It looked like she was doing a card trick. Her volunteer, though he wasn’t sure it could be called that when it was a pokemon, was a Floragato. It took a bit for them to notice him with the Floragato noticing him first. The yo-yo didn’t hurt only loosely wrapping around his arm before falling off.

As the girl turned towards him his sharp gaze could detect something in her hand though he couldn’t really make it what it was. But from the way her hand was perhaps a weapon. It was almost amusing to see the girl lose her composure when seeing him, almost considering he seemed a good bit older than her.

He was use to people reacting this way to him so he waited for her to regain her senses. To her credit it actually didn’t take her long to recover from seeing him and he pretended not to notice her smoothing out her hair. These were all things he was use to and he had people gawk at him for a longer time or try to cling to him. So compared to others she was pretty tame. Maybe because she hadn’t hit adulthood yet.

As she announced him a volunteer he noticed that there was another Pokémon. The fact they were in an alley made him curious. However it was best to focus on the whole magic thing and worry about the other stuff later.

Deciding to humor her he picked a card making sure she wouldn’t be able to see which one he chose. ”I’ve picked a card now what?” he inquired, a small smile gracing his lips.[break] Harper Mann

The idol took up the now vacant seat, which was just an old paint bucket. Considering the fact they were in an alley he figured it’d come out of a dumpster or something. That didn’t really phase him though. He was sure it was something his father would view with contempt though so doing something he knew his father wouldn’t approve of was a bonus.

Taking a cursory glance he had to resist the urge to snort in amusement. His face carefully blank as he had glanced at the card as well. Giving nothing away. But the fact the card he had pulled was the Ace of Spades had to be some kind of irony. Or perhaps that was just the way his luck went.

Things considered remembering his card wouldn’t be hard so he slipped it back into the deck when she was asked. The castform having moving closer to him as he did so. Almost seeming like he wanted him to put it in a certain spot. Or perhaps the castform just wanted to help. He smiled at the castform before realizing he should tell Harper he had added the card back.

”Okay, it’s back with the others,” he told her so she would know that she could open her eyes. Now he would just have to watch the rest of her trick. He figured it was where she would guess which card he had had. But rather she would add her own twist onto the trick was the question.[break] Harper Mann

The young man could tell that it was hard for her to keep her eyes closed from the way she would sometimes squeeze her eyes closest. The fact she would have trouble keeping her eyes closed wasn’t to surprising. It was pretty common in children especially young ones. After all many children lacked patience. Though for some it would be for another reason entirely.

The wait wasn’t too long though since it didn’t take long memorizing a card. Especially considering the card he had pulled. Any of the really important cards would be easy to remember. After he had told her that he had replaced the card she would thank him before continuing the trick.

He would watch as she reshuffled the deck which would mix his card in among the others. The young man would keep an eye on her hands until she came to a stop and with a snap had the Ace of Spades face up. Seeing his card he would clap. ”That was great, especially considering that was my first magic trick,” he would tell her as he took the offered card back.

Hearing her response about him signing the card he couldn’t help but chuckle. He had a feeling she didn’t realize that he was a rising idol and that signing stuff wasn’t exactly uncommon. ”Its cool just because it was a magic trick. I’ve always been curious about magic but certain things kept me from ever seeing any magic tricks.”[break] Harper Mann

It was probably a bit of a surprise to have never seen a magic trick before now. But his father had seen it as a waste of time. Or more like he saw it as a distraction from his school work. Or something that would only serve to end up giving him even more ideas that opposed what his father planned for him.

He kind of felt bad now that he had brought it up. ”I wasn’t trying to make you feel bad. I still thought it was a good trick. I’m not the type just to give out praise for no reason,” he told her.

Talking about his reasons might bring the mood down. So he figured he would just give a watered down version of the reason. ”Not exactly, my father was pretty well off,” he told her before continuing. ”He just thought anything fun was a waste of time.”

”I kind of left in the middle of the night for that reason. And I haven’t been back since,” he told her. Well that wasn’t the real reason but it was close enough to the truth. His fathers lack of support for his dreams wasn’t something he felt like getting into.

Raising a brow he stood up and allowed her to grab onto his hand to guide him. It wasn’t something he minded. Even if it was a bit awkward due to the difference in height.[break] Harper Mann

He chuckled as she mimicked his reaction, though he was sure she was exaggerating it a bit. After all, he wasn't always the best at showing his emotions. He was getting better at it, though, and surprise was actually one of the easiest emotions to show. So he was sure he had shown his surprise for such a trick.

It was good to know she didn't have a problem with things, though he was sure she would show him another trick. A trick that she thought was better than the first, something he was certain of from the way she was acting. Or perhaps he only thought that because it was something he would have done himself.

Upon hearing her comment, he had to resist the urge to frown. He really didn't like thinking about the life he had with his father. Sure, his father wasn't terrible; he had never raised a hand against him. But he couldn't be considered a good father either, not with the way he often belittled him and didn't support his dreams.

"You would think so, but my father believed the only way to achieve what you wanted was through hard work. He had certain ideas about how I should live my life," he said with a small shrug. There was no need to tell her that his career path didn't align with what his father wanted for him. In fact, his father had thought he was wasting his time by wanting to be an idol.

When she suggested that running away was a good idea, he raised an eyebrow. "Some people wouldn't see it that way. It was pretty careless of me to just run off like that. I didn't know the first thing about making it on my own," he said, his thoughts straying to those first few months alone. He had collapsed one day because he had been without food and water for a few days and had no means of acquiring more. Fortunately, a kind older couple had helped him out back then.

Mentally shaking himself to clear his thoughts, he continued to let her lead him through the labyrinth of backroads and alleyways. She led him into what appeared to be an abandoned building, something he filed away for later before following her to a window.

When he heard her comment, he simply nodded before turning his attention to the window. The vantage point gave a clear view of a stage that had been set up in another building. Now all they had to do was sit and wait to see what happened.[break] Harper Mann

Wasn't that just terrible? Why couldn't fathers just let you live your own life? He knew not all fathers were like his own, but when he heard about someone's father being like his own, he became annoyed. On the inside, he was annoyed, but he didn't allow the annoyance to show on his face.

He just gave an understanding nod, and she started to say something before cutting herself off. This caused him to raise a brow, but he didn't press her. If she didn't feel comfortable telling him something, that was on her. He wouldn't force her to share something she wasn't comfortable with. He wasn't like his father. His father would've definitely pressed her for information.

As she pointed out that he must have learned quickly from his own mistakes, he nodded. "I learned how to ration things better," he agreed. Seriously, rationing should have been the first thing he had thought about when taking off. But growing up, he had wanted for nothing. So going from that to struggling to have enough of anything had been hard.

The magic show had been interesting, and once it was done, he had turned his attention back to Harper. "Well, it was definitely interesting. I quite enjoyed it," he told her as he took out his phone to check the time. Seeing the time, he frowned. Was it really that late? He had been in Petalburg longer than he had thought.

"I'm afraid I have to get going. I forgot I had a prior commitment today. I should get going before I'm late. It was nice meeting you," he said as he began to make his way back the way they had come.[break] Harper Mann
