THE ULTRA CRATER IS A LARGE EXPANSE UNDERNEATH A YELLOW SKY. In between thick, almost impassable jungles, craters filled with green fields and alien plants lay. What appears to be metal pipe-like roots grow out the rock of crater walls. Geysers dot this alien landscape, occasionally expelling shrieking steam.[break][break]

The world is frequented by earthquakes, causing odd red monoliths of rock to quake throughout the realm. Oddly, the Ultra Thicket possesses very fertile soil. In the distance, a large mountainous expanse can be seen, though the range does not seem too high.

okay, so maybe she had to do a lot of ass-kicking to get here, but it's well worth it. just stepping through the portal itself had been a magical, incredible experience. she is nearly bouncing on her feet by the time they're thirty minutes in. she's perhaps not being as careful as she should be, but her excitement always has and always will get the best of her.

wanting to do a good job, though - because her performance here is going to dictate if she's up to snuff for other missions like this - she immediately starts pulling things out of her pack.

under ranger orders, she's supposed to bring back some of the soil and plant matter here so league scientists can study it back in hoenn. so kirin stands by while she dons some gloves and goes about carefully procuring samples.

"wow, this place really is so cool," she says, smiling up at her other two companions.

Leyon read the review of his previous expedition with a bright pink face mask, hair wrapped up in a hair towel with a cute little tie and togepi pattern.[break][break]

"I'll fuckin' show him."[break][break]

Days later he finds himself walking into the crater yet again. This time with some young thing who has so much energy he could gag up a fairy wind and faelan foxgrove, somebody he'd met before and had no idea was a ranger.[break][break]

At first, he just eyed Foxgrove as if to say 'you' and then let it be. Just kept on walking forward. So far he was on his best behavior. Helping, stopping, protecting, being overall decently agreeable for the most part. He glances over at Fox, arching a perfectly - to his standards - plucked brow at the man.[break][break]

"What's wrong? Getting winded, Fox Boy?"[break][break]

He's determined to be the best guide to the crater that he can be. The girl's collecting soil samples for their 'task' of being there and so far, that's all Leyon cares about. Get the samples and get the fuck out before some kinda bug critters come around trying to eat him.[break][break]

Fox’s last experiences in the Ultra spaces had not been ideal. Flashes of Nihilego toxins and the crush of his Magmar’s skull under a ghostly hoof rise to the front of his mind, though he pushes them away with practiced fortitude. [break][break]

It doesn’t help that he’s heading into the relative unknown with children. [break][break]

The girl-- saskia volosenkova -- seems alright-- energetic and bright, and reminds Fox a lot of himself around that age. It endears her to him in a way that is slightly alarming, so he decides to ignore it. [break][break]

But then. [break][break]

“leyon cœur ,” Fox draws the word out, mouth hidden under his rebreather, melodic and slightly raspy. Fan-fucking-tastic. [break][break]

Saskia stoops to start taking samples and Fox stands protectively at her six, rifle held firmly in his arms. He drags one finger over the safety, knowing full well that the gun will do little to protect them against the Nihilegos and what-ever-else are hiding in the jungle. He’d brought it to defend against the chance of Rocket interference. [break][break]

Still. Though today he’s mostly security, in his heart, he will always be a scientist. [break][break]

“Very cool,” he agrees with the young woman, reaching out a hand to brush his fingertips over a soft, waxy leaf-- a giant, possibly prehistoric asplenium, by the looks of it. [break][break]

Leyon turns around to take a jab at him and Fox notices movement behind the blonde. Practiced instincts have him snatching a Pokeball off his belt and hurling it over Leyon’s head, where his Duosion breaks free and pops a protect to defend him from the massive jaws that threaten to snap closed around him. [break][break]

The protect bubble holds steady, and the Carnivine snarls, toxic saliva rolling in huge rivulets over the iridescent surface as it laves its tongue around the barrier, vine-like body writhing in the forest beyond. [break][break]

