"not long at all," because lying to make others feel more comfortable was a bad habit he wasn't going to be in the mindset to break anytime soon; namely while so nervous. "so you're good."[break][break]

there's a small silence and memphis finds he's adjusting his seating in the chair. he eyes the menu and picks it up, thinking that frank's so relaxed and so casual and he must seem like a ridget piece of clothing that was startched too strongly before being ironed.[break][break]

he's asked if he drinks and memphis has to think twice, three times, about that.[break][break]

"i haven't tried anything yet..." because on his twenty-first birthday he was kicked out of his parents house and hadn't thought about it. "do you have recommendations?"[break][break]

maybe it could get rid of his nerves for him.

never has memphis had the privilage of hatching a pokémon. even minx he managed to get from a wild encounter, his very first of course. it was also sort of an accident. he wasn't even sure, and still isn't sure, how she ended up in the streets where he could find her...[break][break]

either way, he looks to the pokémon in question, minx, and then to the one that blasted him.[break][break]

clearly talking about any kind of politics was something that would make sven either uncomfortable or passionate. maybe he just needed somebody to talk to about it. good thing memphis was a third party, to a point. he didn't much agree that either side should be excused of wrong doings, but he's also not naive. the world, he knows well, is a grey place. black and white ideals will only get somebody killed.[break][break]

or so he believes. it's partly the reason his mother and father were so adament he go and see the world, to see their 'truth.' that there was more darkness than light and that's why the truth of arceus' gospel needed shared.[break][break]

gag, he thought, but didn't say. after all, sven would likely give him a look since none of those thoughts made it out of his mouth. instead, he happily accepted the subject change.[break][break]

"i'm just exploring for the most part." freddy takes his swarms and motions toward the dinosaur the number of enemies that had fallen to those sharp claws; bragging. "i mean, any kind of knowledge i can get is good. meteor falls has always intrigued me. something about the clan of people that used to abide here has always facsinated me, but perhaps because they were once the original avatars."

the idea of a mummy causes memphis' spine to tighten. his shoulders become tense and he tries to think through several ways he can accept the notion of a mummy. maybe if it's a yamask or seven, yeah.[break][break]

but an actual mummy? he'd be both fascinated and feel a little ashamed, defacing a tomb with a body in it; without the correct tools to take the mummy back to the museum, of course.[break][break]

"i mean, it'd be a big discovery. maybe. hopefully?"[break][break]

nerves show in his tone as he lets out a soft laugh, though a tinge of fear of the unknown tickles at the edges of it.

Mid-bite, Memphis’ body froze. The sound of Saskia’s name coming from somebody he never would have thought knew her—only because he doesn’t think people he knows know each other.[break][break]

”Saskia, as in, saskia volosenkova?”[break][break]

Her name didn’t roll off his tongue very naturally, but he was trying hard to learn how to pronounce it. She gave him lessons but he probably butchered it.[break][break]

Just like that, all thought of his pokémon being out of their balls, or the food, was gone from his mind. He was wholly focused on the fact that two of his friends knew each other.[break][break]

Why? Because he was raised to think such things were more important than things like food.[break][break]

Ah, church people. And the drama that comes with it. Gossip’s a bitch.

A nod is given at the notion of wanting to figure out ‘what’s going on in this place.’ He figured that sven korolev meant Hoenn in general. Who didn’t these days?[break][break]

There’s mention of Sven going to the museum and Memphis perks up a bit, smiling.[break][break]

”We’ve got lots of information on the happenings past and present around Hoenn if it reflects with any of Hoenn’s previous happenings.”[break][break]

Which was true. A plethora of knowledge.[break][break]

”Oh,” the way Sven changed when he spoke caught Memphis off guard; so much for tact. “Uh yeah, we’re super careful. Really strong security. Mr. GIDEON GRAVES has a great system in place, keeping everything safe and sound.”[break][break]

While the topic didn’t make Memphis nervous, it was the cold demeanor toward Rocket in general. If there was anything that Memphis was blindly aware of, it was that Rocket and League were both a gray area, just like the Church of Arceus.[break][break]

Nobody is as they seem; people are just a walking definition of cause and effect. Neither inherently good or bad. But then again, religious trauma will do that to a person. Open their eyes to the grey of the world earlier than they need.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Freddy’s found a collection of zubat, beginning his little K.O. party with them by attacking the group of them at once and raking his numbers up that way.

