By day, Cycling Road on Route 110 was a beautiful, seaside thoroughfare that, in sunny weather, promised a picturesque view of the ocean. By night, however, the few cyclists traveling between Mauville and Slateport would discover a very different atmosphere: one dominated by local gangs of the two cities.[break][break]

On one such night, Marshall wove his way between the crowds of other gangsters. He wore the signature white jacket, embroidered with the two-headed dog of Orthrus on the back. Underneath, though, a plain T-shirt and loose cargo pants complemented his designer sneakers. He blended in seamlessly with the other young men and women, all members of other gangs who'd come with their motorcycles to race or spectate.[break][break]

As much as he loved to ride, however, Marshall hadn't brought his own bike that night. No, he had come as an observer of the event and a silent representative of Orthrus. And he wasn't alone, either.[break][break]

"So, whatcha think of this hype energy, Deimos?" he asked his companion.[break][break]

Marshall grinned, eyes shining with the hunger for adrenaline. The two men leaned against the barricade separating the bystanders from the road. In the distance, engines revved as riders prepared to race. Conversation buzzed around them.[break][break]

"Really makes you feel alive, don't it?"

Dei had been there for a little while before meeting up with Marshall Slade. These were his favorite non-Orthrus events. Seeing those bikes rev up and take off was always thrilling.[break][break]

Usually, Dei would share in Marsh's excitement and thrill. Tonight was a little different.[break][break]

Even when Dei wore his lovely white jacket, his reputation preceded him. Gangs didn't always get along. But they knew enough about Dei to allow them close to the bikes. He wasn't above last minute 'check ups' even for rivals, if only so the beautiful bikes didn't crash ass. It would be a damn shame to see those metal chassis all warped and fucked up.[break][break]

But this time, Dei's eyes were firmly on one racer when Marsh chatted him up.[break][break]

"That guy-" He pointed to a scrawny guy, someone unfamiliar. An oddity. Dei had never seen the bike, either. But he knew enough to know something was wrong with it. "Is pissin' up and trying to say it's rain."[break][break]

Green eyes turned to Marsh, a brow raised and a sneer tugging at his lips.[break][break]

"Wanna give him a good ole Orthrus Welcome after the race, Marsh?"

Marshall's eyebrows rose into his forehead as he looked in the direction Deimos pointed. Sure enough, the lanky stranger spelled trouble with the "fuck you" aura radiating from him. Marshall hadn't seen his motorcycle either; it looked cobbled together, some kind of monstrosity on two wheels.[break][break]

A seriousness fell over Marshall, the kind that meant deadly business. "Yeah, let's do that."[break][break]

Shouts from the race's organizers called riders to the starting line. The crowd exploded into motion and sound as several motorcycles — including the stranger's — lined up. The air filled with noise as a dozen engines revved and buzzed like angry Beedrill.[break][break]

The referee's flag waved, and the bikes took off, dark shapes speeding like bullets down Cycling Road.

And they were off.[break][break]

Dei snorted and leaned against the fence, fingers curling in the links. Usually such a pretty sight- but it was sullied by the dark smoke that trailed over the raceway. It was that bike. Even from here, when it had started up, Deimos could catch a whiff of something acrid and dead. This wasn't just gas being guzzled.[break][break]

But he glances over his shoulder at Marshall Slade and gives a toothy grin. If anyone has his back, he knows that Marsh does.[break][break]

Wasting no time, Dei moves down the fence and to one of the ledges. It was kind of a dicey fall, you aimed wrong and you would splatter on a concrete sidewalk rather than plush grass, but he was old hat at this. Legs dipping over first, Dei hopped off the ledge and braced when he hit the ground. It always kind of hurt, making him grit his teeth and his knees throbbed. It would be the fastest shortcut to reach the finish line if you didn't have a pokemon that could carry you.[break][break]

Brushing himself off and checking the jacket, Dei started towards the finish line; he trusted that Marsh would make his own way there. Be it following or a much safer alternative.[break][break]

Sure enough, the weirdo with the strange bike was already way ahead of everyone else. It just made Dei frown as his eyes traced the guy from the distance.[break][break]

"When he lands, can you grab him? I wanna check that ugly bitch he's riding."

