Alongside the dark-furred Flareon sent to his aid by Tempest Quinn, the Shadow Luxray stolen from Thomas Benoit proves instrumental in slowing the pursuit of the League. Her SCARY FACE was an intimidating sight to behold.[break][break]

A final PHANTOM FORCE from his living Dhelmise brings them to the Rift, to the cave beyond, to freedom.[break][break]

Outside of Granite Cave, Dewford encapsulates the stillness of suffering. Most citizens had been evacuated or otherwise hid from the carnage. Those who would still fight make their last stands in the Rift. [break][break]

Luxray lopes at Gavin's side, blood darkening the fur around her maw. She could rip his arm off with ease, yet she only curls around his thigh with a low rumble in her throat. Grateful for the extra support, Gavin keeps one hand on her back as he limps toward an abandoned house. Its door has been left open, whether by the work of looters or a panicked evacuation, and the lights are still on inside.[break][break]

Having not much the strength to go further, Gavin closes the door behind him and slumps against it, head spinning. He has to nudge the Flareon away from his injured and bloody arm, his MIASMA working as a deterrent to her desire to sink teeth into flesh.[break][break]

His earpiece is still busted. There's no way for him to communicate with Rocket, but there is a way to communicate with Tempest Quinn.[break][break]

Lugia greets Temp as soon as he's through the Rift — not with her physical presence, but with a telepathic voice he's heard before. Deep, ordinarily soothing in spite of its corruption, but now edged with threatening anger.[break][break]

Go to him.[break][break]

A command, not a request. She could not reach Gavin without destroying the building around him, could do nothing for his injuries but avenge them. Her shadow looms as Temp exits the cave, a lash of her tail pointing in the direction of Gavin's sanctuary. Without another word, the shadowed Guardian alights from her perch on the rocks and dives into the ocean.

Temp staggers from the rift.[break][break]

He doesn't need Lugia to press into his mind, tell him what to do. Even if the dark Legend wouldn't have issued the command, Temp would have tore every rock and house apart in Dewford to find his husband. Even if he doesn't share the same connection that Cillian Quinn does with her, he hopes he can press that into her mind in return. His love and devotion. The mild obsession that was kept at bay with rational thought. Gavin was safe with Temp no matter what.[break][break]

Tired feet find the door. Temp grunts as he paws against it, a faint knock of warning. Last thing he needed was to get blasted by Faolan or gutted by a Shadow mon.[break][break]

With Gavin, Agni flicks up her ears from where she is trying to steal licks of his blood. She growls, sniffs the air, and only then relaxes again. She knows her Trainer's scent.[break][break]

"Cill?" Is called out, rough. Bloody knuckles are rubbed under his nose, smearing blood and dust. He leans against the door, heavy, testing the knob. "Bleeding out in there all by yourself, sexy?" A frail joke.

Luxray growls, low and deep. Ears flat against her skull, tail twitching, electricity crackling in the air around her as she prepares to defend her new master from whatever threat existed beyond that door.[break][break]

It's Agni's comparatively calm reaction that reassures Gavin, who soothes the angered lynx with a brush of fingers through fur.[break][break]

His husband's voice is muffled on the other side of the door, but remains a beautiful sound.[break][break]

"Sec," is gritted out, as Gavin grasps the handle to haul himself up. Pain screams through his right leg, and the door opens to a haggard man leaning against the door for support. Bloody, with gashes in his arm and one across his cheek. The ruin of his pant-leg sticks to burnt flesh.[break][break]

"Bit less sexy than you remember, maybe."[break][break]

A weak attempt to return the joke.[break][break]

The Luxray, recognizing Temp, bares her teeth and looks as if she might lunge for his throat. He has met the creature once before, having prevented her attempt to steal a baby Shinx that should have been his cargo.[break][break]

"No," says Gavin firmly. "Leave him."[break][break]

She growls, but Gavin's SHADOW MIASMA keeps her obedient.

"Mmmmm." Temp steps forward when the door is opened to him, not hesitating to lean in and steal a kiss from his husband. Deep but chaste, all things considered. Quick, for the solid reassurance the other was alive. His warmth. Hope that Cillian Quinn doesn't mind the grit and grime on him.[break][break]

"You get more beautiful every day."[break][break]

But they had things to worry about. Like his husband, for realsies, bleeding out. Temp was battered and bruised (maybe something broken or sprained) but he would be fine in the short term. He glances at the Luxray, brow raised, but fumbles for his belt.[break][break]

A shiny Shinx, fluffy and glowing with Illumina energy, squeaks as she's released. This is followed by a Shaymin. Not a pokemon that Temp usually used. It's life was mostly lounging in the garden of his and Gavin's home.[break][break]

"Healing Wish." He orders the hedgehog. It glances back at Temp, then at Gavin with wide eyes, before a powerful glow takes over the small pokemon. A bright light shines down on Gavin. Temp calls the small hedgehog back into a pokeball as it faints in his arms.[break][break]

"Better?"