Fox touches Saskia gently on the shoulder to hurry her along. “Time to go!”

the animosity between the two goes completely over saskia's head. well, maybe not completely, but it seems harmless enough that she would much rather ignorant it. these samples are super duper important to the success of the mission. two big-headed boys' egos? not so much.

kirin's massive horns turn just before faelan reacts to something around them. his unsettled nickering makes saskia look up, but she's still carefully cutting around roots with a scalpel. her dex is on the ground, field instructions open, and the added pressure sure isn't helping.

the clipping finally comes free right as faelan brushes her shoulder. saskia stands, fumbling with the vial. she loops it into her belt hook and yanks up her pack, tossing her dex inside. kirin's sudden bleat of warning helps her sidestep the vine that snakes out towards her.

but in missing her, it aims to encircle faelan's instead.

"oh, sweet arceus, watch out!"

There is half a second where Leyon just about protests. It is just after Fox throws a ball by his head, the whistling of the air as it passes is what causes Leyon's mouth to open for a protest. It is the sound of a chomp and the light and sound of the protect that causes Leyon to flinch and turn around, shutting right up.[break][break]

An urge to flick the plant up is smothered by his survival instinct, which has him running toward Saskia and Fox while pulling out his own loveball in protection.[break][break]

A cleffa is what emerges, right on Leyon's head. Her little hands grab his hair for stability as she eyes the nasty plant that tried to eat her blondie. A wave of psychic energy moves in a pulse toward the creature, all while Leyon's bending down and picking up whatever he can, nearly including the girl.[break][break]

"You got enough dirt yet? I'd like ta get the fuck outta here," he glares back at their threat before raising his voice to yell at it. "Before I rethink my vegan mindset!!"

leyon cœur moves past him as Fox strides forward, stalwartly putting himself between the gigantic Carnivine and his two partners. His noble attempt at defense is interrupted when a vine tightens around his ankle-- he feels it a half second too late and his leap clear just succeeds in helping invert him faster.

“Phage--,” he spits out, hand shooting for his Pokeball belt. The Duosion is recalled and a Lurantis takes its place, slicing through the tendril gripping him. “Fuck!” he falls straight down, ditching the rifle in favor of twisting onto his side to land bluntly on his shoulder.

The Cleffa’s psychic knocks the beast back and buys Fox enough time to get to his feet and break into a spring, snagging both Saskia and Leyon’s arms as he pulls them away.

“If-- you-- eat-- Carnivine-- aren’t-- you-- still-- vegan?” he asks, between panting breaths, because he’s unable to ignore the comment. “Because-- it’s a-- plant?”
[break][break]
Shut up, he tells himself, mentally, shut up, shut up, shut up--
[break][break]
--his foot comes down on a shallow crust of earth that breaks beneath his weight and he pitches forward, pushing Saskia and Leyon away as a geyser of hot, sulfuric air shoots skyward. Ducking into a roll, he comes up and freezes in a crouch on the spot.

“Careful where you step.”

and then she's, quite literally, being manhandled by both boys as they try to escape their sudden ambush. kirin doesn't take kindly to saskia being jostled about, but she calms her with a few hurried yelps, insisting that they focus on the situation at hand. she scrambles alongside them, casting a look of disbelief at faelan as he gets a quip in at leyon.

sasky comes to a stumbling halt. kirin's hooves kick up dirt as she stops too and then she canters in a circle, clearly distressed.

the good news is that the tendrils behind them withdraw. but the pokemon wait for them in the treeline, festering and hungry. so now they're stuck between a rock and a hard place.

she looks down. her hands are shaking. she can't even step away to catch her breath, for fear that another geyser will erupt. what would papa do? or greyson? her shoulders tense, thoughts getting away from her.

why doesn't she know what to do? she's trained for this, right? these situations that get out of hand, where she's meant to be a professional. her breath quickens of its own volition and she stays rooted to the spot, face flushed. kirin bleats worriedly.

"i - um - what - do...we do?"

