he shakes his head in refusal. there are too many variables to quantify why and how. but there is merit in that thinking. the fact that the megalopolans hadn’t must stand for something. or is there just something special about kyle that he’s missing.

“not quite; i miss the days where the greatest threats were trainers with everyday pokemon. simpler times, indeed.”

a thin grimace cuts the idea.

“although i don’t suppose you share that sentiment?”

"people are harder to deal with," he admits. "they keep preaching that they're doing the moral thing, even if they objectively aren't."

his mind comes back to the blacephalon attack, where people think the better recourse of action was to wait for a friend to get turned to a meal, or that letting a child take the only clue to track down said friend as a trophy was for the greater good.

"then again, you deal with people better than i do. this is similar to our type match-ups, then, i suppose."

he was a politician, after all. kyle was a simple law officer in a humble station by slateport city beach.

"do you think there's something special with my silvally, then?" he asks. "if it's not a miracle, then something must have differentiated it from everyone else's."

kyle didn't do anything special while assembling it. he followed the instructions, arguably took the easier way when he could, and didn't add a special ingredient to mix things up.

no matter how many issues they faced, it was a group of individuals that proved the most difficult. but alone, none of them could wipe cities off the map. split off, they become predictable. controllable. pawns that can be eaten up by bishops or knights.

but the queen? a piece that can destroy any and all.

“but i digress, i suppose i’ll be relying on you a bit longer since this is your specialty.”

a moment passes as fernando considers what makes kyle’s silvally special. it had been the only one to create a unique memory.

“it could be a multitude of things. if it happens again, it might be specific to your silvally. otherwise, it could be a different factor.”

who else had pit their silvally in so many situations? he only considers himself as a far off second.

specialty. kyle wouldn't call it that, but it's comparatively better than everything else he can do.

"i've exhausted a lot of them. so far, there's nothing."

overwhelming emotions under a high stress scenario, the will to protect its trainer under a life-or-death situation, the hunger of the knowledge to hunt a new type of prey... kyle has tried emulating specific parallels to that fateful night to no avail.

"there's a reason why i resorted to calling it a miracle. coming to you with hopes to decrypt the contents of a silvally memory was just one of my many attempts."

kyle shrugs.

"oh well. this is one of those things that we'll stuck on until something else happens, right?"

there was disdain in his voice.

kyle shakes his head and moves on with the conversation. a thank you just makes a casual exchange between friends awkward, and kyle doesn't make any effort to hide it. unfortunately, he's pretty sure fernando doesn't understand the concept of it.

"i guess it makes things easier after you said that." a sigh escapes his mouth. "i'm not sure if matias asked already, but can we use your labs to create his type:null?"

"i haven't heard you refer to your siblings as their, um, that's his birth name, right?"

matias herrera. it sounds phonetically better than matias silph for some reason.

"huh. i feel like that's weird, but it's definitely in character for the two of you to not find that weird."

he supposed they never really talked about his family that way. it didn't seem like they were close in the first place, he supposed.

"basically yeah."

he starts heading to the door, only to stop just before swinging it open. his head turns to fernando, giving him one quick parting shot before vacating the premise.

"oh, yeah. what's evelyn's?" it's the one other silph that he's gotten close to. not that she's around the region anymore.

kyle wonders if he should start calling matias herrera just because.
