fifteen years. [break][break]

the black beast has passed, but the work is never done ( if it ends, she'll find herself stewing in the darkness of time, and caught in its relentless blizzard and flurry. we can't have that ). her sanity hangs by the thread and bloated hope that one day they may return, but there comes a day where she has to set down the flame and accept what's come. [break][break]

so she busies herself. [break][break]

at first, it was one child she's taken in. over the course of a few months, more children have come seeking her asylum - and sheba can't find it in herself to say no. so with a heavy heart ( tired, mellow, festering for a purpose ), she begins the construction of an orphanage - or rather, the repurposing of an old building to become the orphanage. at first, it was supposed to be closer to the outside of town. her anxiety for the children keeps them close instead. [break][break]

it's only recently started, and she needs to budget for more supplies, and to care for the hunt, and more. of course she couldn't have started this alone - she had unlikely help. still, even with most of the specifics set up, there's still one pressing matter:[break][break]

she's worried for the winter. [break][break]

sheba's made it a habit to sit on the steps of the new orphanage to do her paperwork - the day becomes more bearable when she can hear the joyous play of children. though her eyes never lift from their focus, the quill leaves the parchment when she hears the creak of an iron gate. [break][break]

"ah."[break][break]

she pauses, amber eyes lifting from the pages. [break][break]

"you're back."

So much to do, needless to say. Though the arrival of The Black Knight had already been lost within days’ past, its very appearance was nothing more than an indicator of destinies yet to be fulfilled— and destinies close to fulfillment, altogether. In the grand scheme of things, it was hard to tell how long they would stay within the realm—or if they would ever be able to leave—but until the truth found itself revealed, the city had been their new reality.[break][break]

And they all owed an obligation to protect that reality.[break][break]

So he’d done as he’d always done, attending to his common duties within the guard before having chats and monitors amidst the hunting and gathering parties within the kingdom. With winter upon the near horizon, it was necessary to think ahead of the curve in order to ensure that those sharing the land would have ample opportunity to gather what they needed for the harsh seasons. By the time he was done for the day, a light rain had begun to fall among the moonlit grounds of the cityscape, leaving him chatting with a few of his trusted crew upon arrival among forming puddles upon the ground before he was finally able to push the doors open.[break][break]

Surprised was he to find words—seldom and few, though still present, regardless—greeting him, though save for a momentary gaze and a low hum, they hadn’t found themselves with proper response.[break][break]

He idled at the door for a few more moments before inhaling deeply and sighing, continuing to move through the doorway before sealing the building behind him. He passed through the entryway corridor, systematically dropping several of his belongings in a familiar, routine manner before striding behind the counterspace of the kitchens not too far off.[break][break]

He reached into the cupboards above, pulling a bottle out for himself and undoing its cork with a gentle pop.[break][break]

”...Surprised yer still awake,” he sighed, looking across the clearing once more. ”Ain’t it a ‘lil late fer ya to be up?”

it is. [break][break]

"i could ask you the same." glasses don't exist in this era yet - or if they did, they hadn't been invented yet. she hasn't gone senile, yet, but her eyesight just isn't what it used to be when she has to squint, slightly, at the parchment she so neatly writes with an ink-painted quill. [break][break]

even if she knows he was out hunting and the like, she knows, quite well, how dangerous it gets when it's dark (the sludge is always harder to see in the dark; always harder to kill). [break][break]

her scribbling only pauses when she pushes the parchment away from her, a hand raising to gently rub against the bridge of her nose. "i've been preparing for the winter." amber eyes narrow, and though the dye has since faded from her hair, the white hairs from overworking and stress weren't as kind. [break][break]

"how was today's hunt?" she asks, a deep sigh escaping her lips. hopefully, he had more luck than she was having trying to budget everything.

He leaned his head back, resting the rim of the bottle against his lips with a soft sigh.[break][break]

The liquor washed down with a familiar, albeit softer burn compared to others. A few moments’ worth of time and its contents, and he would’ve lowered the containment once more with knitted brows. Pensively, he eyed the bottle within his grasp before shifting his attention towards the floor past it, absentmindedly gritting his teeth together.[break][break]

”Still a lotta sludge. Ain’t any new news, but still,” he murmured, shifting his arm back in favor of resting the liquor bottle atop the counter behind him. With the same, ongoing idleness within the glare he bore, he crossed his arms, humming. ”Me ‘n the crew found enough fer now, but we ain’t comfortably outta the woods, yet.”[break][break]

based on the tired sigh, and the beeline to alcohol - or maybe she can chalk it down to old habits dying hard. amber eyes maintain their gaze on a man as he takes another swing of the bottle and, while she normally would reprimand him for the drinking, something else catches her attention (she'd usually flick the bottle away, but she learned quite quickly that it was better to let him do as he pleased, so long as he kept the bottle out of reach of the other children). [break][break]

"that's fine." she hums softly, glancing down at the parchment and scribbles once again. it means she'll have to sort out inventory again. "we still have time." [break][break]

she pushes herself away from the wooden tabletop, placing the quill down in the process. sheba moves towards a rack, and briefly feels the fibers between her fingers before they tug and pull it off its hanger. [break][break]

when she walks over, she tilts her head towards it, before directing her gaze back up at the man who still towers over her a decent amount. "dry yourself off" she says, with a voice still slightly flat, and still brief "before you catch a cold."