Temp will feel Gavin's weakness in the lack of fervor behind the kiss — returned, and eagerly so, but without the fearsome passion for which he was known. He relies on his husband to support his weight, not hesitating to lean against him.[break][break]

Trust.[break][break]

Gavin's brow furrows, too, but it's not until Temp releases the shiny Shinx that it connects in his war-fogged mind.[break][break]

It was the same Luxray.[break][break]

She prowls forward on large paws, jaws parted to reveal teeth meant for slaughter. Yet for all that it looks like she might devour the kitten whole, she merely takes in its scent with a displeased rumble.[break][break]

Largely unfamiliar, and yet...[break][break]

Lashing her tail one last time, the Luxray licks the Shinx hard enough to topple her, then sits down. The raised fur along her spine lies flat, though she still eyes Temp with a wariness borne of uncertainty.[break][break]

The poor sacrificial Shaymin infuses Gavin's battered body with everything it could, and Rocket's underboss feels a tingling surge of energy flood through him. It was not a miracle. He would still scar. But there is a newfound sturdiness to his stance, his golden gaze not as dull as it had been.[break][break]

"Thanks," he mumbles, gruff. He can't look his husband in the eye, instead feigning interest in the Luxray's interaction with the kitten.

It's not easy for Gavin to admit weakness, let alone defeat.[break][break]

He had failed.

Mitten mewls as she's knocked over. The glowing bits of fur from her Illumina transformation shine brighter as it's disturbed. Yet the kitten only starts a rumbly purr in her chest, scrambling to stand back up and lick her mother in return. Temp is happy with the reunion; but also surprised. This wasn't one of Cillian Quinn's shadows when they last saw one another.[break][break]

Later, later. Temp had to make sure his husband wasn't in so bad of shape that the Healing Wish wouldn't be enough.[break][break]

Gently bullying the other, Temp shuffles inside the door. It wasn't safe for them to be out in the open. After pushing his way inside, the door clicks behind him. Temp finally lets out a a relieved sigh and takes his husband in further.[break][break]

A hand takes Gavin's, guiding him over to a couch. It's been shoved to the side, as if it was maybe once a barricade for this very door. Temp plops down on it with a groan, feeling his joints ache and wounds pull. Idly he rubs the scar from earlier, his chest still sore from that one. He tries to pull the other down with him; it would be good for them both to rest a few moments while they could.[break][break]

The battle was ending. Regardless of who won or lost today, the two of them had fought hard.[break][break]

"What's on your mind, babe?" Temp can see that something is eating up the other from the inside.[break][break]

And it wasn't even Agni. The Flareon has lost interest in the Shinx as soon as the Luxray had laid claim. Instead she followed the two humans onto the couch, still sniffing at Gavin curiously.

Whether or not the Luxray bore any true relation to the Shinx or had merely claimed the cub for her own on some instinct, the bond seems strong enough to override the shadow's killer instinct.

A strange sight that reminds him of Lugia's fierce maternal protection over Gavin. How he could feel her worry radiate as strong as her fury when he'd stumbled from the Rift and into her sphere of influence once more.
[break][break]

Though the HEALING WISH has soothed his injuries, the mental fatigue of a long-fought battle is not so easily chased away. Gavin is exhausted, and thus pliable enough to his husband's wordless demands. He allows himself to be guided to the couch, sinking against its cushions and curling in on himself as if to protect his vitals from further harm.

Yet for all his lack of resistance physically, it is much harder to pry truth from his lips.

"I'm fine," he lies, too easily. "Just tired."
[break][break]

Temp would know better, of course. He's seen Gavin's tired. It is not this.

Cillian Quinn was pliant and warm. Temp needed that, in this moment. When the other could curl into the couch, Temp would slide closer, wrap an arm around the other to pull him close. They both smelled of sweat and dust and iron; but it was familiar enough that Temp didn't care. He just wanted to feel the security of the other's heartbeat.[break][break]

If it had been another day, another time, Temp would have been more gentle with his lover. But it had been a long day at war and killing and battles. He was tired and keyed up on adrenaline and the buzz of death under his nails.[break][break]

Temp slips his fingers under Gavin's chin to tilts his head back. Force the other to meet his eyes. He uses their positions on the couch to lean over him just slightly; quirks a brow as he glances down at the other. [break][break]

"Bullshit."[break][break]

Called on it instantly. Temp leans in, brushes his lips over Gavin's again. Whispers into this mouth.[break][break]

"Tell me what's wrong, Cill." An order. But unlike the command to get away, this one is softer. It allows Gavin more wiggle room.