Marshall stood with Deimos at the fence. When the other man moved away, he knew exactly where he was going: the finish line. A heartbeat later, Marshall followed, not bothering to use his Pokémon to make the journey safer.[break][break]

If Deimos was going to risk a fall, Marshall would be there to catch him, just in case.[break][break]

At the finish line, the men peered up the road. Sure enough, the stranger on the strange bike was in the lead. Only when Deimos made his request did Marshall dig into a pocket for two Pokéballs.[break][break]

"You got it, buddy," he said, opening the capsules. His Archeops and Rhyperior appeared in a flash of light, the former taking wing at once. "Blitz, snatch that guy in the front off his motorcycle as soon as he crosses. Camber, stop his bike."[break][break]

Soon enough, the rider reached them, zooming over the finish line — only to run straight into the Rhyperior. Camber snatched the vehicle with ease in his enormous claws. Meanwhile, Blitz descended, lifting the strange rider away and dropping him at Marshall's feet.[break][break]

Marshall crouched and seized him by the shirt. His grin was wolfish, fangs bared in a display of dominance. "Yo."

The man, the idiot snarled right back. He was squirrely and scrawny, clearly not used to the kind of scrapping that Marshall Slade and Dei were.[break][break]

"Let me go!" He growled, trying to wriggle out of Marshall's grasp. "You can't do this! Hey!" He turned his head to try and catch the attention of the other people by the finish line. Of other racer's as they crossed the line after. Yet, everyone involved just turned away. They knew better than to fuck with Orthrus.[break][break]

Dei gave Camber a thankful pat on the back when the Rhyperior placed the bike back down. He was quick to turn it off, hissing as the metal of the thing seemed like it might melt on the spot. It was running hot- far hotter than a bike should be.[break][break]

Thick work gloves were pulled out of Dei's back pocket. Pulling them on, he set to work tearing the bike to pieces. In search of... whatever the hell was wrong with it.

"I think we can do whatever we fuckin' like," Marshall said coolly, hauling the stranger up by his collar alone. Camber stomped over to add the promise of physical punishment to his trainer's words.[break][break]

"Now, you're gonna tell me your name, where you're from, and whatcha got inside this bike," he continued.[break][break]

"I got nothin' to say to you," said the scrawny man.[break][break]

The Rhyperior rumbled, the menacing sound like stone grinding against stone. Marshall's captive gulped as a fresh sheen of sweat appeared on his forehead.[break][break]

The Orthrus second-in-command kept his eyes on the unknown rider while he called over to his companion. "You find anything yet, Deimos?"

Molten hot oil poured on the ground about the time Marshall Slade asked his question. It hissed and sizzled on the spot, darkening the rock. Deimos hissed and jumped back, the part he had in his hand clattering to the ground; didn't want to burn his damn toes off.[break][break]

Yet, when it settled, he inched closer and squat down to get a good look at it. It was glowing oddly.[break][break]

"Yea, I have no fuckin' clue. His gas is like... mixed with some weird shit. Not nitro." Turning to the bike itself, he ran his hands over some odd spots with extra metal.[break][break]

"This thing is fuckin' hot, Marsh. Our friend expected it, too, from the look of his handiwork." A click of the tongue.[break][break]

"I wanna take this back home and get a better look when it's cool."[break][break]

There was another set of wiggling from the guy.

"Keep your hands off my bike!" Indignant, still, as if this guy had legs to stand on. Deimos just shot him a nasty look and grabbed for the bike again, piecing it back together and trying to save whatever was left of the weird gas inside.

"Your ride was about to blow your dick off. We're doing you a favor."

Marshall frowned, though he didn't once look away from the scrawny rider they'd captured.[break][break]

"Weird shit?" he echoed, skepticism clear in his voice. Not that he doubted Deimos; no, quite the opposite. He turned his question to the guy in his hands. "What weird shit you puttin' in your engine, buddy?"[break][break]

"Nothin'," said the man, stubbornly.[break][break]

Marshall rolled his eyes. "Uh huh, yeah. Nothin'. We'll see about that." He threw the stranger onto the ground, uninterested in hurting him. Punishment was reserved for people who broke the rules; as far as he was aware, no rules had been broken.[break][break]

Yet.[break][break]

"Get outta my sight," Marshall snarled. "I better not see you ridin' any of these shitty bikes anymore around here, either."[break][break]

The other man didn't move for a moment. Then Camber roared, and he scrambled backward several feet before climbing to his feet and dashing off.
