"Does this look right to you?" Paige wondered, the question directed at Strudel. The Fidough sniffed, whined softly, then looked up at her with apologetic beady eyes. He had absolutely no idea where they were.[break][break]
Well, no matter. They'd just keep going and see if they could find the exit. Who knew Granite Cave was so big? She'd just wanted to make sure the League government folks weren't doing anything too loud up here, given that Mrs. Sawyer's house was nearby. The elderly woman lived alone and had been complaining of "bad dreams" lately, which Paige had found curious-bordering-on-concerning. She figured it had to be because of the military officers and such that had showed up a few days ago. What else could it be?[break][break]
So, she'd marched on up to Granite Cave, backpack full of water, snacks, Pokeballs, and a flashlight, and had started hunting for anybody who looked like they might be some kind of officer or soldier. Oddly, the mouth of the cave had been empty. So had the interior just beyond the mouth's threshold.[break][break]
So Paige had ventured further in, glad she'd brought that flashlight.[break][break]
The only thing was...she wasn't so sure she was still in Granite Cave anymore. As she'd walked, the cave had grown colder and colder, and wetter and wetter. Eventually one of the tunnels had opened up into a large cavern of some kind, the air thick and viscous, like a liquid but also a gas. Paige had been too awed by the glittering crystals littering the ground to realize there were no League folks here, either.[break][break]
Now, she stood staring up at a cliffside, pinkish-purple mist curling out of a crack in the obsidian rock. The hair on the back of her neck stood up as the mist pulsed, as if beckoning to her.[break][break]
Paige shivered, feeling suddenly paranoid. She turned her neck to look over her shoulder, but nobody was there. Strudel barked, attempting to chomp the mist with his teeth. It might have been funny, but all of a sudden, Paige didn't really feel like laughing.

In the aftermath of Team Rocket's attack on Dewford Town and Granite Cave, Marcus had remained with a small squad of soldiers to do cleanup of Ultra Deep Sea. Though he said nothing out loud to the others or his commanding officers, the fighting had invigorated him, filling him with a vitality that he'd lost in the months since the meteoroid incident.[break][break]

Between going home to the restless quiet of his apartment and staying to prolong the adrenaline rush, he would choose the latter every time.[break][break]

Marcus had picked up the last injured Ranger off the floor of Ultra Deep Sea and sent them through a rift back to Dewford Town when the ground beneath him began quaking with great violence. His Braviary screeched in warning, prompting him to whirl around, seeking the source of the disturbance.[break][break]

An enormous Pokémon with huge, curving tusks was charging straight at him, wreathed in pink interdream mist. It trumpeted loudly, the very air quivering with its noise. League officials would later grant it the moniker Great Tusk, a fitting name for a ferocious beast.[break][break]

Marcus turned, but the rift he'd sent the Ranger through had vanished. So he cursed under his breath and ran. He had to find another rift, and quickly. His Braviary joined him in the retreat, positioning himself between Marcus and the strange, new Pokémon, striking with AERIAL ACE to try and distract it. But the charge continued, undeterred.[break][break]

Ahead, the soldier spied a figure by a tall cliff face. A girl? What was she doing here? A small Pokémon stood at her side, too small to protect her from the tusked behemoth.[break][break]

"RUN!" he yelled at the top of his lungs.

Someone was shouting. Paige ripped her gaze away from the strange mist, heart pounding. A man dressed in military fatigues was rushing towards her, an oddly colored Braviary flying behind him. They were being chased, she realized. Chased by...[break][break]
A monster.[break][break]
"Run, Strudel!" She yelled. She scrambled back from the cliff as the man passed her, deciding on the fly that if she had to run anywhere, after him made the most sense. He was clearly one of the League soldiers she'd been looking for this whole time. He probably knew how to get out.[break][break]
The young woman took off, but her untrained muscles were no match for the soldier's, and the distance between them quickly grew. Even Strudel, with his short, stubby legs was faster than Paige. She felt a rising panic as she lagged behind, her breathing coming in shallow gasps, a sharp pain in her side. Glancing behind her, she could see that the creature chasing them - no, the abomination - had great tusks like massive, razor-sharp spears. As it bellowed, its eyes became red-hot pinpricks of rage.[break][break]
Looking back had been a mistake.[break][break]
Paige tripped, screaming as she went down. Her ankle made a terrible popping sound as she fell over one of the sparkling crystals embedded in the dirt. Strudel skidded to a stop ahead, but it was too late. He would not be able to reach her before the monster did.

