the argument between trainer and owner is pretty well ignored in light of the discovery. he's a nerd.[break][break]

"y'know... i think they might be, yeah."[break][break]

he leans closer and pulls out his pokédex. he doesn't personally have one, nor has he been close to one to know the difference. to try and decipher if it is or not, he pulls up his phone and starts to search for murals that contain hisuian arcanines.[break][break]

"yeah, looks like it. i don't think these are the same murals though, but that's definitely it. could be the same artist hired back then."[break][break]

that was strangely common. murals of a certain age looking the same because of a popular artist going around and inspiring everybody to have that art style as it was highly sought after.

Maybe he shouldn’t have gone.[break][break]

That’s what he had been thinking as he approached where Sven had the grill and everything set up. That he should have just stayed home and not worried about anything remotely close to socializing.[break][break]

But he was trying his hardest to socialize. To make friends. To try and solidify a life for himself in a region that he so badly wanted to call home.[break][break]

So here her was, forcing himself into a social situation that usually made his skin crawl if he was doing it for him. Really anything he was doing for himself made him uncomfortable.[break][break]

Ah, conditioning.[break][break]

But there Sven was smiling his way and giving him a wave. The smell of hotdogs and burgers had Memphis cheering up and suddenly he wasn’t alone. The nerves were beginning to fade away and with a thankful smile, he walked over.[break][break]

”Hey. Uh… no special requests that I can think of.”[break][break]

He liked everything that was on the grill, after all. Minx sat on his shoulder, carefully looking at everything and all the other pokémon that were around.[break][break]

While Frank took his time putting in the number and email, not that he knew a number was being put in mind you, Memphis simply kept his face at the AC and willed away any kind of flush or blush that had made it to his cheeks. How? Easy.[break][break]

He simply recited the scriptures of Arceus that was conjured by the church following to keep ‘men pure’ for the ‘possible choice of vessel by Arceus.’[break][break]

A bunch of bullshit, Memphis had figured out, but it helped to immediately turn anything that was on, wholly off.[break][break]

Bless me Arceus for I have sinned and so forth.[break][break]

Leaning away from the AC, cooled to the point of not being embarrassed or having a moment of sin as his father would call it, he took his phone back from Frank and smiled without a second thought.[break][break]

”Tha—“ and then that wink stopped his heart, body, mind, and soul from moving forward at all.[break][break]

What was that? Was that a wink? That was super a wink. Why did he wink at me? Oh no what did I have on my browser???[break][break]

”—anks.” The thought was finished, though there was a small hiccup in it. Like the Matrix had acid reflux for just a moment. ”Uh, sure.”[break][break]

The people pleasure in him told him to say yes by default and so here he is realizing he’s agreed to meet up with Frank at some point in a less dangerous place + wink; what did it mean?![break][break]

So much for getting rid of that blush.

The desert heat had certainly been the reason for the blush. Yep. That's what Memphis was deciding as he pulled his shirt collar out and fanned himself after getting into the back of the vehicle.[break][break]

Being the rather scrappy little dunce he was, the moment the car lurched forward Memphis let out a squeak and gripped any part of the vehicle he could. He happened to land on Frank's hand and flinched away immediately, giving an apologetic smile and a nervous chuckle.[break][break]

"S-sorry. Still shaken up about the distortion, I think."[break][break]

And still dying of heat. To avoid any further idiocy, so he deemed it, he pulled his phone out and unlocked it, handing it to Frank.[break][break]

Being that he was literally a saint in training not too long ago, the most Frank'll find if he goes looking is some fanfiction that people deem spicy. Some browser history supporting that fanfiction somewhere in the danbooru land, and a shit ton of anything having to do with ruins. Yep, that's about it.[break][break]

"Thanks again for the photos. I wanna show them to my boss."[break][break]

Maybe could make sense of them, or see if the murals were something they'd established before or not.

As the bolder is smashed to pebbles before them, Memphis jumps. He's surprised by it, but not completely driven away. Curiosity takes its course and he's moving closer instead of away; mostly because he swore he heard a voice...[break][break]

Oh! And there was a person that belonged to the voice. Good, he's not just hearing random spirits or anything; that trip to the border really opened up his mind, you see.[break][break]

"Yo." Why did I repeat his greeting back to him?[break][break]

Maybe he was startled. Maybe just confused. He let it slide, for now.[break][break]

"Don't think too much of it. Freddy would have given you a decent fight. And honestly, still could. I have a blissey that can get them all in tip top shape afterwards so long as they don't get to the point of fainting... Arceus knows Freddy loves a good fight."[break][break]

As if on cue, the zangoose puffed out a bit of air and lifted a claw, as if to show a prized sword and challenge the farfetch'd to a battle.[break][break]

"But only if you want. Otherwise, we can wander around and let them take out wild pokémon...which sounds kinda abusive when I say it so nonchalant."

at first, memphis doesn't notice their not right on his tail. he doesn't notice saskia's fear. he doesn't notice anything; not until oleg makes a noise that could rival the sound of his father's nails against a chalkboard.[break][break]

wide brown eyes watch as oleg's manic and rushing forward. saskia follows not far behind and it makes memphis tense a bit, brows furrowing curiously.[break][break]

