High upon Mt. Pyre, there grows a patch of carrots.[break][break]

They've been tended to lovingly for months. Fertalized, watered, and sunned with care, their leafy green foliage stretches towards the sun in a burst of verdant green. The little garden is squared off by a few rocks and kept free of weeds and debris, a quaint spot on top of the mountain for those who know where to look for it.[break][break]

Luka's always taken comfort in the fact that life can grow even in a place like this. Her weekly visits to Mt. Pyre have become more than just visiting the memorials to her father and fallen Pokemon— they're a time of peace, a moment of respite shared between herself and the earth. She doesn't have the greenest of thumbs, but there's still something comforting about digging one's hands into soil and feeling life below your fingertips. [break][break]

Today she's here to weed, though in looking at her little garden patch, she wonders if she should finally harvest her crop. It's so hard to tell! She doesn't really have an eye for this kind of thing, and part of her doesn't want to give up the hobby just yet. But the Steenee that accompanies her seems to think otherwise, tutting as she observes that the carrots have been here so long that they've started to flower.[break][break]

Helios, in the meantime, has gone off on his own to pay respects to his late trainer as usual. So far this afternoon is playing out like any other day— warm sun, a cool breeze, and the smell of greenery and earth. Luka lounges by her garden patch and idly plucks at the stray weeds that have dared to invade, perfectly content to waste a pleasant day away beneath the sun.

TAMING THE HORSE

UPON RETURNING TO MT. PYRE, the same unnerving feeling of being watched returns. on this eerie mountain, your footsteps seemingly disappear in the mist that endlessly billows out from the earth. oddly enough, the time of day is obscured: it seems like you're in eternal night. this has never happened before and as you struggle to find a rational explanation for this phenomena, you instinctively hush yourself. a horse-like pokemon neighs in the distance. wreathed in spectral mists, a black equine pokemon hovers in midst the fog.

however, the horse seems to notice you. it advances close. the clopping of hooves is muted— or rather, it sounds like an ominous breeze surging in like a tide. suddenly, it disappears in the dense haze before reappearing behind you like a phantom.

That evening, Luka decides to finally harvest her crop.[break][break]
It's not an ideal day for it; the misty mountaintop seems colder than usual, and the atmosphere feels unsettling and oppressive. And although she'd arrived with plenty of daylight left, the sky seems to darken far sooner than usual. But she'd come here with purpose, so she shakes off the chill and gets to work.[break][break]
The carrots she pulls from the earth are unlike anything she'd ever seen. Their roots are a deep purple and longer than carrots ought to be, curling oddly at the ends. At first she wonders if they'd rotted from being underground so long, but the leaves that grow atop are still green and healthy. Though if she looks closely, she notices that the tips are also turning a purplish hue.[break][break]
She plans to collect the rest of her strange harvest and leave, but the sun is suddenly snuffed out and the mountain is plunged into darkness. Luka staggers to her feet and shivers as more mist billows up around her, illuminated only by the flames Helios provides her to see by.[break][break]
Instinct tells her to turn around, but the sound of a whinny gives her pause. It's hard to tell through the darkness and fog, but an equine shape slowly begins to take form in the distance. Their dark body blends in almost seamlessly with the night, and for a moment Luka wonders if she's imagining things.[break][break]
Her suspicion seems confirmed when the shape vanishes. Just a trick of the fog, surely. But then it materializes right behind her and Luka shrieks in surprise, staggering backwards a few paces as she finally gets a good look at the creature that lurks in the mist.[break][break]