Memphis wasn’t quite sure what to think about being called cute. So in true Gen Z fashion, he just left Frank on read.[break][break]

Because as he sat at the Paldean restaurant waiting for Frank Caffey to show up, he suddenly realized something. Namely while looking through the messages.[break][break]

This… is a date. Is this a date?? I think it’s a date.[break][break]

He wasn’t even sure what to do. He thought about texting and asking saskia volosenkova but what would she think of him for actually thinking it was a date? Plus, he wasn’t even sure she knew he was … not straight.[break][break]

Arceus, he couldn’t even think the words.[break][break]

The thought of leaving crossed his mind, twice, but then he’d feel guilty for just ditching. So he decided to steel himself for being as awkward as fucking possible while trying very hard to enjoy himself.[break][break]

Because this is why he came to Hoenn. To be himself. To embrace who he was instead of trying to suffocate himself into changing.

Sven was, in fact, the guy who was nice to his pokémon and they listened to him in return… and bullied him because he was nice. Memphis was that guy to people, but not to his pokémon. He was a bit of a stern mother to his pokémon.[break][break]

Most of them listened to him only because they had a mutual understanding and respect for each other. Which was why he didn’t have a plethora of pokémon.[break][break]

”That’s alright, I’m gonna keep them put away. For the most part, I don’t really let them free roam. Makes me anxious.”[break][break]

The explanation is given as Minx had just about jumped off his lap. She stops though, moving over to curl against him to try and settle his social anxiety nerves.[break][break]

”As for discoveries, I haven’t really had any. I mean, none that have been worthy of putting in the museum yet.”[break][break]

Each item of food was devoured while he spoke, but he was careful not to speak with food in his mouth. Just between bites, letting Minx have little pieces here and there. She was far too picky to eat anything in abundance.

The tension in Memphis’ shoulders disappears when Sven tells him it’s okay that he rambled. Sometimes he can’t stop himself, he just blurts out the information in his brain. Most of the time people don’t even ask for it. Half the time he doesn’t realize people his age aren’t as educated as he is. Because not everybody spent their entire lives locked away studying to become a priest…and then bailed.[break][break]

Though the rampardos storms forward, Freddy doesn’t move. He keeps his ground and carefully watches. Off the dinosaur and his trainer go. Then a collision, one that Freddy actually snickers at. Though Memphis gives his ear a tug to tell him that wasn’t polite; but he doesn’t care.[break][break]

”Be nice.” Memphis scolds, but then smiles up at Sven and pretends the comical collision didn’t happen.[break][break]

The question of if he’s a scientist or not makes him laugh. ”I’m no researcher, no. I’m just an archivist at the national museum of natural history over in slateport.”[break][break]

Memphis gives Freddy a nod of approval and off he goes, aware that the dino got a head start but willing to bet he’d come out on top himself.

the invasion of personal space doesn't bother him. he doesn't mind she's looking over his shoulder. personal space has never been something he was afraid of sharing. as he always assumes the best of people.[break][break]

"i basically just do a lot of reading, organizing, and categorizing. sometimes i get to put up displays and things. which is why i recognized the art of the mural."[break][break]

he smiled her way before pocketing his phone, only now realizing just how close she was; he still didn't mind, they were just talking and in a deep dark crypt together. no big deal.[break][break]

"i don't know about a lot of stuff. i feel like mr. gideon knows a lot of stuff about this, but i'm getting there."

Koga huh? That was an interesting name choice. There were several names representing strong and fast, but the extra pun to the poison type gym leader was pure gold. Memphis could appreciate it.[break][break]

”I love the name.” He began, giving a greeting of a smile to the scolipede and not much bothered by it. GIDEON GRAVES had plenty of bug-type pokémon around. Memphis never minded them.

”No no, I’m just gonna have a water.” He took just that from the offered cooler before smiling in gratitude. ”But thanks.”[break][break]

He’d recently gone to the desert with Frank Caffey and his body still begged for water to be put in his system like he was a dried banana.[break][break]

Taking a seat as instructed, he thought about releasing all of his pokémon. They were relatively well behaved, but for the moment, he only had Minx out. She went from his shoulder to his lap and curled up happily, a little nibble along his hands and fingers.[break][break]

”It’ll be done in a minute, ma’am.”[break][break]

A puff left her before she complained in little chirps at him, pacing on his lap and waving her little arms. A full rant about how Sven’s pokémon all got to eat already and how dare she have to wait![break][break]

Amused beyond reason, he was all smiles by the time Sven was finished with the food. He got up to retrieve it, took a seat again, then shared his little sides with Minx. He took a bite and his eyes lit up. He blinked curiously before looking at him with a firm nod, mouth full of food, and then a thumbs up.[break][break]

”Mmhm!!”
