Busy as he was, Cillian hadn't spoke to the Head Scientist since the group meeting in which he'd dropped the news of his identity with all the grace of a dense stone. Now, he seeks her out in the laboratory as if nothing had changed.[break][break]

Much has changed, for him. There is a weight off his shoulders, as if he can breathe freely after years of walking through an invisible minefield. No more threat of a misstep that might end his career, his life. The measured flatness of accent gives way to the vibrant colours of Circhester, present in his deep voice as he asks,[break][break]

"Miss Sato. Might I have a moment of your time?"[break][break]

Though he is unsmiling as ever, there is a warmth to his tone and a lack of rigidity in his posture that speaks to familiarity, friendliness.[break][break]

"Only if it's no trouble," he adds. There's a pokeball in his hand. "It can wait, if you've more pressing matters to attend to."

She had many pressing matters to attend to, but for Cillian Quinn, she would gladly put all of them aside.[break][break]
She could still feel his arms around her as she'd cried into his chest in the midst of the Ultra Deep Sea, his nightmarish memories of Kanto made manifest by her own desire to finally know what had happened to her parents. She'd been far too busy to fully process the weight of what she'd learned at the behest of the dream mist; apparently, utilizing Rocket's hard won Seal Stone took precedence: it was simply far too important that she and the other head scientists work quickly to determine whether or not it could really be used to locate Arceus.[break][break]
But seeing Gavin - no, Cillian - at the threshold of her office, she felt a sudden constricting in her chest, the ghost of her grief mixed with a far greater affection for the Underboss. His name and accent might be different now...but he was still the man who'd held her when she'd needed it, and he'd believed her when she'd promised that she would not disappoint him like her parents had disappointed others. She had never had a brother, but surely this must be how it felt to love someone like that.[break][break]
Well, Cillian would know what it was like to be someone's brother - a fact she now knew. It had bothered her for months, but she'd finally connected the dots.[break][break]
"I always have time for you," she answered truthfully, motioning for him to enter the room. Valerian padded over and squished his face against Cillian's leg in greeting. One of the few people the Sylveon respected...liked, even. Above Nomi's desk, her Unown-K hovered watchfully, its singular eye fixated on Cillian.[break][break]
"What is it that you need?"

She invites him in with a warmth and familiarity often absent between colleagues in Rocket. He does not miss this, though neither does he call attention to it as he steps into the lab.[break][break]

A smile is spared for Valerian, a deep, "Hello."[break][break]

He scratches the Sylveon between its velvet ears.[break][break]

"I appreciate it," he tells Nomi, tone full of that same gravity it'd possessed in the Deep Sea — yet different, all the same. With effort no longer spent in controlling his vocal tone, the pitch and shift and subtleties of an accent he'd not been raised with, more notes of truth sneak between syllables.[break][break]

His attention shifts briefly to the Unown-K before flicking away, a strange sorrow settling in the pit of his stomach. He hoped Mars was all right.[break][break]

"The first wave of Genesect have been created, as I'm sure you well know." It had been a long time coming, an exciting day for Rocket. "They are ordinarily purple, yes?"[break][break]

Without fanfare, he releases his Genesect into the room.

Genesect were fascinating Pokémon; Nomi had been eager to get a closer look at one ever since she'd begun her studies of the mechanical IRON JUGULIS she'd acquired in the ULTRA DEEP SEA, Genesect being one of the only other Pokémon she knew of that was constructed by human hands. With the help of Kouji Matsubara, she was coming to suspect that some of the Paradox Pokémon made manifest by the dream mist were actually from some kind of future where humans were capable of building Pokémon as easily as they did any other type of machine. It was both a terrifying and thrilling prospect.[break][break]
The Genesect she was most familiar with was the one owned by oscar clayton, and when Cillian released his she immediately noticed a distinct difference between the two. Cillian's was red. A shining, bright, glossy red, like slick blood running over a metallic surface. To Nomi it was, like so much about Cillian and his shadowy miasma, rather beautiful.[break][break]
"Did you follow the standard procedure for creation?" She inquired, curious. "No materials were altered, even a little?" It wasn't that she doubted Cillian's ability to build a Genesect; it was merely best scientific practice to explore every possible hypothesis.[break][break]