Helios takes an assertive step forward, but she holds up her hand to stop him. Once the initial shock has subsided she can look at the horse more clearly— their ghostly form is a bit spooky, but doesn't appear threatening. "W-woah, hey! It's okay," she assures gently, reaching up to pat her Blaziken on the top of his crested head. He snorts once again but falls back, arms folded as he regards the spectral horse with clear suspicion.[break][break]
"Sorry about that," Luka says softly. "You just caught us by surprise, is all. You're so quiet!"[break][break]
She glances down at the horse's hooves and realizes with a start that they aren't attached to the rest of it. Luka swallows hard and tilts her gaze upwards again, staring into an enigmatic, expressionless face.[break][break]
"Ummm..." She shifts her little satchel of carrots and notices the horse's nostrils flare. Their intent suddenly becomes clear, and she feels a little foolish for taking so long to realize it.[break][break]
"Oh gosh! Sorry, erm...w-would you like a snack?" Luka pulls out one of her dubious looking carrots and offers it, her arm fully outstretched and fingertips buzzing with nerves. The appariton in front of her takes a regal step forwards, sniffs the offered vegetable once, and takes a delicate bite.[break][break]
And then, just as suddenly and mysteriously as they'd arrived, they vanish.

THE NEXT NIGHT, you don't spot the horse; however, it does find you. reappearing some distance away, it remains still: an eerie image in the mist. like spectral scarves, the mountain's ominous fog passes through where the horse's pasterns should be.

When she comes back the following day, the mountaintop is suspiciously barren.[break][break]
But the fog remains, as does the unsettling feeling of being watched. It spider-steps up Luka's spine and stiffens the hair on the back of her neck, but there's nothing to give substance to the sensation that compels her.[break][break]
Curiousity continues to drag her forwards however, step after uncertain step. The ground is blanketed in a fog so thick she can barely see her feet but still she trudges onwards, as though drawn to the mountaintop by an ontherwordly force. In the silence that permeates the air she can almost hear voices— whispers carried on the wind and tangling in her hair, speaking tantalizing secrets that she can't quite understand.[break][break]
When the horse reappears this time, they're standing near her father's memorial headstone. Luka sucks in a gasp but Helios bristles, angry and suspicous rather than reverent. But before he can act out Luka grabs his taloned hand and holds it tight, offering a squeeze and a silent plea. The Blaziken breathes an unhappy plume of smoke, but holds himself back.[break][break]
Luka keeps her hand around his talons as she reaches out with the other one. She has no carrots to offer— a Rabuta berry sits on her open palm instead. As the horse approaches she holds her breath, as though even breathing wrong might scare them away. But there seems to be a silent understanding between them, for after a few careful sniffs the beast bows their head and accepts her offering.[break][break]
There's the briefest brush of a velvet soft nose against her hand before they disappear with a flash, leaving Luka and Helios alone on the mountain once again.

UPON RETURNING TO MT. PYRE, the spectral horse awaits. its wavy mane seems quite tangled, knotted at its mauve ends. still, the sight of the pokemon is breathtaking. around you, the mist eddies and swirls like spirits escaping the consecrated ground.

The first time the horse had appeared, Luka chalked it up to yet another random, mysterious encounter. In Hoenn, such things happened so often that while unexpected, she truly hadn’t thought much of it.[break][break]
The second time she was more surprised, for it seemed such an odd coincidence to meet the same enigmatic Pokemon twice.[break][break]
But by their third meeting, she’s become convinced that the spectre is seeking her out. The thick fog is now familiar as she climbs the mountaintop, swirling around the horse’s disembodied hooves as they wait for her. [break][break]
What they might want with her, she has no idea. There’s certainly nothing she has to offer that they couldn’t get from anyone else. But for whatever reason they’ve come to Mt. Pyre three times now and Luka feels compelled to keep coming back until she can figure out why.[break][break]
She approaches with the same reverent caution as before, though she feels far more at ease as the phantom steps closer. From this distance she can fully admire their glossy coat, the regal way they carry themselves, the way their mane undulates as though caught in an unseen wind.[break][break]
But she can also see the knots and tangles that keep their curls from falling freely. She hadn’t noticed it before, but from the way the horse tosses their head and snorts, it seems as though it’s bothering them.[break][break]
This time, the horse doesn’t immediately vanish when she tries to touch them. It feels like progress until her fingers slip through their mane like smoke, unable to make purchase. Luka purses her lips and lowers her hand to her side, which prompts a discontented whinny. Her half-hearted attempt clearly isn’t good enough.[break][break]
After much hemming and hawing and trying to thread her fingers through something she can’t touch, Luka realizes that if she can’t do it, perhaps another ghost can.[break][break]
Her Zorua yips once when he’s released, the sound muffled by fog that almost reaches the tips of his ears. But he seems to understand when Luka requests a shadow claw from him. She picks him up so he can more easily reach the horse’s mane, and his little claws make short work of the tangles that mar it.[break][break]
The horse disappears soon after, as always. But Luka has a feeling that if she returns tomorrow, they’ll be here once again.

