It was the recklessness of the two adventurers that saw them through to the end of the winding, treacherous, inhospitable landscape in which the very air surrounding them was burning. Shalin's water and ice Pokémon were tiring, and the road back to the steam-filled slide was long and taxing from the environment alone, let alone any Pokémon that wanted to light them on fire. Her breathing was a bit pronounced, but she would otherwise be okay, particularly when the Alolan Ninetales loosed an unearthly BLIZZARD to halt the spread of the steam. While it was temporary, it brought Shalin enough relief for her to be mostly cognizant again. "Thanks, Finn. I should be fine."

Flying back up the tunnel would be very difficult; the two would need a Pokémon capable of very precise flight and that wasn't overly large. Shalin had to save Sandy's strength; the only way she was getting out was with her Flygon. If Finn had a way to get back up the steam-filled slide, great! If not, Shalin would follow her map to guide Finn to the top in the most efficient manner possible.

Regardless of how they got there, Shalin would follow through on her plan and head down the right-side tunnel. At its bottom was a huge pile of jagged rock with burn marks on it. It seemed that the two had earlier loosed a huge explosion that previously blocked the right side and would have diverted them back through Death Crater's main "highway". Beyond the pile of rubble was another lava tube that crossed beneath the crater.

Emerging from it and turning a corner into the open once again, the two found themselves at last at the base of the crater's southeast peak, a large corner of it blown away. A bright, red light glowed above a dais in the center of the exposed crag's interior, bubbling magma rising and falling around the edges of the island it stood on as though the moon were circling about. "Holy... that's it! That's the last Medallion, Finn!" she pointed. "The Halls of Origin... I'm so close..."

On the island in front were two rather large Pokémon Shalin did not recognize: they were an Armarouge and a Ceruledge. As she sent out her Kommo-o, her heaviest hitter, to prepare for the battle ahead. She did not recognize them, but perhaps Finn did. "...What in the world are those?" Shalin whispered, pointing to them while trying to avoid direct eye contact with the menacing, powerful-looking Pokémon. "I don't think we'll be taking the Medallion without fighting them."

"Hm. Maybe we don't need to fly. Heatran's a really good climber, practically made for this kind of thing." It was much like a lava-proof spider in that way. "Ninetales can use its BLIZZARD again, and we can try to go through."[break][break]

Failing that, he'd follow Shalin's roundabout route.[break][break]

As they find themselves facing off against the Crater's guardians, Gavin feels a tingle of fear and adrenaline prickle down his spine.[break][break]

"Paldean Pokémon,' he whispers back, hushed. "I don't know much about these two, unfortunately."[break][break]

They were neither Steel nor Ice nor fossil, and thus his studies had only touched briefly upon them. He couldn't even recall their names, only that they were rare and popular in their region of origin.[break][break]

Recalling whatever Pokemon he had out, he sends out his Greninja.[break][break]

"Ready when you are."[break][break]

Excitement gleams in his eyes.

"That makes two of us," Shalin answered, sweating nervously. Her previous wounds already stung, and not knowing how they fought could mean the difference between life and death. She was out of Pokémon that could heal her, too. "I don't think this is going to get any easier, though. We'll have to learn about them as we go. Try to fight defensively; any Pokémon has a battle pattern that can be discerned and reacted to." That included legendary Pokémon.

"Let's go." With a nod that hid her true confidence level, Shalin guided Treble onto the larger island that the two Paldean Pokémon stood on. Once both of them had crossed, the red one raised its fists skyward, the blue one its ghostly blades. Rings of intense FIRE SPIN surged from the magma beneath, cutting off potential escape routes. There was no getting away from these two without a fight.

The fire-types danced about the island in an elegant combat routine, skating about the island and leaving narrow magma trails for Shalin, Finn, and their Pokémon to avoid. While they did not seem to be attacking right away, it appeared they were building up speed for an attack of some kind. It was speed that was problematic for Shalin. While her ride Pokémon were quick, it made getting into melee range extremely difficult. "I can't nail them both with Treble's CLANGING SCALES!" Shalin shouted over the burning ambiance. "They're too fast!"

Whatever the wilds' intention, the duo looked highly coordinated as the web of razor-thin magma channels grew. One misstep could lead to an incredibly painful hot-foot for explorers and Pokémon alike!

Shalin Nariya is quick to lament her inability to target both, but the battle-ready Rocket merely shakes his head.[break][break]

"Take the purple one, then. I'll focus the other."[break][break]

Turning to the Armarouge, he clicks his tongue to direct his Greninja. It lashes out with SHADOW PANIC, a dark aura much like Gavin's own spreading around the agile opponent. It aims to CONFUSE, and with it, to disrupt whatever coordinated pattern the two Pokémon were planning.

The SHADOW PANIC, intelligently fired far away enough from Shalin and her dragon steed, causes the Ceruledge to reverse course. While it didn't leave the fire-type completely delirious, it did upset the dancers' sync, the two coming close enough to one another for Treble to start shaking his tail, then his entire body, with the incredible volume from his CLANGING SCALES.

All it took was the first moment of strong vibration for Shalin to dive off her partner and cover her ears. Even then, the shockwave from the rumbling scales washed over her with great force, causing her to scream from feeling like the parts of her skin facing Kommo-o could rip apart at any moment. Parts of her body that faced Treble's direction, such as the sides of her arms, felt numb.

Both wilds hissed, not taking kindly to the shockwave, either. Still confused, the Ceruledge headed toward the near side of the island, getting a bit too close to Finn and slicing across the Greninja with its BITTER BLADE when it intended to cut Shalin or her Kommo-o to pieces. "Good save, Finn," Shalin half-groaned, breathing heavily. The Armarouge, in the meantime, twirled in the center of the island, PSYCHIC TERRAIN expanding everywhere around them. For being swift dancers, the duo were being awfully passive.