The girl's scream cut through the air, and for a moment, Marcus wondered if the creature had gored her. A glance back, however, confirmed she was still alive — but not for long. The tusked beast was closing in on her.[break][break]

Marcus' body moved automatically, reactions from training kicking in. He lobbed a Pokéball in the direction of the advancing creature, as far as he could throw it. His Falinks appeared in a flash of light, its segmented body arranged around the girl as it threw up PROTECT.[break][break]

The strange Pokémon's BULLDOZE bounced harmlessly off the shield. Roaring with frustration, it reared back, only to be buffeted by a HURRICANE from Marcus' Braviary.[break][break]

The soldier was at the girl's side in an instant, but he neither looked at her nor spoke to her. Instead, his attention remained focused on the battle between his Pokémon and the hostile one that faced them.

Paige squeezed her eyes shut, ankle throbbing. She waited for what would surely be a terrible impact resulting in her death but...seconds passed. Nothing happened.[break][break]
Her eyes snapped open and she gasped in surprise as she saw the tusked beast getting thrown backwards by a sudden gust of wind. A Falinks had curled itself around her protectively, the remnants of its temporary barrier shimmering away.[break][break]
And then he was there. The soldier. Up close, she could see that he had a chiseled, stubbled face with intense eyes, cold as ice. He was focused on the battle, not her, but he was close enough to touch - so she did. She reached for his arm and grabbed onto it tightly, as if the solid feel of the muscle beneath his uniform was the only thing reminding her that she was actually still alive.[break][break]
Strudel caught up with them, finally, running up to Paige and immediately checking to make sure she was okay. He licked her free hand, expression concerned. Noticing how hard the Braviary was fighting, he growled, eyes sparkling with a sudden flash of power. A CHARM was directed at the monster, causing its attack power to diminish.[break][break]
Weakened, the abomination howled in pain as the Braviary continued its assault. Paige watched with shock as the creature began to dissipate, forming back into...pinkish-purple mist. She had never seen anything like it in her entire life.[break][break]
"What was that?" She breathed.

Something grasped Marcus' forearm, startling him. He almost jerked away, thinking it might be a feature of the realm — seaweed, perhaps — that had ensnared him.[break][break]

But it was only the girl, clinging to him as if he was a lifeline. So he relaxed, only extricating himself from her when the battle was over and the tusked behemoth had dispersed into mist.[break][break]

"Are you okay?" Marcus asked as his Braviary returned to his side and his Falinks hopped away to give the girl some space. His voice was terse and rough, but not unfeeling.[break][break]

He noted that she still sat on the ground. "Did you hurt your leg?"

Strudel whined, clearly distraught. The man hadn't answered Paige's question about the nature of the abomination - either because he hadn't heard her or he didn't actually know - but it didn't matter, not really, so long as she wouldn't have to face one again any time soon.[break][break]
Now that he mentioned it, her ankle did hurt. As the adrenaline from the chase faded away, she could feel a dull ache traveling from her foot to her upper leg. She glanced down and noticed that the area around her ankle had started to purple and swell. Gingerly - still holding onto him - she attempted to stand. The effort was futile; as soon as she put weight on the leg, she yelped, the pain sharp and immediate. She wavered, then fell back to the ground.[break][break]
"Please," she begged, warm chocolate eyes staring up at him, wide with a sudden panic. "Don't leave me."[break][break]

The girl's ankle looked ugly, and even before she tried to stand, Marcus knew she wasn't getting anywhere by herself. Without answering her — again, because he had a habit of not holding conversations with people — Marcus bent down and scooped her up, one arm under her knees, one arm wrapped around her back.[break][break]

She was small and warm against him, a fragile thing. He imagined he could crush her in his bare hands.[break][break]

"Hold on tightly," he said, his deep voice rumbling in his chest.[break][break]

Even burdened by her weight, he walked easily across the uneven ground of the Ultra Deep Sea toward the rift that led back to Granite Cave. His Pokémon followed, guarding his back as twin sentinels.[break][break]

"And no, I don't know what that was," he added after a moment's silence. "I just hope we don't run into it again. What are you doing out here, anyway?"