Saskia didn't seem to have an ounce of herself put together. Her hands were shaking and she looked like she was about to crumble. He knew what she was feeling, how this place could mess with somebody the first time in. His own reaction during his first adventure had been, well ... an explosive and frankly murderous rage.[break][break]

Fox, however, he ignored. Because they needed to focus on getting out alive.[break][break]

"We can argue later." There was apparently going to be a later. "Right now we gotta get the fuck outta.... oh hang on."[break][break]

Taking the cleffa from his head, he pointed Fae right at the geyser and smirked. "Alright my dude, when I say, give that geyser a fucking blast."[break][break]

The little cleffa started to gather energy before himself, hands collected in front of him along with the energy. The attacking pokémon got closer, and closer, until just as they were over the geyser Leyon gave his cleffa a squeeze. The charging moonblast went pulsing from Leyon and cleffa, sending the two backwards onto Leyon's ass as the geyser was hit and erupted, sending the opposing pokémon flying into the air.[break][break]

"Yeah! Take that you sorry fuckers!" His cleffa gave a shout, seeming to say the same as him but in a much cuter tone.

they end up saving her bacon. and she is so grateful for it, really. 90% of her is. but there is that small, teeny tiny part of her, that is jealous. envious that in a moment of crisis, they're able to push through. so her smile is struggling and she is trying not to deflate or let her thoughts eat her alive.

with that blast, the rest of the pokemon tailing them fade back into the bamboo forest. saskia reaches back to kirin for comfort, fingers knotting in her soft chest fur.

"sorry 'bout that, girl," she mumbles. kirin butts her cheek and sasky follows with, "i promise i'm okay. i'm good now."

louder, she says, "thanks, leyon. um, so i guess we should move forward? i'll follow your lead."

He knows, though he would die before admitting it, that leyon cœur is right, they can argue and be flippant later. Later. He picks that word up and wraps it in gauze and files it away for just such an occasion.

Fox stayed still, not wanting to step and break the fragile crust of the earth and get covered in noxious, scalding sulfuric fumes.

Leyon did not have the same reservations, and he lifted his poor Cleffa up like a bazooka and--

“Wait, do--,”

Fox had to lunge out of the way as the moonblast set off a chain reaction of explosions-- all the geysers in the area interconnected, deep down, by channels of subterranean water and steam. A fount of boiling hot air rushed across his legs and he bit down on his cheek hard enough to taste blood to stop from screaming.

Still, it did the job; the Carnivine that had been trailing them went blasting off again.
[break][break]
Fox hurried to pick himself up.
[break][break]
“Miss Volosenkova is right,” he says, gritting his teeth. “Let’s keep going.” He’d lost his gun, which was fine. What was it going to do here?

He set Bián at the rear of the party and took point to push through the thick jungle and forward-- though it wasn’t long until the jungle came to a dead stop, and Fox was looking out over a deep-cut valley. The vegetation within was all withered, burnt, and brown, as though a great fire had come through-- but not a cleansing fire, but something horrible and noxious.

“Through or around?” he asked the group. “Around will take longer, and we may be accosted by more gigantic Pokemon. Through will be quick, and there’s less cover for enemies; but we also don’t know what made it like this.”

miss volosenkova is right. sasky shifts uncomfortably, but appreciates it more than he knows. she's still doubting herself, and kirin no doubt senses it, but at least she has her breathing under control now. and with the rest of her team, they'll be okay.

she'll have time later to think about her mistakes on this mission. and then all she can do is learn from them.

nibbling her lip, she looks over the expanse of burnt-up flora. the field doesn't look inviting in the least, but agreeing with leyon will make her seem vapid. she's saved though, because as she's deliberating on how to cast her vote, the ground in front of them almost opens up.

steam and noxious fluid spews upward from holes in the ground. metallic tips of something dangerous twist upward.

kirin turns in a circle and stamps the ground, urging them away and into the forest's fringes.

"we'll just have to take our chances in the forest! i trust you," she says to both of her companions as she starts to flee.