Stress, by then, hadn’t been anything akin to an enemy; rather, it grew ever closer to a companion as time went on. Such had been the case prior to their imprisonment, and such had remained the case as they found themselves there, fending day by day for the right to live.[break][break]

History had a gruesome way of repeating itself, truly.[break][break]

His gaze remained upon the floor for a while longer before he eventually drew breath once more—deeply—and began to reach towards the bottle once more. As his fingers barely grazed the glass, however, his attention found itself straying towards the woman as she began to move within the room.[break][break]

His eyes followed her, and then followed the rag she rose to him.[break]
He eyed it for a smaller while before taking it.[break][break]

”...Yeah,” he murmured, scrunching his face faintly before beginning to dry his hair off.[break][break]

He remained pensive for a while longer before peering down towards her again.[break][break]

”...The kiddos. How’d they fare today?” he asked before long; an attempt to move the conversation along. ”Any of ‘em get into trouble?”[break][break]

it's odd to her. [break][break]

odd to see him being so mellow, odd to see him being so pensive compared to his past, aggressive self. the man reflected in tired, amber eyes leave her baffled at how they once were - not that she had much time to think about it when they first got here. she's been too tired, clawing to survive, and scraping the bottom of the barrel like she had before. [break][break]

history writes a cruel, ironic poem. [break][break]

she half expects him to leave the conversation be, and leave once again in the dead of night. sheba was never good at small talk - and doesn't bother to hide her slight surprise in the slight raise of her brows when he continues on. [break][break]

it was cute hearing him call them "kiddos", though. [break][break]

she doesn't realize that the icy exterior melts, slightly, when her gaze lowers and her lips curl into a slight smile. "they were well, today." she hums, reflecting on the day fondly. "ah," she recalls, lifting her fingers to gently graze against her chin in thought. [break][break]

"thomas and conrad got into another fight." she chuckles despite it "they immediately stopped after nezetta brought one of us up." as they should, though that didn't make treating them afterwards any better. "oh then, there was--" she stops herself, and the spark momentarily dies when she realizes. [break][break]

"ah.. i'm rambling. apologies."

He eyed her for a little while longer, listening with what would’ve been considered an uncharacteristic sense of patience in the past. Though he hadn’t quite been aware of it, there had been a faint tug upon his lips—crookedly so, yet shed clear of the malice it commonly would’ve held long ago—as he listened.[break][break]

A hum filtered through his lips as he properly took the bottle he’d set aside once more, trading it for the cloth as he swirled it absentmindedly.[break][break]

”Good t’know at least one of ‘em’s keepin’ ‘em in line,” he chuckled, casting a faint glance towards the dimmed corridors leading towards the other rooms of the building. Amber hues remained upon the shaded corners as if anticipating one of the selfsame children to suddenly dart around, but before long, he merely shook his head and closed his eyes.[break][break]

He took another drink. Briefer.[break][break]

”Just keep goin’,” he sighed after, raising a brow to her as his eyes found their ways back to her. ”I’m the one that fuckin’ asked, anywho. What about Kienan ‘n the others? He get rustled and bullied by the ‘lil ones like usual~?

he laughs. [break][break]

a decade ago, she'd be taken aback, or maybe even a little disgusted? it's only with time and working alongside him does she learn that he actually has a side of him, that doesn't have a stuck shoved up it. her fingers lightly tap against her elbow when she crosses her arms and she sighs, only slightly, and softly. [break][break]

his chuckle and smile, crooked as it may be and unnatural it can seem, is a little contagious. maybe that's why she's smiling a little bit in return. [break][break]

"yes," she starts, walking towards the counter next to a man sipping on his alcohol. she reaches into a cabinet, searching for a corked bottle to tug out, followed by a brief gaze to a glass. when the cup is planted, she pours herself a glass to idly swish. may as well enjoy some while she has company. [break][break]

"poor kienan had to be comforted by little sigrid~" she chimes, chuckling at the still familiar image. sheba takes a sip from her drink, humming softly before turning, and leaning against the edge of the counter. [break][break]

"a few of them have been wanting to go hunting with you, soon~." she can name them, since they're always the same ones - although she's been seeing some new faces. "including some of the newer ones."

