Going on a mission with a partner after so long feels surreal. It’s been almost half a year since Navy’s worked or fought, yet he mantles his role well. It’s like putting on an old, well-loved glove. At his side is a man that he has ascertained is a ranger. Exactly who this ranger is, Navy doesn’t know. It’s not important right now.[break][break]
What matters is that they have a mission. After turning in the cargo they recovered together, they received a report about a hidden stash of goods near an entrance to the Ultradeep Sea. Close enough to hear its telltale heartbeat. Navy hates that sound. He hates this place. He doesn’t see what’s so worth fighting over.[break][break]
Were it up to him, he would bomb every entrance to this pit. Raze the place. Consign it to be someone else’s problem many years in the future. But man, in their avarice, wants more than they need. The League and the Rockets both want what’s here. So, good men will fight, bleed, and die for the satisfaction of their elders.[break][break]
“Sounds like this one’ll be guarded by a trainer who actually knows what they’re doing, old timer.” Navy has reordered his Pokeballs, gotten them all ready and lined up in a row. Roland has provided what healing he can. His team is as ready as they’ll ever be.[break][break]

Hadn’t—hadn’t he realized just who he was just yet?

(Sometimes it was best to keep some secrets.)

Accompanied by Lynette the Gardevoir, who’d barely taken a scratch in the earlier scuffle, the humanoid Pokémon held out an arm, as if to make them stop from moving forward any further.

“I think she’s found someone,” he gestured at her motion, before tilting his head in the direction of a rather conveniently-located outcrop of ‘rocks’ they could hide behind.

“Let’s wait here and see who’s coming by.”

Hopefully, unlike last time, whatever they would find this time would be something of significance because the caravan they’d managed to accost earlier was on the basic (if somewhat embarrassing) side of things.

At least the League had more supplies to distribute to everyone who was out here fighting.

This time, they are only met by a man. One single, unassuming man. He travels through the cave with confidence. He wears a long, dark coat meant to conceal whatever is underneath as well as stave off the cold of this place. Shadows cover his eyes, cast by a hat he wears. From what Navy can see, they’re bombardier’s eyes. Hard, steely things. Vicious shadows that consume all they behold. The mere sight of these eyes makes Navy shudder.[break][break]
Whatever this guy’s carrying must be important. He carries himself like a seasoned trainer. There’s none of the arrogance in his step that define the overconfident grunts. Every footstep is one that is taken with confidence.[break][break]
Any empath in the area is able to feel the calmness inside of his heart. This is a man bereft of fear. Mingled into the calm is confidence. Determination. Loyalty. A desire to see this mission through to its completion.[break][break]
“This guy’s serious.” Navy whispers. “Must be carryin’ somethin’ good. Ready to jump him?”

Thankfully, Lynette’s assumptions hold true—and while they only encounter one man, the gait is vastly different from what they’d encountered earlier—it’s as if this one knows what he’s doing.

The Gardevoir continued to squint at the other human, before shuddering—and that was… a sign. Lars never saw his Gardevoir shudder like that.

It was a sign of things to come.

“She doesn’t react like that often,” he continued quietly as he plucked a second shrunken-down marble before rolling it in his fingers. “Make sure to have a second Pokéball ready—I have a feeling we’re going to be in for it.”

And just to make sure that they were indeed, going to crash this wanderer’s parade—

“On your lead.”

“Alright, then.” Navy nods. That’s the end of the discussion. He feels like an old-fashioned Unovan gunslinger. Stepping out from behind the rocks, he gets ready for the duel. He tosses out Roland, who falls into a battle position.[break][break]
His opponent regards him and the man that surely follows with cool precision. His eyes focus on the ranger more than Navy. He recognizes him, even if the younger man at his side remains oblivious.[break][break]
“Hmm.” That sole word is the only acknowledgement he gives. After Navy has tossed out his Pokemon, the courier is afforded the right to choose what Pokemon he will bring out first. An Aegislash erupts from one ball. Alongside it is…[break][break]
Well, it’s a strange Pokemon. It could be called a Misdraevus, but its mane is too long. Indeed, this mane flutters in the wind. Both Pokemon advance. They attack.[break][break]
Well, more precisely, the Aegislash disappears. Roland glances about, searching for his opponent. He finds his own shadow growing just in time to clash with the Aegislash that emerges from there, trying to deliver a shadow sneak attack.[break][break]
This strange Fluttermane looks at the other duo and opens its mouth. A blast of purest moonlight spills from its mouth. It is a moonblast as good as any other – perhaps even moreso. A powerful blast, meant to take them out of commission early.
