[attr="class","memphis-banner-cred-right-1"]never really had a home? memphis never would have understood that feeling in the past. but now? now he knows it all too well.

the hand that wraps around his and pulls him not only into the music, but out of his own thoughts. he is equally as distracted as he is ... warm? it makes memphis smile the sort of smile he doesn’t understand. a smile that warms his cheeks.

that warmth spreads like wildfire from his cheeks to his abdomen. whatever butterflies were in there felt like they were melting and turning into a massive tidal wave of new in his stomach.

the music is loud but he has to respond, so he leans forward to speak into his ear.

”my name is memphis,” he looks to nicolas’ eyes, they’re just as warm as his cheeks. ”what’s yours?”

[attr="class","memphis-banner-cred-right-1"]as they begin to walk memphis follows in step behind her effortlessly. there’s a calm that moves over him, knowing he’s not trekking through the hallowed grounds alone.

”me? heavens no. i’m just an archivist.” he only realizes after he’s said it that there would only be more questions following his answer.

so he interrupts himself before she can speak, hoping to clear the air of some before they can be asked.

”i came here to investigate a grave, which i’m planning on doing once these headstones are all washed. that was my um, like, entrance fee to the ruins, i guess.”

mink watches oleg with a curious blink and then begins to copy the alien, tail twirling around in a circle with her as she dances.

growing up, he was always taught that if he were to want it was because he was found unsatisfied with what arceus gifted him. challenging what arceus gave him was wrong. yet, one could pray to arceus for more and be see as right, so long as they were praying in the light of one of the priests of arceus, like his father, and like who his father wanted him to become.

was it all just a play? a ploy for more money? surely a god among the world wouldn’t be so narrow minded that it only listened to its priests. and the legendaries, their roll was what? to simply linger around and protect while arceus remained on high?

for memphis there were always too many questions and not enough answers. arceus was omnipresent and omniscient; in spirit. but what if that wasn’t the case?

what if arceus wasn’t a god? what if arceus simply held great power, like a legendary among legendaries?

hearing kaname’s apologies jerks memphis’ head up and he looks toward the other in mild shock. like he can’t believe he spaced out so much.

”no no!” he doesn’t shout, he’s simply persistent. though he realizes how desperate he sounds and quickly backpedals.

”ahem, i just mean, i enjoy talks of philosophy. it helps one broaden their mind, flex their beliefs. it’s important for growth, in my opinion.”

a warm smile is given; he doesn’t even realize how welcoming it is. he extends this welcome by raising his hand to shake the other’s.

”my name is memphis evren. i’m an archivist here. i started working here to gain new philosophies and perspectives on myths surrounding legendary pokémon.”

memphis isn't sure what nicolas means, but the laugh given after is contagious enough that he joins in. he laughs as well, though more of a chuckle and warm smile than a true laugh. after all, he's not sure if he's supposed to be insulted or not...

the nicknames make memphis' head spin. but like, in a good way. the sort of head spin that will make memphis think about the encounter for days afterward with no real reason other than wondering what the names mean or how they came to this man's mind. for instance, what's a flaco?

"i'm from sinnoh. hearthome city." the why makes memphis squirmy enough to try and detour the topic by answering it before it's asked, giving a half truth. "i've always wanted to explore. felt like it was about time to get out and look around."

except he left out the part about being kicked out of his own home because he thought differently than his parents and he certainly wasn't about to voice that the only reason he was in hoenn was because it was the first ship he could board.

"what about you? how long have you been here, and where were you beforehand?"

[attr="class","memphis-banner-cred-right-1"]is memphis aware the other is think of him as a potential suitor? no idea. he’s too busy smiling and keeping up conversation, all too enthralled in the fact that he’s making a new acquaintance!

because memphis was raised to treat everybody like a fellow ‘brother or sister of Arceus,’ bleh. makes finding a suitor impossible. and not that he knows it yet, but he’s more of a demisexual than a bisexual because of it.

”oh, definitely the different myths.” memphis is interrupted by his drampa’s small grunt, wiggling and writhing a bit. ”falkor? what’s up buddy?”

the question is asked as mink jumps from memphis to falkor, moving into the drampa’s fur. the drampa’s front legs, or arms as memphis calls them, wiggle and writhe as mink disappears into his fur.

”must be a bug or—“ his words are cut off as a shroodle makes it’s way onto the ground, tackled by mink who let loose a tail slap against it.

with swirls in its eyes, the shroodle groans. feeling pity, memphis tosses a ball to capture the poor thing. all the while, mink is giving the shroodle a lecture with her paw waving in a scold.

