Frank strolled down the slushy, muddy path of Route 116, his Alolan Meowth at his side. The weather was starting to warm up this late in March, which meant melting snow and the first green shoots struggling to rise from the cold earth.[break][break]

If Frank was a more poetic man, he'd liken the new beginnings to the new start he'd been granted in life. After the debacle three years ago and the difficulties that followed, his arrival in Hoenn had felt like wiping the slate clean. Starting over, starting fresh.[break][break]

But he was not a poetic man. Spring followed winter; as an Unovan native, he knew that cycle well. And soon it would be time for picnics, charity events, games of golf — plenty of opportunities to build his connections in his new home and grow his company.[break][break]

For now, however, he'd be content with growing his collection of Pokémon.

A small smile graced Memphis' lips as he watched Mink and Gramps walk ahead of him. Mink plays happily in the fluff of Gramps' head, braiding and twisting the fur. Gramps doesn't mind, just let's the minccino have her way.

Beside him waddles his chansey, Ann. She happily plops a foot down one by one, seeming not much bothered by the fact that they're walking through a route. Not much bothered by the fact that wild pokémon could come lurching out at any given minute and interrupt their day. No no. For with her she carries a prized possession.

Memphis gave her the parcel they were escorting to look after and she plans on getting it to the location in Rustboro safely and without any blemishes! Her trainer proudly allows her to take care of these sort of things, as she takes a great care for them in light of having lost her egg.

One particular tug too hard has Gramps letting out a thunderous roar. Mink freezes, immediately, and ends up plinking to the ground like a statue, startled by the noise. Memphis and Ann freeze in their steps as well and Memphis looks curiously to Gramps.

"...y'good?"

He snorts at Memphis before shaking his hair and Memphis takes pity on Mink, picking her up in his arms and holding her while trying to untangle his drampa's foor.

"Think you might owe him an apology."

A furious roar from somewhere close by caused Frank and his Meowth to freeze in their tracks. "What was that, Rex?" the man asked, brow knitting together in consternation.[break][break]

A confused meow was his companion's only reply. Curious, Frank walked in the direction of the noise. With a sigh, Rex followed, picking his way through the mud.[break][break]

Eventually, they spotted a young man with blonde hair and his three Pokémon.[break][break]

"Hey!" Frank called out, waving a hand. "Did you hear that just now?"

"Eh?" The squeak of a reply comes from Memphis in a soft smile, nodding. "Oh! I'm so sorry, yeah. That was Gramps here. He uh..."

Mink looks to Memphis in desperation; don't let these new people know I upset him! That's what he feels he can see in her sparkling and pleading eyes.

"He stubbed his ... claw." Memphis hesitates and Gramps sorts, but Ann finally catches up to Memphis and gives a friendly wave to the newcombers.

It made sense that a Dragon-type Pokémon had made such a noise. If it had been a wild one, Frank would have been tempted to catch it. Instead, he merely smiled at the young man and his Pokémon, amused by the sight of the odd group.[break][break]

"All right. Just checking that it wasn't anything super dangerous," he said. "Though even if it was, it looks like you three could handle it."[break][break]

Frank hadn't seen another soul on Route 116 since his and Rex's arrival, and his extroversion was dying for some company. A stranger would do just fine.[break][break]

"Are you out for a walk too?" he asked as he trudged over, hands in his pockets.

"What, us? Oh no." Well that sounded rude, he thinks. "W-what I mean is, we are in fact walking, but it's not leisure. We're on a sort of ... business trip."

No, he has no clue how it sounds. He has no idea that he might sound like a shady pokémon smuggler. Or that he could potentially be a terrorist with a bomb. Nope, he's Memphis and he's nervous so he spouts anything that comes to mind.

"What about you and your meow—" one could nearly see the little ! appear above his head. "Oh! That's an Alolan meowth, isn't it? I've never see one in person before... so pretty."

Mink gave Memphis a trill of jealousy.