Temp smells like smoke and iron, blood and battle. A familiar scent to Gavin, unfamiliar in the context of his lover's musk. Yet he welcomes it as he leans his weight against the other's, quietly partaking in offered comfort.[break][break]

There's a soft groan when Temp shifts, as much out of pain as protest.[break][break]

Gavin still won't look at him, until Temp grips him by the chin and forces the issue. Gavin's eyes widen, pulse quickening. Initial attempts to deny the conversation his husband wants to have are stilled along with his muscles, attention rapt.[break][break]

It is an instinctual rush of fear, and yet it's different — Temp will not hurt him. That much is a certainty.[break][break]

It's the dark intensity in Temp's eyes, the brush of lips like a promise. Gavin shivers beneath it, resolve melting under the flush of heat through his skin. He feels exposed beneath the burning gaze, as if Temp could taste the lies on his tongue. Still, there is enough remaining gentleness to press the issue.[break][break]

It is not sheer stubbornness, but pride. He has always been a rock, a pillar, the strength in his relationships. Vulnerability does not come easy. For if he admits to Temp his mistakes, his husband might think less of him.[break][break]

His father always has. Rocket has. Why would anyone be an exception?[break][break]

"I'm fine, love."[break][break]

Yet he doesn't promise, because Gavin won't make promises he has to break.

Temp refuses to be mollified with lies even for Cillian Quinn's comfort. The hand on his chin trails lower.[break][break]

A grip on the front of Gavin's throat. Temp squeezes, once, in a warning. Not enough to cut off breath. Just enough to make sure Gavin is aware. Temp would never hurt Gavin intentionally. Yet the weight of the hand is a soft threat between the two of them.[break][break]

There is not judgment or anger in Temp's eyes. Just a steel. A refusal to back down and allow Gavin to wallow in his own bullshit.[break][break]

A sweet promise mixed in with a pleasing threat.

A single squeeze restricts the sharp intake of breath, and the resulting flush of heat fogs his brain against eloquent denial.[break][break]

His golden gaze burns accusatory, I know what you're doing, but Gavin recalls the ferocity his husband had displayed on the battlefield and decides that, perhaps, that was a suitable reason to disclose his demons. Just this once.[break][break]

"It's really hard to think when you look at me like that," he protests, petulant, more as an excuse to gather his scattered thoughts than any real fight.[break][break]

His hand comes up to twine with the one at his throat, lips brushing apologetic kisses over the knuckles. He doesn't like to lie to his partner. It's not malicious in nature when he does.[break][break]

"I got caught," he says at last, the final word tight with emotion. "If you hadn't showed up when you did..."[break][break]

Without the hand on his chin, he averts his gaze.[break][break]

The answer is clear: he's ashamed.

Cillian Quinn signals for release and Temp does so without fight. The kisses are sweet and welcome. Yet Temp has two hands.[break][break]

The other comes up to cup his cheek, lift the other to meet his eyes again.[break][break]

"None of that." Gentle and soft now. The steel in Temp's gaze lessens, soft and warm around the edges.[break][break]

"If I hadn't shown up, I would have tore the League apart until I had you in my arms again." It's steady, resolute. Temp would do nothing else. Let him be chaos on the League. He dared them to even think of laying a finger on what was his again. Obsession and possession burned deep at the core of him.[break][break]

If anything ever happened to Gavin, those who hurt him would wish for hell as respite from Tempest's wrath.

It's hard to look his partner in the eye when all he feels is shame.[break][break]

Since childhood, he has been taught the consequence of failure. Since Kanto, he has been taught how that consequence might bleed out from the individual and onto his friends, his family, his husband.[break][break]

"That's the problem," he says, features twisted with pain. "I know you'd stop at nothing, and that would get you killed, too."[break][break]

Too. A simple word that betrays the reason behind his fear.[break][break]

Gavin Merlino is not a man Rocket can afford to let walk.[break][break]

Temp was powerful, downright terrifying with the bonds of morality cut from him, but he was only one man against a whole organization whose loyalty to Gavin surely only extended so far as his usefulness.

"Where did my confident husband go?" Temp strokes the other's cheek again, soft and warm.[break][break]

"You think you get overpowered once and Rocket's going to throw you out like used tissue?" His voice rumbles, insulted on Cillian Quinn's behalf that the thought even crossed the other's mind.[break][break]

Gavin wasn't just some asset no matter how much Rocket liked to think he was. If you cut Gavin open he would bleed purple. His life was Rocket. Gavin was Rocket at this point. To think the organization could ever cut him away without damaging itself was laughable.[break][break]

"You're Gavin-Fucking-Merlino. You think Rocket wouldn't tear down the gates to get to you? Babe, I'd be leading the charge but I wouldn't be the only one fighting."[break][break]

And it wouldn't be to kill you. Goes unsaid.