”see, i work in the archives at the museum. so i see a lot of the behind the scenes proof of different objects found in ruins that could potentially prove myths as fact or legend.”

mink makes a chiming noise that alerts to others she’s happy before bounding back up onto memphis. he stands about that time, gathering cleaning supplies in his hands.

”on my list, we’ve mr. darling.” memphis smiles at the name and then looks to sasky. ”but we can begin at the top of your list and work our way down if you’d like. maybe some of them will line up and we can work on them close by one another at the same time.”

[attr="class","memphis-banner-cred-right-1"]hearing a response to the question he asked mostly himself has memphis almost squeaking in response. he doesn’t squeak, but he does jump. jumps enough to look at the other beside him and blink. at first, he thinks,

he’s so elegant.

to memphis, it’s not a feat to be ‘put together’ but it is a talent. one he was not inherently born with and strives hard to achieve. yet this man he’s just met feels as if he does so effortlessly.

”everybody is found wanting to a degree, aren’t they? always striving for more. nobody much settles these days.”

the startle fades and memphis allows himself to smile. meeting new people is partly why he started this journey to begin with.

[attr="class","memphis-banner-cred-right-1"]the work of an archivist isn’t one that usually gives tours in the front. no, he’s behind the scenes most days. he logs things, categorizes, makes sure all behind the scenes runs smoothly.

organizing things and reading up on old myths is his favorite part of his job. he really does love his job. what’s not to love?

for the time being, he’s standing before a beautiful painting of the forces of nature. this specific painting holds enamorus as the centerpiece. life around it flourishing as the fall of winter brings the rise of spring.

his mind is frantic with facts about the legendary and theories. about how it’s said to have given rise to fresh life within the hisui region. how it’s vengeful to those who threaten that life.

which makes him wonder, and as he thinks he’s alone he decides to voice his thought in a mumble,

”i wonder which side they would punish if they came to hoenn right now.”

[attr="class","memphis-banner-cred-right-1"]we he's about the coolest guy memphis feels like he's ever met before in his whole entire life. maybe he's not, maybe memphis is just starstruck because he's excited to start a new life and move forward.

but the way he looks to memphis and right into his eyes, never wavering. his voice so confident— there's no way memphis stands a chance. he's hooked. his new job is the best job ever and nobody can ever or will ever be able to tell him otherwise.

"it's a pleasure to meet you as well, mr. graves." memphis introduced himself immediately, although he wishes in hindsight he would have spoken up a bit and sounded more confident.

"i'm super into myths." should i have said super? that's not very professional. the internal critique is noted as he hesitates, but a second later presses on conversationally.

"my mother and father raised me within the foreign building in hearthome city," the most religious building in all of sinnoh, really. dedicated to the faith of arceus. ”but i’ve always gone on vacations to celestic town and explored the ruins there. i love everything about them. from the mystery, to the theories, scientific fact.”

he gives a soft smile before admitting something he has never said out loud to a single soul.

”what i enjoy most about myth is how you have to have faith to believe in them long enough to prove them with fact. it’s rare when something of faith and fact can live harmoniously. rare and, to me, beautiful.”

[attr="class","memphis-banner-cred-right-1"]now, in frank’s defense, memphis had definitely said ‘the museum’ instead of ‘slateport’s national museum of natural history.’ that being said, memphis looks mildly confused at first when asked about the ‘rustboro museum’ until he realizes the mistake he’s made and unfashionably backtracks with a stammer or two.

”o-oh, no no. i meant, sorry. i work for the national museum of natural history in slateport city.” wow he feels embarrassed, are his cheeks hot, is he blushing?

”yikes, my brain sometimes. just doesn’t give all the information somebody needs to follow along.” his way of apologizing again without using the words, ”sorry about that.”

three apologies deep in the hole he dug himself, memphis doesn’t even realize there’s a wobbuffet and bronzor. not until frank throws another ball to capture something. seems catching pokémon is easier than memphis thought.

not that he’s tried, perhaps he should.

”as far as the stones go,” memphis begins to explain while drampa startles a nearby wobbuffet back into the wilds. ”they’re evolutionary stones and some geodes that could potentially hold a few tera crystals.”

this woman has a point. a point that has memphis' shoulders relaxing. he was taught his whole life that ghosts were a result of the faithless in arceus being cursed and sent back to the earth to roam in a sort of purgatory, tormenting the living out of anger and spite.

but what if instead they're just, ghosts? no different than aliens from another world?

"please do. i think if you help me, i won't be nearly as worried about ghosts lurching out to eat me as i am right now." memphis gives a soft laugh, mostly at himself, before holding out his hand to her.