Only then did Frank notice the package carefully cradled in the Chansey's arms. His expression took on a note of intrigue. "Oh, you make deliveries then? How entrepreneurial," he said, amused.[break][break]

At the boy's exclamation over Rex, Frank chuckled. He bent down to pat the Alolan Meowth on the head. "He is indeed. His name's Rex, and I'm Frank. We're actually just taking a walk — for leisure."[break][break]

The man held out his hand for a shake.[break][break]

"What's your name?"

"I'm Memphis." He takes the hand stretched out to him, shaking it only as firmly as his own his shaken. "This is Mink, Falkor, and Ann."

Because he's the most original when it comes to naming his pokémon. They're honestly lucky they're not just grimlins one, two, and three.

The route around them isn't a route he knows well. He's new to Hoenn, after all, and he doesn't have the map totally memorized just yet. Instead, he is constantly pulling his phone out to look at his geolocation. Much like he does once his hand is let free from Frank's grip.

"We're on our way to Rustboro to deliver something to the Stone building. Is your walk heading that direction? We wouldn't mind the company."

Frank's eyebrows rose into his forehead. "It is, as a matter of fact. I live in Rustboro, so I know the way."[break][break]

How curious, too, that Memphis and his Pokémon were headed to the Stone building. Frank passed it plenty of times while carrying out his day-to-day affairs, though he hadn't yet had the privilege of having to visit. Perhaps he could finally step inside if he accompanied Memphis all the way to the lobby.[break][break]

They started off in the direction of the city.[break][break]

"So do you run your own delivery service, or are you just employed by one?" Frank asked. Delibird Deliveries was the main company that handled delivering mail and parcels through the region, but he knew very well how easily a small business could grow to prominence.[break][break]

Nearby, a Zigzagoon emerged from the tall grass. Frank's Meowth intercepted her with a quick NIGHT SLASH, allowing his trainer to throw a Pokéball.

"What luck we had finding you, huh?" Memphis gives a friendly laugh as he makes the comment posed as a question. As they walk, he watched the meowth with mild interest as it takes down a zigzagoon that Frank then catches.

Mink looks pretty mortified, what if she's next?! Gramps just saunters past them all and Ann? Ann's three or four steps back making sure the delivery's safe. A swoobat comes close but at the site of the night slashin' Alolan meowth turns wing and flaps out.

At the mention of him being a business man, or apart of a delivery business, Memphis let out a self-depreciating laugh; awkward on all levels.

"Oh no, nope. I work for the museum. We were told about a fossil in the cave not far from here." Does he know what it's called? Nope. "So I came to check it out. Ended up being more than just fossils. I'm taking the different stones we found within the walls to Rustboro."

Not only was Frank an extrovert, but he fancied himself a people person; he thought he could tell quite easily how another was feeling. To him, Memphis seemed socially anxious, or perhaps just awkward. And there was no better way to ease such awkwardness than to have the other person talk about their interests and passions.[break][break]

That was why Frank asked, "The museum? I didn't know there was a museum in Rustboro. What's it called?"[break][break]

He glanced over his shoulder at the Chansey that followed them, offering her a reassuring smile. The package she carried replaced the egg that was usually in her species' pouch.[break][break]

"What kind of stones are they — do you know?" Frank continued his line of questioning, genuinely curious — not about archaeology or any of that old stuff, but about Memphis himself.[break][break]

A Bronzor floated by, drawing Rex's attention. The Meowth knocked it out of the air with another NIGHT SLASH so that Frank could capture it.

[attr="class","memphis-banner-cred-right-1"]now, in frank’s defense, memphis had definitely said ‘the museum’ instead of ‘slateport’s national museum of natural history.’ that being said, memphis looks mildly confused at first when asked about the ‘rustboro museum’ until he realizes the mistake he’s made and unfashionably backtracks with a stammer or two.

”o-oh, no no. i meant, sorry. i work for the national museum of natural history in slateport city.” wow he feels embarrassed, are his cheeks hot, is he blushing?

”yikes, my brain sometimes. just doesn’t give all the information somebody needs to follow along.” his way of apologizing again without using the words, ”sorry about that.”

three apologies deep in the hole he dug himself, memphis doesn’t even realize there’s a wobbuffet and bronzor. not until frank throws another ball to capture something. seems catching pokémon is easier than memphis thought.