"hey wait!" right along with saskia and oleg, memphis rushes right into the crypt as well. several things pass him by, but he doesn't notice them. they're likely murals of some form or decoration.[break][break]

one in particular stops him, causing him to slide to a stop. it's a mural of people and their pokémon. he assumes it is whoever was buried here and their pokémon.[break][break]

The return of his porygon came first, because the thing would just keep zapping without mercy if he didn't. Then he looked to the driver and even gave a wave. It was a wave filled with awkward and confused curiosity.[break][break]

Once Frank addressed him, his attention is back front and center with the man who still has a hand around his wrist. Memphis didn't think about the way it looked until there were another set of eyes to think about; until there were, in his opinion, appearances to uphold.[break][break]

So he swallowed thick and reminded himself he wasn't in Sinnoh and that his dad wouldn't think anything or scold him because he wasn't even in the bloody region let alone the Arceus forsaken desert.[break][break]

"Um... yeah, sure." All confidence from before has been lost and is replaced instead with a bit of shyness, which shows in a faint tint to his cheeks. If asked, he'd blame the weather.[break][break]

"I could use the lift."

The battle makes Memphis a little squirmy. He's just not used to it. Every time he was challenged he usually told people 'no thank you' and walked away. To see his porygon help the rotom take care of the samurott did have a sense of pride welling in Memphis' chest...or was that anxiety?[break][break]

Probably anxiety.[break][break]

No fuss was given when his wrist was taken. He's pulled along and follows Frank out of the distortion. As his porygon makes its way through with the rotom, Memphis finally allows his shoulders to relax. They're safe.[break][break]

"That was close... pokémon just, pop outta the ground like sunflora in those things, huh?"[break][break]

All he could think was the chaos that would take place if a distortion like that opened up in a town.

Memphis was not nearly as wrapped up in the contact name thing as Frank was. Instead, he had heard the distortion make a warble and lifted his gaze. When he saw the form of a pokémon, he instinctively lifted his hand to grab at a capsule. The one specifically containing his porygon.[break][break]

Once released, the porygon took one look at the creature and collected the discharged energy from the rotom to fire it’s own zap canon. As it did, Memphis thought they made it out pretty lucky and furrowed his brows in mild concern.[break][break]

”M-Maybe we should get safe first, then do the numbers thing.”

"Nice one Freddy!"[break][break]

The zangoose comes to a stop, looks at his claws, then looks to Memphis as if to say that it was in fact not 'a nice one' and he had to work even 'harder.' He took to using his sword like claws to slash at the air, twisting and turning his body. It was his way of training. Since Memphis wasn't into battling all that much.[break][break]

"...not nice enough, I guess." Memphis mumbled to himself, a tinge of guilt clear. He glanced around at the caves around them, then furrowed his brows. He could brave a little adventure... maybe.[break][break]

"How about we go further in," he could see Freddy's ear perk up and back at him. "Maybe we can find you a few wild pokémon to practice with, right?"[break][break]

As if the worlds had aligned, Freddy all too quickly moved over in a sip of speed beside his trainer and proudly walked toward the inside of the caves, claws shining with delight.[break][break]

"Oh boy..." ...I named him aptly, I guess. Memphis thinks, knowing he named the claw handed feline after Freddy Kruger.

Many shades of emotion crossed Memphis’ face. From being excited to see Frank, to a small lament at the idea of him having a friend with an illness that kept them locked away and unable to explore, to thinking it super ironic that one of the workers at the museum was the exact same way, to then putting a hand over his head and looking up at the dome.[break][break]

And there’s fifty shades of Memphis’ thoughts, just for you.[break][break]

”Nope.” His answer is quick, almost rehearsed, but he really hasn’t ever seen anything like it before. ”But it’s cool, huh?”[break][break]

There he goes beaming like an Arceus-damned nerd.[break][break]

”I’ve worked around a lot of ruin stuff, but this is new to me. Actually, could you send those pictures to me as well? If it’s not too much trouble. I’d like to try and decipher them at some point.”

Taking his phone out, he begins scrolling through his contacts to find the ‘me’ contact every phone has.[break][break]

”Sorry, it’s a new number, I haven’t got it memorized yet.”

Hearing his name causes Memphis to look up curiously. When he lays eyes on a familiar head of silver, he gives a warm smile. All anxious nerves are tucked away so that the public world cannot see them.[break][break]

He is poised, he is prepared.[break][break]

”Frank!” The archivist doesn’t even realize his excitement is abundant in the way he says Frank’s name. ”It’s so good to see you again! I wasn’t sure I ever would.”[break][break]

But then again, who would? They’d met in a wild route and hadn’t really talked since. Didn’t even exchange numbers.[break][break]

Making his way over, he is near Frank and can see the walls that the rotom is snapping picks of. It has his eyes nearly turning into literal stars.[break][break]

”Oh wow! Look at that… do you know where they’re from, or what they pertain to?”