THE NEXT NIGHT, you see the horse— but it seems different in appearance from afar. getting close, you see that the spectrier's own wisps has become entangled with what appears to be a renegade soul.

when the spectrier sees you again, they seem hesitant. without the shaderoot carrots— you do not possess the same gravity you once did; however, the horse approaches still, sensing your benevolent motives. the spectrier must be freed of this spirit, for it seems to bother the horse like a clinging burr. perhaps, there is a pokemon that is an expert at sucking souls...

There’s a stowaway in their midst this time.[break][break]
Ever since the masquerade ball, Luka had noticed a Shedinja hovering around during her weekly visits to the memorials around Mt Pyre. It hadn’t taken long for her to realize that it was Remiel Calcifet’s ghostly bug that was following her around, though she has no idea why.[break][break]
At first she assumed it was a threat or some kind of warning. That it was his way of keeping an eye on her, ensuring she stayed quiet about everything he had revealed that night. But as time wore on she began to see the insect as less of a threat, just another ghost of the relationship that never stops haunting her.[break][break]
Luka can feel Hezekiah behind her as she ascends Mt Pyre this time, a silent presence that lingers unseen over her shoulder. She shakes off the chill that crawls up her spine whenever he’s near and continues to climb, eager to see if her mysterious horse is waiting for her again.[break][break]
They are, but something seems different. Off, in a way she can’t place from afar. It’s only when she approaches that Luka notices the eerie glow of a spirit, one whose trailing form and cerulean hue remind her of the will-o-wisps in fairy tales.[break][break]
”Is this…bothering you?” she asks, receiving a snort and stamp of a hoof in reply. It’s all the confirmation she needs, but Luka doesn’t know the first thing about exorcising a spirit. How does one banish the intangible?[break][break]
However, Hezekiah surprises her. The Shedinja had always been a silent, stoic presence around her. But now he moves with a deliberate slowness, flying towards the horse and their parasite. There’s a moment’s pause before he turns his back on them, and Luka watches with eyes wide as spectral energy seems to try and suck the soul in.[break][break]
But the spirit thrashes in protest, curling tendrils of mystical energy further into the horse’s wisps. They bray in protest and try to bolt, but seem trapped in place as the spirit takes root. Hezekiah moves even closer then, and a haunting wail echoes atop Mt Pyre as the crack on his back widens with a sound almost like tearing paper.[break][break]
With a painful slowness the spirit is dragged inside, but stubborn wisps remain entangled with the horse like roots that refuse to leave the soil. Luka tries to get closer and see if she can compel them away herself, but before she can reach out and touch them Helios intervenes. His trainer’s daughter is a selfless idiot, and he throws himself into the fray instead, lest she get hurt.[break][break]
Flames lick the edges of his wrists, but his usual flurry of punches and kicks have no effect here. The avian snarls in frustration and instead releases a vacuum wave to dislodge the spirit entirely.[break][break]
Another shriek rings out atop the mountain, loud and plaintive as the soul is sucked inside Hezekiah’s body. Luka clamps her hands over her ears and watches with horror as the spirit twists and unfurls, leaving the afterimage of a face contorted in pain in its wake, like the lingering flash of a camera bulb.[break][break]
Just as abruptly as it began, the scream is cut off and silence reigns on the mountaintop. And just as before, the horse is gone.

