Another bout of silence would be her response; a continuous moment that lacked closure for the inquiry asked of him. It lingered even as the form before him shifted in favor of facing him properly once more; lingered as hues of a dulled amber met those of similar tones; lingered as she, herself, merely stood there and waited for a response that only seemed as though it would never come.[break][break]

He inhaled deeply after some time, furrowing his brows all the more as he lowered his hands into his pockets.[break][break]

”Answers’re money, y’know,” he started off, a phantom’s call bleeding deep upon his tongue, ”and there ain’t no amount’a cash that could buy me out.”[break][break]

she chuckles - yes, she has the audacity to laugh. maybe it's out of spite, maybe it was because she had no other reaction. the tense air and the weight was becoming so suffocating that she can't help but to try and lighten it, even if the reaction isn't all too appropriate. why does she expect a different answer? why does she expect anything else? [break][break]

it was a good answer; and she'll agree. money was everything, yet worthless when it can't buy something. in this case, a man's story. at least he's honest. [break][break]

another swig of the glass, and the stinging burn of alcohol rolls down her throat as amber eyes blankly stare up at a dim, wooden ceiling that hangs above the both of them. messy bangs of aged brunette are pushed above her forehead as a smile (spiteful, venomous, but only towards a past that just feels so painfully familiar). she never did well with de ja vu, see. [break][break]

amber eyes lower, now to something more somber. the forced glee, and the spiteful laugh of irony has passed. her reflection is barely seen in against the glass.[break][break]

in the same way he doesn't plan to tell her, but there's something in the curious tone she's never heard, from anyone, that's pulled at a little string in her heart. it's the one that weighs heavy, and the one that the buzz of alcohol can't coat. [break][break]

her gaze is lowered to the planks below them, an arm dropping its weight to her side as her gaze traces towards the man's shoes. there's a weight on her shoulders, and she wonders: will it lift if she talks about it? [break][break]

"you sound so surprised." she chuckles, but it's no feathery laugh. "does it sound that unbelievable?"

Instinct bleed deep within anyone and everyone, after all, and it just so happened that his own pushed him in favor of taunts and challenge even after all that time.[break][break]

he isn't a complete knucklehead. [break][break]

sometimes she has to remind herself of it. even if he looks like he's all muscle and no brain, his keenness on the details will never cease to surprise her. sometimes, his hunches are a bit too accurate - and she lies if it hasn't thrown her off in the past. it has when they did business, and it did when he approached her, and it did when they decided to work together for yet another time. he's been nothing but surprises. [break][break]

"that's fair." loathe she is to admit, she still honors a fair exchange. still, it doesn't mean she'll spill her heart. [break][break]

so she smiles, a little more, and there's another laugh (genuine this time, with a hint of amusement within the spaces of exhaustion) when she moves, slightly, to give him the room to reach into a cabinet. the silence is maintained, because she doesn't wish to speak. the silence is maintained, wavering, while the weight crushes over her shoulders. [break][break]

she's already gotten over it. [break][break]

so why does her heart pound, and why does the anger well?[break][break]

then the silence is broken. [break][break]

"they left me with a no-good mother." [break][break]

venom seeps through her words, and no amount of restraint will keep her from spatting over mother. she doesn't mean to continue, but it's so damn hard to stop when the lock cracks. [break][break]

"kept me on a tight leash, and made me dance like a pretty doll."[break][break]

she tries to hide her expression, she does, but the grip against the corner of a countertop and the furrowing of her brows are a sign of nothing.

For a while, he listened with an uncharacteristic degree of thought, patience, and quietness, alike.[break][break]

Relatable, honestly speaking— moreso than he ever would have liked to admit. Though he hadn’t started off with the scum of earth for family, a recollection of memories from a family so brief—caring, yet still inadequate enough—rang true within his mind as she’d spoken that simple, beginning phrase. His hands withdrew from the cabinet before finding themselves within a fold once more, all while his weight found itself against the counter once more as he turned to face her again.[break][break]

”See, that’s somethin’ I can relate to if yer speakin’ truth,” he sighed, shaking his head ever so faintly all the while. Though an indiscernable watchfulness had overtaken his gaze as it loomed upon her, there had otherwise been a vaguest degree of thoughtfulness as he mulled her words over. ”At least as far as bein’ controlled ‘n pushed t’act a certain way.”[break][break]

she has to remind herself that he's lived through these years, just like her, and lived through these recent years with her, and the other parts of staff. honestly, she never thought that she'd be spilling any part of a past outside of galar, but here she is, in the silence of the night, with only the dim light of a lantern to cast its light on shadows. [break][break]

sheba laughs, painfully - one where the dry humor scratches at her throat. [break][break]

another swig of alcohol remedies it, for the moment. [break][break]

"good that it never wore you down." sheba's head lowers, and amber eyes worn from time glare at the alcohol in her cup for another moment. "but"[break][break]

she chuckles, hollow and tired, and despite the earlier venom the sorrow empties out the passion that cares. if she was in the system, and it failed him, maybe this is where their similarities stop. maybe this is where it ends. [break][break]

