There’s a rat problem. It’s holding up the grand re-opening of the casino. Today, the black dog is a rat terrier. His master sends him down into the dark places under the casino. His mission is simple: clear them out. Anyone who knows Hitoshi knows that there is only one way this can go. These rattata are going to die.[break]

The edge of Jubei’s sword finds one of them. Starlight’s basement wall is painted red with blood. Frankly, he doesn’t know why the other guy is there. Doesn’t know his name or anything about him. All the storied history that has brought this human intruding into the dog’s life is lost on Hitoshi.[break]

Company isn’t the worst thing in the world. There’s a special rat, somewhere way down. Old employees whisper and call it the Rat King. Getting to be called the Kingkiller sounds nice. It makes a goofy smile brighten up the seasoned killer’s face.[break]

“Man.” Hitoshi grumbles. “Kinda don’t like Pokemon.” He ruminates, not knowing he’s in the presence of an authority figure. “They don’t die when you stab ‘em in the throat! It suuuucks!” He grumbles about murder the way someone might talk about a favorite item on a restaurant menu being out of stock.

Starlight was not an unfamiliar sight. Jayden had been there to congratulate Killian Decker at the initial opening, and had trained there many-a-time under his mentor's dutiful eye. He had also been there to fight against the former Underboss' onslaught of beastly vermin, and knew them no easy task even long after their ownership had disappeared from the casino's sights.

[break][break] Yumi Hasegawa was a successful woman in many regards, but she did not strike Jayden as the exterminator type.

[break][break] "They do," the Rocket Admin says, the ghostly tip of his Doublade fading in his grip as one of the many Rattata fall to the ground. "They just come back in droves."

[break][break] It reminded him of the exploration to the bunker with Isaac Merlo several weeks ago.

The dog's eyes are filled with unabashed, unmistakable curiosity. Rocket's blade, for that is a title this creature can remember more than any name, lives up to his reputation. With a blade in hand, he slaughters his foe. This earns him this creature's recognition and respect. A bridge is built in moments - or at least the first few bricks are laid. Something approaching understanding forms in the dog's mind.[break][break]
"Uhuh?" There's respect in his voice. Surprise, too. "Tell me somethin', Blade. How'd you manage that? Is it just 'cause your sword's a Pokemon, too?" He briefly owned a Doublade as well. It evolved into an Aegislash before Hitoshi could really get used to the whole two-swords thing.[break][break]
"How the heck do you use that thing? Western swords're so unwieldy." He almost never gets to talk shop. Usually, he talks a big game. Tries to appear aloof and mysterious. None of that here. He's like a dog wagging his tail.[break][break]
Jubei slaughters while his master talks. None of these creatures are that special on their own. They're not the big boss. They dive into the depths, where it starts to stink. No lights trail them. They're left in the dark with flashlights and Jubei's ghostly flames to guide them.

[break][break] "It's all about technique," he says. The Doublade falls from his grasp, replaced by a dagger. A Rattata scurries up the ground ahead of him and leaps to claw itself in Jayden's flesh, and the Admin swiftly slices a line up it's belly and throat. Blood and guts fall to the ground, causing the Rocket to grimace.

[break][break] Sure enough, they are headed deeper into basement. Just as he does, his head tilts at the other's question.

[break][break] A gleam of his excitement in his gaze, too; Jayden also enjoyed talking about his swords. "I suppose it's the only swords I've known," he muses. "Grabbing the hilt of the blade like this - " he says, showing off a single-handed grip like so. "Allows for a broader swing."

[break][break] His Banette - Midna - resurfaces from the floor, releasing a GUNK SHOT towards the remaining vermin.

Expressive as this creature is under most circumstances, he's quiet as he listens. Like a dog sitting on its hind before a master, tail wagging behind him, he takes in this enlightened human's wisdom. Where others might show disgust at the cut that ended that rat's life, the dog dissects the blow with a clinical air. Conclusions about the anatomy of these creatures are drawn based on the way they die from that cut.[break]
"Huh." Hitoshi mimics the way the other man holds his blade, switching his posture to match. It's a perfect replica. The benefit of having no style of your own is an incredible ability to adapt.[break]
One of the rats, angered by the death of their fellows, jumps at Hitoshi. It's quicker than the eye can see. Raw speed is matched by technique. Imitating his superior's cut, he cleaves where he thinks the throat will be. It falls in the midst of its charge, twitching on the floor.[break]
"Right on!" Raising his sword in a cheer, he walks on, wondering when the one with a special coat, the boss, will show itself.[break]
"Western swords are pretty interesting, I'll say that. Feels like they can double as a spear almost." The dog points at the double-edged sword, leading up to its tip in the middle. "It's way harder to thrust with a curved sword like this one." Demonstrating his point, he jabs the blade at a nearby rat corpse.[break]
"Clumsy. Dumb. Hmm, maybe I should try out that broadsword Pokemon."

[break][break] They move through the floor with ease, the sounds of nothing but the echoes of rats squealing through the air as they forcibly embraced death.

