Callan deflected just as expertly as Isaac did. It was like a little game of tennis, keeping their own problems close to their hearts while trying to find the best way to aid the other. But no game of tennis went perfectly. Isaac, in a rare moment of opening up, had overextended himself. And now Callan was going to laser focus on that word choice.[break][break]

"Grew up in a home that never wanted me, to a family that wasn't mine," he admitted. He didn't have to get into the other reasons. One year of highest highs and lowest lows didn't change the fact that two decades had gotten him to this point in the first place. "At best, I was the leftovers. At worst . . ."[break][break]

"All these years later, hard to shake that mindset." It took a year of people adoring him to an extent he'd never envisioned to even start healing that damage, and even now he shied away when that fact became too real. "But I'm working on it. Step by step, day by day."[break][break]

Callan presses a hand to Isaac's shoulder. "Mm... like you've never really been wanted by the world." Callan offers a weak smile, "Yeah, you look like you've had a pretty rough life."

He releases his hand, letting the cigarette smoke fill the silence. "What we want..." Callan repeats, staring into a flame-orange sky, the smoke calmed his nerves, the sensation of warmth spilling into his lungs before releasing again. "If you'd have asked me what I wanted a year ago, I've gotten everything, Isaac." Callan smiles, turning towards the youth. "Then it just becomes normal, and we want more. And I don't think it's ever enough to fill that void inside of us."

He dabs the remainder of the cigarette into the holster at the bottom of his lighter, and clips it shut. "Maybe the path to getting what we need is by wanting less. But... the jury's still out on how to do that." Sliding his lighter back into his pocket, Callan slips Socialism, his Maushold, back into its Pokeball, and clips it to his belt.

"I'm gonna head off for now, take care of yourself Isaac. Maybe next time we can have a drink." With one last pat on his back, Callan heads off back towards Petalburg proper. The seeds would have to wait another day.
