pokemon and go straight for the trainer."

he sounds more excited than anything.

The law wasn’t the most important thing for him but his morals were, it wasn’t the best thing to say to this person, but considering how many times he had been bailed out that was fine.