He gave another, scoffing cackle— that one louder than intended.[break]
He hadn’t regretted it in the slightest, though he did cast an instinctively look towards the corridor once realizing its volume.[break][break]

”Gah. Poor fuckin’ bastard,” he snickered, absentmindedly pressing his tongue against the wall of his cheek at the thought. ”Bein’ fuckin’ cooed by a ‘lil lass like that… It’s fittin’, but still.”[break][break]

He chuckled for a spell or two longer, idly watching as she fetched her own glass and drink before taking another swig of his own.[break][break]

”’Course, though— and obviously, that ain’t fuckin’ happening…” He breathed a sigh, shaking his head. ”Obvious reasons aside, ‘n all. Too fuckin’ dangerous. …Can’t afford that shit.”

he's not the only one who looked to the corridor. [break][break]

she's halfway to stopping herself from covering his mouth because he let out such a loud laugh, and the silent furrowing of her brows paired with her finger to her lips will say it all. still, there's silence from her as her ears perk to try and catch the footsteps of any possible children who might have gotten up-- and nothing happens after a few moments. good. [break][break]

it's only now when she can let out a sigh of relief. [break][break]

"you'll have to remind them again, then" her lips curl into more of a smile once she's relaxed, chest raising before a soft sigh escapes her lips. "the older ones are insisting that they learn to hunt," she'll think of this logically, but a twang in her heart rings for the children. [break][break]

so she takes another swing. [break][break]

".. and they always start young in this time." [break][break]

it's a painful reminder when she watches children work, but those getting too old for housework have been itching for battle.

Though fleeting and twisted in a way, the warmth that filled his chest found itself faltering at the note of the truths within her words. The tug of his lips remained prominent as he held the bottle within his fingers, but after a moment, an idling hum left them as they relaxed slightly.[break][break]

Inhaling deeply, he clicked his tongue a few times in thought before setting the glass down once more, crossing his arms upon his chest while shifting more of his weight atop the counter behind him. The smile finally left his lips before long, replaced by a more familiar—albeit fainter—scowl.[break][break]

”...Maybe I’ll take the older brats sometime, then.”[break][break]

He sighed, chuckling wryly.[break][break]

she really hates to bring down the mood. [break][break]

but it's necessary, sometimes, for certain topics. this one, is one of them; although the times are different. it's natural for children to begin hunting while young, and it's natural for them to want to start doing the things adults did - there's only so long they can go satisfied with play. [break][break]

but that changes nothing. [break][break]

even if it's for the sake of survival, it reflects her too much when she sees the scowl and hears the wry chuckle. though she doesn't quite do the same, she hums instead. [break][break]

"they do, they do.." [break][break]

yes, they do, she reminds herself. she's saying it in her head, to remind herself that this is the case ( -- to convince herself that this is the case ). dark locks fall over her eyes when her fingers gently tap against her glass, and a moment of silence follows her words. it makes the air tense, slightly, and reminds her that no matter how the years pass, she'll never get better at conversation. [break][break]

there's one thing that's changed, however. [break][break]

"... i hoped that they wouldn't." she finally voices, after a little bit of thought. another swig of the glass and she heaves out a soft sigh. it's not emptied, but she grabs the bottle again to fill it half full once again. "if it were up to me," she starts, taking the cork to screw it back into the bottle "i wouldn't want them to worry about surviving."[break][break]

not like she did. [break][break]

"children shouldn't have to, don't you think?"[break][break]

her back is turned, but what expression did she wear when she asked?

As heavy as a question as it was, there was little time nor hesitation in his response.[break][break]

…Maybe even a touch of biased sorrow.[break][break]

He hadn’t caught it quick enough to prevent it from bleeding through, though he’d realized it nevertheless— and in the midst of it, he found himself falling quiet once more. Another hum escaped him as his brows furrowed once more, a faint weight settling upon his shoulders despite the prior looseness he’d felt just moments beforehand.[break][break]

His fingers found purchase against the bottle by him yet again.[break][break]

”Makes fuckin’ two of us, then,” he muttered lowly, only taking a brief pause to knock his head back with another sip of liquor. ”Kids are kids. They ain’t gotta have responsibilities— and it ain’t fuckin’ matter when or where they’re from.”[break][break]

He eyed the floor for a few seconds.[break][break]

”...The ‘lil blokes’re still just kids, either way.”[break][break]

Another bout of silence, followed by the last swig of booze. With little remaining within the bottle he’d taken for himself, he remained idle for a while longer before sealing it properly again, raising an amber gaze amidst the dimmed lighting to eye the woman that strayed several paces away from him.[break][break]

An expression of unknown weight and detail would be left unmatched with one of crestfallen frustration, tried and true.[break][break]

”...Fuck if ya ain’t right, though…” he murmured in addition and following, his tone ever reluctant.