"I did, to my knowledge."[break][break]

There was room for user error, surely, but he was a scientist himself. He'd been meticulous in his following of instruction. It was why he'd been so surprised to see the mechanical insect's glossy red sheen.[break][break]

He frowns with thought as she presses further.[break][break]

"I don't believe so, though I suppose they might have suffered some alteration before acquisition." It was often impossible to trace a Pokémon all the way back to its birth, not unless it was a purebred with all its papers.[break][break]

His frown deepens, tugging at the lines around his eyes.[break][break]

"I hope it isn't compromised in some way..."[break][break]

It had not been an easy nor cheap thing to build.

It did not look compromised, but then again, she supposed that it would be difficult to tell whether or not the creature's programming had been tampered with just by assessing it visually. She would need to run some more detailed experiments on it. Take a few samples.[break][break]
"We know that the shiny gene is recessive in most natural-born Pokémon. Your Genesect is a manmade construct, however, it's possible one of the Pokémon sacrificed for its creation carried that gene."[break][break]
If that proved true, it would be a new discovery: the shiny gene transferring not only through conception into birth, but through death into transformative rebirth. Such a prospect thrilled Nomi, and as she continued to speak, her voice carried the same sort of excitement a child might display after receiving a brand new toy to play with.[break][break]
"If you have records of - or better yet, samples from - the Pokémon used to create this Genesect, please send them to me. In the meantime, I'm going to run some simple tests, if that's allright?"[break][break]
It was a rhetorical question, really. The fact that he'd sought her help in the first place meant she could do as she pleased - within reason. As she began to gather materials for procedural sampling, she casually broached the subject that had been on her mind as of late. It seemed as good a time as any to bring it up.[break][break]
"I hope you can forgive me, Cillian, but I did a little research after your big reveal." She flashed him an apologetic smile. It was in her nature to be curious - and thorough. "In doing so, I came across something rather interesting." She paused, motioning for the Genesect to step onto a small scale so she could record its weight.[break][break]
"What happened to Saoirse?"

In contrast to her giddiness, Cillian's excitement is a muted thing. It shines in his eyes, present otherwise in a subtle tug at the corner of his mouth.[break][break]

Rocket had taught him the dangers of sharing his passions.[break][break]

"I keep meticulous records." There's a note of amusement in the rumble of his voice. He's sure she won't be surprised. "I can forward everything I have, when we're done here."[break][break]

He has not had the time yet to train his new construct in the ways of his clicks and whistles, so he tells it verbally, "Do as she says."[break][break]

It steps onto the scale.[break][break]

In the meantime, the golden gaze of the underboss settles on Naomi as she speaks. Cillian. He did not think he would tire of hearing that name for ages to come.[break][break]

He's not surprised she did her research. He is surprised, though perhaps he shouldn't be, when she brings up his sister.[break][break]

A long pause stretches between them.[break][break]

Fortunately, he does not look upset. Merely contemplative, a thoughtful frown upon his pressed lips. Naomi Sato's research would have upturned the declaration of death for both siblings, some ten years apart in time.[break][break]

"She's still alive," he says vaguely, considering his options. He cants his head slightly, the full weight of his stare settling as heavy as Lugia's PRESSURE. "Why?"

