A simple thought, albeit silent— though the keenest of all would find little difficulty in piecing together the vague implications of what it all, even without words. Though she looked his way—and though he felt her gaze upon him—his own, burning hues of amber merely lingered upon the pool in front of him for a little while longer. Another sigh left his lips as he leaned forward slightly, propping his elbow upon a knee while his jaw sought to cradle itself against his palm.[break][break]

A reaction like that would normally take her by surprise. But Summer didn't flinch, because she knew exactly how he felt. She had to admit, she was grateful for the parts she remembered. Most of all, everything that happened between her and Gunner Graves.[break][break]

Their discussion had been a lot easier with previous tensions pushed out of the way.[break][break]

Summer snapped her fingers to her staff, ordering him a drink. Honestly, it seemed like he needed it. And if he didn't drink it, that was just an extra bit of booze for her later.[break][break]

"What do you mean, the road to here?" she asked, regarding him with cool curiosity.[break][break]

Summer waded closer, though she kept some distance between them, less he kick her in the face. "I agree, to an extent. Some of the remembering has helped me in the long run. But the memories I can't remember keep me up at night. Which is why I'm here. Does that answer your question?"[break][break]

He didn't need to know about her break up. He didn't need to know about her lost baby. He didn't need to know about any of her loss.

”I mean shit that ain’t yer business t’know,” he spoke back plainly and immediately all the same. A skeptical glare trailed along her form as she waded along, though in light of the conversation he’d found himself pulled into, his common means of action found themselves absent as he merely watched her. ”Ya got yer own story, I’m sure— just like I got mine.”[break][break]

The snap caught his ears, and he passed a look of idle curiosity towards the workers she’d spoken to for just a moment.[break][break]

”And I got a tight policy of keepin’ that story to myself— price tags and bribery be damned.”[break][break]

He looked towards her again with a prolonged idleness. Before long, however, he sighed, slowly and slightly leaning closer as he rested both arms against his knees. The weight of his chest rested against both them and his arms as he tilted his head quirked his lip, slightly, to a side.[break][break]

”But yeah, though— I guess it does,” he mused on, shrugging. ”It’s that same, same fuckin’ thing that eats me alive, though; that feelin’ of bein’ restless and in my mind thinkin’ about it at times I don’t wanna be.”[break][break]

It only added to the amount of things he’d lost from the start, filling in the gaps of what previously hadn’t been attained—nor what he’d thought to have been attainable—before life found its way to pry it from his bleeding hands once more. Companionship was an ideal that he’d never cared for past the fleeting beds within days passed, yet within that forsaken dream realm—within the realm that gave him a purpose he’d never known himself capable of—it proved itself just as intent and willing to leave him like everything else.[break][break]

”Like I said— a liability. A weakness. I’m better off without it.”[break][break]

And truthfully, some part of him despised that.

Summer shrugged. He was right. She had things she didn't want to share openly with the world. But, she couldn't help but wonder what her companion's struggles were. While she couldn't stand him, she didn't know much past his walled exterior.[break][break]

Hell, she didn't even know how he got the scar along his cheek.[break][break]

She could only fit Cain Toman into the category she knew him as: an asshole, bastard, dickhead. Just like he'd probably made some sort of ridiculous category for her.[break][break]

"I've found that a few things help with the restlessness. Sex, getting drunk, going out to a party. Releasing yourself and fucking relaxing for once."[break][break]

As if on cue, the staff member came over with a drink in hand, offering it to him. She raised her brows, waiting to see if he'd take it.

She would’ve found his response to be nothing short of a snort.[break][break]

One that came instinctively, truthfully speaking; not quite at the idea of it all, but rather the irony of it all. Far be it for him to disagree with her for once, but as she listed her means and methods, a small, skeptical, and even disapproving and rejecting hum left his person as he listened along— albeit vaguely.[break][break]

”Yeah, y’see, we’re of the same mind, fer once— sadly, sadly speakin’, honestly,” the Rocket sighed, shaking his head. Within the same breath, his form leaned back and away from the waters, his head maintaining a vague laziness as it began to roll back against his shoulders.[break][break]

Before he could lounge too much, though, he noted the server striding over.[break]
He eyed them as they approached, and after a simple moment’s worth of thought, had wasted little time in taking the drink they offered.[break][break]

”All those? Plus a few rounds of beatin’ the shit outta some poor shmucks in the ring?”[break][break]

He tilted his head back, immediately taking a gracious drink from the glass before waving it towards her slightly.[break][break]

”Done it. Yeah, it works, but it’s still just a fuckin’ bandaid fix, if anythin’— and if we’re in the same boat with this shit, I think ye know that pretty damn well by now.”