Paige let out a small yelp of surprise as the soldier unceremoniously scooped her into his arms. On instinct, she cuddled in close to his chest, and at his direction, clutched her hands tightly to the fabric of his uniform. He was so much larger than she was, and his arms were strong and firm as they wrapped around her. She found that her heartbeat had sped up again, but for an entirely new and different reason. She had never been this close to a man before - never been held by a man like this before. There was something undeniably solid about him, comforting and safe.[break][break]
Strudel scurried after the Falinks and the Braviary, eager to keep up. For several long moments, all Paige could hear was their collective breathing. And then he spoke, circling back to her question from earlier.[break][break]
"Looking for people like you," she answered, staring up at him. The angles of his jaw were satisfying to look at. "You're with the League military, aren't you? I just wanted to make sure whatever you were doing wasn't disturbing any of the locals. Mrs. Sawyer - she's a kindly old woman who lives nearby to Granite Cave - was complaining to me about bad dreams and restless nights the other day. I just..." All of a sudden, she felt incredibly foolish. "...thought I'd come up here and see what all the fuss was about."[break][break]
And then I got lost.[break][break]
Paige blushed, turning her gaze away.

Bad dreams and restless nights. Marcus immediately understood the cause of Mrs. Sawyer's predicament.[break][break]

"It wasn't us," he replied, continuing to trudge toward the rift. He could see it clearly in the distance; it grew larger with every step toward it. "The creature chasing us and the mist that it turned into — that's probably what's been causing your friend's nightmares."[break][break]

He would have to report it to his officers, but he doubted they would go out of their way to evacuate the locals down to Dewford proper.[break][break]

"Do you live in town?" he asked the girl, though he had a suspicion he already knew the answer.

Paige nodded.[break][break]
"Close. My family runs a berry farm just outside the town proper." She paused. "But you can drop me off in town, if that's easier for you." She didn't want to be more of a burden than she already was.[break][break]
Paige fell into a troubled silence. Could creatures like that make it out of Granite Cave and into Dewford? If there were more of the tusked beasts, they could run rampage through the small town. Dewford wasn't a sprawling metropolis like Slateport. And what was that mist, anyway? It had made her feel afraid and captivated all at once.[break][break]
"Where are we?" She blurted out. "Why did you come to Dewford? To Granite Cave?"[break][break]
If the island was in danger, she needed to warn her parents, Mrs. Sawyer, everyone. But wouldn't the League have already done that if it were actually true? Something didn't seem right about this. It all felt far too secretive and mysterious for Paige's liking.[break][break]

Though the government had taken great care to keep information about the worlds beyond the interdimensional rifts secret from the average citizen, many of them had managed to sneak through the rifts already. Marcus knew this from the news reports of regular people coming out injured or boasting Ultra Beasts in their possession.[break][break]

But he supposed Dewford Town was still relatively isolated compared to the rest of Hoenn, even though the nearby Granite Cave had its own rift leading to the Ultra Deep Sea. Either that, or the girl didn't spend as much time reading the news as she did picking berries on her family's farm.[break][break]

"We're in another dimension," he said bluntly. "The Ultra Deep Sea. You can only get here by passing through a rift like this one." The main rift was close at hand, just another thirty feet away.[break][break]

Marcus had no reason to divulge League operations to a civilian, however. It was best the girl remained ignorant. So instead, he warned her, "You should stay in town or at home. Don't come to Granite Cave again."

She didn't argue, but she bit her lip, a sign of frustration to those who knew her well. Her brow furrowed and she debated whether or not she would actually take his advice. On one hand, she did not want to meet another monster; on the other, she wasn't exactly willing to leave people like Mrs. Sawyer to suffer alone. Maybe she could at least ask her parents if the elderly woman could come and stay with them for a few nights, until this business had concluded.[break][break]
Another dimension? That was...unexpected. She'd heard things on the news about rifts, but she'd never thought they could actually affect Dewford. This was a small island with a meager population. What could have caused such a portal to open here?[break][break]
Well, some questions would have to remain unanswered. For now.[break][break]
"I'm Paige, by the way," she said to her savior, her introduction overflowing with sincere gratitude. Her frown turned into a gentle smile as she gazed back up at him.[break][break]
"You saved my life. It was incredibly brave." She blushed a deeper shade of pink, suddenly hyperaware of the way his arms shifted around her - readjusting slightly - as he and their Pokémon passed through the rift.[break][break]
