at some point, once team rocket had grown bored of playing with their food, annalise was moved elsewhere. discreetly. all she remembers is the darkness of a blindfold, the roughness of someone dragging her from her cell, and the nauseating feeling in her stomach as she fought back against restraining hands. [break][break]
but, unlike her imagination had promised her in those fleeting moments of her digging her heels in and hoarsely begging for her life, they hadn't taken her out to kill her. not yet.[break][break]she's still caged, but it's somewhere new. she can tell at least that much because she's had nothing but time to memorize every hairline fracture in the cement of her old cell. these four walls are still unfamiliar to her, but she's quickly losing her grasp on how long it's been since they brought her here.

in a strange way, she hopes her captor will return. he talks to her, feeds her breadcrumbs of knowledge of the outside world — everything she's become starved for down here. it's the reason she perks up at the sound of footsteps down the hall. just as much as it's the reason she recesses away when a smaller rocket comes into her line of sight.

"leave me alone." [break][break]it's meant to be an order, but her voice comes out as a toothless whisper. she cuts a meek figure in the corner of the cage: skinny, filthy, bruised. a closer resemblance to a black market pokemon than a former head ranger.

"Though you could use the company." comes automatically, an electronic voice. Neon stands at the edge of Annalise's world, her meal for the day in hand. A small welfare check. It's almost sickening how laid low she was. He only knew her from his interactions with her every so often on Tik Tok and hanging out outside of work. She was fun, bubbly. Often times she matched Mint's own energy very well. Now here? She's a husk of all that. He hadn't looked into how bad her torture was. [break][break]

Once she was released, he didn't want to see it every time he looked at her as his civilian persona. And why burden himself with that anyway? He opens the door, stepping in and locking the cell himself before setting down the food and bottled water at the center of the room. He squeezes the water bottle and turns it upside down. "Fresh, untampered." he explained before gesturing at the tray, covered in a better than usual kind of meal. [break][break]

"You were looking a little pale, so they authorized me something better this time." he said before taking a step back from her and watching her from the wall of the cell.

annalise takes a guarded glance at the tray in his hands as he enters her cell, but it's his face that captures her gaze during his short demonstration. she's not seeking his eyes, not appealing to his humanity through a stare — she's looking at herself reflected in his visor, trying to make sense of the unfamiliar girl staring back.

the crinkle of plastic startles her, diverts her attention to his hands with a snap of her eyes in their direction. and then she actually sees it: food. hunger overrides any sense or logic left in her. she presses her hands against the back of the cell wall and pushes herself into an unsteady trajectory towards the center of the cell.

the masked person still lurks in her peripheral, but their threat level feels infinitely less important to gracelessly choking down anything edible on the tray. it's the best thing she's ever tasted, she thinks. then, it's sickeningly rich. then, it could be poisoned.

the realization makes her start spitting out what she hasn't yet swallowed.

He leans on the wall, watching his old mutual. It's kind of sickening she's here. He never would've imagined of all people, her to take hostage. But he doesn't fight what the higher ups want. [break][break]

He gins to move in when she chokes, stopping halfway when she's spitting it all back out. "Hey now- I said it's untampered." he said, watching to make sure she wasn't about to suffocate on her own dinner. [break][break]

"You have use. Otherwise you wouldn't even be getting a last meal." he said, hands shifting into his pockets as he stared intently, electric eyes unblinking. "You wouldn't have even seen me. Quick, fast, and in a hurry." he added before pointing at the food.

his voice startles her. she snaps her head up to look at him, fingers stilled inside her mouth, and catches the sorry sight of herself again. this time, she knows its her — a fact that makes her lower her eyes back to the half-eaten bits of her meal. she takes her fingers away from her lips as he speaks, wiping them on her pantleg in several furtive, nervous swipes.

it's true. if they really wanted to kill her, they would and could. but, unlike what he tells her, she doesn't believe she holds any use to rocket, especially not now. the meals, the moving her around to different places — it's a drain on their resources. maybe he's just lying so he doesn't have to force poisoned food down her throat.

she thinks back to some faraway time when she told Felix Gallagher she had no other choice than to be stuck in a cell. it's the same here, now, with this food.

at his command, she eats, slower this time. tiny bites preceded by a tentative sniff. pushing food around the plate to make it look like she's eating more than she really has. her throat feels dry, but she ignores the water.