"she was my birth mother, and she hated me."[break][break]

"does it seem that way?" she tries not to look too offended when reminding herself that she hasn't said everything, and drowns the disdain in more alcohol to fuzz the agitation. [break][break]

and the sun rises from the west at his words, and she has to pause her sip to process what he says. he finally spoke about himself, didn't he? [break][break]

she's sympathetic when her chin lowers from a tilted, glass chalice to gaze at the man who so casually leans against the counter. she's sympathetic, hearing about a child who'll have no place to attach to, or a place of security, or a place to call home (the similarities will eat at her). [break][break]

an amber gaze rests on the man and locks of dark brunette are lightly tugged between distressed fingers. he seems to have misunderstood what kind of life she led; she'll enlighten him. [break][break]

she scoffs, and the memories don't leave a pleasant aftertaste on her tongue. "yes," there's a quick nod of her head, just to affirm and reiterate her words "i was wanted." [break][break]

"they wanted me so badly, they paid off anyone who tried to get me out."[break][break]

and she lowers her gaze, then lowers the cup against the surface as a low and deep breath is collected through pensive thought. [break][break]

"if i was thrown around, place to place, at least i'd be free." but she still grunts, glancing to the side. her shoulders slump only slightly, and a small, defeated smile creeps to her lips when she resigns.[break][break]

"... but i guess it wouldn't be much better, would it?"

Although the disdain that bled deep from both word and expression, alike, hadn’t been lost upon him, an unwavering front had settled itself upon his own visage as he watched and listened. With a clenched jaw—less from irritation, thought, or anything of the sort; merely a natural happenstance, that time around—he rested his head against one of his shoulders as he leaned back with a sort of leisure that almost seemed passive. Dismissive. Uncaring, even.[break][break]

And damn if his words rang supportive of such implications at first glance.[break][break]

Rebellion, after all, had always been the strongest of suits for him, and even if it hadn’t been as easy for others to embrace, that fact still remained true in regards to himself. To lay down and accept the terms of service laid before him without so much of a word of skepticism spoken had been far from his functions, whether past, present, or soon to be; an instinct that had engraved himself within the very fiber of his being from the moment the cards were picked unwillingly for him.[break][break]

this bastard, she thinks. but she can't say, because she knows that what he says it's true (she's tested it; she's lived through it, but the price to pay for survival wasn't worth it). then again, she didn't know exactly what she was looking for when she finally loosened the padlock from the shackles. instead she idly watches as his figure moves about in the dim darkness, ears perking at the click of the key against its lock in one of the cabinets. he describes a wonderful idea - something that she's already too familiar with doing. he's describing exactly what she's done, when she stares herself in the mirror of twenty years back. the glass has been so stained with blood that she can't tell her eyes apart from the crimson anymore. [break][break]

"well, it's why i hired you once upon a time, right?" it's so funny how things come around, and how they end up here, and how their pursuits for power start from horrible cards and end with a target on their backs and red on their hands. [break][break]

but even when she sits on a throne of bones and blood and life, she'll narrow her eyes and sigh. With a soft grunt, he stood at his full height once more, nudging the cabinet closed with the side of his leg before placing the key he’d used back within the confines of his pocket. After retreating from its cloth embrace once more, it instead towards another set of keys—smaller—that hung upon his belt from a simple, bronze loop.[break][break]

He unfastened it from where it remained secured to lift it up, inserting it into another lock— that time upon the box, itself.[break][break]

Following a gentle and quick flick of the lid, he hooked the set of keys upon his person once more before reaching in towards its contents. Between two fingers, he took hold of a simple, wooden pipe; its form much like any other, yet varnished finely amidst some engravings that were made clear upon its form. Between two others, he pulled a vial out before dropping it into his other hand and beginning to twist its cap off.[break][break]

Tobacco.[break][break]

He glanced over while beginning to tap it into the pipe.[break][break]

”...Just a smoke,” he murmured, clicking his tongue. ”Much as it’s weirdly nice talkin’ ‘bout it, yer makin’ me stressed with all this deep shite.”

that's something they both agree with. [break][break]

oddly enough, cain was a nice person to talk to. brash nature and judgement aside, she doesn't have to worry about him hiding or holding reservations. maybe that's why she found it pleasant? maybe that's why the children found it easier to speak. frankly, he reminds her of someone who feels the same, though he's much more.. agreeable. like a dog (she loves you Hitoshi Inoue ).[break][break]

but the thought it held when amber eyes catch the sight of a pipe in his hand. [break][break]

and her response is to raise her hand to his cheek, brows furrowed as her gaze shifted into slight judgement. it was tobacco (unrefined for the times, but she's too familiar with the scent and has to scrunch her nose slightly) of all things. her lips curl into a frown as her fingers lightly slap at his cheek. [break][break]

"i feel the same" she starts, though still lightly pats his cheek before pushing his head and gaze towards the door "but you aren't going to smoke in here, are you?"[break][break]

"while the kids are sleeping?"