Summer grunted softly. She agreed. They were nothing more than temporary fixes. It was why she found herself trying to go out more and more, drink more, find more people to bring her over the edge. Maybe she'd forget and remember what it was like to be herself.[break][break]

For a short span of time, he gave another, elongated hum of idle attention; his gaze continuously lingering upon the poolside as his fellow Rocket went on to speak her part. Instinctively and ever so slightly, his lips pursed at the note of her words before he breathed a small, almost agitated groan, shaking his head and tilting his head back to polish the rest of the drink he’d been given only a short time prior.[break][break]

”’Course ye do,” he snickered lowly, clicking his tongue, ”’cause I got a track record’a bein’ right.”[break][break]

Another breath. Another sigh.[break]
He took another pause to run a hand through his hair, ruffling it with a touch of frustration on the note of the conversation.[break][break]

”Ye can’t tell me what t’do, though— property be damned.” His lips pressed thin, though nevertheless, a taunting tug prompted the edges of his lips once more as he set his glass aside, raising a brow towards her. ”What if I wanted t’bitch ‘bout it, eh? What could ye do about it~?”

Spoken with no shortage of leisure, all while he flashed her a more mocking sort of smirk. His eyes remained upon hers through the short time she’d met them, though as she began to swim away (still a bit shittily, by the look of it), he merely breathed a soft snicker before beginning to reach for the glass he’d set aside.[break][break]

Before he could so much as press a finger against its form, however, he’d caught a small sense of movement from the edge of his periphery— though before he could properly react and look towards the source, he lurched forward with a loud, ”FUCK—!” before immediately being yanked simultaneously.[break][break]

Back shoved, then leg yanked; falling then dragged somehow simultaneously.[break][break]

He broke the water with a violent splash, his feet briefly stumbling along the pool floor as he flailed for a moment. With a sharp snap back upward, though, he stood up, drenched, with a look of brewing disdain as he breathed deep.[break]]break]

Slowly, he ran a hand through his hair, pushing it from his face as he opened his eyes to glare at her with a wry grin.[break][break]

”Ooooh. I’m gonna fuckin’ kill ye~.”

Summer's plan worked. She gave Surtur a thumbs up, the EMBOAR going back to circling the parameter. She only had a brief pause as he was submerged, making a brief escape to the opposite side of the pool where she could still stand.[break][break]

And when he did come back from the water, she looked as innocent as she could. "Surely you're suffering just sitting out when there's a nice pool waiting for you, hmm?"[break][break]

She wasn't afraid of his threat. That grin was almost predatory, but she only met it with a smirk.[break][break]

"Try me."[break][break]

And she took off, swimming away from him. At least she had a head start.

She wasted no time in embarking upon her escape, but as she began to turn, the fighter narrowed his eyes further; a flicker of mischief igniting within a proper malice lit ablaze within the span of a single moment. Amber hues found themselves emblazoned within a pyre as he stepped back towards the wall behind him— one that resonated with the note of a reckoning to come as he watched his quarry.[break][break]

For just a second, he pressed his foot against the frame of the pool behind him before pushing off with a kick, sending him gliding through the water as he moved his arms through its bounds, strongly, in brief chase. With an eye lingering above the water to trail within her wake, he swam through with a gusto before breaking through the surface of the water once more, diving beneath and below for a spell.[break][break]

While using his height to his advantage, he glided along to the floor before settling his feet upon it, situating himself for just a moment before launching himself closer to her with a burst. With a hand outstretched, it found purchase against her arm as he broke the surface of the water once more, tugging her along with his momentum.[break][break]

”‘Try me,’ my fuckin’ ass...!” he barked, haphazardly moving his free hand along his hair to brush it back another time as he stood once more. With a fire within his gaze, he glared back down at her with a disbelieving and almost sardonic laughter, pulling her along and closer all the while. ”Yer tryna run from me? Me~?”

There was no time that Cain had made the difference in reaching her. It truly sucked that she was so short in comparison. He was just better at taking the longer strides in the pool, and when he grabbed her, she flailed for a moment.[break][break]

Because with his grip on her arm, it was sink or swim.[break][break]

”Cain!” Summer knew better than to cry out and beg for mercy. In fact, this entire this was initiated by her. But the thing was, she couldn’t touch the ground. The bottom of the pool was a far reach from her toes.[break][break]

Out of instinct, her arms reached out, grabbing onto his shoulders with a death grip. And her legs gripped his waist, wrapping around him for dear life.

In the grand scheme of things, Cain had always been a lot of things— deliberate asshole being one of them.[break][break]

Murderer, admittedly, would also prove to be an accurate label to the select crowd, but even then, it had always been under some form of contract.
