Memphis wasn’t quite sure what to think about being called cute. So in true Gen Z fashion, he just left Frank on read.[break][break]

Because as he sat at the Paldean restaurant waiting for Frank Caffey to show up, he suddenly realized something. Namely while looking through the messages.[break][break]

This… is a date. Is this a date?? I think it’s a date.[break][break]

He wasn’t even sure what to do. He thought about texting and asking saskia volosenkova but what would she think of him for actually thinking it was a date? Plus, he wasn’t even sure she knew he was … not straight.[break][break]

The thought of leaving crossed his mind, twice, but then he’d feel guilty for just ditching. So he decided to steel himself for being as awkward as fucking possible while trying very hard to enjoy himself.[break][break]

Frank arrived just minutes after Memphis' moment of anxiety — unbeknownst to the older man, of course. The businessman entered the restaurant as if he owned the place. An easy smile graced his face as she greeted the hostess. He spotted Memphis within seconds and departed from the woman with a casual wink.[break][break]

"Sorry I'm late," Frank said to his acquaintance, not sounding sorry at all. "I didn't keep you waiting long, did I?"[break][break]

He snatched up the menu without waiting for Memphis' answer. Violet eyes scanned the familiar pictures and names of the dishes before Frank flipped to the drinks menu.[break][break]

"Do you drink, by the way?"

"not long at all," because lying to make others feel more comfortable was a bad habit he wasn't going to be in the mindset to break anytime soon; namely while so nervous. "so you're good."[break][break]

there's a small silence and memphis finds he's adjusting his seating in the chair. he eyes the menu and picks it up, thinking that frank's so relaxed and so casual and he must seem like a ridget piece of clothing that was startched too strongly before being ironed.[break][break]

he's asked if he drinks and memphis has to think twice, three times, about that.[break][break]

"i haven't tried anything yet..." because on his twenty-first birthday he was kicked out of his parents house and hadn't thought about it. "do you have recommendations?"[break][break]

maybe it could get rid of his nerves for him.

Frank glanced up. His eyebrows rose into his head and his mouth fell open slightly in surprise. Memphis did look young, but most people got to taste alcohol on their eighteenth birthday — legal drinking age.[break][break]

Was Memphis eighteen? Surely he was older than that?[break][break]

"Well, if that's the case, that all depends on your taste. Do you like sweet? Bitter? Smoky?" Frank paused to consider other flavor profiles, especially the kind available in a hole-in-the-wall Paldean restaurant.[break][break]

"Hmm, something sweet would be a good start," he decided without waiting for Memphis' answer. Raising his hand, he flagged down a passing waitress. "A pitcher of sangria for the table, please."