Was something big coming?

Dropping to a crouch to keep his footing, Gavin claps his hands over his ears and stubbornly endures the CLANGING SCALES. It feels almost like an EARTHQUAKE, and if he closed his eyes he might be back on the battlefields of war.[break][break]

Kanto clouds his thoughts for but a moment before he blinks it away, focusing on the very real fire over that which haunts his nightmares.[break][break]

"They're planning something!"[break][break]

He's not sure what.[break][break]

Abandoning his tongue-clicks and whistles, he shouts, "Spikes!"[break][break]

Obediently, the Greninja scatters a hail of SPIKES around the field. Any step they could take to disrupt the rhythm of the duo seemed advantageous, even if it meant forgoing damage in the meantime.

The Greninja's layer of SPIKES, directed toward the center of the island, further disrupted the fire-type duo's sync. The near-silence of the metal barbs dropping was drowned out by the still-loud scales calming down. Making the adjustment for the Ceruledge's reversal of direction, the Armorouge likewise shifts its circling.

Shalin showly got to her feet, every square inch of her skin tingling from being too near her partner Pokémon. The enraged Kommo-o started vibrating his fists again, ready to repeat the attack against the duo when the big plan went into motion. Just before the follow-up sonic attack was to connect, the Ceruledge ALLY SWITCHED with the Armorouge in the blink of an eye, leaving the fighters and their Pokémon in range of point-blank, terrain-enhanced EXPANDING FORCE. While the Greninja wouldn't be affected, anything the psychic assault hit would suffer to devastating results.

The SPIKES beneath the Armorouge's former position impaled the ghost-type, purple flames surrounding it as it vanished. While the Armorouge was alone now, the PSYCHIC TERRAIN made it more than a lethal threat, particularly for the bloodied girl. Embers in the air agitated her open wounds as she struggled to stand; even the most minor blow would tip her over the threshold of consciousness, and resuscitation in such a hostile environment would be almost impossible.

She had to make her stand now, or she would not live to see the inside of the Halls of Origin.

Desperate, Shalin sent out her beleaguered Vaporeon, whose skin already displayed cracks from how dry and overheated it was. Both she and her Pokémon glowed with an intense blue light, the Z-CRYSTAL set in her Z-PENDANT shattering. The shiny Eeveelution's tail whipped back and forth like waves of a violent storm, the following Z-MOVE: HYDRO VORTEX closer to a Steam Vortex. The scalding typhoon scooped up the Greninja's SPIKES as well, adding gash to the smash of the whirling water.

After the stress of the Z-MOVE, Shalin's legs buckled, and she collapsed, fighting to remain conscious. Rielle did likewise, the intense discharge too much for the Vaporeon to handle. The girl reached for another Poké Ball to help Finn continue the battle, but her battle was now staving off her own unconsciousness rather than with the Armorouge.

While the psychic assault does nothing to the Dark-type Greninja, Gavin is not so lucky.[break][break]

Years of mental manipulation by Rocket and it's psychic Pokémon have left his mind fragile, a back door left open. While Lugia's powerful presence could often misdirect those who'd seek to utilize such a weakness, she was miles away, slumbering peacefully in the depths of Sootopolis Bay.[break][break]

EXPANDING FORCE strikes his brain like a bolt of lightning, and Gavin crumples with a howl of agony. He grips at his skull, vision gone white with pain, limbs locking up as the aftershocks rattle through him. Shadows leak from him against his control, but the MIASMA that wreathes the Greninja could easily be mistaken for a SMOKESCREEN in Shalin's compromised state.[break][break]

Fortunate, then, that each of his Pokémon were trained to press on in the event of their master's fall. All was for the glory of Team Rocket, and the fall of a cog within that machine could not be allowed to compromise the whole. The MIASMA empowers the shadow-touched amphibian, amplifying its sharp WATER SHURIKENS to an even deadlier edge. It climbs the Armarouge as if it were some great colossus, seeking weak points in its armour in which to embed its hydro-projectiles.[break][break]

Trembling, a leaf caught in a hurricane's swell, Gavin forces himself to his knees, reaching for his faithful Lucario's pokeball. Conscious once more of his surroundings, he allows the SHADOW MIASMA to linger much like a smokescreen would, the better to stave off suspicion.

The SHADOW MIASMA would, indeed, serve as cover for Gavin; Shalin was in no condition to be thinking of anything but her survival. The HYDRO VORTEX had trapped the dancing foe in the center of the island, leaving the Greninja's WATER SHURIKEN barrage to strike with its full ferocity. The force of the attack blasted the Armarouge into the lava lake, a second barrage creating a deluge of violent explosions of steam that blinded Shalin, as well as the Harbinger if he did not have a way to see through it. When the smoke cleared, not a trace of either dancer remained.

A second wind invigorating Shalin in the presence of the Medallion's red light, she crawled to her feet as the rings of fire trapping her and her friend vanished. As she approached, she saw a cleaner view of the round object, the front of which bore a profile of the legendary Pokémon Entei. It hovered over a dais depicting the same sacred creature. "That's it, Finn!" she cried. "That's the last one!"

Claiming the Medallion for herself, her hands at first felt like they were on fire, though the feeling turned to comfortable, refreshing warmth within seconds. "Halls of Origin, here I come!" Her prize claimed, she would lead the way back to the entrance through the most efficient pathing she could come up with, and the two would be able to leave the sweltering dome without incident. Going down the lavafall was much easier than going up it, after all!

The open air of Mount Chimney had never felt so cool in her life. She was lucky to have someone as powerful as Finn assisting her. "Couldn't have done it without you. Thank you so much. Let me know how I can repay you going forward."