[break][break] "Curved blades have their uses too, I'm sure." Jayden knew well enough, having trained with them before, even though he did appreciate the duality that his Doublade provided him. "I can show you some of my collection when we get back if you like."

Inoue is a word that barely registers in his mind. His sword pierces another rat's skull as he turns and quirks his head. Funny, these business types are the only people in Hoenn who stick to the formality he remembers from Johto.[break]
"You can call me Hitoshi." You can call me are pretty words drilled into him by being around Yumi. She has all the social graces. Hitoshi has very few, but he learned enough from here to adapt. In the world above, this man is his boss. His direct boss, as only an idiot would use a blade for anything other than offense.[break]
"I picked it up here and there." He muses, remembering his past. Years spent as a stray dog on the streets of Goldenrod, fighting to survive. "I just picked up a sword one day. Stole it from someone's house. Started swinging it. It felt right. I studied some pictures in books to help my technique."[break]
"All the old schools in Johto suck. They're sticklers for form, poise, all that crap. Do whatever works. Just get the blade through the big organs. Anything else is unnecessary." He stretches his vocabulary to its limits for this man. Swords have that effect on him.

[break][break] Jayden knew that, on a technicality, he could call Hitoshi Inoue whatever he liked. Such was the difference in power — but occasionally he liked to give his grunts the perception of choice. It was what he would have wanted for himself.

[break][break] While he waits for an answer, the Rocket Admin swings his sword in turn to the various beasts that stand in their path. A WIDE GUARD ressurrects when several rats come scurry at him, leaping with teeth and claws. Then when the barrier falls, he slashes his Doublade into the skulls of three more.

[break][break] "Interesting," he said as they step away from the sea of carcasses, deeper into the tunnel. Where the sound of something sinister whispers into the dark. "I learned similarly — from action, not inaction." Kanto regularly pit them against enemies to dispose of. There was no shortage of flesh, there. "For someone who is self-taught, you have skill."

[break][break] Then he stills, eyes narrowed into the dark.

[break][break] "Wait. There's something there."

[break][break] Something big.

There's always something big to kill. Hitoshi flicks his amber eyes to Jubei as something crawls out of the darkness. That's got to be the biggest Raticate he's ever seen. Its fur has a strange red color to it, marking it as special. Special things can die as well as ordinary things.[break]
"Yooo! Self-taught swordsmen represent!" He flicks his blade forward and Jubei lunges. The ghostly blades cross in an x-slash that does little except set up Hitoshi's follow-up strike. It's an iaijutsu strike, his blade sheathed and then rapidly redrawn in a harsh slash across the rat's face. Pokemon are made of hardy stuff, so it's nowhere near enough to kill a creature of this size, but it shaves flesh from its head. The skull beneath is especially hard.[break]
"All those old styles are taurosshit, man." He speaks as if the world hasn't already moved on. In a world of Pokemon and guns, this swordsman and he are nothing but relics. They're no different from the beautiful swords collecting dust on antique store shelves. A sheathed blade is a useless blade.[break]
Strike by strike, he endeavors to not be a useless thing.[break][break]
"Say, you get vacation days from your Rocket thing? We could go beat up some dojos sometime."

[break][break] Jayden's gaze narrows as he witnesses the strike for himself, watching as the Alolan Raticate lets out a shout of pain as the attack strikes him. But Jayden doesn't move - not yet. He recognizes the Raticate almost immediately and sees him for what it is.

[break][break] He'd fought it enough times as a grunt, knowing exactly what Killian Decker made it capable of.

[break][break] FOCUS ENERGY has the Raticate glowing with power, just as several more Alolan Rattata spill from it's side. Jayden's hold tightens around the hilt of his blade. A SPRINGTIDE STORM ripples past the blade, tossing several of the Rattata on their backs with squeals of pain.

[break][break] "Does the League take vacation days? I think not."

[break][break] He releases his blade's grip. Both Doublade swords fly up behind him, glowing with light, before suddenly AERIAL ACE plunges into the Raticate's back on two different sides.

[break][break] "Cast the finishing blow, Inoue."

The dog marvels at the springtide storm. He's seen half a dozen trainers use this move by now, but none can match the elegance of the swordsman before him. Watching him is like watching someone from one of his old samurai flicks. Hitoshi practically feels a proverbial tail wag when the blow is struck.[break]
The rat is sent reeling. Hitoshi has stars in his eyes. Whatever history this beast has, Hitoshi does not remember it. All he knows is that it's just another target - one someone he has come to admire as a Senpai in short order wishes dead.[break]
"Sure thing, Senpai." Hitoshi dubs him with a title. Titles carry more meaning than names for most people in this creature's world. His katana finds purchase in the creature's throat. Piercing beneath the tough hide, the flesh beneath contorts. Passageways are disrupted. Death comes swiftly.[break]
Their leader is dead. This monster will trouble the patrons above no more.[break]
"Let's practice sometime...none of the scrubs in the grunt barracks put up a good fight!"