TAMING THE HORSE

THE NEXT NIGHT, you see the horse. the spectrier does not seem hesitant at all this time. instead, the horse appears to have been waiting for you, as if they were in tune with your rhythms. your schedule.

when you approach, the spectrier kicks you. hard. you fall to the cold, hard ground; however, when you lift yourself up, you find yourself peering down at your own limp body. you're not dead— however, your soul seems to have been separated from your physical form nevertheless. in this odd, spectral realm, the horse grants you a test. in its mouth, a narrow wisp of spirit acts as reins.

asking you to mount its black back, the spectrier intends on testing your mettle. this ghostly world is disorienting. nauseating. however, it intends on galloping through the steep mountain's rugged terrain to see if you can hang on for dear "life."

TAME THE HORSE:

REIN IT IN!

WITH EVERY POST, make a ROLL. you must hit or surpass a total of 100 to successfully hang on to the spectrier; furthermore, the horse is examining your ability to ride it!

You can DOUBLE POST until you hit the total.

This time, she greets the phantom with a hesitant familiarity, like she might with a new acquaintance. They’re definitely waiting for her atop the mountain, and Luka has a feeling that whatever they want with her may soon be revealed.[break][break]
She approaches with a timid smile and a hand outstretched, just like before. But this time, the horse rears up and before she has a chance to react, they kick her so hard that it separates her soul from her body.[break][break]
But Luka doesn’t feel anything. When she rises, she’s just surprised that it doesn’t hurt. And she almost brushes it off, until she notices Helios charging about the mountaintop beside her.[break][break]
He seems furious, distressed and frightened all at once. But his visage is slightly distorted and he moves slowly, as if underwater. Luka takes a step forwards and reaches out, and it’s only then that she notices her own body laying at her feet.[break][break]
Well. She had long suspected Hoenn might be the death of her, but she hadn’t imagined it like this. At first, panic settles in— she feels dizzy and nauseous and if she had a stomach, she might have been sick. Her head reels and she staggers backwards, right into the horse that watches her silently. A wisp of spectral energy appears in their mouth, and at first Luka just stares at it blankly. But realization dawns slowly, right alongside her mounting horror.[break][break]
”You want me to…?”[break][break]
She glances hesitantly between the reins and the horse, and though their eyes remain closed she gets the feeling that they’re watching her intently. Luka swallows nervously and nods, taking hold of the offered wisp.[break][break]
Unlike with their mane, her hands close firmly around it. It’s cool to the touch and she can feel it pulse slightly under her palms, like a heartbeat. Carefully, and with a distinct lack of finesse, Luka attempts to climb onto the horse’s back. She’s short and ungainly, but after a few attempts she feels something help to hoist her up, like ghostly hands pulling up her collar. Carefully, she settles astride the specter’s back and takes a deep breath.[break][break]
Suddenly, without preamble, the horse takes off at a full gallop. Luka shrieks her surprise and clings tightly to the reins, held on (for now) by nothing but pure instinct and adrenaline.[break][break]

The creature moves so quickly that for a moment Luka thinks she just might die again. But either luck or perseverance or sheer will, she manages to hold on.[break][break]The wind tangles through her hair as the pair of them ride, Luka struggling to maintain her balance upon their broad back all the while. She tightens her grip on the reins and grits her teeth, holding on for dear life— or whatever’s left of it.[break][break]
But as they continue to careen across the mountain, terror slowly gives way to something else: exhilaration. After her initial panic subsides Luka manages to squint out at the scenery as it blurs past her, a rush of deep forest greens and eerie, spectral blues. It’s unearthly and hauntingly beautiful all at once.[break][break]
Though she maintains her grip on the reins, her attention manages to focus back to the horse themselves. Is this a test of some kind? Are they taking her somewhere? The longer the ride stretches out the more Luka becomes convinced that this means something, and she’s determined to see it through until the end.[break][break]