Why indeed.[break][break]
This was the tricky part, the scientist's gambit. Having a hypothesis didn't mean it would prove true. One had to be careful not to impose their wishes onto any given outcome. Neutrality was desired in all things investigative.[break][break]
But Nomi did not feel neutral about this, no matter how hard she tried. Her motivations were, in part, selfish. She wanted her guess to be right. One might call it arrogance, the desire to be as clever about people as she was about Pokémon - but such an assumption could not be further from the truth.[break][break]
She merely loved two people for all the same reasons, and desperately wanted to know if they were actually related.[break][break]
"Because she's here, isn't she?" Nomi murmured, inserting a needle beneath the outer carapace around the Genesect's hip joint. "She has a different name now, a different identity. Just like you did." She glanced up at him, cognizant of the complications that likely surrounded this conversation. "It's not my intention to force you to unmask her. I just..."[break][break]
Nomi extracted a dark liquid from the Genesect, then set the needle aside.[break][break]
"I just thought she was alone in this world, no living family. Like me. So it would comfort me to know she's not alone." Nomi blushed, fully meeting his gaze. "Because she has you."

The room feels very quiet and still despite Naomi Sato's movements around the Genesect. Cillian isn't paying attention to that at all.[break][break]

Had she spoken, perhaps, to jayden cross? Or was it so obvious with those last layers of protection stripped away? Perhaps Lulu Flint had been right for all of her caution. Yet Cillian doesn't feel threatened by Nomi's words.[break][break]

There's a sweetness to the blush that floods the scientist's cheeks, betraying her. He remembers how she'd hugged him in the mist.[break][break]

Almost like she'd been seeking the comfort of a brother.[break][break]

"She's not alone. And neither are you."[break][break]

Her parents were dead, but the bonds of blood were nothing compared to those forged by choice. Cillian hated his parents. He did not hate Naomi Sato, or jayden cross, or any of the others he'd chosen as his family.[break][break]

I don't care who you tell, he'd told his sister at last. I'm proud of you.[break][break]

And so it's with pride that he confesses, "Lulu Flint."

"I knew it," Nomi declared, triumphant, relieved. It had always made sense to her, always seemed right. They were so alike, Lulu and Cillian. She'd been tracking their similarities subconsciously since she had started working with them both more closely. Having it confirmed was like letting out a breath she hadn't even realized she'd been holding.[break][break]
She's not alone. And neither are you.[break][break]
The Genesect momentarily forgotten, Nomi felt a warm pride coarse through her at Cillian's words. His implication. Her eyes were filled with a sincere gratitude as she looked up at him.[break][break]
Cillian was far from perfect, broken beyond repair by a world that had insisted he embrace darkness in order to survive. She loved him anyway. When she was with him, she felt the lonely hole inside her heart where a family should have been begin to repair itself, stitch by stitch. He trusted her, he believed in her, he unfailingly supported her, he even teased her a little from time to time. He often said what she was thinking before she'd say it, more often aligned than not in their problem solving. Would her own parents have treated her like this? Would they have run experiments together, had revelations together, attempted to save Hoenn together?[break][break]
In the end, one didn't need to be related by blood to be similar. To be aligned. To be family.[break][break]
"I won't tell anyone else, if that's what she wants," Nomi assured him. "But thank you for telling me."

Was it really just that Naomi Sato looked up to them both, enough to spot the similarities between siblings? Or had their ruse been weaker than Cillian had hoped? Though anxiety gnaws in the pit of his stomach, he pushes it aside.[break][break]

"Thank you," he says, sincere, when Nomi swears to keep his sister's secret. "Also... she doesn't use that name any longer."[break][break]

Saoirse. There's a sadness in his voice.[break][break]

If Nomi planned on approaching Lulu over this as she had Cillian, it may be best not to use her birth name, lest she immediately send the paranoid woman into a suspicious spiral.[break][break]

"What you said, earlier. About looking me up." He thinks of all she might have uncovered about his parents, about their ties to the monarchy and about the legacy he'd left behind. But what he says is, "If you're ever curious, I don't mind if you ask."[break][break]

I trust you is the unspoken implication.

She'd read quite a bit about Cillian and Saoirse Quinn, but articles weren't biographies. There was plenty more to learn, she knew. The nuance, the details, the emotions that went along with being who they were, living through what they'd lived through. In time, she would love to hear the entire story. If not because she needed to know it in order to work with Cillian, but because she had a feeling he hadn't really had the opportunity to tell many people about himself.[break][break]
